Govt. to go ahead with hotel construction at UNZA, Hone

Share

Government has maintained its pledge of constructing hostels at the University of Zambia (UNZA) and Evelyn Hone College (EHC) in Lusaka despite withdrawing from the hosting of the 2011 All African Games.

Youth Sports and Child Development Minister Kenneth Chipungu told ZANIS in Lusaka today that government will continue with the project of constructing hostels at the two institutions of tertiary education.

Mr. Chipungu said this was because government was committed to improving infrastructure at the institutions of higher education.

He said government was committed and has goodwill to ensure that infrastructure at colleges and universities was developed and improved in the country.

He said the contractors for building hostels at UNZA and Evelyn Hone College were already on site, adding that construction works have since started.

Mr. Chipungu was hopeful that the construction works would be completed within the stipulated time before 2011.

Meanwhile All Africa Games Organizing Committee Director General, David Diangamo, also confirmed that government will go ahead with the construction of the hostels at the institutions.

Mr. Diangamo however said his committee was facilitating the handover of information to responsible ministries and departments to ensure that the construction of hostels is not halted.

He said the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education have since been tasked to continue with the construction of the hostels.

University of Zambia and Evelyn Hone College were some of the institutions that would have new hostels constructed and old ones improvement in order to accommodate delegates to 2011 All Africa Games.

A fortnight ago, the Zambia government withdrew from hosting All Africa Games in 2011 citing financial constraints as the main reason for dropping the offer.

  1. That’s the news we want to hear. Let’s hope it materialises because its long overdue. Hopefully they won’t stop and blame the credit crunch.

  2. They will only be finished after the 2011.or probabbly it will be used for political milage for the 2011 election, lets wait and see and give a benefit of doubt.

  3. Zoe I agree with you! It seems that all these lodges and hotels are mostly being occupied by adulterers in search for five minutes to consumate! I think they need to approach this carefully! Also understandably unis need places to accomodate students but what are the standards of these institutes generally; they shouldn’t focus on housing but also materials such as books, computers, and desks. 😕

You have already started with the conspiracy theories and yet you are the same people that cry out for development all the time on this blog.

Well this is development. Can you please GROW UP!!!

  5. Ala mwandi Zoe, Naine nachitiina. Hotel??? Anyways, what Zambia needs is institutions of Higher learning in all the provinces. Notjust these TEVET collages, but Universities. I know it may not happen with this guy but if we had a serious collage or uni every 5 or so yrs, that would really be development.

  6. Number 12, i agree with u. The UNZA library is BIG but full of outdated material, stuff that was used in the Kaunda era, most of the books are literally tearing apart and we had to chance the relatively good ones at the ‘short loan’ Since the course i was doing was relatively new to UNZA, we had to get most of our data from the internet or a college in Kamwala called ZAMISE which specialises in special ed. The UNZA Lib only has 10 computers to cater for the entire unversity, this is pathetic guys! This is real and sad!

  7. Why build hotels at UNZA and at Evelyn Hone College instead of sports infrastracture and other social amenities? This is another misappropriation of priorities! Don’t we have enough hotels, motels and countless lodges in Lusaka? UNZA and Evelyn Hone are big institutions that should have sports arenas like swimming pools, gyms , just to mention a few! Im sure these hotels will be used all for wrong purposes – banging students!

  8. LT “Govt. to go ahead with hotel construction at UNZA, Hone” and “Government has maintained its pledge of constructing hostels at the University of Zambia (UNZA) and Evelyn Hone College (EHC) in Lusaka despite withdrawing from the hosting of the 2011 All African Games” do not correlate.

Was this done on purpose. However, the news is welcome and I am hoping you will succeed.

  9. Sorry bloggers! I can’t make out what they mean here, is it hotels or hostels? The title says hotels and the story mentions hostels.

  10. **==Bushe development ninshi niku Lusaka fye kweka? Twasuka twapilamo nokupila mo! Where are we gonna get the funds to make other towns and things level with Lusaka.

Anyhow, we are NOT moved yet but such sentiments. After all there’s too much :-@ in our ruling party. Remember Magande telling us that Zambia WILL NOT be affected by the world economic issues as we have more that enough reserves. We are the funds, now the a kwach is 5025 against a US Dolla?

  11. thats a simple error that everyboby shud understand ….. why wud govt build hotels at Uni and Evelyn? And the body of the article says it all …. its hostels bakwetu!

  12. THE GOVT SHOULD BE BUILDING HOTELS AT LAKE BANGWEULU BEACHES. AND NOT ONLY HOTELS BUT ALSO LEISURE FACILITIES. IF ANYONE IS IN DOUBT, PLEASE, GOOGLE LAKE BANGWEULU BEACHES AND TELL ME IF IT IS COMPARABLE TO ANY NATURAL BEACH YOU HAVE EVER SEEN IN YOUR LIFE. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT OTHER BEACHES YOU HAVE BEEN TO ARE DEVELOPED AND THEREFORE, MAKING BILLIONS OF DOLLARS. ITS A PITY ZAMBIA IS POOR BY CHOICE.

  13. Anyone remember Dag Harmaskjoeld? I may have spelt it wrongly,…but the moral being,…..you will be lucky to get two or even three rooms finished.

Where is the rebuilt stadium? It has now been over 20 years!!!!

    Lies!!!

  14. hello mwechalo,

I am now off work let me interact with u. How are u yakumboyo, sweet thagh, sarah…the rest!!!!!

yes this is good news indeed. But we want the building to finsh before 2011 so that there is no any capitaöisation on it. But to tell you the thruth it will drag untill 2011. We know this guys very well. any way lets keep our fingers closed.

  15. I agree with you Kambongolo that we should keep our fingers crossed.
Being the Zambia we know someone will come up a story that someone chewed the money.
Am I proud to be Zambian? Thats the question I have been asking myself all day.

  16. guys you are so deaf i can’t believe some of you have flags showing that you are not in zed.

please in the current economic situation hostels is a BAD investment, considering that the hostels project was tied to 2011 all africa games.

it is just a ploy to reduce tensions especially from our effective students.

please guys we have past this stage to politics of poverty.

nothing is going to happen about these hostels and that is the harsh reality.sorry.

  17. We have enough hotels but not enough Universities or colleges, why not channel those funds to building a new university of college to offer further education to numerous G12 graduates? Its not rocket science but Zambia needs another proper institute of higher learning

  18. #39 SARA how many times are you going to cross your fingers and hope while you are manipulated? well you are zambian.wake up and give yourself a number of how times someone should explain to you after have nothing to do with that person.

it’s called limits. and everyperson should have these lest you are taken for granted.

  19. The webmaster at Lusakatimes is very sloppy getting fundamental spellings wrong. Hostels and Hotels are not one and the same. Webmaster you should proof read your articles before posting them because you seem to be a copy and paste journalist. Just yesterday you tyolad ‘chizungu@ ati attracking.

  20. #43 SARAH. I AM A VERY PROUD ZAMBIANS. THERE ARE MANY THINGS TO BE PROUD OF BEING ZAMBIAN. WE ARE PEACE-LOVING AND A BROTHER/SISTER’S KEEPER. NORMALLY, WE PUT HUMAN LIFE IN FRONT OF EVERYTHING. WE SHOULD BE PROUD THAT ALMOST ALL OUR NEIGHBOURS GOT INDEPENDENCE BECAUSE OF OUR CARING NATURE. EVEN THOSE WHO ALREADY ARE INDEPENDENT SEEK REFUGE WHENEVER THERE IS TROUBLE IN THEIR LANDS. WE ARE EXTREMELY POOR BUT WE CAN AFFORD TO LOOK AFTER ANY TROUBLED NATIONAL. WITHOUT OUR PATIENCE IT WOULD HAVE TAKEN A BOER MUCH LONGER TO FREE OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN SOUTH AFRICA. ALTHOUGH OUR POLITICIANS ARE BUNKCRAPTY IN MIND ORDINARY ZAMBIANS ARE BRAIN AND INTELLIGENT…

  21. …ZAMBIA HAS MORE THAN 73 LANGUAGES-THATS SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF. SOME COUNTRIES HAVE ONLY TWO OR A FEW AND THEY ARE TROUBLED. ZAMBIA IS ENDOWED WITH BEAUTIFULLY LOVING AND LOVABLE PEOPLE, MINUS POLITICAL RULERS. ZAMBIA IS ALSO ENDOWED WITH NATURAL RESOURCES YOU MAY THINK OF. ZAMBIA IS ALMOST 100% A FERTILE LAND WITH MORE THAN 40% SHARE OF FRESH WATER IN THE SOUTHERN REGION OF AFRICA. ZAMBIA HAS A MODERATE TEMPERATURE. THATS WHY IT IS NICKNAMED-AIR-CONDITIONED COUNTRY. AS A RESULT OF 73 LANGUAGES ZAMBIA IS DIVERSE IN CULTURE-WHICH WE ARE NOT, UNFORTUNATELY PROUD OF, BUT CAN USE TO OUR ADVANTAGE. THERE ARE SO MANY REASONS TO BE PROUD OF ZAMBIA. YOU CAN THINK OF OTHERS, TOO.

  22. #49 Sarah, am a bit disappointed that you had to wait for someone (Peter in this case) to outline reasons why one should be proud to be Zambian before you could throw your weight behind your country. Like Peter said, we are a very unique nation and there are few out there that can match our humble mother Zambia. Be proud and hold your head high at all times. We all know politicians mess things for us but that should not dent our total love for our nation. VIVA ZED!!

  23. LT your headline is talking about construction of Hotels at UNZA and Evelyn Hone but suprising your story is talking about hostels. Please clarify.

  24. Instead of lusakatimes.com, this website should have been named copyandpaste.com bcoz that’s all LT does. The worst thing though is that they are bad at doing their job: Imagine failing to copy and paste, yaba ba LT.

  25. DONORS have pledged to fulfill their budgetary commitments in next year’s Budget despite the global financial crisis, Finance and National Planning Minister, Situmbeko Musokotwane has said.
Dr Musokotwane said on the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) television programme, “National Watch” monitored yesterday that donors contributed 25 per cent of Zambia’s national Budget.A Nation of Beggars when are we going to grow and stand on our own.The Americans, the British owe us nothing and they are not required to fulfill their commitment.

  26. #47 and 48. BRILLIANT. I AM A VERY PROUD ZAMBIAN. I HAVE NOT TRAVELLED MUCH. I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO EUROPE, BUT I HAVE TRAVELLED TO MOST AFRICAN COUNTRIES. ZAMBIANS ARE OUTSTANDING IN SO MANY WAYS. OUR ACCENT IS MUCH, MUCH BETTER. ZAMBIANS ARE SMART. THEY DRESS WELL. YOU CAN RECOGNISE A ZAMBIAN FROM AFAR…..HER/HIS SMILE……….YOU CAN GO ON AND ON AND ON.

BE PROUD TO BE ZAMBIAN…………..It only becomes embarassing when our politicians start yapping and doing strange things

  27. LT, I have noticed that contributors are constantly reminding you to check your spellings and grammar. I think their advice has fallen on deaf ears as you keep on making the same mistakes. How do you write “hotel” instead of hostel and not notice your error? Get a bit more serious or you’ll lose your stamina

  28. Instead of building these so called hostels, let the Govt send money to students abroad. its waste of money to build a hostel at hon. chi college fye.

  29. Guys guys guys!!! Maybe LT is to blame for not counter checking or proof reading their stories before they upload them onto the site. Its Hostels!!! Not hotels. These should have been used to accomodate the athletes that should have come for the All Africa Games, but now since the work is already in progress (you see it when you go to EH), let it be completed and these will be handed over to management of these institutions for use by their students. I think, lets not play politics but we can now talk about transparency. We should n’t hear of misappropriation and misuse of allocated funds. Let them complete these hostels, because its about time.

    Riders!!

  30. CONAKRY, Guinea – A group calling itself the National Council for Democracy has announced that Guinea’s government has been dissolved.

In what appears to be a coup d’etat, a spokesman appeared on TV Tuesday wearing a military uniform and read the statement saying the government, including the constitution, courts and the parliament had been dissolved. He did not state his name or his rank.

The announcement comes just six hours after officials declared the death of Guinea’s dictator, Lansana Conte. The constitution calls for the president of the National Assembly to be sworn in as the country’s next president.

  31. Sorry folks, for me the argument is always the same.
Why build new hostels when they are failing to maintain the existing ones. We seem to always demand more(new) Universities, new stadia, etc, but the old ones are falling apart. Instead of spreading our little financial resources thin, its better to have fewer but high quality institutions.

  32. It appears to some bloggers here, its a matter of ‘HEADS I WIN, TAILS YOU LOSE! Need I elaborate? As one Zambian music virtuoso once sang ‘Nebo nshiwamya eeh’. Sounds familiar? Thats Zambians for you.

  33. Its actualy Hostels and not Hotels according to my understanding. The kind of reporting we have in Zambia, much needs to be desired where the heading mentions something different from the passege! Wafya pa Zed.

  34. Now I understand. I was almost wondering what the Govt is upto to build hotels at the two institutions. Nevertheless its a welcome idea. The condition of the hostels of the two institutions is pathetic.

  35. #60, Walufyanya although we are in the same boat. Those are Educational institutions too and its time government paid them the attention they deserve

  37. #60 Point of correction, you are a backward chap who can not appreciate what Evelyn hone has done for some of us. As i’m telling you, i’m one IT guru , i do Software Dev for Siemens-SA, they employed me based on my qualifications from Hone and of course my track record.. Some of you so called Degree holders sit down in your chair and expect respect, those days are gone, Industrial Standards require your perfomance, they gauge you, mule enda first, expose your selves, in Bemba they say Umwana ashenda atasha nina ukunaya ubwali.. In short i really apprecaite what hone did for me..

  38. Can someone tell me what is wrong with Coppernet internet service since last Tuesday (a week ago). You can call and call and no one seems to react, technicians are supposed to come, but have not shown up yet. I am a customer who is paying a lot of money for this service that is “like shooting yourself in the foot” to stay with their telephone slogan. Please let me know if other people are experiencing this also. International addresses are very slow to reach, only local addresses work – also slow. They said it is the Satellite one day, one day it’s the base station at Mulungushi, the next day it is something else. Why pay over 500,000.00 Kwacha for a service that is a non service….????

  39. Proud to Zambian? I thought the politicians are Zambians as well.
People here seem to be distinguishing between the ‘nice friendly
    Zambians’ and the ‘Politicians’.

  40. I know that others are also experiencing difficulties with their coppernet internet connection lately. And adding to this the prices have been raised from January 1, 2009. No problem with this as long as the service is working. But a price increase with a non existing service by the service provider? I also want to change to a different provider. Any recommendations?

  43. So finally govt has money to construct hotels amd yet they haven’t had money to renovate UNZA and Evelyn Hone students’ accommodation. SICKENING is the word that comes to mind.

I pray to GOD that if I win the lottery because I swear if it’s the last thing that I do before I die, I’ll renovate UNZA, Ridegway Campus and Evelyn Hone accommodation. The infrastructure of these places is phenomenal all it needs is a bit of work. At least govt is honest syaing they will not manage. But hotels instead of renovating hostels (or was that another typo.

People in the west would die to have surroundings such as Goma Lakes. I really love Zed and Lusaka!
