Zambia in Pot 3 of 2010 World/Africa Cup Qualifiers Seedings

Zambia have been placed in Pot 3 ahead of the final qualifying group phase draws for the 2010 World/Africa Cup to be made in Zurich on October 22.

Zambia, who have never been to the World Cup finals since taking part in their first qualifiers in 1968, are in Pot 3 together with Gabon, Burkina Faso, Kenya and Benin.

The seedings for the 20 teams that have qualified to the final group qualifying phase on the road to Angola and South Africa were made according to the teams current Fifa rankings for the top seeds with the remaining 15 seeded according to their current qualifying run and recent past Africa Cup performance.

Pot 1 at next Wednesdays draws will comprise African champions Egypt, Ghana, five-time World Cup campaigners Cameroon and Nigeria, with three World Cup outings, including rising power and 2006 World Cup debutants Cote d’Ivoire.

This mean the prospect of a big west African derby is out thanks to the top seeding acquired by the four powerhouses from that region.

However, Egypt faces the possibility of playing their first North African derby in the World Cup qualifiers since 2001.

Egypt will be hoping to avoid Tunisia, Algeria or Morocco (Whom they faced in the final group stage during the 2002 World Cup qualifiers) who are all in Pot 2 that also includes Mali and rebounding nation Guinea.

Pot 4 has Rwanda who are hoping to make their second Africa cup final appearance since their 2004 debut in Tunisia where they had a modest preliminary stage showing.

Togo could get a chance to face Zambia again after losing out to finishing top in group 11 from the last qualifying stage and are also in Pot 4.

The rest of Pot 4 includes Sudan who are hoping to continue on their resurgent run from the 2008 Africa cup qualifiers plus rare birds in final round campaigns Malawi and Mozambique.

The teams will be placed in five groups of four with the group winners at the end of the Africa zone qualifiers, qualifying for the World Cup finals in South Africa while the 2nd and 3rd placed finishers will join them at the Africa Cup finals in Angola.

  6. We are in for it. let renard work on the team and prepare them adequately. all groups seem like they’ll be tough.i bet we wont even make it to the world cup based on our current standard of play unless we improve.viva pa bwato!!!

  14. What has Kalu done this time? It has been clearly explained how the transfer of players is done by clubs and they get clearance from NSCZ and not FAZ.

  18. You just amaze me how you find ways of linking Kalu to anything that has football in one of its senteces. Once again, whether you hurt Kalu for personal reasons or just because you’ll never achieve what he has, the truth still remains: he is the BEST thing that has ever happened to Zambian football. I wish he was still playing, then we would see all the wonderful free kicks again! Not even Chris Katongo seems to be heading that way.

  20. Soccer wise kalu is the best thing to have come out of zed. as a coach or administrator, he leaves much to be desired. His executive is being rocked with transfer scandals so early in their term of office. i bet his south african girlfriend is the one behind the transfer of zambian playaz.
    Lets just hope for the best considering that we are now goal shy

  24. We have just been blogging on the previous concerning stadiums. Which stadium are you going to use for the qualifiers? Because very soom Konkola blades will be rased down to follow in the footsteps of Dag and Indipondo. We have no stadium that we can use to score goals and beat our opponents convincingly? Africa cup, we are going. World cup forget.

Njooka, FAZ misused its position by signing for Mayuka behind the backs of his club simply because as a minor and 18 years of age, he can do that and leave his club without a ngwee, the way Obi Mikel did when he led to the Manchester-Chelsea saga. Why sign the ITC at the last minute, using OP stationery and without the signature of Kabwe warriors. Now they are talking of compensating Warriors?

  28. Chipolopolo head coach Herve Renard is quoted in Zambia Daily Mail, “I will love to avoid Cameroon and Ivory Coast”.
    Already chimutunta nachamba. Even the head coach is already shivering, what do you expect with the raw defence that we have currently? Definately silly mistakes. Remember at the 2008 Afcon when we played Cameroon, we were beaten (5-1) not because cameroon played a better game, but because our defenders made silly mistakes because they didnt have confidence.

  36. Cameroon, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Ghana can easily qualify to the World Cup because they have confidence, with not too many people breathing down their necks. Why is it that we cannot let Zambian players leave the country and play international football without being called up for national duty; We are all leaving and working abroad, if we were called up to work for the Ministry of works we would refuse profusely; even I as a Christian would refuse. God said let your no be no, thus there is no need for any army draft too. The more we export, the more they players shall compete for national team places; for they shall want more exposure. Simple logic.

  38. Shi mulase thats not the group in which Zambia is. It is a pot, only one team from each pot will be picked to form a group. Zambia will face one team from pot one, one from pot two,one from pot four and one from pot five.
    It will be tough. Again will fail to qualify to the world cup, but we are likely to go to Angola.

  50. #48. Pot is the same as group. Pot is used coz they will shake the vessel and draw names by having an individual pull out a name like a raffle. Every country has a representative. The pot shake will determine which gourp of the 5 seeds we will be in. Same will go to the other pots. This is the advantage of having a high Fifa ranking.
    Nigeria, Cameroon , Egypt. Ivory coast or Ghana . Like it or not we have to play one of t hese teams. It is pick your poison!!
    Don’t send Kalu otherwise we will draw Egypt!!!. Waminyama
    Personaly I would pick Ghana’s group for us.

  51. #36. Your logic is not simple. If you are asked to work back in Zed in the Ministry of works is different. You have to spend time in the country to do your project. A soccer pro comes for one game at a time accomodated by fifa. The other piont is the more they play for the national team the more chances of going to a big Club. Look at the players rotting in low leagues in Europe like Sichone. If they played for Zed when needed and perfomed they would been elseware.
    Fact of the matter we do not have quality players!!

  59. I like u guys and ur comments. Me as a Malawian who has never seen our national team playing high profile soccer believe there are no big powers or minnows when soccer is concerned. No Malawian ever gave the flames a chance to go through to next round but here we are. Chipolopolo has always been an admirable team in the region and with proper psycholgical preparation they can do anything but they need support of everybody. You have skill to take on any team on the continent. What lacks is that confidence in themselves and let the coaches worok on that.

  75. pa zed ni-down. qualifying to the de world cup 2010 in SA would be the big mistake zambia would make because of the people masquareding as FAZ in names of Kalusha BWALYA, Emmanuel Munaile, Erick Mwanza will be busy selling or signing dubious contracts with foreign clubs to fatten their pockets.

  76. the thing that breaks my heart about our team is that some of the boys cant get over themselves. the havent even gotten to the first step and they take on an attitude like they are top-drawer players.Thats the reason i like Chris katongo so much. he is a hard-working, disciplined player and he isnt an outspoken empty can. But what can we do, but hope for success. That is our role as fans.Its a love-hate relationship that we are locked in.So for no its GO ZAMBIA GO! take us to the world cup boys!

  78. I do not understand why teams like Mali, Guinea, Algeria should be in pool 2. What have they acieved in the last two years or so. Mali if my memory serves me right has always been placed among the top ten in Africa, but the team has not doe well at AFCON. Algeria is just resurrecting it did not appear at the last Afcon and then its in pot 2, come on, Fifa, coruption is everywehre- fifa, caf etc. I do not agree with these placements.they stink of corruption.
