UPND tips govt. on steps to development

Share

The opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) has implored government to step up its efforts which are aimed at alleviating poverty among Zambians in 2009.

UPND chairman for information and publicity, Charles Kakoma told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka that Zambians had been challenged with a lot of hardships during the year 2008, hence the need for government to cushion their sufferings by easing the impact of poverty in their lives.

Mr. Kakoma said government should devote most of its efforts towards poverty reduction, lowering of inflation rates and exchange rates, increasing employment opportunities and gross domestic product (GDP) growth.

He observed that although there were job losses in the mining industry, Zambia still had a window of hope especially in the agriculture sector.

Mr. Kakoma, who is also Member of Parliament for Zambezi East, expressed optimism that Zambia could still thrive amidst global economic meltdown.

He said the country could prevail over the world’s economic crisis through seizing every opportunity in the agriculture sector at both subsistence and commercial levels.

He pointed out that even in the face of the world’s economic crunch, Zambians still has a lot of sectors that could redeem her from challenges of poverty.

Mr. Kakoma cited the rural economic potential and small scale agricultural activities as some of the areas which could be effectives in developing the country’s economic base.

The MP explained that Zambia had a good rain pattern and a favourable dry weather that could support agricultural activities all year round.

And Mr. Kakoma has, on behalf of the UPND, wished Zambians a prosperous 2009 and urged them to work hard for their individual development, which would subsequently promote national development.

Recently, Zambia experienced among other economic challenges, a rise in food prices, job losses in the mines which closed due to plummeting copper prices on the world market. The country also experienced high exchange rates against the United States dollar and other foreign currencies.

  1. African leaders do not listen to the opposition. Busy on holiday with children “older” than the wife :d

    Ho Ho Ho!

  2. Well said Mr Kakoma. But what is annoying is villagers used to have more tha eneough maize years back. They do not any more. In the mean time, rain is still the same. They have the same land (barring fertiliser).
    Ho Ho Ho

  3. “I write this letter with deep regret on the behaviour of our current President. I’m one
of the few Zambians who voted for Rupiah for the sake of continuity and I feel deeply cheated. Less than three months of Rupiah being in office, that is if he even sits in his office, he goes on a 10 day break when the country is going through a critical situation.

Thousands of Zambians have lost their jobs, mines are cutting down on labour and others are closing.

This is the time for a serious-minded president to cancel all his holiday trips and look at the welfare of Zambians who cannot afford the holidays he is taking his family on.” POST.

  4. THEY WON’T LISTEN TO YOU. YOU NEED TO CONTINUE TALKING AND TALKING. EVEN IN PRAYER, YOU MUST CONTINUE PRAYING UNTIL GOD ANSWERS YOUR PRAYERS. UPND………YOU HAVE A TENDANCY OF KEEPING QUIET FOR TOO LONG.

YOUR ADVICE IS GOOD, BUT YOU’RE A NO SHOW IN 2011

  5. #5 Our presidet is an i d i o t. But then again he is an African so you can`t blame him.

This trip should have been kept quiet. But as alwyas because Africans always want to be in the lime light, he choses to send for the cameras. What a scumbag!

  6. Poor Bob Sichinga, suggesting another Task Force to tackle the global economic meltdown? The task force should have started in RB’s head before he decided to take his Nenanic/Leahnic Clan to Mfuwe. Zambians would be better off without such a task force.

  7. I habven’t seen any tips actually mentioned in the report. All I’ve seen are the following desirable outcomes which have already been stated by our clueless government;
    -poverty reduction,
-lowering of inflation rates and exchange rates,
    -increasing employment opportunities and
    -gross domestic product (GDP) growth.

I was hoping they would mention actual steps that could be taken to achieve the said objectives. Nothing new here but nice try anyway.

  8. I don’t think the RB & crews mind can comprehend the past and the future. They are both just illusions that can manipulate you into thinking theres some kind of change.Bufi

  9. Well done UPND. Keep talking even some people are sleeping and cant hear you. Zambian are listening. Better than those agitating for solution less ACTIONS. [-(

  10. Well done UPND. Keep talking even if some people are sleeping and cant hear you. Zambians are listening. Better than those agitating for solution-less ACTIONS [-(

  11. Zambians and oppositions for that matter have to abandon this attitude of expecting the government alone to solve all the problems. Just get on with the farming, fishing & other developmental activities and the gov’t will endorse.

  12. #10 It doesn`t gives tips but “tips govt. on steps to development” which like you rightly said we already know about.

Stop being a big time Charlie! :d

  13. #10 It doesn`t say gives tips but “tips govt. on steps to development” which like you rightly said we already know about.

Stop being a big time Charlie!

  14. Nine Chale Happy Christmas.

I knw we have agreed on a lot of things but sorry not on this point you just put across.

A government is there to deliver. It is there to decide which way a country goes. People are at their mercy. There are benefits in the UK. If government decided today to rid of those benefits, there is little or nothing the people can do.

Bush managed to convience his government to go to war and despite the protests from people America went to war.

I am afraid our government has decided to go on holiday because they have worked hard the last how many days?:d

    Ho Ho Ho

  15. Dear bloggers i want differ with the issue of opposition providing solutions to the government.
1.why should someone be told how to run government when during campaigns he boosted of being an economical manager?
2.He is being paid for running the government and not being on christmas why should opposition start telling to help with solutions when he said he was the best.
3.Opposition can only come in if whatever he planned for has failed to work. Therefore let his govermrnt provide frame work and put things straight then others can help later. Is this president serious? What has he done to deserve going on holiday with the clan at our expense.shame to all who voted for him.

  16. MMD is a `serve yourself` govt which only temporarily listen to good advice during an election campaign.just imagine the likes of `dirt mouthed`teta managing a very important ministry,it means we are in deep crisis.they will only listen to someone who gives advice on how to manipulate villagers.MAY MMD AND ITS GOVT BURN IN HELL FOR EVER AND EVER.

  17. May I say MHSRIP to levy because we never used to see the whole village going to mfuwe for the holiday. RB’s going to mfuwe is wasteful and a total nonsense and who ever is advising him is a nut to say the least. 1.RB has not done anything to go on holiday.Job losses are looming, mealie meal price are still up and the economy is passing through difficult times. We need this president to follow matters closely before we sink or may be we have sunk.Telling people that he can now rest after fuel prices have dropped internationally and mealie meal have dropped is not something you can celebrate over,

  18. #23 I do not support MMD let alone our dozzy president but we have to be their all the times. It`s our country and if we leave it in the hands of this holiday crazy government, your children and mine are the ones to suffer.

This reminds me of KK. Working holidays at Kasaba any one?

But yeah that`s why in the UK you get this shadow minister thing. A very good idea I think.
First over the line is another aspect we should consider. If we had it in place Mr Banda would have been wasting money donating sugar, ifitenge to people only for a vote.

  19. cont’d
because these are temporal and believe you me january will be different. This man is insincere,he has no morals. We are not kids to be told like this. 2.Im disappointed to see a picture of his relatives going to mfuwe at the expense of our money. His sons and grand children are not entintled to go there at our expense. The law allows children below the age of 21 and not the way we have seen today in your paper(post).Levy knew it better because at no time did he leave for a holiday with all his relatives.Grand children are not entiltled too, even if you are chief executive at some company you can not be allowed to do that, only children who are below 21 please.

  20. cont’d.Im disappointed to see a picture of his relatives going to mfuwe at the expense of our money.

  21. Wow! UPND, its a good thing u have accepted defeat and decided to move on. I think its abt tym pipo learnt to recognise the potential of others even if they r not in the same party. U c 4 us analysts, its hard to join politics coz the many pipo oredi there r bootlickers and we r jes not redi to compromise principles so we jes stand in the sides and watch. I wish politics were on professional basis then mayb, jes mayb the thinkers wud come in and offer help. Our local farmers too have been spoilt by the likes of CARE, WFP and all these shady donors who want to pretend to b giving relief, it has made the villagers lazy as they jes await relief.

  22. nyama soya is useless today copper prices have reduced further the man is busy enjoying and distributing gifts to his grand children as xmas gifts.Cant we impeach this president MPs? Im really disappointed and shame to all of you who voted for this bagger

  23. #22 Father Christmas, my compliments to you aswell. I know the gov’t holds the handle while citzens hold the blade in most cases, but I still think that the initiative for a change should start in my home & your home, not at cabinet office. Once we all make individual efforts to try & put food on our tables, this is already poverty reduction. Not so?

  24. Nine Chale no!

It`s not as if Zambians do not try. They do!

If we are not going to provide a farmer with fertiliser, he will huff and puff for many years without results. If we are not going to be there to protect him when grain bola strikes then forget it Nine Chale!:d

I may be wrong but, I belive the government has to be there first. But if going on holiday is more of a priority, I am afraid we will keep going back to dead projects like Luanshya copper mines. Some things can never be resuscitated but look, our govenment has said it will run LCM.

Setting priorities right I think. What do you think?
    Ho Ho Ho

  25. #32 correct how many zambians out there know that this is what they should do very few these politicians should be advising zambians on farming and how to put food on the table poverty reduction projects will only put food on paper.

  26. #34
Ba Father Chrismas` Elbow. You and I should not even come on heresaying stuff like that. Ask yourself why you are in SA. After that remember that not all Zambians can have that chance. Count yourself lucky, pray and thank God and stop shouting! :d

  27. R.B should be careful with Nenani(son)during their so called holiday because he may end up proposing Thandiwe(First lady)because thats the right age.

  28. We need to reach a point where politics is not a means to an end but a channel for social service delivery for those who join politics. The biggest problem we have in Zambia is that people come into politics to build empires from tax payers money and never listen to any person outside their cycle. How can a peasant farmer or a once broke mid scale farmer not start feasting when he suddenly becomes a millionaire?

  29. Father Christmas, I know Zambians try, and the more they do, the more obstacle they face. However, my point remains lucid: if each one of us puts our shoulders to the wheel, we can make it turn. If we wait for the gov’t to turn the wheel, we might find ourselves waiting for 1000 years!
For example, most parents in my generation wanted their children to become educated at UNZA & they spent a lot of money on to send them there, but when UNZA standards started dropping, most students did not start waiting for the gov’t to improve the standards. They started to enroll at Universities in the UK, USA etc.
These are the valued Zambian professors & doctors we see today.

  30. LT can you show my postings, Im merely responding to the misled Father Christmas. Ive done 2 good ones you cant put them…. Nizakalipa

  31. CONT: NO37
or a person who has no money or any investment not celebrate when he unexpectedly becomes billionaire?

We should also be interested in giving leadership to people who have a vision and the passion to lead the country into prosperity.Candidates should be under going serious debate on national issues and telling the electorates who are the Zambians what , when and how they are going to do whatever programs they have for the country. We should avoid appointing boot- lickers into office and work HARD for our wealth.Imagine someone who jumps from grade 12 to becoming a doctor. My foot !!!Let us wake up and stop being the cowards we have been.

    I rest my case.
    ~X(~X(~X(<:-p<:-p<:-

  32. Nine Chale in other words all Zambians should be where you and I are!

Not a solution I don`t think. I will tell you what, people try. What I am saying is the government has to be there.

Remember Foot and Mouth in the UK? Farmers were given compesation. Would such a thing happen in Zambia? I left Zambia at a time when Chiluba came into power with his rubbish ideas of saying a farmer had a choice to sell where ever he wanted. What did we see happening? They started being abused by Chiluba`s people who started buying cheaply from them to sell exorbitantly.

  33. #39 Do not even bother. I do not responded to rich Zambians like yourself!:d

I was in Zambia and to be honest there is nothing you can tell me.

I have to go nine Chale. Tula Twabane is at work in a certain crappy place in Mumbwa!:d

Going to finish the turkey from yesterday. :d

  34. Father Christmas, I have to interrupt our conversation for house duties. It has been interesting to dialogue with you though. I hope to call again later in the day.

  35. Couldn`t resist a pop at Tula Twabane#39 before I finally go.

Look here bamwine. I found a lot of orphans some of them my own relatives, whose parents have died of HIV. Some will struggle and may be lucky to even finish secondary education. Those are people developed nations look after.

If you find them in the streets do not assume they did not work hard.

    You heartless scumbag!

I am gone. People enjoy your hols! Boxing day today.

  36. There is a world of possiblities if the MMD lets go of it’s neoliberal idea that foreigners will do it all. The mines are exports in earth moving. So let’s redeploy them, to build ponds and swales, to prevent the annual flooding and create year-around irrigation for our farmers, as well as create and upgrade irrigation districts. Let’s have ‘Water For Every Farm’ – which can be done. Let’s manufacture pumps in Zambia and have more people get access to clean drinking water. Let’s build granaries in every district and town, so there are zero ‘food miles’ and enough food is grown locally. Let’s legalize hemp, so we can manufacture our own clothes instead of growing cotton.

  37. 41. Father Christmas

” I left Zambia at a time when Chiluba came into power with his rubbish ideas of saying a farmer had a choice to sell where ever he wanted. What did we see happening? They started being abused by Chiluba`s people who started buying cheaply from them to sell exorbitantly. ”

It is called neoliberal economic theory. A thief’s manifesto, all over the world. The idea is that unregulated markets will find their own equilibrium – they don’t without tearing the economy down, and this is what we see happening all over the world now. The more economies were deregulated, the greater the damage that is going to be done to them.

  38. Pheew. Missed being on the blog. guess am welcome. What? UPND you never seize to amaze me. why dont you give yourselves tips to win elections?

  39. # 3 !!! You have made my day with your comment. The man should be careful because he will find one of his sons ramming poor Tandi. Its always a tradition in State House, anyway, to have such escapades:x . It has happened to all of us except ba Betty so why cant it happen again…wait and see ! Umo Balemulya !

  40. #36 You are correcty. The chap has been eyeing the ‘mom’ for ages and since they are far away and there is no George Mpombo to wake up the sleeping N.Soya, he will have a clear run for it moreover it is rarely serviced as the man is always dozing….muzamvela saga inangu mu Plot 1.

  41. You men becareful with insulting our President. we can trace you easily. especially 3 and 32. heard of criminal defamation?

  42. “Mr. Kakoma, who is also Member of Parliament for Zambezi East, expressed optimism that Zambia could still thrive amidst global economic meltdown.

He said the country could prevail over the world’s economic crisis through seizing every opportunity in the agriculture sector at both subsistence and commercial levels.”

Thanks Mr C. Kakoma. This is why I like you powerful men and women in the U-Team. This is a time to seize opportunities out of this Global/National Economic Meltdown instead of crying foul always.

  43. 7. Father Christmas, I was gouing to quote your writings but alas it would look like I am also insulting. Please, learn to give respect to elders especially our President RB Banda.

I will not entertain such kind of recklessness on this blog. What will become of your children and us youths if you shall continue exhibiting such terrible behaviour on here?

I do not hope to see such from you again my friend! Have a good day!

  44. “We have disappointed Jesus-HH
UPND president Hakainde Hichilema says if Jesus Christ returned to earth today, he would be disappointed with Zambians for under utilising the natural resources.

And Mr. Hichilema has said government should give mines loans instead of nationalising them.

Speaking on radio Phoenix Friday, Mr. Hichilema said president Rupiah Banda and h8is team have failed to uphold the economic gains gaines achieved during the Levy Mwanawasa’ reign.”

He said government can not just sit down and do nothing about the suffering citizens just because their is a global economic melt dowm.

He carpeted government for misleading the people initialy that the global crisis won’t be felt in Zambia.”

  47. #58 continued.
“He urged the Bank of Zambia to intervene innthe country’ international money market in order to stabilise the local currency.
He said the BoZ should emulate other central banks in the developed world and do something to protect the local currency.
Mr. Hichilema said that although his party has written to the government advising it on what measures to take to survive the current economic crisis, he doubted if the people in government has capacity to understand his ideas.
Mr. Hichilema also advised president Banda to avoid gathering women to dance for him at the airport when ever he was flying in or out of the capital city.”

    Impressive analysis from president HH!

  48. “And Mr. Kakoma has, on behalf of the UPND, wished Zambians a prosperous 2009 and urged them to work hard for their individual development, which would subsequently promote national development.”

Thank you UPND for wishing me a prosperous 2009. I will work hard, and harder, to foster my INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT which definitely will trickle down to promote national development.

Such advice is what is needed in our country instead of trying to houndwink our people to do mass demonstrations at a time when we MUST reserve all the energy we have for doing work that will bring back benefits to our lives as individuals, a community and Nation eventually.

    Have a prosperous 2009 too!

  50. When did RB accrue 10 days leave? He has obly been in office for 50 days!!!!! How many days does he accrue per month? Incredible!!

  51. # 10, rogue trader. At first I thought there must be something wrong with me for not having seen TIPS, but only OUTCOMES. THIS CHAP, Charles Kakoma is a time waster. The article by PF president MICHAEL SATA, really tackleed the issues squarely. He offered more than tips on how to deal with the current problems zambia is facing. BUT FOR SOME REASON, NO SOONER HAD IT APPEARED ON THE BLOG THAN IT GOT WHISKED AWAY FROM THE BLOG. IT LEFT ME WONDERING WHETHER LT IS REALLY INTERESTED IN REAL ISSUES. Because the issues which take ages on the blog are not really worth the salt…

  52. To be honest even though magande’s statement has been proven wrong. I think that The economy should not have been affected this much by this global economic crisis except for the mining area
1.Maize,which is locally produced the prices skyrocketed more than imported goods…global melt down? i think not
2.Zambia’s budget is supported by donors and loans and none of our donors have withdrawn support in face of global meltdown. Oil prices have gone down except in zed when they are just starting..that is not because of economic crisis its more to do with problems at the tazama. So of course the govts revenue has gone down but this effect should become apparent in coming months

  53. #65 Since we are still operating on this years budget, wait till next year when the real impact of global crisis hits! Lets hear what they will say then

  54. …However, the problem with UPND is whatever SATA says they just condemn without afforethought. Just because they are full of hate for him. Not only that. They are not proactive, but reactive. They only came in after the general public talked about their mute state, because they thought they must be seen to be talking even if what they are saying is absolute rubbish just like the rubbish above. UPND SHOULD OFFER REAL TIPS LIKE PF DOES. THEY SHOULD ALSO BE UP IN ARMS FOR THE SUFFERING MAJORITY IN ZAMBIA. ANYWAY, THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN AS SUCH.

  55. Dear bloggers: may your hapiness levels rise like US $ on kwacha, yo sorrows & worries drop like zimdollar, yo joy increase like corruption in RB’s campaign team. merry x-mas
Rb must take UPND & PF’s advice seriously…his advice to his holiday critics that they choose between going also or go to work in their field was disappointing, immature and showed lack of detailed thinking.

  56. 61. Ghost Dog, you wrote that I am your son so ambuye I ask you to understand that I am not a knig of any place or forum or blog.

If you feel you can try me on anything you are very welcome and I promise you that I will give you a good run you will probably never forget.

Have a great day and i am waiting for your challenge if you have enough muscle to go for it istead of offering threats on your “am ghost dog, if you disrespect me
Your heart get pierced from hard darts ejected.”

  58. “Alot of sectors” and uve only mentioned one that is the agriculture sector… which other sectors are you talking about mr. Kakoma?? >:d<

  59. 63. and 66. Peter greetings and please relax. This behaviour of praising the Undereducate, MC Sata, for nothing has to be checked.
Go back to the campaign period of Spet. and Oct. 2008 and you will not that president Hakainde Hichilema and the U-Team promised a reduced cabinet of only 15 Ministeries and ministers if they would form GRZ. This U-Team even went on to sign a Social Contract over this campaign promise.
Now, did your Sata and his PF ever promise such or sign a committing Social Contract on reducing Cabinet. PF self-appointed leader Sata has simply uplift democractically eleted UPND president HH’s campaign message on reducing the Zambian Cabinet and GRZ expenditure. Why?

  60. #72 continued.

    Why? ….

Why did Sata fail to use this message in the campaign period?
Why did you fail to praise the UPND for this campaign message?
Why has Sata obtained your praises when he has clearly copied the U-Team’s campaign message?
Who is proactive between Sata who has copied and the U-Team which has been giving out this UPND campaign message since late A. mazoka’s days in the time Sata and Chiluba were governing Zambia with a protracted cabinet of which Sata served in that MMD GRZ as Minister without Portifolio?

I am waiting for your response this as my answer to this querries currently point to Bemba tribalism propelled by the POST and nothing else!

  61. 75. Goswami greetings. You seem to have missed this news:

“The UPND has proposed a set of short and long term measures to help cushion the impact of rising commodity prices and the global financial crisis.
According to ZNBC One of the proposals is for government to quickly start subsidising maize, to stabilise mealie meal prices.
UPND president, Hakainde Hichilema, made the proposals at a media briefing in Lusaka on Tuesday.
Other proposals include the immediate distribution of relief food and stream-lining operations of the Food Reserve Agency.
The UPND leader said the proposals are contained in a letter to President, Rupiah Banda….”

Mr. Hichilema also advised president Banda to avoid gathering women to dance for him at the airport when ever he was flying in or out of the capital city.”

… on my posting #59 above. It will be sad ” if the people in government has no capacity to understand” HH’s ideas as he doubted them!

  63. RB did not solict for any advice. Moreover advice can be taken or declined. I think there was a good reason subsidies on maize was removed in the first place. Not all advice is good

  64. 77. Ghost Dog, hhehhehhehhe “#69,i will meet you tonight exactly at 2:30 am,vest yourself.”

Be advised that bulozi, witchcraft, will never defeat my God, the Creator Jesus Christ – John 1:1-3. The devil failed in heaven (Rev 12: 9), on Earth at the Cross of Calvary (see the Gospels) and will fail even in attacking me! I have had several fights with the devil and his evil angels which my God won on my behalf and so you are very welcome to try.

I hope you will not go back as fast as you will come as I am assuring you that you are in for it if you dare try. Have a blessed day and I will be waiting.

    =d>.

  65. no wonder RB can afford to go on holiday without acrueing any day for leave because he has pipo to think for him.Is this the government expected?Rb should come out of his sleepy and work hard for the money he is abusing.Did pipo vote for a figure head and leave opposition to think for him?Shame Cant we impeach this president MPs?

  66. Damn maestro, you are a coward bro, scared you to death,Good day too,I believe in christ jesus who died en rose again,to save a wretch like me.Good day bro and have a blessed day, love you

  67. 81 and 85. Ghost Dog, thanks and take care. Nice knowing that you are a Christian too.

I will now focus on preparing myself for the Holy sabbath day which starts at sunset today through Saturday day until evening tomorrow (Genesis 1:5).

May you all have a blessed day.

I d i o t is not an insult please. I meant it in English and not “Zambian English”.

Ask people on here with British flags. I am not going to pick up a fight with you!:d:d:d:d:d:d:d

  69. I think this is healthy politics. We need to encourage this. Opposition parties need to be viable alternatives to the government and on all policy issues, they need to have a stand / position.

Whether the articulation by the UPND is correct or not, it is the fact they are acting out the legitimate mandate as an official opposition party to voice tips that the government can follow.

In well established democrasies, it is not uncommon to find the opposition and the ruling party working hand in glove (in a bi-partisan) manner on issues and also it is common for the ruling party to actuallt enact laws directly from opposition introduced bills.

    I think this is healthy.

  70. #55 Maestro Hhe,..

I enjoy your usually torrid delivery, but I agree with you here. Irrespective of whatever political affiliations we are minded to respect this blogg and those in power.

We can voice alternative policies and have differing standpoints, but disrespect and such like are big no no’s. I agree with you hhe.

  71. Mr.Kakoma please give us a break. Whatever you are saying does not add up. It is nothing but b*ul*l s*h*it. This Country and the economy is in the intensive care living on a life support.

  72. ba LT mwabe ichitolitoli!why do you have to sensor out most of my comments even when it’s not nesecary.iwe bum dem dread where have you gone to? :-w:-w:-w

  73. I don’t see how the agriculture sector can progress when inputs are so dear. Why is it so difficult for our leaders to see priorities? They are so myopic, they can’t see reality beyond the few economic textbooks their advisers read. We need food, then other luxuries like gaping at a well fed elephant later.

  74. I am going to suggest something to all you good people blaming Banda for taking a holiday. Bms9 #23 I agree with you my brother, why should Nyama Soya and his crew of cowards in the name of Shikapwasha, Tetamashimba, Mulongoti,Katele kalumba among others seek for solutions from the opposition to address problems created through their enefficiency? During the campaign period we used to see Nyama soya’s profile in the ‘Times of Zambia’ proving him as more qualified and fit for the Job. Learn to be honesty! when you are not fit for the job better stay away from the eyes of the public and enjoy culltivating your cash crops at you ‘1 Lima farm in the East no one will be there to blame you.
