Mine suppliers lament reduced mine deals

Share

Mine contractors and suppliers Association of Zambia (MCSAZ) on the Copper belt have lamented over the reduced contracts with renowned Mine Companies following the sharp decline in copper prices on the international Market in the last  two months.

The Association President Farnwell Band told ZANIS in an Interview in Kitwe Wednesday that some mining companies such as Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) had taken an aggressive negative approach in addressing the effects of the low Copper Price on the international market by canceling certain contracts awarded to some suppliers.

He said in certain instances the  Mines were requesting suppliers for a higher discount.

Mr. Banda appealed to the Mining Companies to consider the effects of declined copper prices on an average Zambian Contractor  to ensure that they did not injure and destroy their businesses.

He added that KCM was reviewing Contracts and implementing a reduction in the procurement of local materials from suppliers to accommodate what the Company could afford following the reduction in the price of copper prices from 10,000 dollars per tonne to 4,000 dollars.

He noted that the latest developments at KCM had created a  negative impact on the local Suppliers and called for dialogue between  the company and suppliers.

  1. uko,you will cry time! go farming>> deversify your portifolio else business risk catches up with you and u close down.

  2. RB alimuchibe what is he going to do to make his presidency look good? lelo lelo. I just fell for the many people that not benefited from the brief boom we had.

  3. these same suppliers are moving around with very expensive latest vehicle. sell your cars start farming and food becomes cheaper

  4. people really need to deversify their bussiness every now and then as their is no security in these suply bussinesses, not forgeting that the person who secures you thatsuply contract wants commision all else you wont get paid in time or loose the contract.those are the kind of bussineses pa Z, RB is in for trouble he has to creat some stability and security for the pipo n their bussines

  5. You Suppliers/Contractors have to understand that when things are OK with KCM, you are paid all the monies that you need. Now things are not OK and common sence will prevail.

  6. The lack of innovativeness that we have as Zambians always make us learn the hard way. In Zambia everyone wnats to be a mine supplier just becuase ba neighbour is a supplier. Now that the mine activities are tanking, its a disaster.

  7. These are hard times indeed. As for some suppliers, they have managed to invest in other business portifolios while others have just been buying expensive cars and living lavishly. Its important for the suppliers to understand the diffiulties the mines are passing thru especially in view of the global economic recessions. The lesson at home is that make the best out of times when business is booming so that when in a trough, you would have invested elsewhere to reap something. Also avoid living expensively

  8. whatever the reason these mines have already made more money from us and are just buying time for their selfish motives…RB at work.

  9. Guys read today’s times and see about FQM and retrenching people, kcm is doing the same and so is mopani, our leadership is quiet and ignorant about this whole issue,Sata alilandile tamwaumfwile,he said zambians should benefit from all this and now we are loosing jobs as benefits and not help from the government,we definately will live to regret this, mark my words,we should have just changed government and try someone else

  10. Ba Fanwell Banda is just a mere supplier with one house in Riverside and old model cars. He is a mean man so good if he is not getting any busienss from the Mines. When you tell a supplier to buy a house they say “bushe nkaya skida inganda mu town nangu motoka, so most of them don’t have houses” but have K200m worth of one car.

  11. Its time to diversify bazi ma ndola and take advantage of 50pin fertilizers from RB otherwise you are hearded for hard times bane,

  12. so these chaps dont know that there is a glodal financial crisis. U see this is not time to only read of were to get materials cheaply and sale at 500% profit margins. Zambian business men need to read widely and engage in better risk managemet for their business. This is not time to cry about reduced business. Hw does a business have one product and one customer. What a sham, wen that cvustomer pulls out then that buness is dead. and you acall yourselves bunessmen

  13. I seemz RB is unfortunate. Ubunga abene balunda, People are thretened of loosing their jobs,John Cena Nabalunda nayena. Twalafika kwi naba RB?

  14. We saw it coming. These suppliers have been living larg. They driver the latest models of German cars but are still tenants.Anyway we will keep on buying cars from them, kayili balachipisha.I hear ka 1 Series BMW 2006 model is going at $48 Million somewhere in Kitwe?

  15. Mining companies are business people. They are being prudent in hard times. Even the suppliers would have done the same if they were in their shoes. Period.

  16. I think these suppliers are not business men, they are just traders. They need to acquire business managment skills.

  17. Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen? Go to Kitwe and witness for yourself the mismatch between the amount of money owned and the owner. Lets not only talk about corruption when it involves government officials, these suppliers are extremely corrupt. Within a short time, a chap who never even went as far as G12 starts getting fat, weight lifting, muscles T-shirts and now….. a 2008 ML320 (BMW). Where on earth? The fact that we have no relatives in the mines does not mean that we should be exploited. No wonder they pack in the middle of the road and start washing the car!

  18. Well, this is where skills become important. When they are clinching the deals, they meet in secrete lodges and wine. When things turn sour, they want the whole country to know. I am sure if the whole country stood up to support their cry they would be the happiest people, but when you meet on the road (you in a sprinter and them in a 2007 Benz E320)thats when they blast the music hard polluting the air and not considering your rights. If you were together at school and you were more intelligent, they give you as an example of how ‘useless’ school is. Wait and See!

  19. wat dailogue Banda do u want, chaps just sale your Hammers and other fancy cars u hav start farming do u think Zambian prices shud go up while global prices hav gone down. Mwanya u will see

  20. I wonder who these guyz think they are? mourning for what?Looking at the alogance they display no one can dare help them even ICHIBWATO CANT HELP.#29 U r right, need say more?

  21. Gents stop braging not o suppliers ar G 9s infact we a good number were at unza now run co. We must be mo progressive & focus on solutions. Supplier make the mines run& offer 45daz credit. The actually contribute to development&tax. If u choze a collora its our fault. Its hard work mwana

  22. dont worry guys the copper prices will be back to normal in may.
we will be back on wheels. just pack all the hummers, like i did .lets go back to driving our wives car, ie the benz, bmw and cryslers.

  23. Zwide

Business is about ups en downs.I agree, one shld save for rainy days.A car is one’s choice en level of personal satisfaction.Rewards of hard work is to aquire bane.

  24. Most Zambian suppliers I have seen are myopic poor planners who after exorbitantly pricing their goods do not want to think that one day things might just be different and take measures to see them thru the hard times. They can at the same time(as they are doing their supply business)invest in something that does not necessarily depend on the mines. They just waste their money on unnecessary luxuries that they are not even worthy. But what can we say? They are former miners who only believe in the mines.
