Inciting defence forces is treasonable , Mpombo

Share

Defense Minister, George Mpombo, says politicians inciting the defense forces are committing a treasonable offence.

And Mr Mpombo revealed that government has raised K20 billion to build housing units for defense forces.

Mr Mpombo, who reiterated President Rupiah Banda’s advise to politicians to desist from provoking ‘the men and women in uniform’ said security issues should be separated from politics.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Mpombo regretted that some politicians want to paint a picture that government is doing nothing to address the needs of the defense wings.

He pointed out that politicians should not spread their tentacles of confusion in the defense force saying there should be limits in politics.

“We must guide our peace jealously. Zambia has been sending Peace Keepers to countries devastated by wars some of which are caused by careless politicians. Politicians should not masquerade as irresponsible citizens by issuing inflammatory statements,” he warned.

He said election time is over and people should settle down and work for the well being of the country.

Mr. Mpombo wondered why some politicians are attacking President Banda on trivial issues saying the detractors will not divert President Banda and his Cabinet’s plan and focus for the country.

“We are committed to the well being of the defense Forces and the country will be run accordingly,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mpombo said government released K20 billion at the end of last year to build houses for the defense security.

He explained that construction work will start as soon as possible saying government is not happy to see members of the defense wing living among civilians.

He said government is further contemplating revive the Builders Brigade in all wings of the defense force so that the construction work can be done well and on time.

Mr. Mpombo emphasized that government wants to be pro-active and would like to see a positive change in the well being of men and women in uniform.

  1. You cannot incite defence forces, they are disciplined only to take orders from their superiors. It’s the misguided chibuku mabzun eating Pf youths that need to be put in check not soldiers

  2. Politicians like other citizens must be allowed to speak about any area of society which they feel is being left out,in terms of development even if it’s the defence. It’s freedom of speech as long political leaders do not advocate for violence, I see no problem. I am proud of my country,we have not had any war since independence. Keep it up, fwe bena Zambia twali temwana:)>-:)>-:d/:d/

  3. These MMD official are scared little muppets, to the point of running away from their own shadows. Who is inflaming the situation, if not you, Mpombo and crew. Is it the lack of well defined rights the people are denied, that once an opposition cadre points out abuse, you cry foul, in the name of maintaining peace. My foot!!! Peace is our way of life, so give us a break MMD!!. Till tomoro, Zed shall forever be peaceful. Viva Zambia!!

  4. Muntunza ati shani kabili,am stuk in perth, coz the passport issue plus these western guys don’t let me sell my merchandise by the roadblocks.Lets us hook up
    :d/

  5. From what I hear the defence guys are annoyed with the continued service of old generals who are on so-called contracts. I can smell kama treason case manje manje. This issue is H.O.T LT ! Morning bloggers !!

  6. I don’t think the armed forces would be incited by loose talk. There is nothing treasonable about pointing out the government’s failures. What happened to freedom of speech?

Plunging the nation into an unnecessary fuel crisis like Mpombo did in 2005 is closer to treason!

  7. #2. Right, you claim Mpombo does not know what he is talking about. What would he have said, according to you,as he is the Minister of Defence? Let’s hear from you.

  8. Good Morning Everyone!!

Mr mpombo, your boss already addressed this issue.Where were you when RB was addressing the defence Chiefs?. I thought by virtue of you being Defence Minister were present?Anyway, your continued plea to the defence personnel reveals that you are really sfraid of your own shadows and the Generals are laughing their lungs out but then they are disciplined Mr Mpombo,Just do your job and take good care of them.

  9. # 20, he would have said, “Hello folks’ this is George and I can assure you everything is under control. We are deploying so many army trucks to fight cholera by removing the garbage from the streets of Zambia since there is no war right now”

    Makes more sense doesn’t it?

  10. If Mpombo ist talking about the opposition then he himself is wrong. The only way to get govt moving is to trigger sensitive issues. Democracy at hand!! Iwe Mpombo relax and make sure those in Uniform (Even Primary and Sec Sch goers) get a better future

  11. Mr.Minister d*a*mn your lip service it is time you honored our men and women in uniform. These men and women sacrificed to defend our freedom,Building them houses doesn’t go far enough what about their retirement, health, the education of their children.we are tired of empty speeches full of sh*it.

  12. George Im-Mpombo is my role model of what a useless minister should be like.It is him who should be charged for treason for being careless and giving kokai statements about the army.
when things are not right in the barracks, we the zambians can comment cause it is us they protect not just Mpombo. There is nothing sacred about the men in uniforms for Mpombo to be the only annoited to speak about them. ala. The army should open fire at Mpombo to keep him quite. ka mulongoti has at least stopped talking too much and funny Teta is slowly sobbering up!

  13. Mpombo and RB are refering to Sata’s comment in Saturday’s post newspaper that the govt has extended the contacts of old soldiers who are due to retire and as a result disadvantaging the young folks who expect to be promoted. Sata is right in a way but we need to find out why RB is extending the contracts of the old folks(is it because he needs men of his generation at the top or is it that he does not trust the young folks yet and is trying to buy time to enable him identify the ones he can trust?)

  14. Mpombo is confused also. Goodmorning everyone, hope you enjoyed your weekends.(for soccer fans, did you see man utd yesterday? the boy are bad news)

  15. This Lusaka times thing is just a government propaganda machine. Why does it just post stories written by Zambia News and Information services (ZANIS), a government department? All the stories are ZANIS. This is a good way to keep you aware of government programs but you think you are being critical by your comments. The truth is that you are getting the information from government and they are happy.

  16. #31. Chinda, terrific observation. If LT has enough resources to send cameramen on RB’s tour of Mfuwe and Kasaba Bay, they should be able to bring a wide coverage of news across the country. ZANIS is heavily censored news. LT should also explain why they do not present discussion items from independent media such as THE POST. We are in a democracy, and we deserve free flow of imformation.

  17. If anything, Mpombo is the one inciting the defense forces! What is he talking about? these are trained men and women aho know where to get there instructions from. Just because they salute for him should make him think that they are useless! 😕

  18. Mpombo is the one who is insighting the defence forces. Abavula bongo, he is just giving them ideas. Does he think that the peace that we enjoy in Zed is from without. Zambians are naturally a peace people, so are the defence forces – they are Zambians.

  19. I do thank God that our Army personnel are dedicated to their service, despite the wrong systems that we have in place which do not promote democracy. By this I mean institutions do not function to the expectation of majority Zambians. Its a personalised system as compared to an institutionalised system.

Once again Keep protecting the Land, from Kaputa to Kabompo, Katete to Kalabo and indeed the entire Zambia. As the children of Isreal where helped so are we going to recieve help for mother Zambia. To President RB, just rule wisely you are well protected, we do include you in our prayers night and day. Just as God Almighty brought you to State House, the same God will bring us happiness. [-o<

  20. Ba Mpombo nefimyefu fyabo. He is another burden to the tax payers. He doesnt even understand what he is talking about.Mpombo do you know the law? Or you just want to please RB.This man can even kiss RB,s Feet and wipe them with his tears. The calibre of mmd ministers leaves much to be desired.Ba Munkombwe balya, are you people serious with our country? Intelligentier, uichindike waumfwa.Inga waikuta ubwali no musalu ikala zi.Rashid Jones i felt bad yesterday my team Chelsea lost to a useless kama small club i have even forgotten the name of that ka team.If it was liverpool i would have understood. Not that ka small team where Ronald plays, what do you even call that ka club.

  21. #40 Anonymous- They think they own us. They remind me of Alex Kamalondo. Oh God you should have seen how desperate he looked when Unip lost. MHRP

  22. Anoymouse

Ba mudala, benifye bwino. Am sorry for that bashing yesterday. That great team you are afraid to mention is called MANCHESTER UNITED, The world club champions, the European Champions and last but not the least, the English league champions!!
Once again, My deepest sympathy on your bashing yesterday. I hope we can still remain friends? :)>-

  23. Ba Mpombo (this name nayo!!)

Boot licking is bad. You have so much to do as defence minister instead of inciting our men and women in uniform. Chibi ba mudala. Our lads are suffering peacefully and there is no need for all that talk. What are you up to? 😕

  24. On #40,i meant to say he can kiss RB,s feet and wipe them with his beads. This Mpompo can do anything to protect his job. Ba Moze am a die hard chelsea fun. Yesterday we were beaten 3-0 by a ka useless team.I have even forgotten the name of that ka team.

  25. Mr minister it is sad if that is the case. However, you should continue performing by developing the nation and face the economic challenges.

  26. Guys sometimes i get amazed that you can have a minuister who is so scruffy like Mpombo addressing issues he understands from his dirty blankets, the fiool keeps parroting what his president says, he even had the guts to call for a press confrerence on sterile information are people in uniform not people afterall.Grow up!!!

  27. Ba Mpombo shuwa! Firstly, your job is that of an administrator. You are their to make sure monies move from banobe ba ku finance, sign doc etc. Your boss is the commander in chief, you have no rank. Personally, I live in fear because you have been maintained ku defense mudala. You are employed to provide the necessary logistics that ensure MY security. As minister of energy, a less complex logistical job, you brought Zambia to its knees during the fuel crisis. Now you are BA BIG WIG DEFENSE. How do you sleep at night? I don’t. :-ss

  28. The minister must be specific. He should not be afraid of stating facts and mentioning the culprits. Otherwise people will take it that it is the usual fishing of Zambian ruling party politicians.

Should we interpret these statements by the president and his minister of defence as signs that things are not right in some quarters and are spending sleepless nights because of fear of something?

  29. #44, I am a MAN U fan. Yesterday we bashed a ka small useless team, I cant even remember the name. All I remember is that this Ka Team was in blue, some teams need to be sold to Herve Renard so that he can finish them off properly.

  30. The Defence forces in Zambia are very disciplined and patient but that should not be taken for granted. There is nothing wrong about political party leaders talking about their plight because these guys dont have a union remember? and their commanders in most cases do not talk for them because themselves are comfortable. I cant see any treason in that and please Mpombo SHAVE that chin you look too dirty.

  31. ba george balikwata umwenso, nisotambe! first he must clean up his chin, have a decent hair cut and fire the seniot officer on contract… in that order. after which he must go ahead and construct those houses he is talking about. how long have we been seeing amasoja mu komboni? he wants to placate who by saying they have managed to secure some money for the construction of houses? these soldiers have been staying in squaller for too long…they are bound to react, y’know. so let george clean up his act and get the job done… or else…

  32. # 60, the language in Zambia is money dull or brilliant infact to be honest with you right now if you are brilliant thats perfect recipe for rejection by the non-performaers. So be cool, play it dumb!!!

  33. #60 & 62. Ni famous family tree mudala. While its wrong to talk ill of those in who have passed on, legacy of LPM was the family tree that this man came from.

  34. #23 (Real Brain), You made me laugh! And true indeed, that sounds more sensible for Mpombo to talk the way you said he should have done than make these unwarranted threats of treason.

  35. Guard your passports ‘JEALOUSLY’
    Guard your peace ‘Jealously’
WHAT NEXT SHOULD WE GUARD….JEALOUSLY :-?:-?:-?
whats with the jealously is this the new catch phrase pa zed, pliz sini funa ku salila/:)8-|8-|8-|

  36. chi Mpombo look at him from a former headmaster to a useless minister just look at his beads like the late rebel leader Jonas Savimbi of Angola.RB wy keep such ministers who are in he rebel lines of Savimbiof Angola and Fode Sanko of Serie Leone.

  37. #23 If you think that the Army is there to pick up your cholera sheet, you are digging wrong hole ! And I can assure you that the army will never degraded to such levels….we also have degrees.

  38. Mpombo shut up and do your work. You are turning yourself into a yapping machine. You should be talking about the porous Zambian borders where smuggling is rampant.

Actually what you are doing is even treasonable because you are robbing Zambians of their millions in tax payers’ money in uttering pure nonsensical and irrelevant verbatims meant for trush cans.

Iam out to check on any developments concerning this terror crusade here in Israel. I mean the fanatical hamas or hizbollah……..

  39. Munyono, but boyi taumfwa.Wa chisoka chi mpombo ayi.I mean its really dissappointing when you look at the calibre of most of these so called ministers, away mwe.Mpombo with his ugly beads and hair,if he was in the ministry of finance. He could have been scaring the donors this man, with his vi ndevu.Ba Munkombwe that finished old man, and you call him minister surely. Ala kwena Mu Zambia katwishi.

  40. defense forces are non partisan and i believe ba mpombo is wrong to think that someone can intense any military personal.

  41. #75. Okey Ba Chewe. Finance for this man would be pushing nerve of the Zambian people a little to hard. He is MP of where again?

  42. #77 i dont even know the constituency which this man represents in parliament. That is if he has any. Tapaba na quality pali uyu mpombo.

  43. “He explained that construction work will start as soon as possible saying government is not happy to see members of the defense wing living among civilians.”

What is the ‘soon’ in the above quote meaning exactly? Is it today this afternoon? or tomorrow? Next year? in 2011?

I want to believe that a contractor has been chosen in looking at the presentation of the news item, and I expect that the exact timelines of starting and completing the work have been presented to GRZ. Thus, Minieter Mpombo MUST tell us the actual truth instead of probable speculation of ‘soon’ which can mean anything.

  44. Mpombo is the one instigating the politics of fear. Defense forces have been living like vagabonds for a long while. It is very interesting to see Govt. take action to meet their needs but then again the question remains an answered…why now? Like any other public sector, the issue of defense forces’ plight will continue to attract public interest. Look at the Z’ police for instance. It is because of neglect and poor conditions that leads them into corrupt practices. If the Govt. says they are going to build them houses then they should start now and probably extend this to teachers, nurses etc. They should not delay this action and use it as a political campaign.

  45. Bushe ndelota nangu awe? Pumpy my friend here is a hug for you. Am so happy to have you back. 46. Life_life, you urgently need to have your brain checked. You behave like a run-away loon from of course you know. Desist from posting until such a time when you are cerified ‘fit’. Pls do this as a favour to yourself ok. Now thats my boy, Life_life!!!

  47. Why the fear if everything is in order within the army? What r the MMD afraid of? If they continue to make promises to the men in uniform without follow up action then they should fear for their lives. For how long have they been promised the said houses-houses that remain a pipe dream? The men in uniform will be incited by circumstances and not by ‘careless politicians’. By ‘careless politicians’ I believe Mpombo means the opposition politicians. The only ‘careless politicians’ I know of r all in MMD, ie, Mpombo, Teta, Ronnie, etc. In my language Mpombo is a bad word, just the way the owner looks!!!

  48. Chewe, am fine, i always check out LT but do not comment, i just find it boring of late, good to hear that you are fine too.

  56. Maestro
I do like Micheal Sata because at least hes got a proven record of
    delivering to the masses(teachers,nurses,miners,street kids). And here are my reservations;
1-His style of management seem to me as if it is serously dictatorial(worse than shi Panji)
2-He lacks consultation with other senor party officials
    3-Verbal diorrhea
4-It is impossible to wipe him clean of the sins of the FTJ regime
    5-His age often stumbles me
    But certainly not HHHHHHH
