Government honours three scientists

Share

Government has honored three (3) Zambian scientists with awards of recognition for their valuable contribution to the work of the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The IPCC is an international organization mandated to assess scientific information related to climate change and the panel has produced a series of reports which indicate global warming is increasingly affecting human beings and natural resources.

The three scientists namely, Professor Francis Yamba from the school of engineering of the University of Zambia (UNZA), Julius Daka from the Environmental Council of Zambia (ECZ) and Dr Richard Mugala, meteorological department (Posthumously) were in 2007 awarded with noble peace prize by Norwegian noble committee.

Tourism, Environment and Natural Resources Minister, Michael Kaingu presented the certificates of recognition and shields to the scientists at a special dinner held at Pamodzi hotel in Lusaka last evening.

The minister stated the IPCC’s assessment reports have played a significant role in helping governments world wide to adopt and implement policies in response to climate change

Mr. Kaingu said climate change has continued to cause devastation globally adding that countries need to work together in order to reduce the effects of global warming.

He said the Zambian government is committed to addressing issues of climate change.

He said government has since taken several steps to implement international instruments including the formation of a national adaptation program of action to minimize the effects of climate change.

“You may wish to know that Zambia is party to both the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto protocol, “Mr. Kaingu said.

And speaking in a separate interview with ZANIS, National Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research Executive Director, Mwananyanda Mbikusita Lewanika commended government for recognizing the work of the Zambian scientists.

Dr Lewanika lamented that most Zambian scientists are ‘un-sung’ heroes as they were usually not awarded for the valuable contributions they render to various national developmental programs.

And a receipt, Julius Daka, encouraged the youth in the country to develop interest in science related issues.

  1. A prophet is without honour in his own country. some of us have toiled for mother Zambia but we dont get honoured, let alone recognised. But congrats to the trio.

  2. #1Prof. Honoured for doing what. Tell us what you have done and we shall arrange a chinese made medal for you. Do not ask for free favours. Honour is not demanded but is recognised. So work hard instead of just writing manuscripts. Pro chirwa is doing fine and the world has recognised. LT organise a medal for our professor pleeease.

  3. # 1 Prof Mutengo Waminga (MP) LLB (UNZA) LLM, MA PHD (Oxford)

Because you are useless fake. Oxford has no records of you.
You seem to spend your time blogging. With your ellusions of Grandour no one care if you put letters after your name.

  4. # 3 conman matuvi

Havent you got anything constructive but critisisms to contribute ? You seem to be a bitter chap. Education- Blogging is mainly meant for the excange of ideas not insults. You must have been brout up on feaces as a child.

  5. Chizungu kuchokela kuli a shushushu. You must have been brougt……..mukazilankula muli chakwanu chifukwa muti sebanye lomba apa.

  7. english is not my mother tongue. So what if I write pathetic english. So what if i am a 12 drop out. Have you got some thing agaist 12 drop outs ? If you went futher then secondary education yourself, it was a waiste. You are just taking up valuble ciber sapce.
This blog was constructive and peacfull untill you engadeged your filthy brain. You should be ashamed of your self.

  8. The pleasing thing is that u dont own this site. You are just a vendor just like anybody else. Stupid and stinky dick

  9. what is the zambian goverment thinking by increasing fuel when the prices are being reduced on the world market?

  10. Professor fimo fimo,it doesn’t take titles to recieve homage, you have to use the space between your ears convincingly to attract the world out there to notice you.Very well we recognise your insignias but come up with something in your field,we’ll hail you even more,so tough luck this time it just wasn’t you.And ba shushushu, your making elementary grammatical mishaps even when trying to insult will not be forgive this time, what you write is read world wide and your derogative claims surely have no space in our maturity handbook. Its bad karma showing everybody how low you can go,believe me…………..

  11. Congrats to the scientist

No. 15 you have echoed a very interesting sentiment and the new imposed prices are simply outrageous

  12. It seems some of you chifitas are more intrested in Grammer than substance. Thats why you are easily colonised, you now even want to write better english than the muzungus.
Some of us think, act and reason in our mother tongues. Chizungu is only a means to an end. I don’t care about chizungu.

  13. This excremental infestation is everywhere. Beware of self-proclaimed intellectuals on the blog!
Back to the lecture at hand, a big laudatio to the scientists for their achievements. Can anyone of them come up with some useful inventions as their European counterparts do? We need practical ideas.

  14. What exactly have these guys done in as far as climate change issues are concerned in Zambia? Attending meetings and getting per diem is no achievement at all. Prof. Yamba is a mechanical engineer but failed to run ESCO. Shows as your work on the the magnitude of the problem and the cross-cutting impacts in our country, and mitigation strategies that Zambia has implemented otherwise your recognition amounts to nothing.

  15. we still have people who think the correctness of your english is equivalent to your intelligence? Shame! do not look down on people that cannot write or speak correct english, this in itself is backward.

let’s celebrate any achievement and its recognition. who are you to disapprove what the nobel committee has recognised?

work hard and earn your own recognition.

  16. hehehehehhehehehe, ma jealousy. Ni wakalijo. Tell them manje. If u failed in your first assignment and passed in the second assignment, should people be concentrating on the first or congratulate you to build on the second successes??/? She observer (# 20) ubu puba. Ni wa kalijo.

  17. Zambians often discredit their own. There are many Zambian scientists that have excelled but we often kill our own. I know many. Check for some on mwapedotcom.

  18. Congratulations to these men. I am glad that the Government is taking time to honour some of our finer minds, those who take the time to use their abilities for the good of the country. It would be nice to see the Government create initiatives to encourage gifted minds (of which we have many) to tackle some of the problems we face at home. As for the”Prof Waminga” (no 1), I would hope you would return home out of desire to help your country and not merely for titles of honour.

  19. congrats to the trio.why was this not in the media wen they received the noble prize.Zambian journalists must stop writing only about politics this is real news which provides inspiration to our youths.

  20. Prof Mutengo Waminga (MP) LLB (UNZA) LLM, MA PHD (Oxford) USA, I recall you from another forum. Man, you are gutlessly pathetic. All who have been to the US and the UK will tell you that Oxford University is in the United Kingdom and not the USA. The equivallent of Oxford Uni. in the US is Havard and I know for a fact there has never been a Zambia character called Mutanga Waminga to graduate from there. From from my 1971 LL.M class and alumni records, only the likes of Patrick Mvunga are there not you fool. I still recall you admitting on this site about the USA you’re sticking to Oxford as being a mistake but here you’re at it again, stupid Grade 7:

  21. Congrats to the trio. But I suppose the prize is NOBEL, not NOBLE: check the spelling, it may make the whole difference!

  22. It is quite interesting to note that Grz is only able to honour them after others have.

In other words, the Grz would not have honored them before Nobel.

Sounds like prophets without honour amongst their own people.

  23. Congratulations to these men indeed, now the govt must invest in research and put to use the knowledge we acquire from our own scientists. We always prefer foreign consultants who would come and steal data from our scientists and be paid handsomely- shame! Honor these men further by implementing their recommendations. thumbs-up!

  24. Zambians, Zambians, Zambians…..when will we learn? Here, we are supposed to be congratulating these 3 NOBEL winning scientists yet the blog has decended into insult hurling. Are we of such low intellect that we cannot engage in normal conversation without insults?? Anyway, these 3 scientists have brought honour to the country. Why wasn’t there more of a song and dance about this!!!???? Why does our rubbish football team make the headlines when we have 3 NOBEL winners amongst us? Is it that we don’t know the value of a Nobel prize? I pity us.
