Five Chinese nationals nabbed

Share

The Immigration Department has arrested five Chinese nationals for illegally trading in Lusaka’s Kamwala area.

Immigration Department Acting Public Relations Officer Kennedy Simenda said the department is concerned about the increasing number of foreign nationals defying immigration rules.

Mr. Simenda told ZANIS in Lusaka today that all the five are currently detained in police custody pending investigations.

He said four of the culprits had initially obtained working permits upon entry into the country while one come in as a spouse to a permit holder but were found trading without appropriate documents.

Mr. Simenda who could not however disclose the names of the culprits, said the department is currently considering revoking their permits and consequently deport them back to their country of origin.

He said the move should serve as a deterrent measure to would-be offenders as the department has continued to observe a rise in similar cases among some foreign nationals.

Mr. Simenda has since cautioned foreign nationals to adhere to the Zambian immigration regulations to avoid conflict with the law.

And the Immigration Department in Kitwe has arrested a 30 year-old man for masquerading as an immigration officer and intending to obtain money by false pretences.

The department’s acting public relations officer identified the man as Burton Muzumara of Mikomfwa Township in Luanshya adding that he is currently in police custody awaiting court appearance.

Mr. Simenda said the man is alleged to have gone to an unnamed fuel filling station and identified himself as an officer from the immigration department and thereafter requested for fuel and money.

He said the department is now on the look out people that have allegedly purporting to be immigration officers with intentions for pecuniary gain.

Mr. Simenda said the department will not relent in tracing such people as they can dent the image of the department.

He has since commended members of the public for their consistency in alerting the department and providing information on suspicious persons and activities.

  1. How you fi give Chinese so much access inna we land and when dem a gwaan stooshy unnu start complain. Well, you never know seh old fire stick easy fi catch? And de fence can’t hold too much bull inna di pen?

  2. It is about time these people got nabbed. It was alarming to see them selling vegetables at the tuesday market. Are they investors or marketeers really? They are all over the place like flies in the hot season. Its time to do something

  3. Mr. Simenda said the department is considering revoking their permits and consequently deport them…
I wonder what would happen to a Zambian if he was caught trading illegally in Peking. He would probably be heavily fined and deported the same day without any “consideration”.

  4. Ifibupuba fyeka fyeka, How do you bring chinese infestors to come sell chinese cabbage which is grown by local pipo per zed.

  5. I found a story in Zambia last year that the chinese have started going back to China coz our women flock who sell vergies door to door were shouting “chinese rape, chinese rape na tomato” and this was sending shivers that chinese women will be raped!!!..Lol

  6. very offensive comment..
    this country is too reserved..
they should open their mind and heart to outsider ..
Chinese mentality is good for them, isn’t it?

  7. Immigration Department is the one which issues the “fake” work permits to the Chinese and dont make follow ups on their activities.

  8. Zambians are too lazy like most Africans. They need to be instilled with a Chinese work ethic. That’s the only way to develop your god forsaken country. Hate the game dont hate the player!!

  9. Suggestion, lets find out from Honarable Mutati & Sebastian kopolande what did they tell these chinese when they went to china.is it, to come and trade in selling vegetables?

  10. pls well done and keep arresting them, i visited bostwana and i was impreset with the quality of goods they sell, and when i asked i was told their bureau of standards is very strict on the quality of goods that enter their country. but why cant we do the same also here in zambia pls keep arresting them. cos they are chains of shops very tiny and not very good for our zambians who work for them they are hot and dusty pls arrest these guys they are so free like this is there country, why cant have a rule like in other countires asking foreign people for their passports even in town u know such kind of restrication lets cope what our fellow countries are doing.

  11. four of them had initially obtained work permits acording to simenda, but working for which company.it’s like simenda did not comfirm with the management where these Choncholi’s worked for, can imagin the incoptence of our authorities. a foreigner who doesnt even know where he was going cannot be found at the market.someone somewhere out there got the money from these Chuchus and let them enter the contry. Akapiya kalilowa.

  12. BUN DEM DREAD

Bot man, me thinks I and I is a man of peace, dem mistaken.

The china man de man luk you and me cept de color of skin seen.

  13. Ok obivioulsy its a good thing that they were caught trading illegally. Anyone caught doining illiegal activities should be punished whether they are a citizen or not. But im sensing a bit of rascim towards the chinese. China is currently a growing superpower in the world and will soon pass the USA as the most powerfull country. The fact that they have reached out to us and are investing in us is a blessing and its hepling our economy with taxes, etc. We shouldnt let a couple of bad seeds give us a bad perception of these people. Zambia needs all the help she can get especially from those right at the top.

  14. # Yeah man, I an I peaceful but still must guard we land, seen? Marcus Garvey say Africa for the Africans and China for the chinese. Seen? Black is Black.

  15. #22 I think you have got the whole concept wrong.firstly the chinesse have three markets 1 for the developed countries and 2 for themselves and 3 for the developing countries.you check out the things they bring in zambia for example just trash just a rip off!!They invest in our mines and pay our pipo peanuts and most of all they dont respect us.Why should we suffer in our own country am not saying chase them but i hope the government can check the products before accepting them like the US does.

  16. soon the china man will take over your country because you have failed to screen right investors learn from Botswana before it is too late

  17. #23 Marcus Garvey died in 1940. This is 2008. Thats 68 years, an entire life time. I bet someone was born in 1940 and died in 2008 and still managed to live a good long life. My point is the world is changing and its about time Zambia changed with it. The standered of living now in Zambia is equivalent to england standerd back in the 1800s. Thats 200 years ago. Multiculturalism is the way forward, at the end of the day zambia won’t make any progress alone we need the foreigners to help us. And someone said about a chinatown in Zambia, I personally wouldn’t mind seeing that if it helps us get to were we need to be. So anyone willing to help whether China, India, europe whoever I welcome them

  18. #28 The teachings of Marcus Garvey are still fundamental for biulding a strong Black Nation today. Even de chinese get inspiration from dem own ancient heroes like Confuzius and Mao. Only de Africans too dumb to learn from dem own great men like Garvey, Nkrumah and Lumumba. You race of cowards, no martyrs are among you!

  19. Well, we have about 20 million illegal aliens here in the US.
Do like we do. Give them American people’s jobs and pay them almost nothing. Great for big business.
Can Zambia use a few million chinese , indians, middle easterners, and mexicans ?
We can loan them to you real cheap.

  20. Ba swine imwe!!! This is the same xenophobic thinking that caused problems in South Africa. The problem is that you *****s don’t look beyond your flat noses. Don’t blame the Chinese. Blame the authorities and the corrupt and impotent immigration laws. If this was happening in England you bastards would be the first to scream “racist”. You need to have a pragmatic and holistic view of the world. Don’t think in silos!!

  21. We need to deal with those illegals with a strong hand.If you are illegal in China they fall short of of burning you alive. They treat you like an animal and so should get the same kind of treatment here.We dont need Chinese traders but professionals. Can you imagine a zambian trading in the streets of china?

  22. Ba MAI KALANGE, are you saying because the Chinese are able to sneak through, under the radar-if we even have one-, they must then be let go on breaking the law of the land. Don’t talk about UK because Britons brook no nonsense and dont get bothered with racist accusations against them when they are acting within their laws. Mwilalanda ifyo tamwishibe, in fact ba SWINE nimwebo, mwelabishi imwe!

  23. #37 – You maggot! Listen: this problem of illegal immigrants is global. Zambia is not the only country experiencing it.

The west has been dealing with the problem for generations and they have come to accept that migrants do have a role to play. Why do you think that there are now moratoria in parts of the world which give amnesty to illegal immigrants?

Immigrants are a vital human resource; and the fact the life expectancy in Zambia is now only 37 years old, the more hardworking migrants we can get the better!

Migrants are not the problem; the problem is migration management.

  24. Don’t be naive they can come and invest if they know they are going to benifit something.i mean the chinese.work up zambia, they don’t believe in humanism,do you not realise its a capitalist world?

  25. #30 Of coarse we can learn from the teachings of the likes of marcus gravey but that dont mean we should alienate ourselves from other coultures by while doing so. We can still live peacefully side by side with other people while not forgeting our heroes of the past. The problem with you is that your closed mind wont allow you to accept anyone who isnt black.

  26. keep them safe for we can use the at the next Olympic games, these guys (chines) have become good at everthing.

  27. The problem is with our FDI law. We are suppose to streamline it so as to allow only “GENUINE” investment!!! The investment by the Chinese is very questionable… So ministry of Commerce and trade or whatever ministry is involved with FDIs revist the FDI law…These Chinese and their investments are really a nuisense!!!…

  28. I thought they were investors! Its really a pity how foreigners take advantage of the Zambian Law. They are left to even use Zambians yet they have no permits to even do business in Our country. I wonder why this government entertains the chinese people. We actually do not need them in Zambia they are thieves who are up to no good. They smuggle sub standard goods in the country, those chaps can never help Zambia develop in anyway. Please ba immigration deal with these people accordingly. The immigration laws need to be rechecked coz it seems any foreigner can just come and do anything in our country but in their country its tough life for Zambians.

  29. #43 You appreciate others and you forget yourself thats why you are backwards in every thing you do.Even when they break your law you applaud them and kiss their hands.Just because they are chines,in your thinking they have the right to do what they please. The law of the land in any nation is forevery one even those who vists and must be followed, otherwise its better not to have spent time making them if they cannot be followed.

  30. Dont be fooled by these people they are not intrested in investment but a re conducting a depopulation exercise of the ir land. Some years back I learnt thst the aged are paid some allowances to go on permanent vacations cause there isnt enough burial land.

  31. One World,One Luv. The documents that these friends are given should should stipulate what they must be doing in Zambia and antwhere in the world. If they are found wanting…..laws are there to be broken or ……me gwan…no hatred. One luv

  32. I find Zambians to be racist against Chines. Crimes are committed by all sorts of people, this just a trade breach. Whilst not condoning breach of law, we should be careful not to seem xenophobic.

  33. the problem is our leadership share interests with china that is why nothing had been done so far they know what is going own but house 1 has alot to do with china remember they financed the last elections which saw our current leadership in office secondly china is taking advantage of africa curently they are training janjeweed rebbeles flying fighter jets in darfu dont forget their involvement in zimbabwe and now they stand with russia over georgia,i see a very sad ending for zambia if the govt(big guys) continue this network.there is alot more than investments.dont forget about the copper cargo that went missing.there is so much infor hanging the chaps to iron it out are the culprits

  34. chinese are even worse than bamwenye when it comes to workers wages of all cases reported how many have been persuid? how many times have they been found wanting by the law.if a zambian speaks out they are threatened that the law will visit them but it never visits the chinese who demand cheap labour without medical insurance or safety clothing for workers but our politicians are busy persuing salary increment.thats why ndonfwa kwati chimo ukuti nachipuma ukuchisanga pa street, fileina fye nokwiba impiya.at the expence of a zambian who votes them in to power, nemiponto sana example mulongoti he forgets he had free education why cant they do that for zambians UHT smells like ichishala imagine,

  35. The whole world is diversifying don’t be ignorant #8, 11 and the shallow minded. We are in 2008; it’s disgraceful that people are making such comments… May be if there was china town we’d consider Lusaka a metropolitan city. only kaponyas would vote for Sata. Here’s some homework; find out how many illegal Zambians are abroad. May be you’ll realise it’s a global issue. Some countries use it to their advantage. Look at your clothes, shoes and electronics probably made in china

  36. There is nothing wrong with a Chinese man or woman selling vegetables (or any legitimate merchandise) in Zambia. And not all Chinese pipo will be investors in Zambia. There will be some who will just come to love and live in Zambia. Just like any other resident. What is wrong in Zambia is the deep-rooted corruption in all institutions. Work permits (including passports) are dished out to anyone who has money to bribe any official in Zambia.

  37. #52 I agree with you on that. There plenty of Zambians abroad commiting crimes but that dont mean we are all criminals. Just as zambians have moved out of Zambia chinese people have moved in. Its the way the world is today. And I understand what some of you are saying with the low wages and what not but at the end of the day if there werent chinese would these people be getting paid at all??? I doubt it. And you have to remember china used to be in our position 50 yrs ago but they got out using cheap labour to create jobs, increase exports buidling economy. So maybe if we took a leaf out off their book we might be in a better state 50 yrs from now.

  38. While you’re waiting for them to bring development dont forget the “It is those that you are close to, that hurt you the most”.
    ‘Ichikupempula echi kulya’.
While the world is being turning into a global village, as a personal opinion, its pace is too fast for third world countries like my Zed to grasp everthing at once and be at par with the rest. She and other countries deserve to evolve naturally at a normal pace without having to adhere to the dos and don’ts of the ‘New World’in the name of development. It is this same new world that is causing more strife/hunger in already poor countries.

  39. Don’t complain, you are just dull and lazy. How do they manage to find openings in our markets ?. The chinses can never find opportunities in a Nigerian market.

  40. #57
We do work hard, but our priorities as a nation are misguided, mismanaged and on top of it our spear headers in most cases tend to have misplaced judgement on important issues affecting ordinary zambians. As we have seen in the very recent past, misinformation is also becoming the order of the day. In the end we are turned into a nation filled with mistrust and lack of confidence. Every thing, even when done in good faith is now subject to harsh criticism.

  41. Bigotry, how many of these guys above who claim to be oversaes are living there legally? when were they last in Zambia?

  42. ….not that i like Chinese food, but i don’t think there is anything wrong with Zambia having a “China town”. if USA, SA etc can have them why not Zambia. Zambian can have their own “Zambian towns” in foreign countries if only we could work and stay side by side with each other in communities, but alas thats just not possible!

  43. Arrest t5hese chaps and deport them!we don’t want to have another town like Madras wher the mwenyes think it belongs to them…I foresee Makeni getting to be Chinese …

  44. It’s good that our immigration dpt is considering illegal immigrants but what’s there to wait for when these chinese cannot even justify there legal stay in our country , are they waiting for a bribe ? On the other hand , i think our immigration laws are still too weak and thats the reason why foreigners are taking advantage of us .For security reasons our boundaries and governing laws and regulations are supposed to be stiffend considering at most the apsence of our president .

  45. you support chinese am sure u are the same person who buys there cheap clothes, you buy it today it fits well, mailo kafyanta

  46. Zambian would rather buy cars than invest, everyone now has a car just to show off but these guys can come all the way just to sell on a market in zambia, which most of us zambians are not willing to do, we want to run even before we learn how to walk, if anything the chines are the most hard working people in the world, look at the way the zadians are using their loans and most of them have had negative net pay and the complain of someone who is willing to stay in the sun the all day to sell a few iteams, i think the problem is the locals who are lazy and dull who just want a high life without hardwork, where have you seen a zambian investor anywhere in the world even owning a katemba .

  47. #8 & #33 if you are seeking leaders for Zed plese think of the ocean of intelligent people Zed has educated over the last 44 years. Thinking of a fossil like Sata is thinking backwards. The senile man wants to open a Taiwanes Embassy in Zambia and meke us the only country to do so in the 21st Century. He doesn’t know that they are also Chinese. He also wanted to invite Mugabe to his swearing in Ceremony as guest. what kind of country does he want to run here. Half of his MPs have aleady found out that he should be leading marketeers not a country.
Please don’t push our into a Sata nightmare. The Chinese are not a worse problem than Indians except Indians bribe Sata

  48. Walasa JJ okocha #68. These Lusaka chaps think driving salaula cars from Japan ninshi waba chinondo. Why get a loan for K50m to buy a car which will fast depreciate in value?? Very few guys are getting those loans for investment.

  49. I can guarantee you guys the choncholis have already bribed and they are out and about doing their business

  50. I say we deport these slit-eyed Chinese babylonians back to their heavily populated country. Such a disgress.

  51. Do not blame the chinese nationals but instead, we should look at amending our own immigration laws regarding working permits. Honestly, there must be some scoring points before a work permit is issued. Don’t you think it’s time the Anti-Corruption moved to the Immigration Department??

Secondly, I want to talk about the 5 year tax exemptions granted to foreign investors. Why should some of these companies wind up just when they come to the end of 5 years. eg, CELTEL, Zain Zambia to start with, who are the share holders of these companies? Don’t you think these companies are changing names inorder to enjoy the 5 year tax free?

  52. Amendment – #75 meant ‘work permits’
To help us with this, please look at UK ( Home Office Portal) & Canadian immigration laws

  53. And just out of curiosity…..What has happend to the Zambian woman who was arrested on drug trafficking charges in Singapore?
    Any update?
