Police in Livingstone have arrested a suspected opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) supporter for allegedly destroying a Patriotic Front (PF) Chitenge material that was being used in the political campaign.

Southern Province Police Commissioner Charity Katanga told ZANIS in Mazabuka yesterday that 32 year old Musuka Kawengo of Libuyu Compound in Livingstone allegedly destroyed a PF Chitenge material last night at Focal Point bar.

She said the material that was alleged to have been destroyed was taken to Libuyu police station and will be used as an exhibit at the courts of law tomorrow when the suspect appears in court.

Meanwhile, unknown people in Livingstone have attacked two lovers that were found having a good time in a car which they parked a few kilometres from the Livingstone weighbridge along the Livingstone-Lusaka road.

Ms. Katanga said two hooligans, armed with sticks and pangas, on Saturday evening around 19:30 hours attacked a 35 year old business man of Railways Compound in Livingstone and his girlfriend aged 48, a Manager at Livingstone Hostel Board.

She said the man, who is believed to be married to another woman, informed the police that the thugs attacked him and his girlfriend and got away with KR3, 200 and their clothes leaving them naked.

She said the attackers also went away with other valuable.

Ms. Katanga disclosed that the man sustained an injury on his left leg following the attack which the two lovers said occurred when they stopped and parked the car along the road to allow the woman to answer the call of nature.

Passers-by that found the couple stranded on the road while naked however assisted them with clothes before going to report the matter at Livingstone Central Police station where the man allegedly refused the police to call his wife to bring him decent clothes.

Katanga however said the police have since launched a manhunt for the attackers saying despite the circumstances that led the lovers to be attacked.

It is hers. She has the right to use it for any purpose. Tearing it is the most appropriate measure one could ever take!

Yes, she was given as a gift, free material, the former PF has a right to throw away even an ugly Chitenge.
Was she arrest just because the Chitenge material had Sata’s face?

I thought flag-burning is enshrined in freedom of expression. Now any other paraphernalia is not exempt from this expression either. I am aware in Zambia we have ascribed importance to all sorts of symbols and this is a practice that MUST come to an end. Expressing oneself in any form that is not physically injurious to others should not be an act attracting arrest at all!

What is your problem? Destroying that cloth is now a criminal case? This is just dictatorship nothing more. Like once Hitler used to kill all people who didn’t want to carry the HAKENKREUZ is this what you are supporting sure come. Police is just too political in Zambia and what a pity, even the helper of the Zambians are political,to whom do Zambians going to run to?
Please international community not again watching until things get worse learn from the past mistakes you did and take action.

Pamela my dear, stop exposing yo ignorance. Tearing or destroying campaign materials is a criminal offence at law. This includes tearing a campaign poster. Stop thinkin with UPNDism and be level headed. There is something wrong wit UPND’s appraoch to politics; arrogance, anger, frustration, bitterness, violence, opportunism are da common attributes associated with UPND. Da party nids to out-grow these

@Theresa I wonder where you got that information that I support any party in Zambia, I don’t have even the right to vote in Zambia. Next thing makes me wonder since when is it wrong to destroy something from the other party, my dear those are normal political games and no one takes them seriously apart from countries with dictatorship minds. TO ME WRONG ACTIONS ARE WRONGS EITHER FROM PF OR UPND I DON’T MIND MY CONCERN IS ABOUT THE FREEDOM OF MY MOTHERLAND ZAMBIA AND ITS CITIZENS NOTHING MORE AM NOT COMING TO EAT YOUR PF-NSHIMA DON’T WORRY MY DEAR :-)

Pretty Boy – my would be question exactly! I know when we were young and a friend tears your shirt while scuffling, your mother would be told, but that would not be reported to the serious police then, but now, the police do not have anything to do, let alone anyone to charge, because they can’t find the criminal, e.g. those undressing the couple in Livingstone (not that I condone immorality). Just goes to show how politicised our police FORCE has beocme.

I wonder when the PF police wing will start going after real criminals and start taking action against drivers who drive under the influence of alcohol. The PF police are so dull that they can’t even see the drunks who get into cars drunk from night clubs and pubs.

What evidence is there that Musuka tore up the PF chitenge? Who witnessed the alleged offence? The chitenge could well have been torn up by the police to implicate Musuka. This is just a set-up to intimidate the opposition.

THE PF SHOULD CONTINUE WINNING ALL THE BYE ELECTIONS. THEN THE OPPOSITION WILL BE TAUGHT A LESSON. THEN THE OPPOSITION WILL LEARN THAT ZAMBIANS ARE ACTUALLY NOT INTERESTED IN THEM. MABE, JUST MAYBE THEY WILL LEARN TO BECOME SERIOUS AND START DISCUSSING IMPORTANT MATTERS OF NATIONAL BUILDING.
