President Levy Mwanawasa has reiterated that the official position of the SADC region is that nobody will attend the Eurpean Union (EU) – Africa Sumit set for December in Portrugal if Presenedent Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe is not anvited to that sumit.
Mr. Mwanawasa, who is the current SADC chairman, said this yesterday when he was
answering a question from a Zimbabwe journalists on the regional body’s official
position on the summit.
Mr. Mwanawasa said it would be difficult for any head of State in the SADC to attend
the EU-Africa summit without Mr. Mugabe in attendance.
He stressed that there was need for unity of purpose in the region in all areas of
mutual interest.
Earlier, Mr. Mwanawasa and his Zimbabwean counterpart had closed door discussions on the 47th floor of New York Palace Hotel where Mr. Mwanawasa is lodging.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mwanawasa is later today expected to meet with the Portuguese Prime
Minister where the two leaders are expected to discuss the EU-Africa summit in
detail.
Mr. Mwanawasa is also going to participate in a round table discussion on human
rights and democracy at the United Nations Building.
The President who is in New York to attend the 62nd regular session of the U.N
General Assembly is accompanied by Foreign Affairs minister Kabinga Pande and
Commernce and Trade Minister Felix Mutati.
Agriculture Minister Ben Kapita and Science and Technology Miister Peter Daka.
Who is begging between EU and SADC?
This bears such a resemblance with the Burma situation. Neighbouring countries ‘do not interfere in each other’s affairs’. In the meantime, the people of Burma, like the people of Zimbabwe, are sacrificed at the alter of political expedience. The people of Burma are staring possible repression in the face as they bravely fight for their rights. The people of Zimbabwe in the meantime are too tired to even care. Still, as long as Mr. Mugabe has food and his wife can shop in J’burg, what do other African leaders care? As long as the Mwanawasas can go to NY shopping, what do they care? God save the people of Zimbabwe. God save the people of Burma.
The EU-Africa summit is a desparate reaction by the Western Countries. They have realised that, China is taking precedence in Africa.
This meeting is as irrelevant and no one will miss it even if it never took place. For 7 Years, Europe was sleeping and Africa took to the East.
#3 Hey. I get your point, but why does African have to prostitute itself? Is it not time to stand up for what is right and stop using East vs West politics? We already had this during the cold war. The result was: a lot money was thrown at countries like DRC but all of it was just stolen by corrupt African leaders and the citizens never benefited. This record is replaying all over again. This time China is throwing a lot of money at any regime in return for natural resources and influence. The little man in Luwingu or Chadiza will never benefit in a million years!
4 Chitapankwa, exactly the opposite will happen if we continue accepting what the west dectate to us. Sometimes its good to say no. I want to give you real example. A Zambian farmer who produces cotton sells it at 13 cents pro kilo yet the insectsides 1000% because they are from the west this what you call fair trade. You should know that Europe cannot exsist without African countries. To hell with Bush and his sanctions on Burma this man has caused more suffering to the world than even anyother leader in our time. Its time to standup and learn to say no. If you are abroad and you listen to wrong media you will get lost. We africans we are not asking for anything other than fair treatment. The EU president had already said they will invite Mugabe for the EU/AU summit in December because they believe to solve this problem as well. Gordon Brown will be a failure if he is not careful with his politics. Remember Europe is empty n terms of raw materials they depend on other countries.
Please read Rome´Agreement and Contou Convention before you go conmending our leaders of their actions they take. Why is Britian afriad of of Mugabe.
I must agree with you Chitapankwa. The rise of the Chinese and Indian economies require raw materials which are being sourced from Africa with ZERO return to the local people. Our leaders are busy lining their pockets while the common people are getting poorer than they were yesterday. The next ***** who utters the word “investor” has my deepest contempt.
HK, if for a moment you can extract your head from your behind you will see that the EU desperation is a non-issue. Africa is not in a position to negotiate anything here. Whether Africa goes to the East or the West, we are being raped. The question is which rapist is wearing a condom???? Our misleaders are in league with the rapists and it makes absolutely no difference to me whether Mwanawasa attends Portugal or not because either way Mwanawasa wins and we lose.
#5 Easy. I am not altogether ignorant of power and racial politics at play here. We don’t have to go to this summit in Europe and indeed why do we feel we have to go to some summit dreamed up by a third rate European country like Portugal? To hold up a brutal dictator like Mugabe as a bargaining chip is still wrong. Bush is a two bit despot, but so is Mugabe! I cannot accept a situation where we condemn Bush but somehow hold up the likes of Mugabe and Mobutu as role models. If the Lisbon summit is worthless, let us just say thanks, but no thanks.
I suspect the real reason Mwanawasa and the SADC presidents are too chicken to attend Portugal without Mugabe is because they still want favours from the West. Mwanawasa changes his position on Mugabe like a chameleon and is afraid he will lose points if he seen openly backing Mugabe. If Mugabe is going to sink Zimbabwe, he should do it with his own mouth, no?
Those people who think Mwanawasa is being brave by not attending Portugal are in my opinion being intellectually short sighted. The unpalatable truth is that Mwanawasa is too scared to go and stand there alone and speak on behalf of Mugabe.
The facts are that Europe is afraid that it is losing grip on Africa. This is contained among the objectives of Portugal on assuming the EU presidence. Mugabe/Brown in this Summit are stumbling blocks for the rest of Europe.. Look here, When Anglo America pulled out of the mines.. The Indians and Chinese came in and this upset the West.
Another fact is that, the West has to align itself with africa with instability of the middle East. The botton line is Oil. The Europeans know the geodata on Africa oil..Even these daily discoveries of oil news is just window dressing.. The Imperialists knows exactly where to look as they went with all the maps when we kicked them out.. All they do is wait for a puppet or user friendly govt to uneveil the known data.
HK you are right on the money.At this point in time Africa has very little to gain from Europe.Europe realised decades ago that they cannot compete with USA and fully exploit the resources in africa as single entities ,so they created EU. What they did not plan for is China.They thought Africa will have no choice but deal with the EU, but China comes along with liquid and creates options for African countries. There has been talks about the USA(africa). EU would rather we dont come together to form one country or one economic block. If the EU-AU summit does not materialise , africa has nothing to loose .EU will have everything to loose. The major players in the EU will not let a sinking boat like UK determine their destiny. Remember UK is not even one of the 5 big economic powers in the EU. Brown spoke too quickly, by now he is just trying to find the easiest way to tone down his rhetoric on the EU-AU summit.SADC has mines ,EU needs minerals to survive.
Socrates, would you please elaborate on the options created for Zambia by China and who in Zambia will still be benefitting from these options 25 years from now.
#10 & #11 While it may be true that the west is mad that ‘they let go’ of the copper mines in Zambia, right now as things stand, EU or London in particular is benefiting from the current boom bcoz the LME is controlled and determined in London plus the Indian company that bought kcm for example is also registered in London so in a way London is benefiting from the Indian run company. Let us also not forget that these mining companies are not paying the required royalties for us to claim that we doing fine now that some of our major mines are in Indian or Chinese hands. So regardless of who is running the mines, the ordinary Zambians are not benefiting. I think we need to work on our negotiating skills so that regardless of which ‘investor’ we are dealing with, west or east, the Zambian people should be the main beneficiaries from the current mining boom. If we are not careful, the entire country will soon be declared the most polluted country in the world,look at Kabwe town!!
Mr Nowhere, despite your name your contribution shows that you are somewhere. The only item in the manifesto of the MMD is wooing “investors”. The confidence that our politicians place in “investors” is dangersome to our country and like you pointed out, just look at Kabwe town to see the long term effects of these “investors”. With 3am chancers like Mwanawasa and glorified party cadres like Magande the Zambian people are guaranteed NO benefit at all except poor working conditions and long term envirnmental degradation.
One thing here is that Mugabe and his cronies were barred from travelling to EU countries about 2 years ago. Where was SADC to protest on his behalf?
In my opinion, the EU is just enforcing a resolution the undertook. You don’t need rocket science to figure this out. Levy and crew can not pick their battles i.e. Paris club and other meetings they always go to beg for debt cancellation minus Mugabe.
This is the same Mwanawasa who was barred from attending the G8 meeting in Scotland because he was not actually invited (gate-crashing). Mbeki, Obasanjo and other were there and never stood up for Mwanawasa!
Traitor!
Africans sometimes have a very cunning way of shooting themselves in the foot. As for Levy, I would advise him to mind his mouth and temper otherwise he will land himself in a very embarrasing situation soon. Imagine it was Zambia that was in Mugabe’s shoes, do you think “Sekurus and Marufu” would have even bothered to stand by our side skipping a chance to shop like there is no tomorrow in Lisbon? When our economy was in FTJ’s stinking doldrums, was it not these same Zimbabweans who were treating us like *****s? Enough is enough, we cannot continue dying for fools. If Levy wants to, let him do it in his own personal capacity instead of taking the whole nation on a suicide pact to die for stupid Mugabe.
Levy is just a kama small tiny fishlet in the global scheme of things and he should never think that the EU would even notice him throwing a pathetic tantrum that he will not attend the EU-Africa summit if his wayward Sekuru nemesis Mr. Mugabe “killer of Dongogara” is not invite also. Now, despite Levy’s stinking tantrum, they have said they do not want to see Sekuru any where near Europe! Its about time Levy realised he is the Elephant Muwelewele only in Mfuwe Zambia, in Europe he is just a simple fly smaller than even what he think Dean Mung’omba was to him.
In a Globalised market, the EU ever in search of raw material mostly from SADC member countries stands to loose.It may take the pain in the long run should SADC member countries opt to endure and go for a full throtle South-to-South supply chain.
#20 to #25, you are pissing me off now. We do no want your C and P because you are wasting space and inconveniencing other bloggers. This is the last warning you imposter otherwise I will ban you from this blog.
Go ahead you dull chap who has failed to cover your feet. Impersonating who that carries legal titles to this pseudol name? Could you you produce legal documents of birth certificates and notarized or sealed paper trail? What rules do you have here for me to observe? Since when did you become my communication or thought regulator? Have some public etiquette and legal knowledge. If you don’t know writing basic rules, you should have asked there many lazing bones here who could have given you a hand. And you think banning me covers your feet now? The objectives have been all achieved to the fullest. So Shut up or keep dreaming you cluessless waffler. You don’t even know what next or the game plan yet to be summarized. You think i’m your kid to be threatened or to drop sobs on those visionless rumbles? Understnad the world better you you take umulilo pamenso.
What are you talking? Mugabe is New York so what will hinder him to go Lisabon. This is just politicking.
What so special about Mugabe?
A doubling of aid by 2010 – an extra $50 billion worldwide and $25 billion for Africa;
Writing-off immediately the debts of 18 of the world’s poorest countries, most of which are in Africa. This is worth $40 billion now, and as much as $55 billion as more countries qualify;
Writing off $17 billion of Nigeria’s debt, in the biggest single debt deal ever;
A commitment to end all export subsidies. A date for this, probably 2010, should be agreed at the World Trade Organisation’s Ministerial in December. The G8 have also committed to reducing domestic subsidies, which distort trade;
Developing countries will “decide, plan and sequence their economic policies to fit with their own development strategies, for which they should be accountable to their people”;
As close to universal access to HIV/AIDS treatments as possible by 2010;
Funding for treatment and bed nets to fight malaria, saving the lives of over 600,000 children every year;
Full funding to totally eradicate Polio from the world;
By 2015 all children will have access to good quality, free and compulsory education and to basic health care, free where a country chooses to provide it;
Up to an extra 25,000 trained peacekeeping troops, helping the Africa Union to better respond to security challenges like Darfur.
Mugabe izi special wanu becauzi he can beat and kill people and get away with iti.
The above by G8 Summit in Germany 2007 were not yet honoured. So why should we accept what the west always say?
There is nothing special about Bob but the intrigrity of the Zimbabwean pipo is vital. Actually not only the ZIM but the whole region
What is so special about this summit? Is it going to bring about any change whether attended or not? In the same vein what is so special about Bob or even Mwanawasa?
Anyway bottom line is that RACISM IS KEY in everything happening. There will never be a racism free world. If decisions made by Mugabe were made by Bush, then they are ok in the eyes of our colleagues in the West, as they would be meant to improve the lot of the disadvantaged majority local nationals.
Like it or not the economic problems in Zim are not government made but western orchestrated. When they say the will apply pressure on Mugabe to bring him down, does it mean it is just a mere ban on official travels to their countries as EU claims? How can travels have a negative effect on the economy? These chaps think that there are no economists or informed pipo in Africa to know what they are up to? They should go hang!! To hell with their summits! By the way whose agenda is it???
For those who dont know the prices of essential products in Europe are getting expensive. EU is blaming China for the high prices at the same time they are looking for alternatives. There is just a lot at stake. These summits they have nothing much to do with Mugabe but what can be achieved. So the west always need a an enemy to push their foreign policy and interest. Why? why?
Vagabond, just enjoy your refuge status as you understand little except hunger pangs of your stomach. Vagabond, we conscious Africans knows that, the Zion train which started with fight for our freedom to have civil rights is now on Station, Economic liberation and resurrect ourselves from mentle slavery. Vagabond, the war to economic freedom wont be easy, the same way it was not easy in the fight for our other freedoms.. ZION TRAIN IS COMING AND NO ONE IS GONNA STOP IT..untill the vices of evil and policies of considering other sub human are completly wipped out.
Africa is claiming what belongs to itself..and we have always won.
#31 HK very good I give you a complement. The question is here I can we as Africans position ourselves in the world economy which has been to our disadvantage. We are looking for innovative Africans will who will produce an Africa car on the African soil. Just imagine how companies like Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, General Motors, Siemens, Ford, Toyota etc have colonised Africa and the world economically. The chinese have done it they have their own astranouts, Telecommunication Satilate, motor vehicle. It pains to see cotton from africa which is the best being imported and then processed and solved back to poor africans át a very high prices.
Latest: Mugabe can attend EU-Africa Summit…Gordon Brown what next mate?
‘We don’t mind Mugabe’-Portugal
Portugal, the current chair of the European Union, says it will not discriminate on who to attend the EU-Africa summit in Lisbon at the end of the year.
United we stand and divided we fall…
Why DID IJAYMAN LEVY TOOK THISBUANCH TO NEWYORK.
Any country that starts with “Z “is discomfiture: Zaire; Zimbabwe; Zambia, are known to take wrong turns and see only light at the end of the tunnel from the fast moving train. Sambians haves suffered for too long at the hands their transgressions presdos actions. KK used to tell the pipo to tighten the belt hoping for honey and milk some days, FTJ begged the pipo to get ready for sacrifice and chuchu has asked nothing from the pipo but empty promises and exhibiting flip flopping.
Gentlemen and ladies, no African country can do minus the west in terms of economic growth. It’s sad that most of African countries are now focusing at China as a redeemer for their mess up economies. Honestly, China has come to Africa like a flame from a burning news paper that will scare pipo at its high emitted energy it’s releasing at the beginning of the burn and shortly it will diminish within the fraction of seconds and only a fool can put eggs in one basket in trading with China. Sadly making ally with those who flushes insults at those once called redeemers. Mugabe is a Satanist and anyone who dwells with him must be Satanist. Amen
Revenge is a meal best served when cold.EU countries think twice.
I can imagine Pande,Kapita & Co. kneeling before ‘king’ levy on the 47th floor in New York saying, “your worship, your devine plans for mugabe have worked”, while ba levy looks down on them like a bunch of children saying, “I told you mugabe will be in Galtupor ohh sorry Portugal”.
One Zambia one Africa.
The Queen of England bends over…
Zimbabwe, but not Mugabe, should go to EU-Africa summit: Britain
Zimbabwe should attend a summit of European and African countries later this year, but not if its representative is President Robert Mugabe, a senior British diplomatic official said Wednesday.
“We would like Zimbabwe there,” said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity. “It’s President Mugabe that’s the difficulty.”
#12… You ask about the options China has created for Zambia and who is benefiting from the boom? First you have to understand that the creation of economic blocks like SADC or EU are strategic structures designed to create a stronger burgaining power while at the same time presenting a united front. Once SADC brokers the deal, its upto individual countries to make sure the money they are making is benefiting their people. LME will soon be irrelevant in the whole metal business. just 10 years ago you couldnt sale copper with out LME. Now countries are just using the LME as a pricing guide. Chinese and indians are making direct deals with african countries thus by passing LME. The EU however, wants to strengthen LME for their benefit and to maintain control. The options China and india has brought to the table is that you deal with China directly if you not happy you can go back to LME. Mine owners now have a choice.
It is good that Bob caught up with Levy in NY.It is good too that EU says that Bob can go to Portugal. Wise dialogue is the key for solving problems today. Bob is being acused of being a dictator. Brown is also behaving like a dictator to Portugal. As some others have pointed out & as I pointed out in a previous discusion on the same issue, EU needs Africa as equal partners. Africa also needs EU. But Africans also need to learn to stand together as one on certain issues of common interest & common sense. Africa will be the last giat economic continent before Jesus comes back. But we will not be a powerhouse economic continent if we continue to let foreign companies from China or India to marginalise the workers & locals & destroy our enviroment because of weak & poor govt policies. Bob has made mistakes on the land issue, but he is right with his new policies that no foreign company will come & have over 51% shares because he wants to empower the locals to be active in business
Levy is a junta, why did he fire Sikatana? he cheated
that it was as a result of bad health while it had to
do with the way Sikatana handled the meeting with
Mugabe in Lusaka.
#40 Socrates good message, #36 Ba Joze you are demon and I didnt know that you antiblack. Move with time things are changing. This is the reason why EU is paniking.Look they are attacking everyone verbally now its Turkey immediately they have failured to do anything with Iran and SADC. SADC should become a strong entity and be proud of what they have. This is what India and China did. I hope you have heard of Ambala Province and its technological development. Europeans they thought the world will remain the same forever. They stall everything from a tomato to copper but thÃÂs has not helped. Today is a question of choice who is your business partner. If you see that you are not benefiting I will back out. The west should just admit their mistakes over Africa. For africa we should be like Mo Ibrahim.
Sorry, I in 41, I wanted to say , ‘…If we continue to let foreign companies from either china or India to marginalise the workers…’ China has risen today because their policy for foreign companies not having more than 51% helped them to develop their technology.
Easy, we need people like you who is thinking about the idea of producing an African car. I have suggsted this in other forums & it is good to hear from others mentioning it. Our friends in Ghana had started on the same idea, but I don’t know how far they have gone. I don’t know how far the Zambian in chingola has gone with his idea of modifying cars. Can someone there let us know since the Post that brought up the story never relied to my letter about him some few year ago. I think our Nigeria friends since some of them are now producing laptops will produce their own car. Perhaps we need our own car in the SADC area. Libya had produced it’s own car. How are they doing with their own car? We need a car for our poor people
#44 Africa has capacity to develop a car today. The question here is viability of the venture. There is just too many car makers in the world today. What we should be looking for is to get these auto makers to setup manufacturing plants. Like they have done in RSA. RSA manufactures pretty much every brand of the cars made in Japan and EU. botswana is manufacturing volvos. Africa has the advantage of raw materials and cheap labor. But political instability is a major factor. Countries Like Zambia may be heading towards sustainable democracies, but with unstable neighbours like DRC and Angola, investors are still sceptical to put up such structures. If we keep pursuing civility we may be just the manufacturing capital of africa given our geo location. Also remebre these auto makers dont see africa as a ripe market for new autos. If we keep growing economically as a region you will find more and more people having enough liquid within SADC to afford new cars. That will change the dynamics
I was just checking the African Governance Index produced by the Mo Ibrahim www[dot]moibrahimfoundation[dot]org Check out how Zambia is performing.
#40 It is true that LME will soon be useless as far as the metal business in concerned, however I wonder when that will happen because at the moment LME is still controlling the metal prices and the entire metal trade. China is a real alternative for trade but on the ground in Zed if you contact KCM, Mopani to buy copper from them they give you LME prices plus a premium cost. So Mr. [Visionary] can you please expand more on how some of us can get Zambian copper for export to the Indian or Chinese markets directly? I think as Zambians we should blog more about business, politics becomes boring sometimes.
Zambian(46), do you know that Zamefa buys copper for making copper wires at LME prices !!!The physical transfer may be from Nkana/Nchanga etc etc but the price is that which is ruling on the LME!!Zamefa only saves on reduced transportation costs and thus gains a competitive advantage over similar industries in other countries.
Three-year-old girl grows breasts, pubic hair
Sept. 26 — Kapiri Mposhi, September 25, ZANIS……….A Kapiri Mposhi woman is appealing for assistance from well-wishers to enable her seek medical attention for her three-year old grand daughter, who has developed a rare physical condition. Finner Chisenganya said her three-year old grand daughter has developed fully grown breasts and pubic hair, a condition that requires medical attention from health specialists outside the district. Ms Chisenganya told ZANIS in Kapiri Mposhi, that the infant developed the rare physical condition at the age of two. She said at first, the family thought the baby was simply growing fat but only got concerned when the breast grew bigger and pubic hair developed.
She said when the infant was taken to Kapiri Mposhi district hospital for medical examination, she was referred to Kabwe General hospital but that financial constraints made it impossible for the grandmother to take the infant for further examinations. Mrs. Chisenganya said efforts to seek traditional healers’ expertise to treat the physical condition have not yielded positive results. And Kapiri Mposhi Social Welfare Officer, Julian Mwanyenga, said her office was concerned with the rare physical condition that has developed in the infant. Ms Mwanyenga echoed the appeal to well-wishers to help facilitate the baby’s travel to Kabwe general hospital for specialist examinations.
Thanks Socrates. I knew that RSA makes most of the brand cars sold in the West. It is good that Botsana is assemblying Volsos. It is sad that most of the assembly car plants in Zambia died.
Zambian, it may now be hard for us zambians to sell copper directly to China & India since companies from these countries have bought our mines at peanut prices. What do others think? This time, we zambians need to start thinking of going into partnership with foreign companies on uranium mines. GRZ should not give foreign companies the right to have 100% shares in uranium like the new one which has been announced for the Lake Kariba area.
Socrates, I realise that the viability of an African car is not good. Nevertheless, I would like to see a cheap car for the poor of our people to travel easily in both towns & rural areas & not really for export to the West. Any comment on this?
1.Not all short cuts are good.While decapitation (removing the head) is an effective treatment for headache,its obviously not the best, panadol is often preferred though its less effective.
The Zambian economy will only grow if, Zambians encourage foreign investment, at least for now. I mean there is no Zambian with enough money to capitalize a serious copper mine at the moment.I am realistic enough to acknowledge that in future there will be.Viva China.
2. It appears Levy’s pressure on the EU is paying off, Zim willnow be allowed to attend it appears. Viva Levy

I am not advocating that Zambians go into mining or other ventures alone. We need foreign investiment which will involve GRZ & or local Zambians (whites or blacks) to also safeguard the idea of foreign companies pulling out of the nations when they make profits and then shipping all the equipment they found into other nations.
See you all later.
Stone-age people appear to be allergic to the word ‘investor’, yet this phenomena is what has developed Europe and now China.
Reading between the lines, one can easily see some xenophobes who are not at all interested in development on this blog.
#44 visionary, the Ghanian car maker I have been following him its unfortunate that his idea is not helpful because he just wanted reassemble a Benz car but he cannot make the enginee. We need pipo who are engineers and creative. Zambians are creative but they just like support. Like on the drinks we had Mazoe, Tarino and recent Maheu(Sweet beer) I enjoy when come. Its not true that Zambians have no cash to buy mines the problem is the agreements you sign and lack of self confidence. A working economy will first think of its stomach before it can export. On the other hand lack of govt policies and jealousy is one thing that kill us. Honestly yesterday I went to watch Bull firing (cattle) which a common tradition in many african communities. Pipo had to pay 10 Dallars as entry fee. Sponsors paid thousands for the event the money raised you partly to go the community projects and a certain percent to the owners of the Bulls. A simple idea stollen from africa.
Visionary, Scocrates, TOP and others all we need to do is to do benchmarks and payoff our debts. Thereafter we can tell investors to accept our conditions.
Guys you always talk about Teka Farms do you know where LPM got the idea. He went to Libya and saw that Irregation scheme in the desert. The water is coming from 400km. Zambia with its abandant waterways hunger would have been a theme of the past. We can grow extra maize if we are cannot consume it we can use it to produce biofuels.I hope the expandation of Zambia Sugar in Mazabuka is to produce ethanol.
There is a Zambian Expert that used to work for Jaguar in the UK that was planning(probably still is) to set up a car manufacturing company in Zambia. He is/was said to be the top expert at Jaguar. So don’t be too suprised if you hear someone coming up with a Zambian made car.
Just remember were you read it first!!
That would be good news especially considering that that would happen against a background of Jaguars latest poor performance.
infarct loss-making jaguar is up for grabs, its a good starting point for someone with the financial muscle….Ford might just sell it for ‘peanuts’
For those who might find this helpful. FORD is a fully US owned company it owns brands such as Ford, Land Rover,Jaguar, Volvo, Mazda(partly) etc. All US car makers have had recent troubles
#59/60 Investor, tell your friend to think of greenhouse gas because of global warming and dieases like cancer. Not just buying racks I hope you will inform him. Remember in future they will be no wars fought on battle ground with guns and atom bomb but cyber wars, bio and economy wars. If we are not careful even slavery might come back in the old form. I was listen to the speeches of the leaders at the UN assembly meeting in NY neither anyone of them mentioned the troubles in DR Congo where pipo are working for food but Mugabe was mentioned once.
Iam of the opinion that this Mugabe debate is shifting
LPM’S focus to solve Zambia’s problems. Chiluba Spent his time solving Congo problems and now Levy is spending his time on Zim. Mugabe should be out of office and stop the killings and political threats to the opposition. If Levy does not attend EU in Lisbon, it’s ok we are saving tax payers money to and from Portugal that Levy will use. After all, the EU has projects that SADC contries are benefting from. How come Levy is bitting the finger that feeds him?
Think Twice Zambians before we utter on issues of this sensitive nature. Magande will soon start 2008 Budget preparation and most of the budget will be funded by EU and other donors. No country is an Island in this global village.
#62, you have finally answered question in #1.
Levy just go and get a good deal for Zambia. Thanx for threatening the EU, they will let Mugabe go too, from what seems to be prevailing now…..

Dollar falls to another euro low
The dollar has fallen to yet another all-time low against the euro, after further weak US economic data.
Figures showed that US consumer confidence has fallen to a near two-year low, while house prices have seen the sharpest drop in 16 years.
Analysts said the data boosted expectations that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates still further.
In early trading, the euro hit a high of $1.4162, before pulling back to $1.4123 by mid-afternoon in Europe.
‘Anti-dollar momentum’
The Fed cut US interest rates to 4.75% from 5.25% last week, in a move aimed at restoring confidence in both the housing and financial markets.
It was the first US rate cut in four years.
“Momentum to sell the dollar remains strong,” said Hideaki Inoue, foreign exchange manager at Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking in Tokyo.
In further bad news for the US economy on Wednesday, orders for durable goods, which include everything from washing machines to commercial jets, fell by a bigger-than-expected 4.9%.
The high value of the euro has caused concern among European exporters, as it makes their products more expensive in the US.

Zambian …The Jaguar brand is not doing good right now, Ford is planing of selling the Jaguar/Range division to a consortium not yet named. I seriously doubt they could be making such a bold move at a time such as this. If you are looking at an auto assembly, look at high volume brands like toyota, nissan etc. The luxuary brands like Range Rover , Mercedes would be a hard sale because you practically be making cars for export to europe or America with very little market within the SADC region or Africa. The key to these businesses is first develope the economy so that you have a middle class that can afford cars through various financial instruments. If you have 75% un employement such a vision sounds like a pipe dream. But its something attainable. With decipline and serious minded regional leadership these are very practical solutions that will in turn let africa mine, prosess and actually convert raw materials into finished products.

COUP ATTEMPT DECISIVELY CRUSHED IN HARARE
An attempted uprising by senior military personnel has been decisively crushed with the help of the secret services
An apparent attempt at a military coup in Zimbabwe was nipped in the bud on Sunday by Robert Mugabe’s secret service and resulted in the arrest of three senior military officers. Another 400 junior soldiers are believed to have been detained. Details are sketchy, but sources in the government told The First Post it is believed the signal for the coup to begin was a power black-out in the capital.
Two military planes were intercepted while fueling at the Manyama military airbase on the outskirts of Harare. They were carrying bombs, and their targets were believed to be Zimbabwe House, Mugabe’s official residence, and his mansion in the suburb of Borrowdale Brook.
It’s understood the pilots were detained. There’s no information on where they are being held. The three senior officers are currently under armed guard at their Harare homes, apparently because the government is anxious to isolate them from other officers. They are Maj Gen Angelbert Rugeje, Quartermaster at Army HQ, Col Ben Ncube, of the army public relations directorate, and Air Vice Marshal Elson Moyo, deputy commander of the air force.
Moyo is the younger brother of July Moyo, a former government minister who was fired by Mugabe in a disagreement over the vice-presidency. Vice Marshall Moyo was previously notorious for being sued for adultery with a policeman’s wife.
The government is desperate to keep news of the attempted coup from the general public, and the power black-out was attributed to technical problems at the Hwange power station.
Today I asked the Minister of Defence, Sydney Sekeramayi, for a comment. He told me: “I do not discuss military issues with journalists.”
But in a speech to a police cadet passing-out parade last Friday, President Mugabe said the country was on high alert in order to counter any attempts to topple his government. Observers believe he may have been referring to this attempt, which would mean the plans were known by the government in advance of the attempt.
In a previous failed coup, a number of officers were arrested in late 1998 on charges of insurrection. The episode was reported in the independent newspaper the Standard, in January 1999, and the editor and writer were both arrested and tortured.
One day, Mugabe will face C”aptain Solo” tate, he will dance to the fine tune of “fwemba” and “sinjonjo”. If he thinks that there will never be judgement day for all his stinking sins, he better start counting his numbers for they are numbered and becoming fewer by the day. When “Solo” finally corners “Sekuru-huru”, he should first server off his useless head and then the bollocks, right in front of ka shumbria kake ka Grace Marufu.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – Zimbabwe’s president, Robert Mugabe, accused U.S. President George W. Bush of “rank hypocrisy” on Wednesday for lecturing him on human rights and likened the U.S. Guantanamo Bay prison to a concentration camp.
“His hands drip with innocent blood of many nationalities,” Mugabe said in a typically fiery speech to the U.N. General Assembly. “He kills in Iraq. He kills in Afghanistan. And this is supposed to be our master on human rights?”

Mugabe, 83, in power since independence from Britain in 1980, was speaking the day after Bush scolded the governments of Belarus, Syria, Iran and North Korea as “brutal regimes” in his speech to the General Assembly.
Bush criticized the Zimbabwe government headed by Mugabe as “tyrannical” and an “assault on its people.”
Critics accuse Mugabe of plunging Zimbabwe’s once-thriving economy into an abyss of widespread food shortages and hyperinflation. Mugabe accuses Western countries of sabotaging the economy as punishment for his seizure of white-owned farms to resettle landless blacks.
“What rank hypocrisy,” Mugabe said of Bush’s speech.
He said Bush imprisoned and tortured people in Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and at Guantanamo, the U.S. military prison in Cuba where al Qaeda suspects are held.
“At that concentration camp, international law does not apply,” said Mugabe, a former Marxist guerrilla who fought for independence from Britain.
“America is primarily responsible for rewriting core tenets of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” he said. “We seem all guilty for 9/11.”
Bush has come under international criticism for holding suspects without trial at Guantanamo and for interrogation techniques that human rights groups say amount to torture. Bush denies the United States tortures.
Mugabe said Bush and his ally, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, “rode roughshod” over the United Nations when they went to war in Iraq, yet now Bush was asking the world body to expand its role in Iraq.

do we really need teh EU- AU summit
It is this same blind support for rhetoric, like baboons do, by our regional leaders that prevents our region from progressing! Should our regional grouping not attend an important session just because one tin pot dictator has differences, imposed upon himself, with the west? I am afriad development in our region is a far fetched dream and will continue to be just that!
Why sacrifice our soul over Mugabe? The people of Zimbabwe are more important than the dictator. Besides, Mugabe has not shown any regard for the leaders in the region who have toiled to try and resolve the problem behind the scenes.
