Universal Mining Steel plans on course

Share

Universal Mining and Chemicals Limited in Lusaka’s Kafue district has now completed installing power at the steel plant and has started testing equipment in readiness for the commencement of operations soon.

Company Managing Director Muhammad Khalid said the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) had now completed installing all the electrical works which would enable the plant run with sufficient power. He said the plant required enough power to run heavy duty machinery and was pleased that this part was now over.

Mr Khalid told ZANIS in an interview in Kafue today (Thursday) that the company has now embarked on testing machinery at the plant to prepare itself for operations adding that scrap metal which used to be in Lusaka has now been shifted to Kafue for use once operations commenced.

Mr Khalid expressed optimism that nothing will with hold the company from starting operations as major works on power have been addressed. He said the country should expect products of the steel plant very soon.

And Mr Khalid has allayed fears that the steel factory may not be set up and that the company may shift its area of interest following the death of President Mwanawasa who passed on in August this year.

He said the company was not worried by the development and the upcoming elections as its plans still remained intact.

Mr Khalid said the company was a Zambian firm aimed at contributing to national development hence people should not be afraid. He assured that plans of developing the company was on course and phases will be implemented accordingly.

  1. If it comes to fruition, the plant will be a big step in the right direction. The economy will raise more forex from processed steel than it does from scpap metal.

  2. I thank the management dont loose hope!at least may be price of steel be fair.what type of products will be there.with new govt things will be monitored. It had gone so many political antagonism.Thanx khalid.

  3. That Plant was construted too close to residential houses. I have been wondering why the Ministry of Environment approved such a venture close to houses (Kafue Estates). Pollution danger’s have they been taken care of. already estates C5 westrern area is heavily polluted with stench from LEE yeast gases. Now that Plant though welcome wrongly situated and I doubt if pollution issues were taken care of. Corruption was at play I’m sure to set up plant at that piece of land. I fear for my grandmothers health now.

  4. i hope the govt will give our own Zambian company tax consessions as they have done to foreign investors.Govt needs to nurture our local industry otherwise we’ll end up like what is happening at Zambian Airways.Govt has put personal issues at the expense of national development.Zambian Airways currently employs more than 200 Zambians ang these risk loosing employmentbecause of selfish politicians who are only interested in personal gains and punishing individuals with opposing views.

  5. This is meaningful indeed. I hope our fellow ZED employees will NOT be paid peanuts! Cause efyo besa bamumbwe! So you investor, don’t just be an infester.

  6. I’m even worried of telehpone and data cables, pylon parts, man-holes, robots poles, bridge caveats, etc. The police should come up with what is declared scrap? Otherwise, even cars will be sold to these guys for recycling, a frmawork should be put in place to deter people from getting anything made of steel.

  7. MEANINGFUL INVESTMENTS INDEED BUT ON A WRONG SITE. 500 METRES OPPOSIT IS NABOYE HIGH SCHOOL, NOISE,AIR and whatever kind you can think of is POLLUTION. NEXT TO THE SCRAP ARE HOUSES. PEOPLE PAID BELLOW 600,000. THIS IS VIOLATION OF LABOUR LAWS. KHALID IF YOU WANT TO STAY THERE PAY 800,000 MINIMUM, STREET LIGHTING TOO AS SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY. LOOK AT CHILANGA CEMENT, A CLINIC ETC zambia for SATA………..

  8. I doubt if they are going to give them normal salaries.they always look to fellow mwenyes as they do at Trade Kings.

  9. A good development to have a steel manufacturing plant in zambia. iam only worried that it will be the mwenyes running the show. The incoming goverment (sata and crew)make sure that these characters’s conditions of service are checked.

  10. I wonder in what sense it’s a “Zambian” company as Mr Khalid says… I was under the impression it was Indian. And it just makes me sad to see anyone celebrating that Zambia now has the ability to melt scrap metal… I mean please

  11. Its a milestone in uplifing the lives of people not only in kafue but zambia as a whole.

my advice to the company is that they should practice and observe good corporate social resposibilty if the company is to benefit the locals.

  12. Its good investment but Pollution will greatly hurt kafue estate residents. The plant is in a residential area and the environmental council of zambia did not approve of the site. as usual corruption played a big part…

  13. ALL you losers who claim to be zambians living in foreign countries i’d advice you to go back to zambia than just castigating native comments on the project.

Trade Kings is a Zambian Company where the directors were born, bred and continue living in zambia. this guy might be Indian by decent but his more Zambian than you fu*k*r*. his done more for zambian and the average joe bloke.

in terms of reasoning, it just shows how shallow some of these black zambians people can be even after living in foreign country where they do dirty jobs. they still dont seem to appreciate somones hardwork.

  14. Black Zambians why dont you set up your own companies and employ your so called fellow Zambians and pay them heavenly salaries. Mwanyanya mwe! Always whinging! There’s no free lunch you morons! If Trade Kings have employed their kith and kin…that’s their choice. Just setup your company and employ whoever you want to employ. Lilata mina batu! Mulatusabila!

  15. Gentlemen there is Proffessor Frank Tembo(Former dean of Mines UNZA)now a Director at Gemstome Processing and Lapiditary Training Centre who was caught red-handed having s.ex with a married woman.he was badly beaten and he died this afternoon at Wusakili Mine Hospital.Too bad for the proffessor, but malibu yaku ilombela.

  17. Open the plant and employ Zambians and let the remunerations be sensible not just crap. Tatulefwaya ukulaumfwa ati abantu balefola ama 2 zali olo 5 zali. What are they gona do with that? Food basket in Lsk stands at 1.5 – 1.7 or somewhere there. Think for yourselves and not tukambe ukulamipushing’a ba ngwele imwe.

  19. They should start making rails to improve transport system in the country. They should be serious with big projects and not making pots and dust bins. I’m seriously considering investing in transport industry, especially rail network.

  20. number 15. don’nt be over confident that PF will win elections. running a country is not like runnning a Party.

you are the kind of people who die of BP after loosing.

  21. “Peter asked Vice-President Banda to forgive all those who voted against him”. Why the word ‘FORGIVE’? Not everyone can vote for one candidate. If no people are opposing you, the know there is something wrong with you or the system or both. Please, read the post about the divisions in MMD.

  22. We are requesting for the consent letter for the Mumbwa Hematite Exploration site that you have currently abandoned and have commenced with the decommissioning activities.
