The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has approved 32 licences, 16 construction permits and various amendments to licenses valued at K4.5 Billion in a move aimed at enhancing energy service delivery and infrastructure development across the country.
ERB says the approvals cover electricity, petroleum and the renewable energy value chain.
The Board adds that the approvals demonstrate continued investor confidence in Zambia’s energy sector and reflect the effectiveness of the country’s regulatory framework in promoting compliant and sustainable investments.
During a briefing in Lusaka, ERB Public Relations Manager, Namukolo Kasumpa, disclosed that the approvals include major investments in downstream petroleum infrastructure.
Ms Kasumpa stated that the developments will contribute to the expansion of compliant petroleum infrastructure and improve access to petroleum products in various parts of the country.
She indicated that in the renewable energy sector, ERB approved a licence for photovoltaic power generation and authorised the construction of four solar photovoltaic power plants with a combined capacity of 126 megawatts peak.
Ms Kasumpa further highlighted that the projects will support the country’s transition towards sustainable energy systems and contribute to national energy policy objectives.
Meanwhile, ERB Director General, Elijah Sichone, said the growing level of investment interest in the energy sector is a clear indication of increased investor confidence driven by reforms introduced by the government.
He noted that policy and regulatory measures such as the Open Access Framework for electricity and petroleum infrastructure, the Net Metering Framework and the Multi-Year Tariff Framework have created a more predictable and attractive investment environment.
Mr Sichone said the reforms are encouraging private sector participation and unlocking new opportunities across the energy value chain.
He reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to ensuring regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, consumer protection and the long-term sustainability of Zambia’s energy sector through the implementation of the Energy Regulation Act Number 12 of 2019.
