ZESCO power failure sends Mufulira town in water crisis

Share

-A Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation, ZESCO, power failure at Kafue Water Plant in Mufulira has created a water crisis affecting 50 per cent of the areas serviced by Mulonga Water and Sewerage Company.

Mulonga Water and Sewerage Company divisional Manager, Chris Chilekwa, told ZANIS that the company has not been able to pump water to the afftected areas in the last 48 hours due to non availability of electric power supply.

Mr Chilekwa said operations at Kafue river water plant were grounded to a halt on Monday evening.

Residents in the affected areas are trekking to former mine township serviced areas to fetch the commodity.

Mr Chilekwa said Mulonga will provide water in drums for the health institutions as a measure to cushion the impact.

The affected areas include Fairview, town centre, Kamuchanga, Chibolya and Eastlea.

Kamuchanga General Hospital and some clinics are among the affected public institutions.

And ZESCO branch manager, Arnold Nguni, said the power utility company suspect that a Zesco cable that feed Mulonga water substation at Kafue water works could have caused the fault at the water plant.

Mr. Nguni, who could not indicate when the situation will normalize, stated that workers have already been dispatched to Kafue to diagnose the fault.

He, however, said heavy rains the district experienced last night has hampered the works at Kafue.

Sad for Mufulilans, but most residents across the country are now used to fetching water from distant places due to failure to supply water properly by the concern offices undeer our GRZ management. Shame, especially that we are now 44 yrs old as a country and one Nation.

  2. Mr Nguni gives no hope to the muf residents. he is not even sure what caused the problem and its been 48hrs! I truely hope they rectify the situation and possibly, Zesco be more efficient.

  3. Bwezani at work. Don’t expect much from MMD. Mwalya Mweka Daddy. This group will keep benefitting while the rest feel the crunch. Now they have new salaries.

  4. As much as Zesco is to blame these strategic organisations should have high-powered standby generators, it’s not like this was a surprise to them. Failing to plan is planning to fail!

  5. ZESCO needs an urgent overhaul of its staff. They are too slow to react to ermegencies.I cant imagine 5 residential areas without water for more than 48 hrs. Ng,uni cant even render an oppology for the inconvenience his company has caused to the affected residents and for endangering thier lives especially that we are in a Cholera period. KAYA.

Blimey! So if rains do not stop for another 14 days then nothing will be done? Thank God Zambia has good weather generally. Is he saying the company has no capacity to carry on working through bad weather?

Going without electricity and water has become so normal that people savour moments they have runnig water and electrity!

    Our country is a joke!

  7. sex is no longer intereting because we are forced to do it in the dark now. ZESCO , waz up, we need to liven up our wonderful lives wit you malaiti.
    sisala, pliz assist

  8. i’ve always wondered why party cadres and dancing men and women see off the president when he is leaving for a foreign land.
why party cadres in the first place? isn’t this man going out there to represent all zambians regardless of political affiliation?

this practice really must be stopped. wouldn’t it be enough to have just a few ministers there to see their boss off?
and why are the foreign diplomats also herded off to the airport to receiving him on his return?

someone please explain. it really baffles me.

  9. #12.You are right, ifyabututufye.l equally dont understand why party cadres should see the President off instead of other Government Officials.

  10. Sisala, just admit that you have failed to run zesco. even this load shedding business of yours doesn’t make sense coz when zesco shuts down certain area, the lines or areas that reamain live keep tripping coz of receiving high supply you might aswell shut down the whole country. you are really a big failure ba Sisala.
