Man found in possession of pornographic material

A 46 year old man of Siavonga Township in Southern province yesterday appeared in the Siavonga magistrate court charged with the offence of possessing pornographic materials.

Henry Sakala, a Lodge manager at Eagles Rest, appeared before magistrate Veronica Sikwangala to answer the charge.

Particulars of the offence are that Sakala, a resident of Kaleya compound, was found in possession of obscene materials, contrary to section 177 (1) (a) of the penal code, chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.

The court heard that on 21st January 2009, Sakala was found with nine obscene DVDs, which tends to corrupt morals of people in the country.

Sakala told the court that he understood the charge. The court has since set February 10, 2009 for plea and possible commencement of trial.

The accused, who has been in custody since his arrest on the 21st of January, was however released on a K5 million bail.

Meanwhile, trial for the three persons accused of stealing some items from the accident scene, commenced in the Siavonga magistrate court yesterday.

Seven state witnesses have so far testified before magistrate Sikwangala and have since implicated a bus driver, a taxi driver and a bus conductor who were arrested by police in connection with the theft of the items.

The stolen items involved a cassette radio, cell phone, passport and undisclosed sums of money belonging to the deceased Interpol officer who was based at Kariba border post.

The three men are alleged to have taken turns removing the items from a golf car that the deceased police officer was driving.
Trial continues on February 3rd, 2009.

  34. Matters like such are a private issue that adults should be free to indulge in in their own private homes . The law should only draw a line if pornography is put on a public platform. A law like such is archaic because zambia already corrupted it’s morals a long time ago , so this is as good as closing the barn while the horse is already gone. Pornography is more widespread than people refuse to accept in zambia with widespread internet and 3g phones. Zambia is not a moral utopia in fact so laws trying to protect certain morals are useless

  132. It is my opinion that the law regarding pornography is victorian,archaic and completetly unsuited for the society we live in today.Porn for private use by an adult is ok by me. How many movies with explicit violence are out on the streets? Lets respect privacy.

Well,the law is the law so the guy will be dealt with by the law however,i feel the law needs to be changed so that they only ban the importation of pornographic material & selling because if Police find me with a dvd in my own house how do i corrupt the morals of society,i have a big stash of porn dvd’s myself but they are for my personal use,in my own bedroom with my wife,when i return to Zambia,they should only trouble me for bringing a huge amount not a single dvd for personal use.
