NMC to re-open wheat plant in Kabwe

Share

National Milling Company (NMC) is

soon expected to set up a wheat milling plant in Kabwe.

NMC Managing Director, Peter Cottan disclosed this in Kabwe yesterday when he paid a courtesy call on District Commissioner, Musonda Chungwa, together with boxer Esther Phiri and her coach Anthony Mwamba.

Mr. Cottan described the removing of the wheat mill from Kabwe five years ago as a big mistake which would be corrected by putting it up again.

He said the town of Kabwe was thriving because many industries were being put up in the area, making the town a hive of activity again.

Not long time ago, the town was called a ‘ghost town’.

Mr. Cottan said the wheat mill would also cater for the Copperbelt province in providing it with flour and other wheat products.

And Kabwe DC, Mr. Chungwa said government was happy that the private sector was buying maize from the farmers thereby relieving it of pressure of buying all the grain from the farmers.

He commended NMC for the service it has been rendering to the community, especially Esther Phiri whom it was taking to greater heights.

Mr. Cottan said although the floods had affected the yields of maize in the last farming season, NMC managed to buy about 30,000 tones of maize from farmers this year alone.
Meanwhile, Esther Phiri has been awarded a scholarship to train as a coach in Germany, National Milling Company (NMC) Managing Director Peter Coartan has disclosed.

He said this today when he paid a courtesy call on Kabwe District Commissioner (DC), Musonda Chungwa in the company of Ester and her Coach Anthony Mwamba.

Mr. Coartan said that Esther would leave Zambia for Germany in three weeks time together with her coach Antony Mwamba where she is expected to stay for about three months.

He added that National Milling Company hoped that Esther would have a fight there (Germany) so that she could get another belt from outside and show the world that she is a champion even outside her Country Zambia.

“Esther has been a very hard worker even for the last fight she had to undergo training for three months. That shows you just how committed she is to her work,” Mr. Coartan said. And DC Chungwa encouraged Esther to soldier on without any regrets but remain focused in her work.

He said in as much as she was a champion, the best that she could do was to be disciplined and follow instructions that will be given by her coach as well as Mr. Coartan. Mr. Chungwa thanked Esther for making Zambia proud and putting in on the world map were boxing was concerned.

Mr. Coartan, Esther and her Coach Mwamba are touring Central, Copperbelt, North western and Western Provinces for road shows to promote the National Milling Company brand.

  2. LT, please indicate the authors of your articles to confirm authenticity of the stories. The efforts to inform and involve us in the national debate on various issues of Motherland through your page is most appreciated.
Coming to the topic NMC Congratulations for realising that a Wheat Plant in Kabwe is worth re-opening. Are only opening Plants along the line of rail when there is potential in the Northern, N/Western, Western and Luapula Provinces where you can easily export the surplus when the country is saturated?
For Esther and Mwamba, Mmm, careful! Do not rush the trainer and the boxer just because you are their sponsors. Promoting your brand will be difficult once Esther loses fame.

  3. Kabwe needs to be transformed from Ghost to Host Town. Its a sad story if you visit the former broken hill mine, zambia railways too is no good nowadays. Kabwe is the most strategically placed town in Zambia. Please lets plan for this town. 17 yrs in power for the MMD has done nothing!!!

  4. That’s why there is need to change hands. Lets try PF for the next three years and see if they will be any improvements.

  5. ….THE MORE REASON WHY THE CAPITAL CITY SHOULD BE MOVED TO KABWE AND LEAVE LUSAKA TO COMMERCIAL THEN BUILD MAJOR HIGH WAY ROADS THAT WILL LINK THE REST OF THE PROVINCES TO KABWE, KABWE BEING CENTRAL….I WONDER WAY NOBODY THINKS OF THIS????

  6. DO ZAMBIAN ENGINEERS PUT PROPOSALS TO GOVERNMENT FOR BETTER AND MORE ADVANCED STRUCTURE OR THEY JUST WAITE FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO APPROACH THEM WITH TENDERS (THAT IS IF THERE ARE ANY ENGINEERS IN ZAMBIA)

  7. I agree with African Politics to turn Kabwe into a capital city so that the so called engineers can plan good roads and good drainage system for Lusaka. Brilliant Idea, so that the ghost town can come back to life and have invenstments like Spar, Game, etc.

  8. African Politics, In the 1930s, Chilanga, Lusaka, Kabwe, Bwana Mkubwa & Ndola were considered as site for the new capital. Prof Adshead, a Liverpool University Town planner, feared the dominance of mining towns in the affairs of the new capital and on this score all mining towns lost out.
Kabwe lost out because it had a Mine, a Rail Hq, and a Civic town all improperly designed, lying next to each other and each with its own interests in the civic affairs, a clear recipe for planning problems. Lusaka’s rich, flat and unspoiled hinterland won, despite the problems that have now arisen, as a result of it having been one of the fastest growing cities in the world around the 1970s.

  9. The amount of money to replan and clean up kabwe can be more than creating a new capitla city somewhere else.Zambians Towna dn city planning afetr we the blacks took over has been a disaster.we needed to improve the outlook and planning from the colonialists but we worsened it.

Unplanned settlement arre the order of the day for political expediency.

politicians rule and the qualified zambian Urban & Town Planers are still sleepy like RB.

  10. ZAMBIA HAS MONEY HOW COME WE CAN SUBSIDISE FERTILIZER BY 75%
WE CAN REVAMP KABWE.THE COUNTRY IS RICH WE JUST DONT NEED POOR MANAGERS LIKE BANDA.VOTE WISELY

  11. It is encouraging to know that NMC managed to buy about 30,000 tones of maize from farmers. Mr Cottan keep it up! May your kind of thinking influence many business people.

Mother Zambia will only survive through improved agric efforts. The hunger in the late 70s, desperation in the 80s and frustrations in the early 90s were shamefully painful. These, however, taught many Zambians especially on the copperbelt to appreciate farming even on a small scale. We thank God for our minerals and the (oil!?) but, they are like promisory notes remember! Farming is a faithful friend.

  12. To the young gentleman that worded the entry at #12, it is nice to know that Zambians can vary their vocabulary range when presenting their thoughts. You informed us, and educated while keeping us entertained. I need not comment any further. May God bless Zambia.

  13. I SUGGEST ALL ZAMBIANS IN OTHER CONUTRIES STUDYING SHOULD CONSIDER GOING BACK WHEN THEY COMPLETE THEIR UNIVERSITY STUDIES TO GO AND IMPOWER THE COUNTRY. STATISTICS SHOWS THAT 90 PERCENT OF STUDENTS WHO COMPLETE UNI FROM ZAMBIA IN OTHER COUNTRIES DONT GO BACK AND NEITHER DO THEY WORK IN THEIR SPROFESSIONAL OF SPECIALLITY WHEN OVERSEAS. SO PLEASE GO BACK YOU MAY BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT. ALA ABALIKO KU ZAMBIA TABASAMBILILA. EDUCATION IS VERY IMPORTANT DO YOU THAT KAMUZU BANDA WALKED FROM MALAWI TO SOUTH AFRICA IN SERCH OF EDUCATION AND LATER FLEW TO ENGLAND AND WHEN HE RETURNED BECAMSE PRESIDENT. DO WASTE YOUR EDUCATION AND START CLEANING OLD PIPOS BUMS
