The Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has unanimously adopted MMD President Dr Nevers Sekwila Mumba as its candidate for the upcoming presidential by-election. After a lengthy meeting that started in the late afternoon on Sunday the 16th of November 2014 and ended almost at midnight, the MMD National Executive Committee (NEC) resolved that Dr Mumba was the duly elected MMD president and as such is the automatic candidate for any presidential election.

The NEC had met to consider this matter among other items that included the MMD’s participation in the upcoming by-election, resource mobilization and the possibility of making alliances with other opposition political parties. The NEC has given a full mandate to the president to investigate possible election alliances and to consider what role former president Rupiah Banda would be best suited for in the run up to the by-election.

The MMD constitution does not provide for another election during the time there is a sitting president, nor does it allow the NEC to overturn the decision of the MMD National Convention which was last held in May 2012 and saw Dr Mumba elected by 70% of the vote in the second round of an election that used the 50%+1 system.

    • The people who live abroad who’s interest is just the new constitution so that they can get Dual Citizenship will be shocked when a PF candidate wins the presidency. I was in Zambia last week after being away from home for 4 years.PF has done a lot in the past 3 years and their work will be on thier side on Election Day.

    • Opposition be warned that there has been little structural changes to the national voting map post 2011 election. It will be naive to be live otherwise because PF has not lost much on its support base. If anything, they have gained support. Most certainly the opposition has neither gained much to alter the electoral outcome. If PF can resolve its current chaos and reground fast, they could realign and rebound all the way into a thin but constitutional mandate to finish their 5 year mandate of late President Sata. Though the opposition has a larger stack to win on, their defeat of PF in such a short run is only certain if they can consolidate as a united front on the ballot. Anything short of a Grand opposition entry in this bye-election will leave a damaging mark beyond 2016.

    • It will be naive to believe that the death of President Sata is a nail in the coffin of PF or indeed to think that they have but lost it all in this election. Truth be told that though they have not grown exponentially fast as a new ruling party should, they have significantly gained some support credible enough to build victory on. Within the 3 years they have left a mark of infrastructure across the nation too dangerous to ignore Not saying that PF is insulated from defeat. Tramping them clean requires more than good English and political economy theories. It require simplicity, detail, issues, vision, capacity and a functional campaign machinery that can prove a comparative values to convert based on values. The worst enemy of the opposition undeniably is fragmentation.

    • We need a younger President. We had UNIP, MMD and PF. If PF loses, let us have UPND. The problem with PF is its scorn on good governance.

    • Ala B-The hypocrit. He pretended all along that he may not stand, but just wanted to ambush Dr Mumba.Indeed Dr Mumba,God fights all the battles for you.Infact there’s info.that ala B,had gone to Malawi to consult witches.Shameless old Ala B.

    • I thought Mr Rupiah Bwezani Banda, had some Morals.Surely,he left MMD in a mess. After Nevers has cleaned up this mess, that’s when Rupiah shows up to just bring unnecessary confusion and strife with his minions.Rupiah remained dead silent on the:Deregistration of the Party,Traitor Kachingwe issue,Team Kaingu issue,The nullifications of seats of his MPs accused of corruption,Left a bad corruption tag of MMD.After Nevers has handled all these negatives, then Rupiah shows-up to un seat Dr Mumba.Honestly, what type of species is Rupiah? Those who can support him are just sick in the head.

  1. Shame on you chi Ruphia Banda.
You always wait for the presidents to die to ascend into state house.
You never pay any price for anything.
Not this time around. Twakusula chapwa.

    Viva Nevers Mumba

    • What hurts you ‘anti-RB’ guys the most is that the man is ALWAYS smiling and in VERY high spirits.

I think that’s a rare positive trait and though I’d rather he remains retired, I personaly love the aura he emmits.

      Thanks

    • @ senior Citizen with due respect the situation on the ground shows that PF still has stractures but its structures are shaking. There is no unity in PF.i strongly doubt PF will get the votes they got in 2011,especially in western and North western.UPND structures are intact and they stand to gain from the structures left by MMD in its former strongholds like Western province,North western,Central ,Parts of Copperbelt and Lusaka.Southern province will give UPND a much higher percentage votes than 2011.There is no need for an alliance with chancers HH is the man period.Let Mutati form his own party if he is popular.Sata won without any alliance in 2011.We in UPND have less time for allainces an less those who wish to join because we have less time to campaign and convince Zambians .

    • @Sido mark
Sata was PF,,, and PF was Sata,, those structures you are seeing on the
ground were Sata who is now dead,,, therefore those structures are also dead and burried,, just look at the power struggle, after the dust settles, PF will be in pieces as Sata rests in peace

    • Nevers Mumba is smoking too much chambaaaa these days; these MMD buggers can suck my cork left to right and stuff some creamy garlic cream along with some sausages through my bottom then hammer it off like savages attack a piece of nice shiny black bottom; evans mfula at evaduco reporting live from lusaka fish market

  2. I was just about to write scathingly about the decor in State house. Then I went back and read the caption, it’s the stadium. However, I will still write because I can’t stem the flow once it starts:

That carpet looks like what you see on the floor after eating nsima with mushrooms that your husband’s concubine prepared for you. That sofa looks exactly like the one Welenski allowed the natives to sit on when he needed to convince them of his ownership of everything they thought was theirs. That glass of water looks like it’s ready to be used in a baptism by TB Joshua. That lady in green looks like she is ready for the next level – to be cast as cinderella in a hollywood movie with Denzel Washington as her prince……

    • @Kavumba

So this was a serious issue for you, I hope you’ve since found out it isn’t true! Discussing the decor proved a better way to spend my time.

In other words (I’m typing slowly for your benefit), by not discussing the story and instead discussing the decor I’m saying “This is a rubbish story and doesn’t deserve comment”.

    • @Mj-MMD had convention in 2012 and elected Dr Mumba with 70% after a ‘re run. He beat Mr Mutati in the ‘re run. Pf goes for convention for the second time but it’s the first time the presidency will have challengers. I bet multiple parties will be formed after their GC

    • @D, stop talking about history. That happened in 2012, why can’t they level the playing field? Let all political parties go for a convention each. All those from opposition concentrate on your parties and leave Edgar alone. Can u tell me which convention chose Hakaivotela Humwine HH?

  3. MMD stands for Make Mumba Deliver…and by this party adopting his candidacy we’re almost there.

Yes,he will deliver to Zambia unlike that kantemba party of thugs.

  4. Exactly the same thing will happen in PF.MMD MP’s who have supporters in their constituencies voted for RB while NEC members who are mostly lusaka based voted for NEVERS,this marks the end of MMD mark my word. In the same vein PF MP’s have voted for edgar lungu but the general conference will vote for someone else. For UPND,concentrate your campaigns in eastern, lusaka and copperbelt provinces. Just these provinces will make you win the elections, try to work with the MMD MP’s who never voted for NEVERS in eastern province where HH is highly respected

  5. I’m begining to warm up to the idea of fielding a sole candidate for the opposition and I totally agree with what Senior Citizen has said. A fragmented opposition based on the 2011 voters roll can’t win this election even if PF field a Frog.

Floating RB is not a bad idea. He can just run for 1 year and fix a number of issue that Felix Mutati raised yesterday and besides if he wins now , he wont be eleigible for 2016 and that should now open up the field for all so called Young president to slug it out under a new constititution.

    It is just an idea.

    • Trouble is RB is damaged goods – was just joke; he had a chance to set himself up nicely but too rigid and can’t listen. What has changed? His foolishness got us Sata and his panga wielding militias. He had ALL the time to fix the constitution, get rid of this stupid public order act but instead started on ZICTA, FTJ forgiving nonsense: NO NO NO and I hope the people have not forgotten.

  6. 20 YEARS of MMD rule brought about the worst misery Zambians have ever experienced. MMD will perish like UNIP.

MMD only genuinely won the 1991 elections. In 1996, there was so much apathy.
In 2001, Mazoka won the elections.
In 2006, Sata won the elections.
In 2008, RB got it via a sympathy vote after Mwanawasa’s death.

    Never take Zambians for granted.

  7. My view is that RB should remain in retirement. He lost an election and is therefore responsible for the MMD being out of government. The Party has been led by Nevers Mumba during its most difficult time and it is unfair for RB to replace Mumba at this time. If RB loses again that will be the end of MMD as RB will go back into retirement for the second time.

  8. To summaries it all, Zambia lacks a credible leader to take the country to another level. Zambia’s best years were under the Late Mwanawasa & RB, economically we were strong & investors, genuine ones were flowing with $’s, how times have changed.

  9. All the praises for PF are misplaced, governance have been very bad, cost of living have sky rocketed, dirtiness is so high, vendors are every where like you know what, very big cabinet, tribal appointments. I can asure you we have not forgotten and the day of reckoning is coming. The only score for PF I acknowledge was on roads which they need to finish. the pride of Zambian citizenry is gone. please let us learn our lesson.
we need a government that will protect Zambians, protect and account for our resources, set priorities right and care for the poor. we need a leader and not to be ruled by cadres in the streets no.

  10. Way to go MMD. VIVA Nevers and team. Now Nevers instant start working towards goal post and aim straight. Envision how you now make use of RB as father consultant. Embrace him now with due respect as buffer for wisdom as well as all old people you can receive help from politically. Identify YOUNG AND VIBRANT YOUNG MEN as your foot soldiers not of violence but peaceful campaigners. Please give no room to violence nor character assassination to others. We are watching your steps. All the best and God bless your undertakings.

  11. Thank you MMD, at least you stopped thinking with emotions. Like him or not he was elected democratically by 70% beating Mutati. RB abandoned MMD and the nation. If he wants to be seen as a diplomat he is said to be – he should unite his team to support Mumba. I know that Mumba will be better than anyone standing on PF ticket because they will be controlled by the cartels or cliques. There are only two people to choose from HH or Mumba. The rest will be spoilers.

The electorates now have two candidates from the big parties UPND and MMD. We are still waiting for who PF will vote for.

  12. Ignore Senior Citizen at own peril. There is a lot of sense in what he has said not to mention the fact that if Edgar Lungu goes through in PF, you are looking at PF coming out with 6 provinces as strong holds. These 6 provinces account for over 65% of registered voters. These are facts for all of you to see. Stop insults like HH has rightly advised. Lets look at these issues analytically and soberly. Consult the voters register if in doubt and you will see why MMD lost in 2011.

  13. You haters and those on the payroll of the cartel, please show us where or quote what RB said about taking over from Dr Mumba.
Now that MMD NEC has adopted Dr Mumba, let all genuine supporters rally behind the choice and mobilize other Zambians. This is not about Dr Mumba but about Zambia being restored to democracy.
The Post today “teaches” us virtues of truth and condemns liars. Where were they when PF and its leaders were obtaining power by lies and all manner of misrepresentation and falsehoods? In fact the Post gave prominence to these lies without blinking an eye. The PF never kept any of their campaign promises of 90 days, barotseland, lower fuel and unga prices etc preferring instead to shamelessly hijack MMD plans for development and claim credit all the way Embassy Park.

  14. Yes let us all rally behind MMD. This appeal is to UPND supporters and all opposition, it’s the only way to kick out PF and give ourselves time to sort out the constitution before the 2016 elections. we know that because the lies are buried six feet, PF will lose western, northwestern and all the swing voters who brought them to power in 2011, remember that they won the presidency with a minority and can therefore be kicked out if MMD receives sufficient votes from the swing provinces. You have been warned don’t waste your vote, just for this one fellow voters. 2016 will be open to all and it’s ONLY two years guys.

  15. That said well and done but victory is far fetched for MMD and Nevers Mumba in this presidential by election and the 2016 one.
A number of issues remain out standing as a prerequisite for success in any election by MMD.
1- MMD president Nevers Mumba is not wholly accepted within MMD NEC members and Mumba has done little to resolve issues within the party. Mumba has even worsened the situation by not being consultative enough and transparent in certain issues, eg; disclosure of financial resources for the party.
2- Mumba has adopted a rigid altitude and mind set over senior MMD NEC members (agree to differ than fire them as Guy Sott did on E. Lungu) Chituwo, Kaingu, Dora and Namugala have constituencies backing them, Mumba can not have votes from them easily. Mumba is on shaky ground.

  16. Now, I have questions to all you contributors to the debates. Please answer my question and spare me the trifling and waffling, I shall appreciate.
#1. What does the constitution say with regard to the term of office of a president who takes over after the demise of his/her predecessor?
#2) Does whoever wins in January have to rule only up to 2016 or does he/she rule for 5 years and why?
I am asking these questions because I do not believe that whoever wins, will be completing late Mr MCS’s term of 5 years but somewhat has to start a new 5 year cycle.
If this is the case, then we need to vote VERY carefully lest we be stuck for another 5 years with a lousy politricktian.

    • @ Warload, The answer is that the President elected will only rule upto the next general elections that is in 2016. If only you lived in Zambia you could have known that when we lost President Mwanawasa, we had By-elections and President Rupia Banda took over from 2008 to 2011.

  17. I hope Dr Mumba will not disappoint us again. he has this habit of ditching the party when things get tough. but wait a minute the ” BLUES” Again? Aaah NO,NO,NO,NO.

  18. Justice has been served. Only Nevers Mumba stood up to the late Sata because he is clean. There are reports that even Sata knew that Nevers will one day become President and he apparently used to phone the MMD leader, sometimes to intimidate him(Nevers would not be intimidated) and sometimes it is reported that late Sata would phone like one who had a premonition Nevers would be President after him! Some MMD MPs have proved pathetic. When Sata was around, none of them could raise a finger against him. It was all left to Nevers to take on Sata boldly. Some MMD MPs could not take on Sata because the late President had a dossier on them and they were afraid he would spill the beans and expose their scandals and corruption when they were Ministers in government. That is how they were silenced.

  19. Genuine members of MMD will be seen in how they support Nevers now. I think it would not make sense you claim or see yourself as competent member of a particular grouping but stand a distance in a sense of withdrawal from assisting the group. It is normal to be chided or punished in any organization but that should not breed evil in that grouping but must be seen as a tool for reflection for change of attitude. Where there is a leader, it is important to limit one self and be useful to the cause than adopt a stand that may be destructive. People in the gallery may only be entertained by that grouping tangle but the real losers are the people in the tangle . Can all good thinkers of democracy stand and support Nevers in this case to compete with others in the race.

  20. Among the strengths of MMD are the following: (1) most, if not the only, democratic party in Zambia; (2) not being centred on one person (how I hate this). My question is: what are they promising?

  21. Give Nevers chance. Let him for the first time in life score the second position in presidential elections. PF has become embedded to the first position in presidential and general elections. UPND and HH have bought a permanent peripheral seat in such elections.

  22. MUTATI IS A SHAMEFUL MMD MEMBER. HE DOES NOT KNOW WHA MMD STANDS FOR.

IF HE WANTS TO JOIN UPND, LET HIM GO. HE IS A DESPERATE MAN AND HAS NEVER RECOVERED FROM LOSING TO NEVERS.

WHEN THE TEA PARTY OF THE US REPUBLICAN PARTY FAILED TO REMOVE BARACK OBAMA IN 2010′ THEY SAID ALL STATES THAT HAD VOTED FOR MITT ROMNEY (R), SHOULD BREAK AWAY TO FORM THEIR OWN COUNTRY.

THE US SUPREME COURT’S SIMPLE ANSWER WAS, THERE IS NO SUCH PROVISION IN THE US CONSTITUION.

AFRICA MUST MATURE TO RESPECTING CONSTITUTIONS. UPND HAS NO RULES AND FOLLOW NO CONSTITUTION.

MMD IS FOLLOWING ITS CONSTITUTION.NEVERS THIS IS YOUR HOUR OF RECKONING. DON’T BUCKLE IN THIS HOUR OF EXTREME TESTING. IT’S TOO LATE FOR ALA BEE.

  23. Congratulations to Dr Nervers Mumba for endorsement as MMD Presidential candidate.

If by any chance the MMD bounces back to power, that would be great because of many reasons of which I will cite one. The MMD have learnt from their myriad grave mistakes that sent the nation’s intelligentsia into diaspora in war time style – literally fleeing poverty and unemployment. Thanks to State Counsel Levy Patrick Mwanawasa who restored growth and stability which was maintained by RB to a large extent.

Having been in opposition for the past three years, the MMD must have gone through a lot of schooling. We can hope that the new MMD would save Zambia from itself to release the growth potential from which we have been shying away since independence. Sata did a commendable and enviable job.

  24. I nearly shaded tears when I heard that mmd have resolved to adopt RB as their presidential candidate,I was even about to burn my voters card cos it would have been of use .Dr Nevers Mumba is the only way to go. Surely the one who is on ur side is greater than they that are against you
Zambia shall be saved because it belongs unto the Lord Al might. Viva nevers & viva mmd,way to go.

  25. LT was long suspected to be a PF mouth piece for disseminating news that is half truth to distort facts and favor its sponsors.
LT published news on selection of MMD Nevers Mumba alleged made by MMD NEC. This has turned out to be false and the Secretary General of MMD Muhabi Lungu has clearly stated it to nave been a malicious article meant to detract public attention from the truth of the position about MMD presidential selection process as it currently stands.
LT should apologize for misinforming the nation on such an important matter the nation is keenly following.

  26. We can have RB for President touring the world and stuffing his family’s accounts with tax payers’ money again. He was exposed as a corrupt man with his son on the run because he has so much to hide. Why do we have such short memories?
