United Party for National Development (UPND) has thanked the people of Livingstone Constituency for voting for Reverend Howard Sikwela as their area Member of Parliament.

In a press statement to ZANIS in Livingstone yesterday , UPND Livingstone District Information and Publicity Secretary, Neto Halwabala said his party appreciates the support its candidate received from the people including the Movement for Multi Party Democracy (MMD), United Liberal Party (ULP) and other interest groups.

He said by voting for Reverend Sikwele, the people of Livingstone had proved that they are principled.

He alleged that despite maneuvers by the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) to buy votes from them using materials which they distributed, the people of Livingstone remained focused by voting for the UPND candidate.

Mr. Halwabala alleged that the ruling party distributed gifts in form of chickens, mealie meal, sugar and maize in an attempt to induce people of Livingstone Constituency to vote for their candidate Mr. Joseph Akafumba.

“The ruling party resorted to extreme violence in an attempt to scare people from turning up for voting but you people turned up in large numbers, 20,000 plus and voted for candidates of your choice,” said Mr. Halwabala.

He said now that the elections were over and Livingstone Constituency had a member of parliament, people must unite and work together in order to develop the tourist capital.

Mr. Halwabala stated that Patriotic Front (PF) members were free to meet the newly elected Member of Parliament and present their problems and to advise him on how best the constituency could be developed.

And commenting on the PF’s intention to petition the election results, Mr. Halwabala said UPND was eagerly waiting for the petition.

Republican President Michael Sata has appointed Chongwe Member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo as minister of Tourism and Arts while former deputy minister in the office of the Vice President Edgar Lungu is new Home Affairs Minister.

President Sata has since transferred Kennedy Sakeni to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting with Fackson Shamenda retaining the labor portfolio which has been de-linked from the ministry of information.

The Tourism portfolio has been de-linked from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The President has also sworn in Dr. Roland Msiska as deputy secretary to the cabinet in charge of civil service and three Permanent Secretaries, Dr. Velepi Mtonga for Public Service Management Division, Pamela Chibonga and Felix Nkulukusa for budget and economic affairs and economic management respectively at the Ministry of Finance.

President Sata has further conferred the dignity of State Council on four advocates of the High Court of Zambia.

The advocates include Dr. John Mulwila, Mwikisa Mukande, Emmanuel Mwansa and Mwila Chitabo.

Speaking during the swearing in ceremony at State House this morning, President Sata urged the new officer bearers to serve the country diligently stating that Zambia has too many administrative pot-holes which must be corrected.

President Sata said the PF government in line with its party manifesto is pursuing the creation of district Attorneys in order to decentralize prosecution and further urged Home Affairs Minister Edgar Lungu to use his experience in law to ensure justice is given to the Zambians.

The President also urged the Minister of the newly created Tourism and Arts Sylvia Masebo to explore the Country’s tourism potential.

THE Supreme Court has set July 17 this year as the appeal date of a case involving three judges who were granted a stay over their suspension and setting up of a tribunal to probe their alleged professional misconduct.

The Supreme Court would on the same day also hear another appeal case of JCN Holdings Limited, Post Newspapers Limited and Mutembo Nchito in which they were ordered to pay back K14 billion owed to the Development Bank of Zambia (DBZ).

This is according to a search conducted at the Supreme Court in Lusaka yesterday.

A panel of Supreme Court judges would also pass judgment on the same day in a petition appeal of MMD Malambo Member of Parliament Maxwell Mwale, whose seat was nullified by the High Court.

In the case of the three judges, the State appealed against Lusaka High Court Judge Fulgence Chisanga’s decision to sustain a stay of proceedings of a tribunal appointed by President Michael Sata to probe alleged misconduct of Supreme Court Judge Philip Musonda.

Others are High Court judges Charles Kajimanga and Nigel Mutuna, who had resumed their duties following a stay.

Ms Justice Chisanga’s ruling emanated from an application filed on May 17, 2012 by Solicitor General Musa Mwenye for her to set aside an ex-parte order granted to the three judges.

In dismissing the State’s application recently, the judge did not agree with Mr Mwenye that investigations to be conducted by the tribunal ought not to be stayed simply because the process was investigative in nature.

In the on-going diplomatic light-hearted row over George Bush, Information, Broadcasting and Labour Minister, Fackson Shamenda has likened UPND leader, Hakainde Hichilema to unprincipled wizard.

Reacting to Mr. Hichilema’s intentions to petition President Michael Sata’s alleged rebuking of Former American President, George W. Bush, Mr. Shamenda said that the opposition leader is full of hatred and jealousy for the position of republican presidency.

He said that Mr. Hichilema should admit that the Zambian people rejected him through the ballot.

Mr. Shamenda maintains the encounter between President Sata and the Former US President was purely light-hearted.

Mr. Sata is alleged to have rebuked Former American President, George W. Bush over the colonial legacy of Western countries whom he accused of “abandoning” Africa having stripped it of its natural resources.

Former first lady,Dr Maureen Kakubo Mwanawasa, has charged that the misinterpretation by some citizens, of the term, Zambia is a Christian nation, has caused what she coined “enslavement” than freedom.

Dr Mwanawasa said some citizens have mishandled the clause and were causing problems by taking the law into their own hands.

Dr Mwanawasa condemned individuals who undressed young girls in public because of how they dressed, in the name of preserving Christian and cultural values.

She was speaking yesterday on a conitutional review program presented by Zambia blog talk radio.

Dr Mwanawasa said, the undressing of women who dressed in mini skirts was unjustified considering that fashion was dynamic.

“People are offended by mini skirts, they have been there in the sixties and no hell ever broke loose”, Dr Mwanawasa added.

• Great acting by the whole cast . Andrew Garfield took the Peter Parker/Spider-man character to a higher level of believability.
• The special/visual effect were great , they really brought the movie to life.
• Rhys Ifans  played the role of The Lizard/Dr. Curt Connors perfectly.
• The movie had a great story line.

CONS

• The story line was a bit predictable as it basically stuck to the origin story of Spider-Man.
• There was some unnecessary humor.

Police in Kitwe this morning fired tear-gas canisters to disperse traders at Chisokone Market who protested against the presence of Congolese traders following the burning to death of a Zambian truck driver at the Kasumbalesa Border Post last week.

The protesting traders destroyed stalls belonging to Congolese nationals in the market

It was hard for a ZNBC News crew to get a clear picture of the situation because of the tear-gas.

Business came to a standstill as stalls were forced to close as the situation became tense.

Traders shouted that they did not want their Congolese counterparts to conduct business at the Market.

Most of the Congolese traders did not show up at the market today.

Meanwhile, wholesale traders from Chisokone Market staged a peaceful demonstration against plans by the Kitwe City Council to move them to Nakadoli Market.

The traders who matched to the Civic Centre demanded to be addressed by the District Commissioner Elias Kamanga who told them there will be stakeholders meeting at 1400 hours on Monday to resolve the matter.

In Lusaka at Soweto market, some Congolese traders were also harassed over the death of the Zambian truck driver an incident which the Minister of Home Affairs condemned.
