Airtel Zambia has announced the launch of reduced international calling rates to selected destinations. The rates promise to be the most affordable on the market.

Speaking during launch and through the press release Airtel Zambia Marketing Director, Mr. Navdeep Kapur said: “When we launched our Zambitious campaign, we promised that we will introduce some of the coolest rates on the market. To this, we went ahead and established the most popular destinations to determine how best we can delight our customers.”

Airtel customers will need to enrol through a simple process in order to benefit from these tariffs which are on offer immediately. With South Africa proving to be a high traffic destination, rates have been slashed by 75%.

Some of the destinations that customers will be able to call at discounted rates include all neighbouring countries, China and United States of America where customers will be able to call for as low as K10 per second.

Mr. Kapur added, “This is Airtel’s way of saying thank you to its customers for the support, we will continue bringing forth services that are delightful and locally relevant and ensure that our customers benefit. This is Airtel’s commitment to all its customers. Airtel feels that this will augment communication and reduce the cost of doing business”.

President Michael Sata has told investors not to be misled that the PF government is engaged in nationalization of companies.

Mr Sata says the government will only go after companies that were corruptly privatised by the former regime.

He however noted that companies taken over by government will be floated to the public.

Mr Sata said this at state house newly appointed Italian Ambassador to Zambia, Pier Mario Dacco presented letters of credence to President Michael Sata.

The President also received letters of credence from Apostolic Nucio, Julio Murat and Tanzania High Commissioner designate to Zambia, Grace Joan Mujuma.

Nucio Julio Murat urged President Sata to unite all the tribes into one zambia and one nation.

Speaking earlier, Tanzania’s High Commissioner to Zambia Grace Mujuma noted the challenges facing the TAZARA.

She called on leadership from both countries to address the challenges facing the rail firm which is jointly owned by the Zambian and Tanzanian government.

I have no role in government – Kabimba

24
Patriotic Front Secretary General Wynter Kabimba
Patriotic Front Secretary General Wynter Kabimba

Patriotic Front (PF) Secretary General Winter Kabimba says contrary to assertions by some sections of society, he has no supervisory function over any government institution.

Mr. Kabimba said he had no role to play in government and had nothing to do with decision making in government since he was merely the chief administrator of the ruling party.

He stressed that he was just a recipient of President Michael Sata’s prerogative to be the third in command in the PF’s hierarchy.

Mr. Kabimba said this in Livingstone yesterday when he featured on a live phone-in governance program on Radio Musi-oa-Tunya.

However, the PF Secretary General said his party was interested in knowing how social and economic programs contained in its manifesto were being implemented by government on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kabimba described President Michael Sata as a leader of substance as he did not need propaganda from the media to qualify him as a suitable leader.

He said the people of Zambia voted President Sata into power and he did not need any instrument to glorify him unnecessarily.

Furthermore, Mr. Kabimba said the early retirement of Journalists in the public media was not a new phenomenon as all people engaged as employees had to stop working at some point.

He said it was not fair to pick media as a special enclave for early retirement when others in different sectors had also suffered a similar fate.

And Mr. Kabimba said the PF government was made up of selfless leaders and cited the reduction in international presidential trips as a measure that had saved the country billions of kwacha since a single international trip undertaken by the Head of state cost an average of US$1 million (about K5 billion).

He also said the abolishing of user fees in health institutions and reduction in mealie meal prices were all part of the PF’s policy to serve the people and improve their standard of living.

Tribunal ruling set for May 24th

82

Lusaka High Court Judge Fulgency Chisanga has set 24th May as the date for ruling on the application by the State to have the injunction against the tribunal appointed to investigate three suspended Judges dismissed.

Judge Chisanga adjourned the matter this morning after lawyers for the two Judges who have challenged the setting up of the Tribunal made submissions.

The State made its submission yesterday through Solicitor General Musa Mwenye who urged the Court to dismiss the injunction stating that it was premature.

Judge Chisanga on Wednesday granted High Court judges Nigel Mutuna and Charles Kajimanga a stay to prevent the tribunal set up by President Michael Sata to investigate them and Supreme Court Judge Philip Musonda for alleged misconduct.

Government , EIB ink $30 million power deal

27

THE Zambian Government has signed a US$30 million finance contract with the European Investment Bank (EIB) for upgrading of the Kafue-Livingstone electricity power transmission line.

The contract which was signed in Lusaka yesterday by Finance and National Planning Minister Alexander Chikwanda and EIB director Patrick Walsh would enable the EIB to provide a loan amount of Euro 22.0 million or approximately $30.0 million towards the financing of the project.

Mr Chikwanda said the signing occasion would go beyond symbolic significance because electricity was central to the entire development process embracing all sectors of the economy ranging from agriculture to mining and manufacturing.

He said the project would improve the reliability of Zesco’s regional power trade transmission network infrastructure along the Kafue-Victoria Falls Corridor in Southern Province.

He said once completed, the project was expected to upgrade from the existing 220 kilo volts (kV) to 330kV which would in turn increase Zesco’s power transfer capacity to satisfy the potential demand of electricity within Zambia and the neighbouring countries.

Mr Chikwanda said the Zambian Government was faced with huge infrastructure needs which required significant financial resources especially in the transport and energy sectors that were strategic to achieving sustained economic growth.

He, however, said the Government was partnering with the private sector through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement to address the challenge.

He said the Government appreciated the resulting cooperation which he said had high prospects to enhance its benefits from the bank.

EIB vice-president Plutarchos Sakellaris said the project would improve regional energy distribution and double electricity transmission capacity between the Victoria Falls hydro-power station and Lusaka.

Mr Sakellaris said upgrading the Kafue – Livingstone transmission line would assist the Government’s efforts in ensuring that a reliable supply of energy could keep pace with economic growth in Zambia and improve electricity distribution across southern Africa.

He said the EIB was committed to supporting the Zambian energy sector and contributing to global goals highlighted by the 2012 International Year of Sustainable Energy for All.

Head of the delegation of the European Union to Zambia and COMESA, Ambassador Gilles Hervio said access to energy was crucial for the development of Zambia.

Mr Hervio said that energy was important for the delivery of health services, education, food security, business activities, and economic development in general.

Zesco managing director Cyprian Chitundu said that the upgrading of the transmission line project would provide extra power to the Southern and Western provinces of Zambia and other countries in the Southern Africa Power Pool.

He said that the energy improvement scheme would include construction of new substations replacement of energy infrastructure over 50 years old.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2014 and would create significant technical employment during the upgrade.

The original line was built in the 1970s to allow easy and cost-efficient upgrading when necessary.

The transmission line would be supported by the EU-Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund through a total grant of Euro 5.55 million split in two different components which included a Euro5.2 million interest rate subsidy and a Technical Assistance Grant of Euro 350,000 to support procurement and monitoring.

The total project cost is estimated at $100 million and would be co-financed by the EIB, the World Bank and by the project promoter, Zesco.

Ms Tembo said while running to safety, Kalunga ran into people who got him back to the scene of the incident only find a dead body of the school girl.

PF carders in Chibombo threaten to quit the party

Former Chibombo distict commissioner Barnabas Musopelo tries to talk to his supporters after he was removed at Chobombo district commissioner.
Former Chibombo distict commissioner Barnabas Musopelo tries to talk to his supporters after he was removed at Chobombo district commissioner.

Some Patriotic front (PF) carders in Chibombo district have warned President Michael Sata and adamant party secretary General Wynter Kabimba that they will ditch the ruling pary for the opposition if their district chairman Barnabas Musopelo is not re-instated as district Commissioner (DC).

The cadres warned that they worked hard to take Mr Sata to State House, but the man has changed colours now that he is the President. The cadres have complained that Mr Sata is a dictator who does not want to listen to their advise regarding matters at the grassroot level.

Mr Musopelo, who was recently appointed DC for Chibombo was fired and replaced by Ferdinand Chipindi.

Kabwe district commissioner Patrick Chishala tried to officiate at the hand over ceremony, but confusion ensued when the cadres openly refused to let Musopelo vacate office.

They shouted and jeered President Sata, even if he was not present. They want the president to rescind his decision

There was confusion at the district administrative offices when carders protested against the removal of Musopelo and the thin police presence failed to maintain law and order.

Musopelo openly refused vacate the office for Chipindi demanding for a dismissal letter from the President Sata.

He claimed to have an appointment letter from cabinet office and saw no reason to leave the office and maintained he was DC for Chibombo.

‘Chipindi has been appointed DC for Chibombo and I have been appointed for the same position we both have letters of appointment but if chipindi is the one coming in, where is the letter to revoke my appointment, if it is there I have no problem he will come in,’ said Musopelo.

But Chishala pleaded with Musopelo to follow instructions from the Permanent Secretary because his actions amounted to insubordination but Musopelo who resisted and even refused to travel to Kabwe to meet the Permanent Secretary, who he said was at the centre of the confusion.

“I was mistreated by the permanent secretary on Friday last week,” he said.

The matter was resolved after Wynter Kabimba counselled Musopelo theorugh a mobile telephone call.

Musopelo later gave in and welcomed Chishala as new DC. He pledged to work with the new DC saying Chishal was was appointed strategically to ensure that PF and president Sata won the 2016 general elections.

The PF carders who threatened to resign include Robby Malindima, Keembe constituency treasurer and Isaac Ndongo Katuba constituency chairperson.

The duo said Musopelo was a hard working senior cadre and his departure will force them to join the opposition United Party for National Development.

The cadres refused to hear from Musopelo in anger after he tried to plead with them. They alleged that Chindi was a UPND stooge.

They could not understand what transpired to convince mr. musopelo agree to step down because they did not expect him to announce that he was leaving the office for chipindi.

Ndongo said cadres will defect to UPND because PF was not considerate adding Musopelo was the rightful person to for the position of Chibombo DC.

“We cannot work with UPND. In Katuba constituency there is Dr Chikusu who is MMD and he was given a ministerial position, today we are given a UPND man as DC, the whole district now is given to the opposition, where are we as PF, this is not fair,’ he said.

They appealed to president Sata to listen to the people on the ground and rescind the decision for the sake of the party.

Meanwhile, some headmen from Chibombo district, gathered in Kabwe to try and protest the removal of Musopelo from the position of Chibombo DC.

Headmen Kampekete and headmen Kambobe who spoke on behalf other headmen, said they were shocked at the dismissal of Musopelo.

The headmen were disappointed that this had happened when they were plotting to meet President Sata to congratulate him for appointing Musopeplo as DCfor Chibombo because he (Musopelo) hard working and also a senior headman who could mobilise people easily in the district.

“Musopelo, was once chairperson for all headmen in chief liteta and the way he handled matters was marvelous that is why we thought he was the right person to be in that office. But unfortunately some people saw things differently,’ said headman Kampekete.

“He was also in MMD, he quit and became provincial chairperson for UPND where he also failed to perform and now he is brought as DC, we wonder if he will perform,’ said headman Kambobe.

Judges Saga: Now UNZASU wants Chief Justice out

123
Chief Justice Ernest Sakala

The University of Zambia Student’s Union (UNZASU) has now demanded for the immediate resignation of the Chief Justice.

The university lads have also called for the complete overhaul of the judiciary in Zambia.

UNZASU secretary general Sishekanu Mwauluka said the overhaul of the judiciary should have been done immediately the Patrotic Front government assumed office last year.

“As a union, we would like to call on the PF government and the President Michael Sata in particular to seriously consider a total overhaul of the country’s judiciary,” Mwauluka said.

He said UNZASU was convinced that in its current state, the judiciary left much to be desired.

“The best we can do as citizens to salvage the dire state of affairs is to ensure that His Lordship, the Chief Justice Mr Ernest Sakala vacates office immediately,” he said.

Mwauluka said it was clear that the current judiciary did not inspire Zambians and lacked the people’s confidence.

UNZASU and many other interest groups felt let down by Mr Sata who should have acted on the judiciary immediately he was inaugurated as the fifth President of Zambia.

Mwauluka said Zambia should go emulate Kenyawhere the judiciary was remodelled adding that Zambians voted for change and this change should also be seen in the judiciary.

He emphasised that Mr Sata must ensure that whatever was done in overhauling the judiciary be above board and within the confines of the law.

He said the government should be warned that UNZASU would not support any illegalities in these processes because the student body would not tolerate or support any illegalities and especially that the current UNZASU executive was not for hire.

“We would also like to counsel our learned judges that we will not resist any attempts to use the court system as a political launch pad.

The call from UNZASU in supporting the government has not surprised many people in Zambia.

Mr Mwauluka is among the students who are on record to be on the payroll of the Patrotic Front government and all that he is doing and saying is a direct sponsorship of the state.

The Southern Africa Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has said Mwauluka and his fellow students must desist from being used by politicians.

SACCORD says that Mr Mwauluka should not take his personal opinions to represent the majority of the students at the University of Zambia.

Bittersweet Poetry : Poems of the week by Kulijekusuzyika Jr Nyambili and Edwina Muzunda

As we continue to promote Poetry in Zambia ; here are this weeks poems ,enjoy.

I DANCE & Cry by Kulijekusuzyika Jr Nyambili

At dawn am awaken by the beat of an African rhythm

And my body is filled with enthusiasm

As though it’s a dream, yet so real

It’s the sound of the cradle of mankind; the true sound of Africa

Because everything begun in Africa

My hands clap, and my feet?? My feet so eager to stamp the ground on which my forefathers danced

As these my bare African feet stamp the ground

My surrounding is filled with dust and my spirit is awakened

The spirit of a true son of Africa

Lost in the rhythm, I open my eyes

Only to realize that am surrounded by a crop of sons and daughters of Africa

And we are lost in our traditions of rhythm

As we dance, I can feel the spirit of unity and love, a bond of peace and laughter

But suddenly! My laughter and joy is cut short

My enthusiasm turned into trembling

My laughter only seems to be but for a Limited time

Sons and daughters of my land in chains and pain

Famine in the midst of plenty, Hunger and strive when others big cars they drive

If I had a chance this pain I would shred and grind!! When we have sight we seem blind

In my humble compound what I hear is whaling and crying

Empty pots and thus empty stomach

Every day is a struggle, we struggle to survive and thus we weaken our muscle

Political masturbation and prostitution is the order of the day

They represent our interest so they say!

But for them, in our interest is a big car and allowances while our children are left to walk kilometers to get an education and health

What they say is in our interest I see it from the terraces

Am afflicted by disease but their luxury never seems to cease

They say they work for my interest but I struggle for my own rest

I would never survive if I lived with ease but with ease their wealth they increase

While our poverty, pain and disease is increase

Every day our people become diseased and deceased

Our women for year’s bed ridden, our men even worse! Our men even worse!

Our children die before five, while their children start school before five

Our children sit on logs in class! Their lap is their table

While their children sit on furnished sits and tables

In the midst of all this I will not stop to dance

Through my dance this pain I relive

I will not keep quiet I will speak

Through my poetry I will speak

Through my dance I will speak

As we pray for grace.

Amen!

IAM HIP-HOP by Edwina Muzunda

I am hip hop.

An element of the beatbox when my heart to every beat beats and to every sound skips.

Every step i make is a tiny foot in the shoe prints of the great who went ahead of me.

A history on my every path, some already created, most i’m creating.

Iam poetry. A striking resemblance between me and every word carefully picked to describe greatness, awesomeness, and everything in between.

The rhyming words describing how the bits of my life fall into place to make rhythm with the master’s plan for me. Iam every word used to stimulate varied emotions in myself, and all who care to be influenced.

Iam musical, lyrical, critical, stubborn & political. Argumantative and i think evrything is debateable. Maybe thats why im an advocate-of peace & justice; for the lost & voiceless, the weak and powerless.

Iam but a child.

With a constant need to be checked on,by a loving friend or a plotting foe.

A need for a spiritual guide and a need for a life coach.

A need for mentorship and for mentoring.

Iam many many things. A thousand things in one. A triune being, spirit soul body, as evidence of the triune God,father, son,Holy Spirit.

Iam just the created, @ my best when i exist in Him,in whom i live, breathe, move, and have my being.

Iam hiphop-every beat of my heart beats to every command of His.

Every step i take.a tiny foot in the path he ordains,in the prints he walked.

Iam bold and iam beautiful, because He makes me who iam.

Injunction against tribunal is illegal and amounts to a direct attack on the President’s decision – Zulu

106
Justice Minister Sebastian Zulu
Justice Minister Sebastian Zulu

Justice minister Sebastian Zulu has described the decision by the Lusaka High court to stay proceedings of the Tribunal appointed by President Michael Sata to probe the alleged professional misconduct of three suspended Judges as illegal.

Mr. Zulu says the court’s decision is an illegal and amounts to a direct attack on the president’s decision.

He says government is surprised that the judiciary is refusing to be accountable to the people by not allowing the exercise of its power to be checked by the executive through the procedures provided in the constitution.

Mr Zulu has told a media briefing in Lusaka that this is the first time since independence that the judiciary has acted in such a manner.

He warned that the growing trend where the country is having a dictatorship of the judiciary is a recipe for anarchy.

The Justice Minister stated that if such a trend is not addressed, it may lead the country into serious problems.

Mr. Zulu says the judiciary should not shield itself from investigations.

He says the people of Zambia are tired of complaints of incompetence, corruption, and collusion in the judiciary.

Mr Zulu adds that government has given the judiciary enough time to correct itself and that it is the hope of the government that they will not betray the aspirations of the Zambian people.

Lusaka High Court Judge Flugence Chisanga yesterday May 16,2012 stayed proceedings of a Tribunal appointed by President Sata to investigate the misconduct of a supreme Court Judge and two High Court Judges after arguments that it was illegal and premature.

Meanwhile Solicitor General Musa Mwenye has applied to the High Court to have the stay of execution of the tribunal revoked. Mr Zulu has confirmed and that application to have the stay revoked will be heard this afternoon.

He has further called on the judiciary to work with the government to ensure that there is smooth delivery of justice in the country.
