ZACA commends ERB, Chimanga Changa for price reduction

Share

The Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has urged the bus operators and public transporters to immediately reduce bus fares for both domestic and long distance travellers to give the benefits fuel price reduction by the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) yesterday.

And ZACA has also commended Chimanga Changa Milling for reducing mealie –meal prices.

ZACA Programme Officer, Precious Zulu, told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that the reduction in fuel pump price should benefit the consumers.

Ms. Zulu said the fuel increase has on many times been blamed for triggering the increased price of essential goods and services, adding that they now expect the same to happen after the reduction.

“Fuel increase sthe cost of production but now that there is a reduction the consumers need to see that prices of goods and services are reduced,” she said.

She also said what Chimanga Changa has done in reducing the price of the staple food should be commended, adding that other millers should emulate the company and reduce the price of the staple food.

Ms. Zulu said she expect the price of goods and services to be reduced this feastive season.

Meanwhile Ms. Zulu said her organization wants to work with other consumer protection bodies and agents like the Zambia Police Service, Zambia Weights and Measures Agency and Health Inspectors to stop companies selling underweight products.

she said her organization has received complaints from consumers that some retail outlets are selling underweight products.

She also disclosed that ZACA will soon conduct the inspection and investigations in the market due to the rampant cheating of consumers by outlets.

Ms. Zulu revealed the Zambia Weights and Measures Agency has since taken Simba Milling to court for selling underweight products.

  1. lets hope its not like what chiluba did to chani fisheries. Cheating dull Zambians that Chani had reduced mealie meal price and yet it was not the case. Chimanga changa tell us the truth…if you come to complain that you want money from govt as chani wants its money will beat you. Be serious now ..you are dealing with new breed of Zambians. If they are using you please refuse it. However if you have done it with good will to poor Zambians, congrats and get my pat. :)>-:)>-:)>-

  6. President Lansana Conte’s death spells the end of years of misrule in Guinea. When is the misrule of Zambia coming to an end? :-?:-?:-?

  7. This is rubbish. They have announced a price reduction in petroleum products, but do they really know that most of the filling stations are giving lame excuses like we are yet to adjust the dispensers to the new price or the current stock was bought at a much higher price. When the increase is announced pump prices change at midnight without arguments of adjusting the pumps and old stock issue coming into play. It is this practice of mandated boards like ERB failing to bite and be felt which has let down Zambia. Law enforcers are always too lethargic to act, how do you expect citizens to respect the law. Its time law enforcers became relevant if we are to move ahead as a nation. ERB wake up.

  8. This very ZACA organisation, do they understand what they are supposed to be doing or its just to be seen that they exist. Where has the vigilantism of exposing, picketing and whistle blowing on organisations that are not meeting consumer minimum services expectations. They should constantly expose and bring into the lime light, organisations which are exploiting cunsermers of goods and services with a view to making cunsumers enjoy the money worth the services and goods paid for. But what do we see, they only come into view to praise sing initiatives of a miller when he reacts to the situation out of their own accord. Its ZACA who should be forcing the reductions vigorously.

  13. How much have fuel prices reduced. Please help me know. What was the rationale. I thought we were told that Indeni cant offload fuel because the OMCs have filled them with imports. Has the situation changed, or is it an artificial reduction by Govt ie not based on business fundamentals.

  14. I see from other media that fuel has been reduced by 24% I hope Govt and ERB have done their maths well. Otherwise Tazama may end up in financial problems. This is a huge reduction. ZMK has depreciated. How do they hope to fund the letters of credit they used to finance the crude oil import, in US dollars. People should ask why Zimoil and Znoc ended accruing hude debts. Also ask why Indeni has accrued huge debts and hence Govt using Tazama to import. Very soon Tazam will accrue huge debts. Who else will Govt use for their politically motivated crude oil imports. The OMCs have refused to participate in crude oil imports because of the financial risks involved. The Govt need to come clean.

  15. Tazama has already warned that some dollar repayments are about to be due and they are not selling refined fuel fast enough as OMCs have clogged up the sysytem with imports. Now couple that with a politically motivated price reduction, Tazama may be forced to borrow at high interest to honour its obligations. Who will pay for the interest, will it be passed on to consumers through price increases? If Tazama fails, who else will accept to take on crude oil importation. I have worked in this business I know the players well – Tazama, Indeni and OMCs. OMCs are shrewed business entities. theur parent companies will not allow them to take on unnecessary risks. Our Govt is inept.

  16. The biggest risk area in crude oil imports is financial. Normally a tender is offered to a preferred bidder to supply the crude oil. But you have to pay for it. You do this through letters of credit. A bank or banks offer you credit by which you import the crude oil and pay back the money with interest at agreed dates. You interest rate will depend on your credit worthiness. Often the penalties for defaulting are severe. From my experience, it is very easy to make a loss from crude imports in Zambia. This is because the retail price is fixed by Govt/ERB, in ZMK. ZMK depreciation screws you. The solution is to run this business economically. But Govt does not allow it for political reasons.

  18. The OMC are happy that they are shielded from the forex risk by the importing entity – be it Zimoil, Znoc, Indeni or Tazama. OMCs operate in ZMK so they can nicely make a steady predicatable profit. Forex rates have little effect on their operations, except on what they remit to their parent companies. Also they can borrow in ZMK and pay back in ZMK.

But the company importing crude oil must borrow in US dollars and pay back in US$! They must also pay for normally acceptable losses at sea, in Tazama pipelines, at Indeni refinery and in storage. Delays in stock movements due to accidents, fires etc are also costly. So many risks are borne by the crude oil importer.

  19. Well I rest my case. I Wish you well fellow Zambians. I just hope the Govt knows what they are doing. Otherwise, brace yourselves for a short-lived fuel price reduction. Pay more attention to what experts are saying, not Govt or ERB. They are suckers.

    Merry Christmas.

  20. FUEL IS SUPPOSED TO BE K3000 PER LITRE.. OIL HAS DROPPED FROM $160 TO $40… WHEN IT WAS $160, FUEL WAS 10PIN.. OIL HAS DROPPED BY 75% AND SO SHOULD FUEL.. IT MUST BE K2500… ERB AND GOVERNMENT ARE USELESS..! ATASE!!!
