The Zambia Consumer Association has blamed the Milling companies in the country for unjustifiably inflating prices of Mealie meal.
Executive Secretary Muyunda Lililonga said the Millers had a hidden agenda for increasing prices on the commodity saying what they were doing was tantamount to bringing down the government..
In an interview with ZANIS in Kitwe Wednesday, Mr. Lillilonga wondered why prices of the staple food were too high when the millers had bought the maize cheaply.
He explained that the millers claims that the high prices of mealie meal was due to high maize prices were unjustifiable.
Mr. Lillilonga called on the government to intervene quickly because it was too dangerous politically as majority of poor Zambians would blame the new administration of the newly elected Rupiah Banda over the prices.
He called on the millers to be partners with the government because what they were doing now after elections was not healthy.
In another development, Mr. Lillilonga has said the appreciating of the Kwacha against the united states dollars was an indication of confidence that investors had in the new government of President Rupiah Banda.
The executive secretary added that since the Kwacha had regained strength, he was hopeful that the prices of imported goods would also come down.
And ruling MMD Copperbelt MMD Copperbelt Provincial Youth Chairman Richard Mofya says there is no justification for increased mealie meal prices in the country.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS Ndola Wednesday morning, Mr Mofya said there was no justification for retailers to increase the price of commodity without government’s authorisation.
Mr Mofya said there was need for retailers that had increased the prices of the commodity to justify their action.
He observed that there was need for all stakeholders to move in accordance to governments’ decision on prices of commodities in the country.
He said it would be the youths who will suffer most because they were unemployed and did not have a stable source of income.
Mr Mofya advised business people to be considerate to the fact that the Zambian Kwacha had started to appreciate soon after the elections hence there being no tangible justification for increasing the price of mealie.

Let da postnewspaper influence da reduction of m meal like da way they influenced poor zambians 2 vote 4 sata
you when we are doing anything let us learn to think and analyse all angles–the govt before elections decided to hike the purchase price for maize by food reserve agency, this was not done in good faith but to earn votes from farmers and yet they forgot that they were bringing disaster to many households.Millers are responding to the anticipated hikes of maize prices brought about by govt.If there is no justification let those millers like Tetamashimba’s milling in luapula maintain the old prices.Govt please be serious in your dealings before you increase poverty levels in our country-we only have one zambia and that is what we want to depend on.GOD BLESS ZAMBIA
BLAME THE NYAMA SOYA GOVT NOT THE INNOCENT MILLERS. THIS IS JST THE BEGINING OF CHAOS. GOD HAVE U SATA & HH SO THAT THERE CAN BE CHANGE BUT U REJECTED THEM IN EXCHANGE 4 SUGAR. MWAPYA MUZA CHUCHA
AH! AH! SO THE FREE MEALIE MEAL HAS GONE WITH THE ELECTION. CONTINUE GIVING PEOPLE FREE MEALIE MEAL, SUGAR, COOKING OIL AND OTHER ESSENTIALS. SOME CHAPS THINK USING THEIR BUTTOCKS, REALLY. HOW CAN ONE START AFIGHT WHICH HE WONT FINISH. YOU CHAPS, YOU TAKE ZAMBIANS FOR F@@LS, DON’T YOU?
ba sugar daddy, muli kwisa?

hahaaaaa.
So then dont complain imitengo since you say it a free trade. i will start selling my iceblock now at k6000 each, and macscool k8000 each after all we buy water in thousands
Blame MMD and RB for taking voters for a ride. We told you to vote for Sata but you did’nt want to listen…fyenu ifyo nomba.
Life is funny. There is a Zambian who is one of those brilliant medical doctors in the uk. All his years in the uk he has been saving up and waiting for the replacement of govt with a more responsive one. He has really saved up several hundreds of thousands. During the past elections he was allegedly to have written a resignation letter in advance thinking when pf wins he will immediately tender in his resignation letter and go back to invest his money in Zambia by forming up a company and start employing a few locals. Things never happened so he has withdrawn from his plans…
…This guy has the interest at heart in contributing to the economic development of the country. He tell listeners that, “you know Zambia’s electors are so dissapointing the way they elect leaders. I have spoken to a no. of zambians who are also thinking like me. however, they don’t want to risk their hard-earned money by investing in zambia during the reign of poor politicians. They want to wait for a president who advocates hardworking , such as Sata.”
The point am trying to drive home is that as long as electors continue with poor leaders most zambians in diaspora will gittery about home-coming to invest. People, especially in the industrialized countries work 100 time the way they work in zambia there4 they would like to see at least an attitude close to that being backed by a charismatic and hardworking leader. And not the one who is fond of sleeping.
Zambians are just lazy
We have land but we seem to be growing grass and shrubs. We beg for investors but complain when they make money and progress. We cry for change but we still vote for the same people who have done nothing but enriched themselves and families.
We are the best at complaining while we fold our arms.
If only we workd as hard as our brothers in the west.
Lets change our work culture and put our country first, it all begins with you.
I wonder if some people are normal up there.Instead of contributing positively,u are fighting to be called # 1.uli chipuba sana,we have to be seriousy with our contributions here.So many people are bloging around the world. And what wil they think about Zambians,if they just find nosence. Wanting to be called # 1,like a grade 1 at primaly school.
Don’t worry Zambians, maybe after finishing his term, Obama might just consider coming to rule a smaller country like Zambia. Hey, he will only be 54 yrs young and still bright!!!
#18 Ba Chewe, you don’t know how it feels to be #1…it’s so boom-bastic! Almost like kicking McCain’s @ss! Just join the fun and try it too. You’ll see what I mean.
#20 What a shame, How can you support such nonsence of being number 1. Seriouse issues have been raised. Think like an intellectual, think of the people back home, As far as i’m concerned you have relatives back home(zambia) so if they are affected just know that you are also affected.
The increase in mealie meal price is a sad development. Mr Magande, you assured the nation that the global rise in food prices was not going to affect Zambia. Whats happening now
I honestly think that the people that have been supporting Sata such as GBM and others will have a big say which will need gov control measures so that this people dont hink they are better than all of us
#21 Can’t you see the irony in my posting…I’ve got the house full of friends and we’re washing down Obama’s victory with a few Guiness and German lager. I’m in a mellow mood…seka ko fye, naiwe… 😉
PS. I send enough money regularly back home so they can’t complain…
#24 na seka ha… ha… ha… wa umfwa bwino te? uuuuhhhh????????? GUINESS?????? maybe?
I think everything will go back to normal as soon as Sata is delt with, this is just one of those things, just trying to test our government, hope all go well soon.
WE WANTED SATA BUT YOU PEOPLE KEPT CALLING US ALL SORTS OF NAMES. HERE YOU ARE NOW CRYING… ZAMBIA NEEDS A NO NONSENSE LEADER TO RESTORE THE SANITY IT ONCE HAD. IN MY OPINION I THINK EVEN A MILITARY GOVT CAN DO. ARE YOU HAPPY SEEING THE SAME PEOPLE GETTING RICH? OUR WEALTH MUST BE EVENLY DISTRIBUTED… THEY MAY RIG BUT FOR HOW LONG? GOD IS WATCHING ! SATA AND PABWATO FOR LIFE… 2011
Sata 2011?? uuuhhhh, KAYA?? Only God knows.
#26 BO BEULA. YOU ARE SPOT ON, ON SATA. ALTHOUGH I DO NOT AGREE WITH YOU ON A MILITARY GOVT. PABWATO IN 2011. SATA HAS PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS TO MOST OF ZAMBIA’S ECONOMIC PROBLEMS.
I amy not be ecomomist but I could read between the lines that prices of mealie meal would go up. The FRA increased the floor price for maize during the campaign period. Because of that farmers started demanding more money for their maize from the private buyers or else they were going to sell their maize to FRA. This meant that millers were also buying maize from the private people at higher price. So this LIlilonga must start thinking before he opens his mouth. This man is an MMD puppet looking and must hold that position. We are seeing the effect of greed and wanting to get votes from farmers being felt by ordinary people.
Marabish to those fighting to be number one on this chat. Mealie meal price at now is not being determined by Banda…but by the global issues at hand which had for sometime been coshioneds by the so called international donars and government at large! Muletontonkanya…muziganiza 9 Mukalale namutauni; ukwabula puuuulania..mukachuuulaaapofye…)!
THE PRICE OF MEALIE MEAL IS YET TO HIT THE ROOF IN DECEMBER, JANUARY AND FEBRUARY. NYAMA SOYA WON’T EVEN BE THERE TO DISH IT OUT LIKE HE DID A FEW WEEKS AGO. “AKUDYA EKA DADDY”. MWAPYA, YOU REJECTED A PRAGMATIC MAN.
#15 Peter
That Zambian doctor & those ”many” Zambians in diaspora must be funny characters!!!!!!!!!!
#28 Peter, apart from reduced taxes, can you tell us which of PF’s policies would have made some of us pack up & go running to make more money in Zambia than we currently do.
selfiness which zambians have esp politician is the factor contributing to this embarassing situation imagine a 25kg a pamela going at K70,000 RB do something u a zambian and remember GOD is wathing what u people are doing and very soon u are going to die and face GOD like mwanawasa and my warning is that very soon we are starting assasinating politician that is when u will learn BACHIBWI
Let’s see how many rural voters are going to receive hand-outs of mealie meal at these prices!! It’s not the same as sugar!! But it is the same story every election year. The villagers are duped and then dumped! Guess who will starve? You reap what you sow.
Already RB has failed, during his campaign he gave out alot of sugar, millie meal, increased price of maize and reduced fertilizer to K50 PIN, just to get some votes from hopeless Zambians. Can he now fix down the price of millie meal?
Poor farmers and villagers dont even complain you are used to live in poverty.
its funny to hear that thr villagers out number town dwellers from what i know its the opposit as everyone has migrated to the cities.even if we blog about villagers they dont read this no access so lets talk constractive issues.no internet in kalabo, chilubi and petauke
It all comes down to inflation and other factors which the governemnt has control. Why point at the millers? These guys are in business and they have their own challenges. The millers want to make money and its always the conumers who will suffer. If governemnt wants to please the farmers by hicking the prise of maize grains, who do they think will benefit more?
Who are crying for high mealie-meal prices? Those are thugs from Chawama, with due respect to the few teachers and nurses. It’s not a rural voter; one who has food all year long. Give them fertilizer that they grow their own food President. Earn your life; Earn your own living.
This is what you voted for. We told you to vote for Sata but did not listen. Me I am here confortable and having 3 good meals plus ka beer while you suffer. This is just the beginning. You don’t listen when people tell you. Now go to state house and get Sugar and mealie meal. Go on millers and hike mealie meal price until most Zambians die of hunger since they don’t listen.
#12 you will price yourself out of business
The solution is very simple.
The govt should buy maize from farmers at the price they are charging right now but they should sell to the millers at a lower price. They should probably sell the maize to millers by K20,000.00 less than what they are buying from farmers.
By doing this, you have created a win-win situation.
@#28. Peter
Please. I am very curious to know. What are Sata’s solutions to Zambia’s economic problems??
Don’t complain thats what you wanted. You remember when doctors went on strike demanding for equipment to use in hospitals no one supported them until chiluba fired them. Now when you go to the hospital and you are told the X-ray machine is not working you complain.Don’t complain you were happy when the doctors were fired. If you had supported them maybe things would have been better. They didn’t want more money in their pockets but the wanted better hospital for all, wether rich or poor.Don’t just complain, act bena zambia.
You are the ones who voted for the MMd and their dirty policies towards Zambians. I just hope that the price will even reach K100,000 a bag.
its interesting to note how an increament of K1000,K2000 per bag can generate high debates!I know one miller has increased by K11,000 but still there’re others with just a K1000 or K2000 increament!Sometimes I doubt the honesty in some of these debates.
Hey LT can u just bring us another nude pic for us to debate but atleast this time around pick on a young lady,,,,,say in the early twenties & preferably in a bikini or somethin! But ba LT fye naimwe simumvela!Bloggers & other zambians were just conplaining about the post for publishing the nude pic then u also publish it on the internet!
Sata 2011?? uuuhhhh, KAYA?? Only God knows.
The young these days die earlier than the old. So kaya is mainly applicable to the young.
hey LT pls can u also bring us a topic about puppies? You see our american friends are very advanced!Them they’ve moved a step further by now debating what kind of breed of dogs will make it as “first puppy”!Too much of nshima & nude pic debates so lets have something about puppies! Are we not concerned about what puppy RB family will take to state house???????????????????
# 48. RB does not need a puppy he needs a sixteen year old virgin as the second first lady. The question should be where is she going to come from?
Sugar daddy has ran out of sugar…thats why he’s flying out to S.A. in the hope that his imagine builders would have portrayed a reduced price of mealie meal wen he gets back
#49. I’d also need such a puppy but not a sixteen yr old! I don’t encourage going for the under aged but again I wouldn’t want a fourty yr old virgin!
rb do something…………………..
Ba Muyunda which govt are millers trying to bring down? Please lets look at facts as they are. Gvt reduced cost of ferterlize etc so they can also reduce the price of maize meal using the same formula. Elections are over so you and me ‘ve gotta fend for ourselves
Supergal, for your own information, internet is everywhere in zambia. How do you think election results were transmitted other than fax? I have been to petauke and I found several internet cafes with locals flocking to surf the web. I also saw the same when I went to sesheke. Some of these “villagers” do participate in these blogs. Or perhaps those are the few that voted for anyone other than RBB!
RB can do whatever he wants! I dont care anymore. He can even marry a donkey as far as Im concerned. The one I really wanted at plot one is not there, so what the hell. We feel for the Man of Action
we were telling you to vote for the right people, now you will see the true colors of MMD, ba mumbwa mumbwa imwe. Infact the price should go to something like 100000 pin. you will be getting your meals and sugar from state house.
ifwe ni zee, no matter how they increase we will afford.
A bunch of PF sympathisers …. reign on them RB.
By the way guys… What status is the house that Maureen Mwanawasa has rejected? Is it that bad as to reject it or she wants another state house built up… I am disappointed at her refusal for the offer though i give a lot of respect to our Late President.
Peter
A very funny story. Dont try to hide behind that story. Sata would have caused a terrible confusion to the Zambian economy. Look at sata’s rantings, they cant work anywhere in the world. Grow up.
#3 you’re third lol, unga wadula guys thats what you wanted you who voted MMD,ifwe ni pa bwatoooooooooooooo
#24 you are very dull,Why are you pretending to be leading a nice life and boasting that you send money home.you are just wallowing in the poverty of Zambia in some township or Compound, you think we dont the secret with the flag.Wake up and be youself you will never drink germany Lager.if it shows the germany flag it does not necessary mean that you are there.
#58 can you imagine the governament has renovated a house for her at almost 1billion and she rejects it? She is not even entitled to it because her husband already got his benefits for the first 5 years he completed. This one he didnt finish so let her move into her husband’s house. After all she was not president herself. Corruption at it’s higest!!!!
Government,Ililonga and Mofya are not sincere with their claims, honestly zambians we can’t blame the millers but our GRZ.just recently they increase the price of maize to about K 55,000.00 and what do you expect from millers is to also hike the price of mealie meal,so stop talking nonsense or reduce the price of maize.millers can’t reduce the price because they are getting expensive maize from farmers. think B4 you open your mouth ililonga GRZ and mofya.
Tatuleukita Ubwali bulechepa pantu mutengo wabunga naunina ukuchila amalipilo elo nabambi tababomba. Tulekabila ukulya uluchelo, akasuba nechungulo nomba tulefilwa mulandu wamitengo wafyakulya nauchilamo. WHO IS GOING TO SPEAK FOR US THE POOR???????????????????????

#6 you are right the opportunity to elect a vibrant young man slip through our fingers coz of illiteracy leading to tribalism. Bembas are the worst tribalists. When have they ever voted for a Tonga or Lozi? In 2001 Mazoka was the best yet the Bemba vote went to LPM (M.H.S.R.I.P)who was at that time already sick. Viva HH 2011
No details given about the status of the house. Reason for her rufusal is that she needs a modern house. I suppose the one in Roma is not according to her.
This is bull s*#%t! How can government allow such nonsense? Where is a jobless man with a family of six going to get that K60,000 three times a month to sustain his family? MMD has really played and failed us! I pity those who wasted their votes on the faulty watch coz of the false promises. They politically reduced fertilizer prices just to hoodwink you, yet on the ground the situation is different. The fertilizer prices are not even at K50,000 per 50Kg. People learn to wake up this is your own country and if you can’t live with a free state of mind in your own territory, do u think you will do so elsewhere?
Ba #68 For goodness sake you do not wish quick death for someone no matter how much you do not support their views/opinions or hate them. Such things are left to nature’s predicament coz by you doing so, the spell might just turn to yourself! All the best in your long life
Mealie Meal price go up. It is not about who we voted but about the global price of goods going up and the slamp in the price of copper. Any govt could have faced the same situation. And for those who really have some farm somewhere know that during this time of the year Nov-Feb mealie meal prices go up. Farmers (“uneducated villagers” who voted for RB)as most of you “educated” urban people call them , usually hold on to their produce around this time until when green maize comes on the market. Remember more than 50% of our maize is produced by these “uneducated villagers” . All we need is diversification interms of cereal products and encourage people not only to depend pa kabuz. Visit Malawi and you will find that therez cassava meal, maize meal, rice etc. And bloggers we voted for RB and let us move on and support him whether u are PF, UPND HP, MMD or indeed independents. Let us blogg on the subject coz u never know who is reading may RB and he may get one point from this blogging.
Can you remember? who said these words, Mulenseka ati nafonka mumenso , imwe mukafonka pamala,Eifi ifyayamba ukuchitika.Find out from KK, they shall be total curlsy
#72.Akapilipili. Why should a “jobless man” have a “family of six” in the 1st place? If you know you’re jobless don’t go on having a family of six, just maintain a family of sex! When u pick up a job then u can have a family of six.Thats how the chinese have developed within the past decades-control of the size of ones family. Now they’re allowing pipo to have more than 1 child per family bcoz their ecomnomy is booming.
INCOMPETENT RB IS BLAMING EVERYTHING BUT HIMSELF. RB is now the time to give foods to the people free of charge. RB was able to give food freely prior to elections, why is it not possible to do so now? Hope RB is awake though!
will continue suffering as long as we do not find a way to accept pipo the way they are, we had a choice some oppted for midalas instead of voting for someone who was energetic and vibrate.
#68, I wouldn’t wish death even on my enemy. Thats being heartless, even a person with a heart of stone is better than not having one.
#22 ‘……. Mr Magande, you assured the nation that the global rise in food prices was not going to affect Zambia. Whats happening now?’
Even if Magande said so, that was reversed by Nyama soyas’ increase in the prices of maize. What can the millers do, reduce the price of mealie meal even if the price of maize is high???
Iwe Peter #14, 15 & 16 Pliz stick to the topic Millers being blamed for mealie meal price hikes ” & not rumor mongering about the Doctor!
Can we please make #1 and #3 the president of Zambia and his vice.
#72, you have no manners. You even buy a bag of mealie meal three times a month.Try buying rice it works and it is cheaper probably.
RB72 should not be expected to change the prices automatically NO.It will take some few days if not weeks or months to help reduce the price some of the commodities in Zed.
Majority of Zedian voted for Rb72 and opposition lost out.
Next time vote for H H, a young man with a normal IQ
You people what do you mean when you say Zambians voted for RB? Remember that 1.9 million people voted and MMD got 718,000 subtract that from 1.9. You will find that over 1 million voters wanted change. So be specific when you say zambians voted for RB. We ruled by a minority President.
ni credit crunch mafala naimwe! vonse ni rb. atase!

People. I am afraid we have a dismal future in Zambia. Now its mealie meal. A blogger argued with me that RB would bring free mealie meal. The reality has dawned. What next?
just wait you will cry,a normal person can not vote for these idots
