Minimum Wage Act under review

Share

The labour law reform Committee has started to review the current minimum wage act.

Committee member, Harrison Chibanda says efforts are being made to revise the current 268,000 kwacha minimum wage act of 2006.

Mr. Chibanda told journalists during a media breakfast that the constitution provides that the labour act can be revised after two years.

He said several other laws are also under review by the committee.

Mr. Chibanda said the country needs to have labour laws which will be conducive for both the employees and employers.

  1. In Zambia, politics has made us poor, no wonder everyone is rushing into politics. We are paying our workers nothing. And in Zambia when one grows old, that’s the end, there are no social schemes for our senior citizens.Let us learn from other countries. It is not that we have no money, but because politicians take it all, we remain with nothing.I hope these new labour laws once reviewed will award a decent minimum wage to our workers. It gives you a sense of pride to drive a nice car that you have sweated for, unlike those given to our men and women by sitting and sleeping (seating) in parliament. Let us respect our workers.

  2. Even if you review the act, do you ever reach the remote ereas of Kasama, Mukushi where we have large plantaintaions and pay your fellow blacks K50 pin per month? Where can they cry to. The MP is hardly seen and its easy to bribe your so called District Admistrators.

  3. Reviewing the labour laws is a good move and a step in the right direction.
We hope that this good govt under his able leadership of RB will continue look at many other areas in the labour market including implementing of the new laws.
Definitely we are behind in labour laws and there is always a starting point and no one starts from the end of a journey.
So Mr Acting president – RB, keep up this good job you are doing.
Dont be bothered about those who feel jealous that you are going to scores success in many areas, making their chances difficult in 2011. Just do what you have to do for the people of Zambia.
Some people are meant to talk while you are meant to lead the nation

  4. OH I DDNT KNOW THAT THERE ARE LABOUR LAWS AT WORK IN ZED. IN MBALA AT ONE PLANTATION SOME WORKERS GET AS HIGH AS K20,000 IF THEY WORK EXTRA HARD. LABOUR LAWS ONLY WORK FOR HOLY ONES. AT ZAMBEEF SOME WORKERS GET A GOOD PAY OF K50,000 FO 30DAYS 10HRS/DAY. I KNOW MANY COMPANIES SHAME. GOD HELP ZAMBIA

  5. what labour laws? The labour officer himself gets 500pin per month, what will he do when given 2m to write or ascent to conditions service on the farms, some farms i know dnt even have unions the workers are scared to join because they are on 1 year contracts, you talk too much they just dnt renew your contract and leave to ma yes bwana, we are just waiting to change the goverment.
    CORRUPTION

  6. whats this LT??? you refuse to submit my comment by giving an excuse that your lines are too busy and ask me to press the ‘back button’ only to find all the message I wrot has disappeared…and you expect me to start writing the same thing again???? come-on LT…you can do better than this….

  7. ati shani #8 -mr toilet cleaner.how is your job,the position i told you about is still vacant, actually toilets here not that dirty as those you clean + gud money on offer hurry b4 i give to sme1 else)))))))))))))

  8. The minimium wage should be US$ 2 X 30days X 6 average family per month(US$ 360). This will help in fighting poverty in Zambia.

  9. yeah talking bout minimum wage…dat can only work effectively if the system is free from corruption……otherwise ya might come up with the minimum wage but may not be implemented by some employers and dats whats happening so wats da point of coming up with the minimum wage if some employers cant implement it come on zed i know we can do better than this we gat dat potential but the leadership we gat is really wacky lets open our eyes and cast our votes wisely coz its up to us to make our wellbeing……..remember cast ya votes wisely…hats out peace and am out…aight

  10. Labour laws do not work pa Z coz there is too much curruption. Even some faith based NGOs are maintaining casuals for 2-5 years. What would you call someone on 1 year contract with unqualified gratuities? Our Gvt. must be serious and flush out these NFGOs which hide behind the teachings of Jesus christ and yet are promoting their own people. Zambia is a training ground for foreigners who are not even qualified and enjoy superior conditions.

  11. The labor laws seriously need to be revisited. I hope one of the many issues will be gratuity. A contract above six to one year must attract atleast not less than 25% gratuity. That way an employee will atleast benefit at the end of it unlike just walking away with leave pay if at all any.

  12. i think the bigest problem are labour commissioners and from my research most of them are not very educated and they spend most of their time defending their jobs. i can name them and i have been to workshops with them and they seem not to know what they are doing. my proposal is labour office should be independed from gvt, minimum wage should be food basket say K800,000.One should not have to work overtime to get a decent salary, Gratuity should be at least 30% of montly earnings. we should have an independed board to look at salaries and inspect, not these salaries paid by chinese and indians are the bigest culprits in this company

  13. I think we need total revision of our labour laws.We also need enforcers of such laws to do their best.Government should show most companies that they should not pay employees below the minimum wage ,and work hard to punish employeers who do not comply with the law, then will have a better Zambia,

  14. Do Labour Laws exist in Zambia? Pliz go to Hotel Intercontinental and see what they pay their workers, K165,000!!! I have proof for this. Workers are on casualization for 5 months, thereafter, they are laid off for a month and after that they are called back, again 5 months later they are laid off. Whats happening kansi in Zambia? Labour office please investigate this organization.

  15. Yes, it is a welcome move. But, you should have started earlier, as at now, some companies are about to advatise inquires for labour hire. Where will the contractors receiving inquires for 2009, going to base their quotations from?

  16. Its about time. This means even some of us Zambians will have to pay our maids a little more. Some people forget that they are employers and are quick to point fingers yet they pay their maids less than the minimum wage. ITS ABOUT DAMN TIME!

  17. Wage review, not indeed!!! I know of a white farmer who came into the country and was offering a good days wage to his workers and also provided lunch, just to be threatened by a neighbour (Zambian farmer) who is a minister, this white farmer reduced the wages and stopped giving the lunch, we are our own killers!!!

  18. I agree with you # 24, we are our own worst enemies with this issue, our garden boys and maids are paid peanuts yet we expect Chinese, Europeans to respect the minimum wage law?its a laugh actually.

  19. #24 and 25 we pay our maids peanuts because we get peanuts from the government, am a teacher i get 700,000 pin from that amount i pay Rent, water and electricity how much do i remain with?

  20. LT. THERE WAS SOME TOURISM ACTIVITIES GOING ON IN SAMFYA AND THE REST OF LUAPULA PROVINCE WHERE MORE THAN 150 TOURIST WENT AT A GO. PLEASE, REPORT ON THAT PROGRESSIVE ISSUE AND SHOW US SOME IMAGES OF SAMFYA BEACHES THE NEGLECTED PLACE IS ONE OF THE FEW WONDERFUL PLACES ON EARTH. GUYS GOOGLE “SAMFYA BEACHES” AND SEE WHAT THESE ZAMBIAN GOVTs HAVE NOT BOTHERED TO REALLY DEVELOP. I GO TO BEACHES HERE (OVERSEAS), NO BEACH HERE CAN MATCH OR COME NEAR TO SAMFYA BEACHES.
