The conversion of five health centres in Lusaka district into fully fledged hospitals has reached an advanced stage.
Ministry of Health Spokesperson, Kamoto Mbewe, disclosed that construction works on the health facilities were progressing well and would be completed on time.
Dr. Mbewe said Meanwood, a local company construction the health facilities, was working hard to ensure that works were completed in the stipulated time frame.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka today, Dr Mbewe said the upgrading of the theatres and the caesarian sections at the five health centres could be completed in the next five months.
Dr, Mbewe said once the five health centres are fully transformed into general hospitals, they would help ease the congestion at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) and would also enable government to take health services nearer to the people.
He also said the health centres that that would not be upgraded would be referring patients to the new hospitals instead of sending all of them to the UTH.
Dr Mbewe explained that the transformation of the health centres into hospitals calls for the improvement of human resources to work in the new hospitals.
The Ministry of Health spokesperson further said the ministry has since made arrangements to set up a team of consultants to go round these hospitals to offer consultancy services.
The Ministry of Health has embarked on a programme to upgrade Chawama, Chilenje, Chipata, Matero and Kanyama clinics into general hospitals in a bid to decongest the UTH.

Are these really going to be hospitals, or something between a hospital and a clinic?
Some how I feel you cant just upgrade a clinic into a hospital. I could be wrong.
Please just build new hospitals.
I think this is a huge step toward developing a nation,coz a healthy nation is a productive one,so as a health personnel i personally welcome this move and i hope these hospitals will be stocked with state of the art equipment and specialist doctors so as to help build confidence from it’s patients.also some countries grade their hospitals into 3 grades for instance which helps facilitate competion between them and keeps the standards high.
having been there and worked at some of them i feel this is a welcome move. lets also remember to motivate everyone working there

i Can only believe it if I see what improvements have be done to the clinics. I hope its Dr Mbewe and his crew will not just change the name from Clinic to Hospital they should provide all the necessary equipments to the clinics. It would be better if they could just build new hospitals and leave those clinics as they are. What development has MMD done after KK’s govt?? Its seems all the leaders after KK did nothing as far as developing our Health and Eduction systems are concerned. SHAME ON THEM…
