Opposition Heritage Party President Brigadier General Godfrey Miyanda has made a surprise entry
in the October 30 Presidential By- elections.
Disclosing the development to ZANIS Thursday evening, HP spokesperson Chris Akufuna said General Miyanda, who was second republican President Frederick Chiluba’s first Vice President, would put in his nomination Friday with the Supreme Court Judge Justice Enerst Sakala at 14: 00 hours.
Mr Akufuna said the HP president would be expected to go through all the nomination procedure before the Supreme court.
The H.P president becomes the fourth presidential by-elections candidate who will file in his nominations with the first being Patriotic Front leader Micheal Sata and United Party for National Development Hakainde Hichilema.
The duo launched their nominations Monday and Wednesday, respectively.The ruling MMD candidate and Acting President Rupiah Banda is scheduled to launch in his nominations Friday.
The By-Elections follows incumbent President Levy Mwanawasa’s untimely death due to a stroke at Percy Millitary Hospital, Paris France on August 19, 2008.

When FJT lost the third term bid, Sata thought FJT would endorse him for the MMD presidency but to his disappointment, Levy came in. The question that still be begs an answer to political observers like this writer is ‘Why did Chiluba not endorse Sata to take over the presidency of the MMD after the failed third term bid?’ The answer was given at the Kitwe rally when Levy was being introduced as the MMD candidate for the 2001 presidential election.
According to Chiluba’s own words, none of those who were in his government at the time were perceived to be ‘clean’ by the general public. Hence the coming in of ‘Mr Clean’, Levy Patrick Mwanawasa. If what Chiluba said then was true, is it still true today? Well, the choice of Levy upset Sata so much so that he left the MMD to form his own political party, the PF.
How this party was formed gives us an idea of the kind of man Sata is. Unlike the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) which also came out of the MMD almost at the same time, it was formed purely on principle but not so for the PF which was formed out of desire for power. That is why to date they do not have elected party

General Miyanda is an intelligent strategist. However, Zambians in general have never warmed upto him. He is one politician who no one can poin a finger of corrupt practices both as an army personnel and during his various positions in the Chiluba Government. Critics say he is a loner for the simple reason that he refused to plunder our money with them. This is a man who defended himself eloquent and successfully in the face of treason charges against him. The reason I see for him joining the race this late is due to the lack of good choice available in RB and Sata. He can not afford to dent his image by joining the race based on his high principles and just to make a point. Ross Perot, the US billionaire Presidential candidate stood for the USA Presidential election in 1992 and 1996 on a single issue campaign and lost but at least he could afford it. The General is ill prepared to win this election and certainly not on the Heritage ticket, which won only 4 seats in 2001 and he got 8.1% for the presidency. I have great admiration for General Miyanda. He is a true man of integrity. However, Zambia is not ready for a displinarian and faithful leader. They would rather have jokers like Sata and continue wallowing in poverty or have easily compromised leaders like RB who’s agenda we do not know. RB will just carry on with everything that LPM did. We all know that many detrimental things were done to this country. For example the fight against corruption was badly handled and that is why corruption has just transformed its shape. The cost of the prosecutions done is greater than the recoveries. It only managed to tarnish Chiluba.
While Miyanda’s plan to field himself seems rather late, no leader works alone. He has supporters advising him wrongly. As it were, we all know that Sata encouraged Chiluba to go for the third term. What we need in Africa to attain this level of self-sufficiency is a clean and fair political atmosphere. Africa has all the potentials except politics-wise. We have the economist, engineers, the scientists,… but politically we are not free. How many Afrikan scientists and engineers are in the diaspora? How many of them are willing to go back home as soon as there atmosphere is conducive? There are more than 3000 Afrikan engineers in Germany alone, countless are those in the UK, France and the Amerikas, toiling and wasting their expertise for the wrong person.
