Nkana Fans Riot Following Forest Loss

4

Nkana’s easily -combustible fans exploded today in a last 10 minutes of drama at Dola Hill in Ndola in coach Linos Makwaza’s first emotional return to Forest Rangers since his appointment last week that was blighted by a 2-1 away defeat by the fallen Kitwe giants.

The game was halted with four minutes left of the match during a last nine minute period in which all three goals in the match were scored.

Nkana took the lead through striker Evans Kangwa in the 81st minute to raise Makwaza’s hopes of bragging rights against Forest who unceremoniously fired him after three winless games at the start of the season with one club official branding him “Mr. Defeat.”

Forest rallied three minutes later when former Zambia striker Owen Kaposa equalized before he won a penalty in the 86th minute that was later converted by Peter Banda before all hell broke loose and the game was halted for 10 minutes.

Police allegedly fired shots in the air to try and calm the temperature at Dola Hill before the game resumed with emotions still high until the final whistle but the commotion continued and the law later made over half a dozen arrests in the process.

The pressure will shift to Wusakile on Monday when Nkana host Green Buffaloes in a delayed Week 14 game in what is expected to be a tense situation after three successive defeats and two losses on the trot for Makwaza since taking over the helms a week ago.

Meanwhile, there was some civilized drama up in Chililabombwe at Konkola stadium where Konkola Blades dispatched Zesco United to their first league defeat of the season.

Patrick Kasunga put Blades ahead in the 25th minute but Nicholas Zulu leveled scores two minutes after the break.

Felix Sunzu Junior scored his third goal in as many goals with the winner in the 79th minute.

Zesco remain at the top of the table on 34 points but enjoy a narrow two-point lead over Nchanga Rangers who beat Roan United 2-0 away in Luanshya today thanks to goals from Chileshe Kabwe and Ignatius Mukota.

Power Dynamos remained a close third on 31 points following a 1-0 win over Kabwe Warriors at Arthur Davies stadium courtesy of a 30th minute goal from Luka Lungu.

Illegal fishing vessels threatens Kapenta Industry on Lake Kariba

The Kapenta fish operators from Sinazongwe have bemoaned that the industry is collapsing owing to high number of illegal fishing vessels being thrown on the Lake Kariba .

Maaze Holdings Director Johann Jordan said there are about 1000 vessels for catching Kapenta on the Zambian side of Lake Kariba while the Fisheries department has issued about 715 licences.

Mr Jordan pointed out that the Kapenta industry which is the largest employer of people from Siavonga to Sinazongwe district in Southern Province is threatened.

He said the stocks of kapenta on the Lake is depleting because people were throwing their vessels on the lake without licences and there is no control from the Fisheries department.

Mr Jordan disclosed that people were fishing anyhow in the breeding areas and the Kapenta catches have drastically reduced.

He said the poor people would be affected once the price of kapenta was increased because of its scarcity.

The Maaze holding Director who has been in the Kapenta industry for so many years said some people with illegal fishing vessels were allegedly stealing Kapenta from other people’s vessels.

He said the fisheries department charged with the responsibility of preserving the fishing stocks were not conducting patrols on the lake adding that previously they were conducting them together with Kapenta operators but they have stopped.

“There is no control in the Kapenta industry, people are fishing any in the breeding areas and there are no road blocks to curb the theft,” Mr Jordan said.

He explained that according to the Southern African Development Community’ (SADC) protocol, Kapenta operators are supposed to be producing 50000 tones of kapenta per year for sustainability of the species.

He said at the time of signing the protocol the Zambians had about 230 vessels for catching Kapenta while Zimbabwe had 260.

It was also agreed that to increase the number of vessels on the lake a study had to be conducted to ensure the sustainability of the industry.

LakaFish Director John Hutchison said the SADC protocol also indicated that only 500 vessels were to be allowed on Lake Kariba for the industry to be sustainable but that limit has been abandoned and people own illegal fishing vessels.

Mr Hutchison said they were worried because once people lose their jobs their families and dependants would be affected.

He said he suspects there is some political influence attached to the increase of fishing vessels on the lake which is threatening the sustainability of kapenta stocks.

The Lakafish Director who has been fishing for over 18 years said the department of fisheries should release information concerning their study of the Kapenta stocks on the Lake which has allowed them to issue so many licences to the Kapenta operators.

Mr Hutchison said he was not worried about the number of vessels on the lake as long as it is based on the study and the system is sustainable.

Another Kapenta Operator Dodo Sindaza said the influx of Kapenta fishing vessels should be controlled.

Mr Sindaza called for coordination among the fisheries department and the Marine department under the Ministry of Transport and Communication to ensure that sanity was brought to the Kapenta industry in the valley.

He said most people have found it easy to enter the Kapenta industry without following the right procedures which is threatening the industry.

VEEP says PF/UPND pact is paralysed

26
Vice president George Kunda

Vice President George Kunda has said the Patriotic Front and United Party for National Development (PF-UPND) pact is in a state of paralysis and is bound to collapse any time.

Mr Kunda said as a result of the confusion in the pact, people are leaving the pact parties in large numbers to join the ruling Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD).

The Vice President was speaking today when he addressed Mansa residents who welcomed him at the airport before he proceeded to Mwansabombwe to officiate at this year’s Mutomboko ceremony.

He urged MMD members across the country, especially those in Mansa were the party has started gaining strength, to take advantage of the confusion in the pact to unite the ruling party.

“You must be united and take advantage of the confusion in the pact to strengthen our party, the ruling MMD,” Mr Kunda said.

He charged that as a result of the confusion in the pact, UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has even stopped being seen in public as he has gone into hiding due to shame.

“We are not reading about him anymore since they started quarreling with Michael Sata. Because of shame, HH has gone into hiding.” The Vice President said

Mr Kunda further said that PF leader Michael Sata does not like the people of Luapula, as he has been suspending MPs in the province from his party and has also been insulting the royal highnesses in the area.

He appealed to the people of Luapula to continue rejecting Mr Sata and his party as he has no respect for the traditional chiefs.

Mr Kunda encouraged MMD members in the province to promote unity in order to strengthen the party instead of endorsing suspensions.

He said the suspension of party members is not good for the MMD as a party and has appealed to the party membership in Luapula province to desist from the practice.

“Just here I saw one poster saying we are tired of suspensions. This shows that people are tired of suspensions,” He said.

Mr Kunda noted that MMD as party must lead by example in desisting from suspending its members to encourage unity in the ruling party.

“For us in MMD we must lead by example, especially here in Mansa where we are gaining strength. We must be united in this province and throughout the country behind President Rupiah Banda.” he said.

He called for pro-activeness among party members to forestall any confusion in the party by reporting any provincial member identified to be fermenting disorder.

Mr Kunda assured the people of Luapula that government will continue supporting the hosting of the Mutomboko traditional ceremony because it is a traditional ceremony of international recognition and provides an opportunity for government leaders to share developmental ideas with the people of the province.

And speaking earlier, Luapula Province MMD Provincial Chairman, Emmanuel Chungu appealed to government to work on some important roads which have not been worked on.

He also said that government should find quickest ways to address the plight of former Mansa batteries workers who have not been paid their dues since the closure of the battery company in the early 1990s.

Presidents Banda and Wa Mutharika impressed with Zambian farmers

File : Peasant farmers selling part of their maize harvest

President Rupiah Banda says the zeal of Zambian farmers to produce food and cash crops was very encouraging.

Speaking after touring a number of stands in the Lusaka Show Grounds this morning, President Banda said he was impressed with what he saw on exhibition in different stands today.

“This is something that is very encouraging. It is encouraging to see people especially in provincial stands producing so much food,” he said.

He said the production of over 2.7 million metric tones of maize this year was an indication that Zambia was on the right track in terms of food security and economic development.

President Banda said in order to sustain such development, there was need for Zambians to be united and uphold the peace which the country has been enjoying since gaining political independence 46 year ago.

And President of Malawi, Bingu Wa Mutharika, said Zambia has tremendously improved its agricultural activities over the years.

Professor Wa Mutharika said Zambian farmers have also improved the packaging of their farm products, which he said will create a lot of markets for them.

“I came to this show ground a long time ago when I was Secretary General of COMESA. But now there is great improvement. I would say keep it up,” he said.

Earlier, President Banda and President Bingu Wa Mutharika, separately toured various stands which included Lima Hall housing exhibits of agricultural products from all nine provinces of Zambia, ZAMSEED, Workers Compensation Fund Control Board, ZAIN and Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC).

Other stands the Presidents toured are Malawi and Kenya stands in the Jubilee Hall, Zambia Chamber of Small and Medium Business Association (ZCSMBA) Environmental Council of Zambia, Energy Regulation Board (ERB), Bankers Association of Zambia, and Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives.

The rest are SAROS Agro Business, Conservation Farming Unit under the Ministry of Agriculture and ZAMBEEF.

Some ministers and other senior government officials accompanied the two presidents on the tour of stands.

The two Presidents are scheduled to officially open the 84th Zambia Agricultural and Commercial Show this afternoon.

This year’s show is being held under theme ‘Sustainable Development’.

Hundreds of local companies and over 15 countries are exhibiting at this year’s Agricultural and Commercial Show, which opened its doors to the public two days ago and closes on Monday, August 2nd 2010.

‘Don’t look to the West’

Dr Kenneth Kaunda

Malawian President Bingu Wa Mutharika has said Africa should not wait for the West to prescribe solutions for its problems.

And Zambia’s first president, Kenneth Kaunda has said Africa’s journey to prosperity needs prudent and decisive decisions for the continent to attain sustainable economic and social development.

Speaking yesterday in Lusaka when he paid a courtesy call on Dr Kaunda at his Kabulonga office, President Wa Mutharika said Africa’s future depended on cooperation by its leaders.[pullquote]I believe that the memoirs Dr Kaunda is writing are really not addressed to Zambians or Africa but to the entire world[/pullquote]

“We shouldn’t wait for the West to come and tell us what we should do. I have told Washington that I know my problems and we know the solutions.

“I want our children to know that while there is an Africa of hopelessness, an Africa of hunger, there is also another Africa, an Africa of opportunities,” he said.

He said five years from now, issues of food shortages would be history for Malawi and Zambia, given the good performance of both countries.

“We do not have to go overseas to beg for food, Malawi and Zambia can actually feed some parts of SADC,” he said.

Prof Wa Mutharika said he was happy to learn that Dr Kaunda was writing his memoirs.

He said he has been inspired by Dr Kaunda’s writings on humanism.

“I believe that the memoirs Dr Kaunda is writing are really not addressed to Zambians or Africa but to the entire world,” he said.

Dr Kaunda said African countries were on a journey to prosperity, and that time had come for the continent to rethink its economic strategy.

He said agriculture should be considered as the mainstay of the economies of African countries.

Extended family needs to be restored

12
An extended family

A Social Welfare Officer in Solwezi has called for the promotion and establishment of the Ubuntu spirit or culture where the extended family should be promoted.

Mrs. Mujinga Kamalonga said that even as much as the department of social welfare had social welfare funds to give to the vulnerable, especially the orphans and widows, it did not give directly to the intended recipients.

“ We try to find out where the extended family is. We interview the orphans and try to trace where their uncles and aunties are and why they are unable to
support them ,” she said .

The Social Welfare officer underscored that the department counselled families on the importance of Ubuntu Spirit and embracing the extended family system.

She added that Social welfare was about promoting family unity saying Government alone could fight streetism but that this should start with families
who should bear the responsibility of looking after all the orphaned children.

The levels of vulnerable people and orphaned children in society have continued to increase as they have little or no support from members of available family members.

This in the end makes many of the vulnerable people to seek alternatives means of survival such as streetism, in the case of the orphaned children.

On the other hand, the spirit of Ubuntu has proved a success in most parts of Africa particularly in South Africa where the government of the day is obliged to
support the native people with various social needs such as employment and economic empowerment.

Zambia's High Commission to South Africa, Leslie Mbula

The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Business Foundation (NBF) delegation is expected to arrive in Zambia on Monday 2nd August 2010, to hold talks with various ministries.

This is in response to a workshop that was held in Johannesburg last year between NBF and the PPP Unit under the Ministry of Finance and National Planning and the Ministry of Works and Supply.

Outgoing Zambia’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Leslie Mbula said in a statement to ZANIS in Lusaka today that the high powered trade mission which is coming to Zambia is based in South Africa.

Mr. Mbula said the team would also hold talks with the National Construction Council (NCC) and other stakeholders on infrastructure development and other aspects of economic development.

This is contained in a press statement issued to ZANIS by Second Secretary for Press at the Zambian Embassy in South Africa, Phillip Chirwa.

He said the team, which will comprise representatives of financial and consulting companies, contractors and suppliers of industrial equipment, would be led by Mr. Paul Runge, a consultant with NBF and proprietor of Africa Project Access.

He said the delegation would engage their Zambian counterparts and other public institutions on the practical implementation of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects, which the Zambia government had prioritised.

A number of PPP projects are in the energy, transport, road, housing, water and communications sectors respectively.

Mr. Mbula further urged the NCC and other stakeholders to fully engage the NBF delegation, especially that good infrastructure was of paramount importance towards economic development.

The NEPAD Business Foundation is a body of business organisations committed to delivering on the NEPAD ideals of alleviating poverty, halting the marginalisation of Africa in the globalisation process and fully integrating Africa into the global economy.

The visiting trade delegation will be in Zambia from 2nd to 5th August 2010.

ZESCO’s tariff hike is justifiable-BOZ Chief

Bank of Zambia of Zambia governor Caleb Fundanga and his Deputy Denny Kalyalya

Bank of Zambia Governor Caleb Fundanga has said ZESCO’s decision to increase electricity tariffs to 25.6 percent was justifiable for a growing economy like Zambia.

Dr. Fundanga said the increase in ZESCO tariffs was vital for increased production of power by the utility company.

The Governor also noted that the increase would help reduce the continued load shedding of electricity as the utility company would boost its production base.

He said increased power supply would result in increased consumer products which would help the country maintain single digit inflation.

Dr. Fundanga said this in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today shortly after the conducted tour of the BOZ stand at the 84th Agriculture and Commercial Show whose theme is ‘’Sustainable Development’’.

He also noted that the increase would also help ZESCO invest more in generation facilities such as the Itezi-Itezi power plant which is expected to be constructed this year.

Meanwhile, BOZ Deputy Governor for operations Denny Kalyalya said the central bank was working hand in hand with commercial banks in the country to ensure strict measures were put in place to protect customers’ accounts.

Dr. Kalyaya said restrictions had so far been put in place by various commercial banks especially on how much one withdraws from his account.

He stated that this would help both customers and the bank to monitor the operations of one’s account. He has since called on customers to report to relevant authorities once they noticed any abnormalities on their accounts.

Recently a scam was unearthed where some conmen had invaded the Visa system and in the process stealing money online leading to loss of income by members of the public.

Vodafone Ghana going through turbulent times, dealers accuse Amon Jere, 34 of deception

51

Vodafone Ghana is presently going through turbulent times as some major distributors and dealers in its products are withdrawing from working with the company, investigations by The Enquirer have revealed.

The Enquirer can confirm that six out of the 10 distribution companies do not have anything to do with Vodafone Ghana presently, because of unfriendly business policies being implemented by Mr. Amon Jere, a Zambian, who is the head of Sales and Distribution.
In April 2009, Vodafone re-engaged 10 old Ghana Telecom national dealers to operate as exclusive regional dealers in all parts of the country.

When The Enquirer contacted some of the directors of the accredited dealers, they confirmed that they are no longer operational due to the policies of Amon Jere, the Zambian, and have taken Vodafone to court.

The dealers claimed they were made to provide GH¢1 million guarantee, provide a working capital of GH¢500,000, each of them was forced to buy two vans for road shows, employ a minimum of 150 freelancers, and open not less than seven shops with staff in their respective regions.

The accredited dealers accused Amon Jere of deceiving them and being the cause of their indebtedness. The directors of these distribution houses complained bitterly that after incurring so much cost to set up their structures, Vodafone itself is also selling directly to retailers at a lower price (10% discount) and thereby preventing the retailers to deal with them (the dealers).

The dealers purchase the recharge products at 8 per cent, while the retailers get at lower rate with 10 per cent discount. Amon Jere, 34, is the very person, who sometime last year, was alleged to have insulted Ghanaians, saying their lazy and questioned the standard of Ghanaian education during a training session of the Vodafone sales team at La Palm Hotel in Accra.

Vodafone is alleged to be paying Amon Jere US$30,000 plus 1% of the total sales of Vodafone recharge cards every month!

‘The media should be regulated’ – Veep

Vice president George Kunda and his wife Irene
Vice president George Kunda has maintained that the media in Zambia need statutory media regulation.

Mr. Kunda has noted that the standards of journalism in the country have continued to deteriorate.

He said the position of the government is that the media should be regulated through a statutory regulation.

During the vice presidents question time in parliament this morning, Mr. Kunda observed that some outlets of the media in the country have continued to be unethical.

He added that if the government comes up with the statutory regulation, a larger percentage will be borrowed from the Fringila consensus.

The vice president further said that wide extensive consultation will be made from the media in coming up with the statutory regulation of the media.

And Mr. Kunda has said there is still a lot of time to capture the 2.5 million additional voters on the ongoing voter registration exercise.

He has expressed confidence that the targeted number of the voters will be captured, and has since called for extensive sensitization by all Zambians.

[/pullquote]

Meanwhile President Rupiah Banda has said Zambia’s bumper maize harvest will guarantee food security for the citizens and more income for small scale farmers.

Mr Banda said in Lusaka yesterday the country was focusing on investing in agriculture and the abundant maize produced this year would help strengthen the country’s food security.

He said the subject of food security had captured the attention of the international community in the past few years because more than one million people were going hungry every year, according to Food and Agriculture Organisation statistics.

The president said this at Hotel Inter-Continental in Lusaka during a State Banquet held in honour of the visiting leader of Malawi, Bingu wa Mutharika.

Former Zambian presidents Kenneth Kaunda and Frederick Chiluba, Chief Justice Ernest Sakala, Cabinet and deputy ministers from Malawi and Zambia, diplomats accredited to Zambia, and Government officials were among those who attended the banquet.

Mr Banda said year’s Zambia Agriculture and Commercial Show was happening in special circumstances as the country and the peasant farming community were reaping another bumper harvest of the staple crop.

He said Zambians should feel that their efforts in increasing food production would in the long run begin to have a major impact on fighting poverty and hunger, and that small-holder farmers would be food-secure, apart from increasing their incomes.

Mr Banda said Zambia was taking a leaf from the Malawi’s success in agricultural development.

He hailed the cordial relations between Zambia and Malawi and the growing fruitful cooperation between the two countries.

Mr Banda said historically, the friendship and mutual understanding between the two countries had been solid because their relationship was founded on a common cultural and ethnic heritage which brought the citizens of the two countries together.

Zambia valued Professor Wa Mutharika’s acceptance to officiate at the 84th Zambia Agriculture and Commercial Show in Lusaka, whose theme is ‘Sustainable Development’.

He described the show as an important annual event that provided a platform to showcase Zambia’s products and afforded an equal opportunity to foreign participating firms to promote their products on the Zambian market.

Mr Banda said he was pleased to note that a good number of Malawian companies were participating in this year’s show.

He said the attendance of some Malawian enterprises would foster trade relations between the two countries, which had been low despite the existing warm political ties.

He also commended Prof Wa Mutharika for showing commitment and exemplary leadership in steering the African Union (AU)’s vision as the current chairperson.

President Banda is today scheduled to hold official talks with his counterpart at State House.

The two leaders are expected to tour selected stands tomorrow morning before Prof Wa Mutharika officially opens the show in the afternoon.
