Gen Miyanda blames Zambians for failed constitution

91
Brig. Gen Miyanda Second from Left

Heritage party president Godfrey Miyanda has charged that Zambians are to blame for the failure of the constitution bill.

Brigadier General Miyanda says it is a pity that political leaders have taken advantage of people which should not be the case.

General Miyanda says Zambians should not allow to be taken advantage of by politicians.

He says had he been in government,he would have ensured that that the constitutional bill went through the second reading stage.

General Miyanda has also charged that calls for republican vice president George Kunda to resign are ill timed.

He says Zambia will soon be going for elections, and that the resignation of the vice president might simply create other challenges.

General Miyanda adds that Zambians should use the forthcoming elections as an opportunity to correct the noted ills in the governance process.

Government U-turns on the painting of Public Transport vehicles

58

MINISTER of Communications and Transport Geoffrey Lungwangwa has announced that the Government has suspended the revoking of a Statutory Instrument that compels Public Service Vehicles (PSV) operators to maintain a stipulated colour code for their vehicles.

According to Zambia National Broadcasting Services (ZNBC) main news bulletin monitored last night, Professor Lungwangwa said in Lusaka that the suspension of the statutory instrument followed numerous concerns from members of the public and would hold consultations with various key stakeholders.

The minister had on Friday announced the abolition of regulation 14A of statutory instrument no 115 of 2000, which compelled public service vehicles operators to paint their vehicles in sky blue colour.

The statutory instrument no 31 of 2011, which was to come into effect 30 days after the date of publication in the gazette, was going to allow operators to paint their vehicles in any color of their choice.

Communication and Transport minister Professor Godfrey Lungwangwa said the removal of the colour code for Public Service Vehicles was going to directly reduce the compliance costs of entry into the business by all PSV operators.

Professor Lungwangwa also said that the move was in response to bus operators and advertising firms request to government to reconsider the colour code so as to exploit the business opportunity of utilizing PSVs as channels of effective information dissemination.

Zambia records over $7bn in 2010 exports

Commerce and Trade Minister Felix Mutati

ZAMBIA has recorded more than US $7 billion worth of exports for 2010 as compared to $4.312 billion for 2009 following expansion in investments and improvement in market access.

Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Felix Mutati said Zambia registered a 29 per cent rise in exports of commodities from 2008 to 2010 and its major exports included copper, cobalt, electricity and tobacco.

Mr Mutati said most of Zambiaís main exports were headed for the United Kingdom (UK), Switzerland, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

In the year 2008, export figures stood at $5, 098,688,004 and later dropped to $4,312,054,540 in 2009 but went up to $7,200,267,057 in 2010 respectively.

“Our increase in the exports of the commodities to the UK, Switzerland, Tanzainia, Zimbabwe and South Africa is as a result of improved market access particularly in the rules of access such as the Free Trade Area,’’ Mr Mutati said in response to a Press query.

The minister said the share of the non-traditional exports (NTEs) to the total exports had been growing from 19 per cent in 2006 to 23 per cent in 2009.

He said Zambia endeavors to diversify its exports products both to the region and international markets and focus on NTEs.

The Government’s target was to increase NTE to 30 per cent of the total exports by 2015.

The top five destinations for Zambia’s exports are Switzerland, China, South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and United Arabs Emirates.

Mr Mutati said the Government had put in place measures to transform the industrial sector by expanding the industrial base and increase value addition.
Value addition would be through the development of the Multi-Facility Economic Zones
(MFEZ) and Industrial Parks.

Mr Mutati said the measure put in place would help expand the export base especially with the development of the MFEZ.

“ We will continue to promote the development of the MFEZ in Zambia aimed at increasing local and foreign direct investment, employment creation, skills development and transfer to local entrepreneurs and communities as well as contribute to the diversification of the economy,’’ he said.

2010/11 maize output to record 25 p.c. increase

Maize from the bumper harvest in Kapiri Mposhi
FLASHBACK: Maize from the bumper harvest in Kapiri Mposhi

ZAMBIA’S maize production is this year expected go up by between 280,000 and 700,000 tonnes, Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister, Eustarckio Kazonga has said.

Dr Kazonga said preliminary results indicated that the maize output will go up by between 10 and 25 per cent of 2009/10’s production of 2.8 million tonnes.

Apart from the optimum climatic conditions, the minister attributed the 2010/11 production to the increase in the Farmers Input Support Programm (FISP) from 106,000 tonnes to 178,000 tonnes.

The other reason is the enlarged hectarage cultivated by the farmers countrywide coupled with risen number of farmers.

“The rainfall has been very favourable and with yields also expected to rise, maize production should increase by between 10 and 25 per cent,” he said.

Zambia’s maize yields rose about 34 per cent to 2.25 tonnes per hectare in the 2009/10 season and were expected to increase further this season due to enhanced extension services.

“The (number of) small-scale farmers we provided with subsidised seed and fertiliser also increased to almost 900,000 from last year’s 534,000.

“The amount of input allocated under the FISP rose from 106,000 tonnes last season to 178,000 tonnes and that is a great increase,” he said.

Dr Kazonga said the final crop forecast would be announced immediately the experts completed the compilation of the data.

UPND disputes PF’s popularity in Western Province

168

The United Party for National Development (UPND) chairman for Livestock and fisheries captain Lawrence Nyambe has refuted claims by the opposition Patriotic Front that it is gaining popularity in the western province.

Captain Nyambe has told QFM news that the Mr. Sata’s popularity is only in the post newspapers and not anywhere else in western province.

Captain Nyambe says the people of western Province have not forgotten how Mr. Sata handled the issue of the Barotseland Agreement the time he was a cabinet minister in the MMD cabinet.

He adds that the people of western province do not trust Mr. Sata because of his inconsistencies.

Captain Nyambe has also noted that the defection of the Top leadership members led by Induna Imbwae of western province to the PF party has not affected the party in anyway.

He says Induna imbwae did not add any value to the UPND in western province the time he was a member.

Meanwhile, Times of Zambia reports that  United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema has urged Zambians to stand by the declaration of the country as a Christian Nation and reject politicians advocating Homosexuality as a human right.

Addressing a rally at Chief Chamuka’s Chikonkomene Village in Kabwe rural at the weekend, Mr Hichilema said politicians advocating homosexuality should be condemned and rejected because Zambia was built on the foundation of being a Christian nation where those preaching for homosexuality must be shunned at all cost.

“If men marry each other how do they produce children? We must all stand up and condemn such politicians because Zambia is a Christian nation which is totally against such activities “Mr Hichilema said.

He urged all political leaders and the general public to continue preaching peace as the country goes to the elections.

Mr Hichilema who was flanked by his members of parliament Douglas Siakalima for Siavonga, Bright Hamusonde for Nangoma and Muchi Habeenzu for Chikankata as well as other senior party officials, also urged Zambians to reject violent political leaders saying 2011 was a year to embrace each other.

“Zambia is a Christian Nation and I am urging you to strongly reject political leaders advocating for Homosexuality in the country. And as we go to the elections, the let also reject politicians advocating violence, vote wisely in order to chose leaders that are capable of delivering their promises to the Zambians in a very peaceful atmosphere,” he said.

[pullquote]“If men marry each other how do they produce children? We must all stand up and condemn such politicians because Zambia is a Christian nation which is totally against such activities “Mr Hichilema said.[/pullquote]

Mr hichilema commended farmers of Chikonkomene village for having contributed to the country’s bumper harvest.

Meanwhile, the United Progressive People (UPP) president Saviour Chishimba has said his party will defend Zambia’s declaration as a Christian nation and has warned Zambians against electing leaders who are not God-fearing.

Dr Chishimba, who is the UPP presidential candidate, said his party was determined to use this year’s tripartite elections to strengthen the Zambian people’s resolve to maintain Zambia as a Christian nation, which declaration is now under threat.

He said Zambia was declared as a Christian nation and it was up to the Zambian people to use this year’s tripartite elections to ensure that their ‘covenant’ with God was upheld by electing God fearing national leaders during the tripartite elections.

“It is important for the people of Zambia to first seek God’s guidance on the selection of people they want to lead the nation in the next five years,” he said.

Dr Chishimba said his party would do everything possible to defend Zambia’s status as a Christian nation.

He said the UPP was making preparations to field parliamentary candidates in all the 150 constituencies and would not compromise on only accepting God-fearing leadership.

Nothing Wasted

10

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“After everyone was full, Jesus told His disciples, “Now gather the leftovers, so that nothing is wasted”
(John 6:12, NLT).

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

The Bible tells of a time when Jesus fed a crowd of five thousand with only five loaves and two fish. That day, everyone had more than enough to eat, and there were still twelve baskets full of bread and fish leftover—more than what they started with! We serve a God of abundance! I love that Jesus told the disciples to collect all the leftovers “so that nothing is wasted.” With God, nothing is ever wasted. He’ll never waste an experience, He’ll never waste a hurt, He’ll never waste a dream, He’ll never waste even a single piece of bread.

If you’ve felt like you’ve wasted years of your life in the wrong job, hanging around the wrong people, doing the wrong things, God will gather those years and restore them back to you. He’ll take those experiences that the enemy meant for your harm and turn them around for your good. He’ll make you stronger, wiser and better off than you were before. He can launch you further into your destiny than before. Be encouraged today because with God all things are possible and nothing is ever wasted!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Heavenly Father, I give You every bit of my life, my past, my present and my future. Thank You for taking every experience in my life and turning it around for my good. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

LCC effective despite councillors’ suspension

6
Lusaka Main post office

THE Lusaka City Council (LCC) says the suspension of the mayor and councillors has not negatively affected the performance of the local authority contrary to suggestions by some sections of society.

LCC public relations manager Chanda Makanta said the local authority is also effectively managing bus stations and markets in the city in the aftermath of wrangles at some of the sites recently.

Ms Makanta said in an interview that the LCC has not experienced any crippling challenges and has continued to function normally as before.

Government recently suspended Lusaka mayor Daniel Chisenga and councillors at the Patriotic Front-led council to pave way for investigations into alleged financial irregularities.

Copperbelt Province-based local government officer Solomon Sakala has been appointed to oversee the affairs of the council.

Ms Makanta said the LCC will endeavour and continue to operate effectively even without the councillors.

“The LCC has placed management to run the bus stations. We had read that cadres (from political parties) had taken over the stations but that is not the case. All bus stations are managed by the city council. Whatever happened and was talked about has been resolved amicably,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ms Makanta has advised liquor traders at Lusaka’s COMESA market to wind up their business operations by the end of this month.

She said the LCC public health department has since issued letters notifying the traders to stop liquor trading at the premises.

Ms Makanta said the LCC has exhausted ultimatums saying this is the final warning to the traders and that failure to comply with the order will attract punitive measures.

Meanwhile, LEON HAANGALA reports that the LCC says that its plans to extend the Lusaka city road network are still in the pipeline.

Ms Makanta said that plans to construct ring roads, in co-operation with the Japanese government, are still alive.

“We have planned to construct ring roads but some houses may have to be demolished in the process.

However, the owners of these structures will be compensated in form of either money or other accommodation,” she said.

She said, however, that Lusaka residents should not panic as these are still plans.

Ms Makanta has also apologised for the inconvenience being caused by the closure of a segment of Church Road to facilitate expansion of the road at Levy Junction Mall which is under construction.

“We are well aware that the closure of church road has caused congestion, however we need motorists to be patient as this expansion will serve to help ease traffic when the mall is opened,” she said.

Ronnie counsels visionless Sata

47

GOVERNMENT has described as ‘political blindness’ Patriotic Front president Michael Sata’s sentiments that he cannot see on-going developmental projects Government has undertaken throughout Zambia.

Chief Government spokesperson Ronnie Shikapwasha said yesterday that every Zambian can attest to the number of schools and hospitals that are being built and rehabilitated.

Information Minister Ronnie Shikapwasha

Speaking during a phone-in Radio Phoenix programme on Friday, MrSata accused Government of using cheap propaganda by stating that it has built schools and hospitals.

“The development projects that Government has undertaken are very visible and the people of Zambia are appreciating. It’s only MrSata who is not a good leader who is not appreciating what the government is doing,” Lieutenant-General Shikapwasha said.

He said a good opposition leader appreciates even what the people in Government are doing, especially projects benefiting citizens.

Lt-Gen Shikapwasha said most of the hospitals such as the Lusaka hospital and the Chongwehospital are very visible because they are built on the Great East Road.

He said many high schools, too, such as Kacholola in Nyimba and Mumbwa, are also clearly visible.

Lt-Gen Shikapwasha said the mobile hospitals the PF leader is criticising are in the country and citizens are already appreciating the services.

He said the hospitals are on 4X4 wheels and will be able to reach all rural areas in the country.

On homosexuality, Lt-Gen Shikapwasha said Mr Sata should not try to run away from what he told Danish journalists that he would legalise homosexuality if he became president of Zambia.

He said Mr Sata’s sentiments of legalising homosexuality are demonic and he owes Zambians an apology.

Lt-Gen Shikapwasha said MrSata is on tape and it is insincere of him to accuse Government of selling propaganda on him.

He said Government will not be distracted by opposition leaders like MrSata from its agenda of bringing meaningful development in the country.

“Let him continue criticising us. He will never bring us down. We are a government that is focused on developing Zambia,” Lt-Gen Shikapwasha said.
