Zambia: ZNBT thanks Zambians for donating blood
The Zambia National Blood Transfusion (ZNBT) has this year managed to reach its target of collecting 80,000 units of blood through voluntary blood donors.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today ZTBT Medical Officer, Joseph Mulenga, said the ZNBT has so far collected 77,000 units of blood from January to November this year.
Dr. Mulenga remained optimistic that the 80,000 units target for 2008 would be reached after including the units collected in the month of December.
“We had a lot of campaigns this year and various medical staffs were sent in almost all parts of the country to help make the blood donation campaign a successful one. So far we have collected 77,000 units of blood. Our target is 80,000 units but I am sure that after getting the records for December next week, our target will be reached,” he said.
He also said the major challenge the campaign team faced this year was hostility by most rural people in the country.
He explained that most villagers were refusing to donate blood but the situation changed after carrying out campaigns in the areas.
Dr. Mulenga said the ZNBT faced difficulties in collecting blood when schools were on recess because 80 per cent of blood donors are pupils and students from various institutions of learning through out the country.
However, Dr. Mulenga thanked all Zambians who donated blood to help save life adding that blood donation was every one’s responsibility.

I thought that target was reached, but it actually appears that these are just hopes.
How much of that blood though is HIV negative?

That question was in the back of mind when i was reading the article, but the blood is obviously screened for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Personally i would never agree to a blood transfusion!

it’s becouse of this year’s povert that they have managed to reach thier taget.pipo were simply exechanging blood with sugar,milk,biscuits&other food products they give after donsting blood.believe me you ,next year if things will be better the ZNBT will not succed in collecting that much of blood.

Not that I belong to Jehova’s witnesses but I’ve alaways found donating blood to be a controversial matter.

I never donate gazi gazi theres something very grotesque about it, my mind is still debating it though.I do not use jehova’s witness reasoning because they are just a lunatic bunch. I see nothing in the scriptures condemning it because it’s a fairly new procedure only centuries old but I might change my mind when time I need a transfusion.

It is good to donate this blood, but let us please screen this blood very, very carefully for transimittable diseases.
This alone give me goosepimples about this donated blood!!

Please donate blood you never know when you will need it. It could be an accident, or sickness.Please encourage yourself or friends to donate blood monthly.When I used to live in Lusaka I donated blood every month at the Lusaka Blood Bank at UTH it is a good feeling you are helping out someone, That someone could be your uncle,brother or nephew.

I work in a hospital environment.. the peope who receive blood do not do so by choice,,, its the circumstances surrounding them… wait till you are involved in an accident… you will have no choice my dear… HIV or no HIV.. Besides that extreme screening measures are done before giving a go ahead for the blood to be transfused to anyone else…I urge more people to donate blood…

Folks, are the claims below by a charity called ProjectZambia.com true? I have grown to mistrust charities because they collect $100 and have over 20c but this one seems ok. Thought I should check their claims for Zambia nonetheless before donating anything.
£30 can provide volunteers with a basic health care kit -
(gauze, gloves, alcohol, towels, sheets and sterile scissors) to ensure a safe birth.
£35 can provide ten 10-gallon water containers.
£150 can build a latrine.

Jaroph, I think the figures you’ve been given are inflated if the products(medical kit) are to be obtained in Zambia, if UK, yes. However, the cost of a latrine at £150 equivalent to ZK1.2M seems exaggerated as usually what happens is that manpower is provided by the recipient community, the materials required are cement, wood, grass thatching or Galvanised plastic or metal sheets for roofing & transport for materials which don’t cost much. I stand to be corrected ( As am currently in UK & in the Medical field)). So they may still be genuine but it is good for you to carry out the research, ask them many questions then cross check them out. I’m happy to help out.
