Workers’ union say formation of Salaries Commission a waste of money

Share

The Zambia Congress of Trade Union, ZCTU, and the Civil Servants and Allied Workers Union of Zambia, CSWUZ, say the formation of a Wages and Salaries Commission for public service workers is a drain on tax payers’ money.

The workers’ unions said the Commission will make insignificant impact in addressing the problem of low wages and salaries for public service workers.

Speaking in separate interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today ZCTU General Secretary, Roy Mwaba, said the formation of Commission will only duplicate the work of the labour movement and is a waste of tax payers money.[quote]

Mr. Mwaba said though the formation of the Commission is welcome, it will not achieve positive results as regards efforts of bettering the wages and salaries for public service workers.

He said commissions in the country have previously failed to meet the people’s expectations adding that this one is not going to be an exceptional.

“We have the teaching service commission, public service commission and many such commissions but what have they done? All the President would have done is to strengthen these already existing commissions” said Mr. Mwaba.

He expressed hope that the commission will not interfere in the unions collective barging with government but strengthen it.

And CSWUZ Vice President, Beatrice Nyirongo, said the commission will be a huge cost to government as people on the commission will need to be paid allowances.

Mrs. Nyirongo has, however, welcomed its formation adding that it should look at the cry of the civil servants in the country.

She said the commission should ensure that interests of workers are put first and everything that the workers are demanding is addressed.

Meanwhile, Zambia National Teachers Union (ZNUT) Secretary General, Newman Lubala, said the formation of the commission should be expedited to help deal with many problems faced by public service workers.

Yesterday President Rupiah Banda announced that he will constitute a salaries and wages commission to look into the structures of wages and salaries for public service workers. He also appointed Copperbelt University Lecturer, Professor Muyunnda Mwanalushi as its chairman.

  1. it is a waste of money, let that money go to the nurses. no wonder monkeys are upset too. i hope they have been to the vet.knowing RB….im worried.

  2. More money for an exercise which can be done by Public Service Commission. Whats with setting up commissions every week, we will soon hear of the Commission on why the monkey urinated on Rupiah Banda

  3. Of course it’s a waste of resources. These small commissions are of little use as you will come to realize. After many sittings the commission headed by Muyunda Mwanalushi will still back the original salaries proposed by government, why not back them now you id!ots?

  4. Well “He said commissions in the country have previously failed to meet the people’s expectations adding that this one is not going to be an exceptional” is a good summary as Indabas and other commisions that have been cited have been total money wasting ventures which only benefit a few characters who also like the status quo.

Anyhow, let us Zambians give President RB Banda a chance to decampaign the MMD so that the work for the UPND-PF PACT will be very simple in the 2011 elections time.

Have a blessed day you all and take careful care.

  5. My proposal about civil servants’ salaries and allowances is that let GRZ study the wages being given to government workers in Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa including Zimbabwe.

The results must be that Zambia has to harmonise the pay so that Zambian trained people will be motivated to stay and work at home.

  6. This is a good development. My first thumbs up to RP. However, as long as this is not another white elephant. The formation of this commission would keep salaries in line with the inflation rate. This has worked in the developed world and that is why they strike less. ZCTU is toothless, I strongly feel ZCTU leadership is on the politician’s payroll.

  7. In Zambia we do the opposite the BIG MAN (Zambia) was addressing us that his PIG will take certain drastic measures to curb expenditure braaaa braaaa braaa but setting up a commission to look into worsening the salaries and conditions of service sfor public workers is not doing the opposite. Unless the ladies and gentlemen who are going to be commissioners will be volunteers otherwise another K50 Billion down the drain. W hat is the thinking of our leaders, do workers need commissions to sort out plight. RB said the experts are in the Ministries then let experts from Labour Dept. Finance & Management Division comprise the team and will be working normally sorting out the mess. Otherwise the commission will be set up and be filled with the same grey heads who never get tired.

  8. Some times I miss the Nothern Rhodesian Govt. These people the only problem they had was that they did not want to mix with us. But if you talk of development our GRZ is 1million miles behind. I will talk about the CB. Each town had 1st Class all purpose stadium. By this I mean that these grounds included: soccer, running truck, swimming pool etc. In addition they built satelite clubs and ultra modern cinema halls in all townships. Then most important they supplied the community with health facilities such as clinics in all townships. This was in addition main hospitals. They built primary schools for section of the town; these accompanied by teachers house. The schools gave free text and excercise books. All roads were tarred and paved. Houses were built to suit family sizes.

  9. 12 Continued. They ecouraged employees and their families to visit their villages of origin. They also encouraged those who had nothing to do in towns to stay in the village although this was done in the most cruel manner of ichipekeni(Corruption of Inspection). All the same this ensured that shanties and unplanned settlements were non existent. This arrangement gave some form of development in the villages and controlled unemployment. Fishing was controlled so efficiently that there never was a thought that one day rivers would ever be depleted atall. BOTTOM LINE IS IF THE WHITE MAN COULD DO THIS WHY ARE FAILING TO LOOK AFTER OUR OWN PEOPLE. PEOPLE WHO VOT FOR US BECOME USELESS AS SOON AS WE ASSUME POLITICAL POWER. DOES IT MEAN WE ARE CURSED AS A BLACK RACE?
