  1. Zambia skipper Katongo game for Cosafa final
    By DIANA MUTAKAFIMBO

DENMARK based goal-getter Christopher Katongo has offered his services to the Zambia soccer team for the crucial Cosafa Castle Cup final against South Africa set for October 24 in Bloomfontein.
Katongo, who shattered South Africa’s pride with three goals in 19 minutes in Zambia’s 3-1 win over Bafafa Bafana in Cape Town last month, said yesterday he was looking forward to the match.
He said in a telephone interview from Denmark yesterday that he was willing to play in the COSAFA final scheduled for Bloemfontein, South Africa, if his club, Brondby IF, released him.
“I am still thirsty to play against South Africa again. We are not yet done with them. I am very much willing to play the Cosafa final because we have to finish off South Africa,” said the Zambia skipper.
The combative player, however, explained that Brondby could only release him if FAZ wrote to the club, and he foresaw no problem with that, as there would be no club commitment on October 24.
“We will have no game on October 24, but my club has to release me because Cosafa is not on the FIFA calendar,” Katongo said.
He stressed that it was important that Zambia defended the Cup they won last year after beating Angola in the final played in Lusaka.
Katongo said he was wary of the vengeance with which Carlos Alberto Parreira’s squad would go into the Cosafa final hence the need to take no chances.
“This game will be like a grudge match for South Africa. They will want to avenge the 1-3 loss. So we don’t have to take any chances. We have to beat them again and I’m prepared to teach them another lesson.
“For now, it’s just a matter of FAZ talking to my club because we only have a league game on October 28. So I can still manage to play for my country and my club,” he said.
The Cosafa Castle Cup final was initially scheduled for October 27 but has been brought forward to October 24 at the request of South Africa.
The new dates appear convenient to Zambia who will have several foreign based players that did not play in the semi-finals against Mozambiaque, available.
And FAZ technical committee chairman, Henschel Chitembeya has said Zambia would field a strong team against South Africa to avoid being embarrassed by the side that lost 3-1 to the Chipolopolo in the last qualifying match for the Ghana 2008 African Cup of Nations.
Chitembeya said Katongo was very much Zambia’s plans and that they would not risk fielding a weak team against South Africa.
Chitembeya said Katongo’s presence in the Zambian squad would unsettle the South Africans, as they would be psychologically disturbed, looking at how he ‘traumatised’ them with his three quick goals during the Africa Cup qualifier.
“We are aware that South Africa will field a strong team and we do not intend to be embarrassed. We shall also field a strong team. Katongo is absolutely in our plans. South Africa will be psychologically disturbed if they see him,” he said.
Chitembeya said it was important that Zambia won the last Cosafa Castle Cup under the sponsorship of SAB Miller.
The company has since pulled out its sponsorship and this year’s championship will be the last one to be played under the ‘Castle’ brand.
“It’s only right that we win the last Cosafa Castle Cup and we will do all we can to ensure we defend our title,” he said.
Chitembeya said the technical committee was scheduled to meet yesterday to draw up a programme of when the squad would be in camp and the players to be called.
Zambia won the inaugural Cosafa Castle Cup in 1997, which they defended in 1998 before throwing the

  2. I have developed a certain phylosophy. I must admit that it is not full proof. It has its weakenesses. But these are weaknesses i can strengthen later.

I am sure you are wondering what this is all about. Here is the phylosophy:

IF PEOPLE FIND IT DIFFICULT TO SPELL OR LATER ON PRONOUNCE THE NAME OF THE FOOTBALL CLUB WHICH HAS CALLED YOU FOR TRIALS, DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR BY NOT GOING THERE!

    FC Köln
    Kickers Offenbach
    Paderborn
    Strasbourg

All our professionals must come back and sit on the Nkana FC Bench as substitutes!!!! Long Live Kalampa.

  3. #2 You are right except for FC Koln. Remember though that before Euro football was being watched live in Zambia, Kalu himself was a sub for Romario at PSV (this is not mentioned in his CV). Jay Mulenga ( a New York based reporter and friend to kalu) would write unbelievable stories about Kalu in Holland. Romario was temperamental and they needed a stop gap. When Romario was history – Kalu was waived on free transfer and only a Mexican team signed him for free. No insults please – hit me with facts.

  4. To all the Zambian supporters I am concerned at the manner in which South Africa seems to be behaving. They seem to be making their own rules and applying to it to whoever they feel they can apply to. The question I want to ask is, Is SAFA in anyway entitled to make discions without collective agreement with FAZ in relation to the COSAFA Cup Final? It seems that they are making changes that favor them, firstly it was change of Venue now it is change of Date and time. Can all the Soccer lovers in Zambia raise this issue with the poeple in Zambia to move FAZ to act about it. We as Zambia have a say, We can play the match on a weekend with the family and not have pressure of getting tired and late for work the following day.

  5. We need to enjoy the game with our families at home and those who know how to enjoy the game whilst taking something can do so without worries.

Now I have come to understand that SAFA and South Asricans don’t know “FAIR PLAY”! they should not become AFrica’s next Colonial imperialists!

  6. Ba SAFA or is it Ba “Suffer” nabashupa sana especially nama favour and support balepoka kuli Ba FIFA concerning the WC. So as the situation is, they feel they can make decisions that favour them anytime. They feel they are a special football association (FA), and they believe that situations should automatically fall in their favour. So I do not think COSAFA have any say on this. It appears COSAFA is controlled by SAFA. The sponsor for COSAFA, (SAB MILLER, CASTLE LAGER), are the OFFICIAL sponsor of the Premier Soccer League (PSL)in SA. So you know what it means.

  7. You are right Kay-London. I just forgot about it.

  8. It is morally wrong for COSAFA to change the date without consulting FAZ. Even if the sponsors are from SA, accomodating SAFA’s interests at FAZ’s expense is totally unacceptable. Zambia should also be respected as defending champions and three time champions. FAZ should file a formal complaint to COSAFA so that we won’t have a soccer ‘dictator’ in the region. Any way guys let it be, we will show them that soccer is played on the pitch and not by using unfair dirty tricks. Who knows, it would be an icing on the cake for our independence celebrations. Good luck Chipolopolo guys

  11. What do you bloggers say about the squad slected to defend the COSAFA cup? Am not impressed with the strikers. Why did’t the coach include chamanga?
