Court orders speedy trial of Ryan Chitoba

Share

The Lusaka magistrate court has ordered that the case involving suspended Drug Enforcement Commissioner, Ryan Chitoba, be heard even during weekends.

Senior Resident Magistrate, Charles Kafunda, says the matter be heard during weekends because it has taken long to conclude.

Magistrate Kafunda said this when the matter came up before him for continued trial.

He said that all parties must avail themselves before the court as ordered.

This was after one of the defence lawyers, Mwangala Zaloumis, excused herself as she had another matter in the high court.

Chitoba his deputy, Jacob Koyi, and Commissioner for administration and training, Charles Ndulumina are alleged to have made huge withdrawals of funds from a DEC forfeiture account.

The account contained funds confiscated from drug traffickers and money launderers and was banked for safe-keeping.

  1. Yes, there is need to have these cases heard and disposed of timely. Some cases have lasted over 8 years and there is still no indication as to when they will be concluded. In case the state loses and costs are awarded, I can’t imagine how much will be taxed considering the time that Chitoba has been out of employment. I hope that even those handling cases arising from the ZAMTROP account will follow suit

  2. Let the case be disposed off immediately. Mr Chitoba behaved like Mr Clean due to political backing. There are many elements including those handling corruption cases who are still stealing through hide and seek, their time is coming and it may not be long. Remember justice delayed is justice denied. Well done Kafunda and manga kapondo Chitoba.

  3. They also need to speed up FTJ’s cases since the amin witness Chungu is back, why are they being selective, they have locked up only those who were used to steal leaving the main culprit to enjoy freedom.

  4. Yes, FTJ’s case should also be speeded up. It has taken far too long to be heard. Order his trial even at night.

  5. this man is just brave for nothing and should be taught some good lesson.he went to DEC when all these plunder cases had already began.what does he do.he go does what he was told to fight by his boss.plunderrr.so does such a man deserves liniency?

  6. They say as you climb the ladder of success check occasionally 2 make sure it is leaning against the the right wall other wise court cases everyday.:-w:)]

  7. The entire judicial system is too outdated and cumbersome, it needs restructuring and updating if justice is to be served.

  8. What really has made zambia poor ? ladies and gentle don`t you suppose its purely selfishness and greedy on the people entrusted with responsibilities .May justice prevail

  9. Lawyers in ZED are the main causers of the delay in the dispoasal of cases in courts. They make the wheels of justice move very slowly at times bringing them to an abrupt halt. They are full of excuses:- another matter in court, sick child, at times even a mere flue, out of town, gone to school etc. Our lawyers are too business oriented they dont mind the plight of accused person( their clients) who rot in remand prisons for a very long time. Something needs to be done to regulate the conduct of these so called learnt collegues.
