Police in Kitwe detaining male and female offenders in the same cells.

Share

Former Freedom Fighters League of Zambia (FFLZ) Secretary General Dickson Kaminda has appealed to Police Officers in Kitwe to stop detaining male and female offenders in the same cells.

Mr. said this in a statement released in Kitwe today. He said he was saddened when he found two males and a female sharing the same cell at night, in Kitwe’s Bulangililo Township’s station.

Mr. Kaminda said the practice is wrong and if continued would dent the image of the police service.

He further said some police stations have a tendency of detaining juveniles and hardcore criminals in the same cells.

Mr. Kaminda added that it is wrong for suspects to be detained for more than 48 hours in police cells, contrary to the laws of Zambia.

He advised relatives of the detained suspects to report such cases to higher authorities.

  1. yah yah yah???????, while thats shows how unprofessional Zambian police service is, and that our government does not care about anything happening in zambia right.

  3. Good thought, but which higher authorities?
I guess you have never slept in a police cell.
The higher authorities know about the conditions in the police cells and the situation in prisons which are inhuman to say the list.
So bwana freedom fighter, your major cause of concern should be to fight against the detaining of juveniles and hardcore criminals in the same prison cells. Have you ever bothered to visit Kamfinsa State Prison or Chimbokaila to see the conditions prevailing?
The prisons in Zambia are not for reformation but a way of training the youth to become hardened criminals on release.
One wonders why the courts should be giving people custodial sentences on petty issues when they can be given community orders to clean up the dirty courts’ surroundings.

  4. Teti mubike imimena ne mbushi pamo muma cells bane, where on earth did this happen before? wat a circus. Anyway pipo responsible in police service should be answerable for treating this people like this.

  5. Its good we have enlightened men like old Dickson Kaminda to make such observations. It appears our friends in ZP dont learn from mistakes other cops have made countrywide. Is this not like the case in Kasama where a pregnant women was detained in cells and gave birth whilst in detention. How on earth does a normal thinking person detain 2 males and 1 female in one cell for that matter overnight. Even in our homes its a taboo to let boys and girls of a certain age share one room unless there is an emergency. May the Copperbelt ZP chief look into this matter and deal sternly with the officers involved. No matter how grave the offence one commits, in law it is assumed one is a suspect and innocent until proven gulity by a lawful court, not kangaro court. Let there be sanity the way we work

  6. I very much sympathise with our police service. Most of these so called cells are make shift containers where an offender can be kept while awaiting to be moved to a police station that has the facilities of cell eg R/side , Mindolo or even Central police station. However ,due to shortage of transport detainees are forced to spend nights at such places. Please increase the number of police vehicles for earsy mobility and crime prevention . Lets look at finding solutions . The corporate world should give a helping hand they also benefits from services of the police . Government can not do evrything on its own . lets learn to give a helping hand and not just being arm chair critics if we want zambian to progress

  7. I can imagine what takes place in the night after lockdown. Are they issued condoms? Kwena ba zambia twalisebana. its actualy abuse of human rights.

  8. My mbuyas abena chipata balafyala utubana twamu ma cells nomba .I can just imagine tandiwe banda meeting shoprite banda in the cells am sure their product could be named cello banda. since history has shown them naming their children like handsome phiri, triangle zulu and moonwalk ngulube.

  9. The question is why are they doing that? Is it because these only 1 cell or maybe its because other cells are not good enough for human occupation or it it just for fan. this article is incomplete

  10. Oh no , what happended to Human rights, its such a shame to hear that such things do happen in our country. Why cant they have a suitable place to keep men and women separate.

  11. # 3 you are spot on…….there are so many people who have gone into prison only to come back into society to really persue a criminal lifestyle.
