Shawa urges RDA to put up road signs

Government has appealed to the Road Development Agency (RDA) to quickly put up road signs on the Great East road if the number of road traffic accidents on the road was to be reduced.

Eastern Province minister, Charles Shawa, said most of the road signs along the great East road have been vandalised, a development he said was contributing to the increased number of accidents.

Mr. Shawa said it was difficult for drivers to know what was ahead of them as they drive along when there was no road signs.

He said this today at St. Francis Hospital in Katete, when he visited accident victims who were injured in a Zambia-Botswana-Lusaka bound bus two weeks ago.

“There is urgent need to ensure that the necessary road signs are replaced if the number of road traffic accidents is to be reduced,” he said.

He also expressed concern that some public service vehicle drivers like over-speeding on the road.

Mr. Shawa said public transport drivers should take precautions not to endanger the lives of their passengers.

He stated that it was sad that road traffic accidents have increased just after the road has being rehabilitated.

The minister observed that the rehabilitation of the road should have lessened the number of accidents, which were attributed to the bad state of the road earlier.

In another development, two people have been arrested for breaking into and stealing household items form senior chief Kawaza’s palace.

Katete District Commissioner, Elemani Mwanza, disclosed to Mr. Shawa when he visited the chief at his hospital bed that thieves yesterday broke into the palace and stole a number of household goods.

Mr. Mwanza said the thieves broke into the palace yesterday when chief’s relatives went to visit him at St. Francis hospital where he has been admitted since Monday last week.

He revealed that the two suspects who have been arrested were both residents of chief Kawaza’s chiefdom.

And Mr. Shawa has appealed to the police to investigate the matter thoroughly, saying it was sad that people took advantage of the condition of the chief by breaking into his palace.

And senior chief Kawaza said he was now feeling much better that the time he was hospitalized last week.

  1. #1 probably typed that statement sipping Mosi and that’s the combination that will cause more accidents.

  2. why only on the great east and not through out the country. Mainly accidents pa zed are caused by drunk drivers, faulty cars allowed on the road coz of corrupt traffic officers, port holes forcing motorists to swing in their driving.
First make road and have stiff punshment for police officers involved in corrupt practices.

  3. #1 please be serious, traffic signs or road signs, are intended to impart information to road users. Since language differences can create barriers to understanding, international signs using symbols in place of words have been developed ,they help avoid accidents.

  4. Though, the problem with cairo is traffic jams and not accidents per se.The level of service of cairo is too low and putting road signs will just worsen the situation, what the grz should be thinking of is putting some viaduct on cairo road, and the quickest way that can be done without interrrupting traffic is by using prefabricated prestressed concrete,it can take only a few days and the problem is solved.

  5. #6, IN Zambia everything take years to complete. While in some countries like Germany building a concrete house can even take 4 days and pipo move in. Why do you think Zambia is so behind? There is no respect for time + corruption.

In any case its not only road signs that we need on the Zambian situation. We need road names, location (compound) names, and not only road signs but ellaborate and international standard road signs. Learn from the nearest country-Botswana. Don’t just make a road sign on a flattened diesel drum and hung it by the road side.

  6. There is a lot zambia can do with good road signs and like somebody mentioned a via duct could resolve the biggest problem on cairo road is conjestion nothing more.

  7. Zambian roads are among the most dangerous to drive on in the world. This is mainly due to lack of traffic signs, road markings and signage in general. Driving on Zambian roads is like driving on a car rally road. You have to depend on asking people all the time if you are a visitor to the country. Even when you are in that so called capital city, Lusaka, there no directional information to the various surburbs. People in authority visit countries such as South Africa and the see how well the road signage is and yet when they get back to Zambia they wallow in their blank.Zambians are an amazing species.
