Male circumcision on demand in Lufwanyama

Share

A youth activist in Lufwanyama has appealed to government through the Ministry of Health to conduct a mobile male circumcision programme in the district to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Kitwe, Fairchild Fundanga said there is a high demand for male circumcision among the youths who have been enlightened that the operation reduces the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Mr Fundanga said the youths are currently turning to traditional circumcision methods in their efforts to protect themselves from the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

He noted that the traditional circumcision methods being used were posing a health risk including HIV/AIDS infection due to the use of unsterilized equipment.

Mr Fundanga appealed to government to intervene and provide safer circumcision operations in the district.

He noted that there was also need to educate traditional circumcision experts in rural areas on how to sterilize their equipment.

Male circumcision has been approved to be effective in reducing chances of contracting HIV/AIDS and most Zambian men are slowly accepting the operation in a bid to protect themselves from the pandemic.

  1. Have all research results been sufficient now, about the effectiveness of male circumcision being able to prevent transmission of the disease that is taking our politicians?

  2. #2Variety, scientists do not say circumcision prevents transmission, but that it considerably reduces the risk up to as low as 30%. So if you dive into a freak from the Red Light district without a rubber on your willy, there’s stll a good chance that you’ll get burned!

  3. Circumcision is a dangerous distraction in the fight against AIDS.  There are six African countries where men are MORE likely to be HIV+ if they’ve been circumcised: Cameroon, Ghana, Lesotho, Malawi, Rwanda, and Swaziland.  Eg in Malawi, the HIV rate is 13.2% among circumcised men, but only 9.5% among intact men.  In Rwanda, the HIV rate is 3.5% among circumcised men, but only 2.1% among intact men.  If circumcision really worked against AIDS, this just wouldn’t happen.  We now have people calling circumcision a “vaccine” or “invisible condom”, and viewing circumcision as an alternative to condoms.

ABC (Abstinence, Being faithful, Condoms) is the way forward.  Promoting genital surgery will cost African lives, not save them.

  4. This issue is very senstive. We must be very carefull when dealing with it. We should not mishand it in the manner Zuma did with a shower.

  5. Compared to circumcising, condoms are shown to be 95 times as cost-effective at thwarting HIV. African AIDS researchers announced in August that the HIV+ men they circumcised were 50% MORE likely to infect their partners than the HIV+ men they left intact were. Most of the US men who have died of AIDS were circumcised at birth. Circumcision does not prevent AIDS.

  6. If the demand is high then Government should ask some of the local butcheries to assist the for a certain period, the should proved the butch with plaster and first add kits.

  7. people are now made to believe that once you are circumcised you cannot contract H.I.V and this has led them to sleep with women without using protection… this has contributed to the rise in the cases of H.I.V infections. Why can’t those who are going for circumcision be tested for H.I.V before being circumcised…if they know their status they will make better decisions…

  8. Circumcision is good especially when it comes to sexual satisfaction. One takes abit of time to release making sexual partners more proud and satisfied unlike the ones with covers on the ntwenu. A real lozi woman would no to uncircumcised men pantu balasunda bwangu.

  9. Correct information about circumcision and AIDS should be given to people before they go wild cutting their fore- skins. There is a wrong perception that circumcision can prevent AIDS, as a result many youths engage themselves in unprotected sex.

  10. Iam happy with my fore skin and my g.f. To hell with circumcision…..people before you go to be cut read advantages and disadvantages of chopping the loose extension.

  11. even in the bible it was written those wo were nt circumcised were considered 2b unclean.ya in reduces the risk of contracting hiv/aids bt we dnt nid 2 take chances even thou u’r circumcised.a circumcised man gives his sexual partner good satisfaction than uncircumcised man…total 90 ba tata.

  12. Can’t agree more with #4. Infact now we probably have male adults getting circumcized in order to “go in the field and prove their mantle”. There are sectionz of society who won’t touch pork becauze of what the Bible sayz about pigz. So careful how the reference iz made to the Holy Bible with regard to circumcizion and HIV.

  13. I believe circumscion is NOT, should NOT and will NOT stop the spread of HIV. ABC can help reduce the prevalence of the virus. People should be courageou enough to know there HIV status & maintain it whether they are + or – without have to spread it. Research has shown that PERSITANT exposure to HIV through UNPROTECTED sex when you don’t know the status of the one you are having intercourse with is going to get you to contract HIV. I am circumcised and certainly did not do it because I believe I wont get HIV. I did it for personal hygiene & traditional reasons NOT as a cure or prevention for HIV or STI for that matter. I don’t even use it as a sexual advantage tool as some bloggers may have suggested. It is purely a hygiene reason for me.

  14. In Zambia in 2007, according to the National Demographic and Health Surveys, the HIV rate was 13% among circumcised men and 15% among non-circumcised men, so clearly circumcision is not dramatically protective there – if at all. Meanwhile 3.5% of men who said they had never had sex had HIV, so preventing non-sexual transmission – especially through contaminated injections – would do more good than circumcision.

Those who rely on the Bible should check Gal 5:2 “…if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing.”

  15. Getting circumsized leads to cancer in the end as you take long to release. As you grow old, you regret being circumsised as your ntwenu will not be very sensitive and will not “stand up to attention” Yes, for women, its an advantage but for a man, it becomes punishment in old age. When circumsized, you should still wear a condom during sex but chances are that it will tear up as a result of the “ntwenu” which is like a stick, I mean too hard.
