Adopt revolutionary approach to address economic challenges, Former First Lady

Share

Former first lady Maureen Mwanawasa has challenged government to adopt a revolutionary approach to the nation’s economic challenges and create fall back industries to avoid over dependency on the mining sector.

Dr. Mwanawasa has also called for enhanced education provision and accessibilities saying education remained Zambia’s cornerstone to economic development.

Speaking in Chililabombwe when she donated assorted educational support materials to the Konkola Support to Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC), Dr. Mwanawasa said there was need to effectively use the abundant natural resources to develop various industries unlike depending on minerals, which are a wasting asset.

She said Zambia had the potential to alleviate poverty and ensure its citizens accessed better living standards through the implementation of pro poor policies and economic activities in various sectors.

Dr. Mwanawasa further called for the development of export zones in border areas to enhance cross border trade, which has the capacity of creating jobs for the trading communities.

“Zambia does not determine copper prices on the world market so people should have other sources of income in case they lose their jobs as is the case now. Copper is a wasting asset hence the need to create sustainability of other industries,” she advised.

The Former First Lady reiterated the Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative (MMCI)’s resolve to offer educational and nutritional support to OVCs as well as the aged in various localities in the country.

Among the donated items were books, assorted clothes, blankets, sugar, soap mosquito nets, chitenge materials, jerseys and sweat shirts as well as bicycles.

And speaking at the same function Konkola OVC chairperson, Obvious Kamukwamba thanked the MMCI for the donation saying the gesture would greatly help the 300 orphans his organization was currently sponsoring.

Mr Kamukwamba said his organization would demonstrate transparency in distributing the donated equipment while urging the beneficiaries to take care of the gifts whose monetary value was high.

In an other development, former first lady has implored the Zambian community to uphold children’s rights and create a conducive environment under which they should grow and develop into productive citizens.

Speaking when she officiated at the opening of Nsungeni Early Childhood Care and Development Centre at Chililabombwe’s Lubengele market, Dr. Mwanawasa said children need to be brought up in conducive environment.

The care and development centre, which shelters about 160 marketeer’s children, is an initiative of the Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative (MMCI) and Konkola Copper Mines (KCM).

Dr. Mwanawasa said the centre would enable disadvantages children access protection, good nutrition, healthy living conditions and an early education while their parents are trading at the market.

She commended KCM for its corporate social responsibility programme which had facilitated the funding of the project, which caters for children aged between six months and six years.

The MMCI has also facilitated the construction of another childhood care and development centre in Kapiri Mposhi called Amundame.

And KCM General Manager Keith Kapui expressed delight at his organisation’s involvement in helping the underprivileged in its area of operation through childhood care and educational support.

Mr Kapui said KCM was committed to investing into community ventures that uplifts children’s well being and development as demonstrated by its capital injection into community and trust schools in Chingola and Chililabombwe.

Mwilayangala nesukulu. There are no short cuts to certain things. Those who have been in the inside of a classroom understand what is involve.

    Ata seee!!!!!

  3. This Woman is inteligent and has Leadership qualities. Far much better than the Mulongotis and the Tetamashimbas.Government should listen to her.

  4. #12
    Zambian
    I didnt see ya?
That makes the 2 of us! PhD in what, has she enherited the honary of the late? I dont get it really!

  5. Maureen is now being a cheat; from where has she obtain the doctarate coz she was studying for her masters during the funeral of her late husband? Any way i guess she is only trying to test the waters on the political. Remember she was the 17th candidate during the NEC meeting to select the MMD presidential candidate and got no vote

  6. She was a week ago confered with a Doctorate of Law from a varsity in the states…
Too much in Diaspora, take some brakes once a while and come down to ZED to update urselves…sha!!!!

  7. #14 Casey Kisho and #10 Zambian. Don’t let the Doctor title worry you much. One can be awarded the title of a Doctor if they show total commitment by working hard in social endeavours towards improving the lives of their fellow citizens. This is what Maureen is doing.
Emulate her instead of criticising her.

  8. Give credit where it is due. Otherwise you end up being a pathological cynic, or may be suspected of also suffering from the PHD syndrome. At least Maureen is making the right noises as far as I’m concerned. One wonders whether she is preparing herself for something…eeh…I don’t want to speculate!!! :-?:-?:-?:-?

EDUCATE US MY FRIEND, SOME OF US HAVE NEVER BEEN MU CLASS.
ITS NOT THAT WE DONT KNOW HOW THESE THINGS WORK, ITS JUST THAT WE ARE NOT AWARE THATS ALL.

    SO CHILL, DONT FALL

  10. She needs to tread carefully and intelligently. Everyone knows she was not in favour of RB being president. She can help without making it look like she is doing what a ‘competent’ government should be doing. If she wants to meddle in politics she must just say so. At least the GRZ will save all that which is supposed to build her house. By the way, where is the money coming from for all these donations?

  11. But in Zambia we have doctor wow! Na ba Maureen she is a doctor. So even RB will be a doctor. We have Dr kaunda,Dr Chiluba, the late was a doctor,Dr Maureen Mwanawasa and we will have Dr RB. Study for your doctorates ba mukukulu. Martworld Nice Chilumendo so how old are you now?

  12. Utuma Zambians tumo Twama Jealosy. This Lady is hard working ,intelligent and committed to helping the underpriviledged. The University in a developed country acknowledged this and she was awarded the honourary doctorate.Don’t exhibit Jealosy here. Thats why Mulowela.

  13. #18. and #11.
Can you check and tell me if you can still call 084 190 0030 from South africa and then dial my Lusaka number 00260 and be charged for a local call. I will be in SA next week and would like to know if I can still use this free phone service to Zambia landlines

  14. Chewe

    Matworld

    Lt award winner for :-j:-j:-j

  15. Well, we’ll soon have one Dr Rupiah Bwezani Banda. I hear that Maureen and Levy gave a huge donation to the university that gave an honorary PhD.

  16. #27 matworld! am preparing to carry eight babies for rashid, if you dont mind u can also add so that they are nine. tukeshiba ifyakwakana after they are born. dont dissapoint your mother

  17. 10. Zambian ,

Its a honorary Doctorate from some USA’s California based funny Christian University. Some Zambians Seventh day members attending that school solicited for it that she be given for her anti aids role as member of the first ladies club then. She will be there for a graduation in may this year that where all will be officially confered whole witnessing the graduation ceremony. Its not academic but honoray surprisng though is the fact that she is already using it when they are yet to confer on her.You Zedians go ecstatic with such things and she is no exception.Congratulations to her.

  18. Nelson Madela has been conferred with many honorary doctorates, but the man is so down to earth and prefares to be called Nelson Madiba Mandela. What a great man indeed.

Many African leaders are so into trying to be honored by the title than their deeds, this is because their deeds are pathetic.

  19. I thot I was the only one who was wondering as to when did Maureen become a Phd. Its not that we are jealous but that we need to know since she a public figure. Who knows we may as well be inspired and just as someone said that it was through working hard helping the community what about us who busy sweeping the roads helping the community to be clean. Can we be considered as well?

  20. I would be interested to know how parents come up with names like “Obvious”. Very interesting.

As for the fall back industries, good thoughts Maureen. But can we please hear from the Govt what steps they have taken to diversify the economy. Everyone knows we desperately need to reduce dependency on copper. How much diversification have we done so far, where are we right now and how much diversification do we expect to achieve in the near future eg 5 to 10 years. Can we please quantify the progress we are making, if any at all. We want tangible results, not rhetoric.

  21. What do you mean when you say Maureen is hard working? There are so many educated and hard working people in Zambia.Should all of them be given honouraly doctorates? How many such kind of doctors are we going to have should this be the case? Get seriousy with books, deep yourself in there and get soaked with knowledge. And then you can have a doctorate. Not what is happening bane.

  22. nina chale #19. please educate me: so why is maureen Dr. Mwanawasa instead of Dr. followed by her maiden name? Tell me if am wrong is it not true that Female Doctors maintain thier maiden names when they are awarded a doctorate? Explain please and dont laugh at me you all out there.

  23. So its possible to first play around in your youth, have a below average form 5 certificate and the later do all your post secondary edu up to PHD as a MATURE, as long as you have cash!

  24. # 30. #29.

Please do me a favour, dial 084 190 0030, listen to the announcement and then type 00260 1 250707 and tell me if your call is connected. I would like to know if this free service from South Africa to Zambia landlines are still working

  25. #38 Balck Man’s Child.

I heard recently on a bbc program: Mandela’s 90th Birthday, that the man has 85 honourary doctorates.

I have seen a lot of humble people who you never know they have so and so doctorates. But I have also come across a lot of pompous chaps who will not answer you unless you start with Dr XYZ.

Actually,it’s not just limited to this area. Ever come across an Executive Director of a Kantemba club, and other such big titles for small jobs. People can be proud in this world I tell you. But that’s mankind for you.

  26. Of what use is a Phd when you are about to expire. Get it whilst young and relax when you are old.

    The balance is very important.

  27. # 30. #29.

Please do me a favour, dial 084 190 0030, listen to the announcement and then type 00260 1 250707 # and tell me if your call is connected. I would like to know if this free service from South Africa to Zambia landlines are still working.

Do not forget to end the Celtel number with #

  28. Good move Maureen. Although I keep questioning your PhD, I will always give credit where it is due and in this case it is and keep up the good work that should be covered by your own brand as Maureen Mwanawasa’s own thinking/initiative…PhD!! However, I would also like to know the research you did for your thesis i.e. methodology etc. Is there any chance you can make it available for us to see and just maybe, I could use some of your findings for my lit. review/secondary research!!. The truth is, I do not want to spend another four years at Uni. when there are other ways of getting it quicker…though meaningless if no academic graft has been put into it!! 😕

  29. Shakes,

I just dialed 084 190 0030 and then dialed my home number in Lusaka starting with 00260 211 . I spoke for about 5 minutes. I was only charged R1.85 per minute from my cellphone.

    48. You can try it. It works

  30. I totally agree with the example on Mandela. The man is great and respected world over. But his humility amazes a lot of people.Despite having so many honourary Doctorates he prefferes just to be called mr Mandela. Not these fake doctors we have in Zambia.Mbo!

  31. Shakes,

I can also call my family in Livingstone using this service. It does not work to Zambia mobile phones though.:-?

  32. very soon we will hear of Dr Bwezani R Banda and Dr MC Sata, nipa zed hahahahahaha! anyway congrats Dr Mwanawasa.

  33. What is this Dr Maureen Mwanawasa bull-crap? Its very funny how people from 3rd world countries take honorary degrees seriously. R. Reagan had 17 of them but he never addressed himself as DR. The honorary degrees are just a way universities raise money by conferring some one with that title for a monetary donation. SO hoochie scrap it off, go back to school and earn on!

  34. That is timely advice from Dr. Maureen Mwanawasa to every Zambian who is concerned with development of this country. Can the powers that be take such advice. We need to add value to our minerals before they are exported. As for locating Free Econmic Processing Zones in border areas am afraid not on our side with DR Congo. We will just create another Free Smuggling Zones for ourselves. No matter what it takes DR. Congo with its vastness and abundant natural resources, that country will take another 50yrs to stablize. Leadership for DR Congo is determined by outsiders. I once lived and experieced life in that part of Africa. Former 1st lady keep on giving us timely advice for mahala for now.

  35. 37. I am very much around. have been busy at some university in the mideast. but I am always reading the comments. remember even last time, I told you I am around.

  36. MUAUREEN WAS CONFERED WITH A PhD from a USA University. I say heartfelt congratulations to her, I only hope it’s not the same that did give LPM the Doctarate then can dilute this one. well it’s not a secret that she still has Presidential ambitions so it’s campaign time. I dont fault her, when you in Political arena you develop a long term struggle and strategy. NyamaSoya just assumed that seat from nowhere, he was a lucky man right place right time spiced with rigging. Hey LT is also confering me as Dr Mpangula Mputyu. Chiluba had it from Malawi, LPM had it from USA so too Maureen.

  37. Its so see Maureen back on her feet and doing so much for the OVC’S
i totally give credit to her. IF i may be allowed to digress from the issue at hand i would like the former first lady to shed some light of the alleged relationship with darligton mwape.

  38. 52. JD,
Where have heard a honorary degree come with an exchange of a desertation? Haven’t head that its church confered degree?

  39. No. 47 UK – Zed Observer, You are very right. Did you know that with the achievements Barack Obama has made, had he been in Zambia he would have being called
‘His Excellency Dr Barack H. Obama the Great’.

Sometimes we tend to loss our priorities in Zambia, especially with our State House, I am not sure may be it’s another Department in the School of Engineering with former graduates like Dr Kafupi.

RB will be next just wait and see.

  40. Maureen failed to advice her own bedmate in state house, but suddenly she is a champion of wisdom. Give us a break, just mourn your husband!

  41. RB it would make sense if just did a desertation since he already has a Masters Degree with many years of public service.A Doctorate for him would make sense with regards to his long service at the UN,in our foreign service,Government Ministrial and now Executive head of the country. That a potential candidacy to challenge an Executive PHD in Public Policy,International Relations or Public Administration.Maureen has only work as a clerk for the Kabwe Cooperatives and as late Levy’s secretary before she transfomed the boss secretary contract into boyfriend-girl friend then hijacking of the man from his wife and family of many years. She has no CV whatsoever to credential a honorary PHD.

  42. Hey you guys Sata deserves it shaa.He is the greatest politician that Zambia has ever had.Even the wife is a doctor. That man is very itelligent!

  43. Im sure there is a mistake here!,Dr.Mwanawasa is dead!.Any resurrections?.I mean,Maureen can remove the Dr tagg so that people dont think otherwise. We are still mourning her Husband and she shouldnt make cosmetics out of this.

  44. Am i reading right or not, when did Mrs Mwanawasa get her doctorate, has she been given an honorary doctorate in something or what coz as far as i know she’s still or has just completed her masters?

  45. Imwe opunzila pa blog apa iyayi lekani valema kubelenga.

  46. No. 73 Jedi, that Zed for your information. Who ever shouts the loudest is intelligent and wise.

The old fox are not helping us in anyway.

  47. to all those criticising maureen…
she has been HONOURED PEOPLE! she been given a gift in short… the sooner you accept, the quicker you will move to minding your own tuntemba!

  48. Am really glad that Mrs Mwanawasa has been confered with a doctorate,at least we know her educational history infact non of her brothers or sisters is illiterate, they are all high achievers.
The only doctorate that i saw brought shame was FTJ’s,he is a high school dropout & has no basic degree but suddenly his title changed to ‘Dr’

  49. Kuti wapenenamo pa Zed. Why are they calling her that when they havent even confered it on her as some blogger suggests?? My bet is that its already been given. After all honorary ones are even given by air. Remember one Mike Tyson? Youngest boxing heavy weight champion then, alias ‘the baddest man on earth’. He was also given an honorary Doctorate at the peak of his career. I never read or heard him being called Dr Tyson(atase!!!) He did the honorary thing, stash it in the trash can and life goes on. Pa zed ngalwalinya…………Dr Tyson did this; Dr Tyson said that; In a speech read on his behalf by Prof Namulambe, Dr Tyson said…………blahblah………..

  50. Guys ZNBC is opening a new TV channel and they are looking for a name.I think CTv should do? CCTv-Crapy Tv 2! whats ur suggestion?

  51. NDIPO BA MOLEEN MULI NA STRATEGY

MOLEEN, TWANAKA, VERY SOON, U SHALL BE OUT OF LIMELIGHT, YOU KNOW NOTHING LASTS FOREVER.THOSE DONATIONS ARE THINGS SHE USED TO GET FROM WLEWISHERS. THEY HAVE BEEN AT SOME WAREHOUSE,BUT NOW THAT MMCI WILL NOT BE ACTIVE FOR LONG, SHE HAS TO DISTRIBUTE AND SINCE NO VOTE BUYING, SHE HAS TO GIVE THEM AWAY.THOSE ARE THINGS THEY USED TO GV DURING ELECTIONS.ALA BWAFYA.ICHALO ICHI..INSHIKU SHILALINGANYA. 52. ISAMBO LYAMFWA KU BAUPENA BABILI…….ABA KASHI KANDI, CHILILO NGA CHPAWA ELYO BAKOPE KUMBI, BAKCHINJE NESHINA, ATI TEYNE NACHIBESA, NOMBA NINE NA ALLAN………

    CONGRATS FOR GOOD WORK.

  53. Some people are real attention seekers aren’t they!!! Its amazing how she is suddenly an expert on running a country and as for the “Dr”, has she inherited that from her husband. Why wasn’t she advising her husband on all these things when he was in power. Suddenly she is an expert. She should be at home helping her kids through the trauma of losing their dad and mourning her beloved “MR PRESIDENT” not pushing her own political agenda so soon after her husband’s passing.

  54. indeed. loosing a father is not easy. you cna imagine how even michelle decicated time to help her kids adjust to white house, but this one, before even the kids could wipe their tears on the faces, she is in public…my this woman loves attention. no wonder she used to think she was life first lady or forever zambia’s first lady.

go and console your children than being all over. they need you.

  55. my good late LPM must be watching downa nd just shaking his head. if he could turn, he would in his grave and look elsewhere. this woman is pushing her agenda too much.

  56. This is a preduled to seek elected office. Politics is dirty and is based on baseless facts. Doctor Who ? This jerk in on something : smoking, screwing snorting or sniffing.

  57. Ok I see so thats what all this nonsense of her getting a PHD is about….. so how much exactly did they donate to that University in America…. A whole load of b**ll.sh**t when we have universities in Zambia that desperately need money. When will we ever stop this nonsense. I bet you what!!!she soon will have a big kapoto in govt.

  58. Doctror! my foot! Let’s get serious people. It’s not that easy. If working hard at anything earns you the title, whoever has been busy forwarding ‘doctorate’ degrees to state house should have first searched for hardworkers in the copper mines; fellows who toiled hard for 30 years digging umukuba for mother Zambia and getting nothing in return; that’s hard work, fellas;these are the real doctors by this criteria. What has Maureen done for the country that should entitle her to a doctorate from anywhere (unless she has written a thesis we dont know about, in which case we will be happy for her)? It is things like these that make real doctors leave the country.it’s just not that easy fellas!@#

  59. I think Maureen should do the honorable thing and stash the Dr. in the cellar. Dr this, Dr that, Dr fimofimo . . . . . . nabakabwalala bonse sure!!! Lekeni aba ibombela PhD beka ebobaleita ati Dr Chakuti! Sha!! So ati naba RB nabo nombaline ninshi babapela – am labbish!

  60. With all this abuse of the honorary PHD in Zambia the real academic Phd is losing its value. eko wapitila konse ati Dr shani Dr Shani! AWE! Cant some law be passed to regulate the use of these titles? Is too late to make a submission to the NCC? Use of these titles is a gross misrepresentation of ones ability and knowledge. If they are to insist of using these fake titles let them also be stating how and where the title was conferred. “Dr Maureen Mwanawasa, (Honorary), University of Chilenje”. Else they are deceiving people, especially those who dont even know that such a thing as an honorary PHD exists. It’s deceptive, unethical and unfair! NENSONI TABAKWETE!!!

  61. “Dr. Mwanawasa has also called for enhanced education provision and accessibilities saying education remained Zambia’s cornerstone to economic”

Good stuff Mrs Maureen Mwanawasa, Dr?, on the education enhencements you are carrying forward. I need to see more and more Zambians even old aged ones to get a chance to write grade 7, 9 or 12 exams in their lifetimes.

All best in your future endeavours and please inform me where the “Dr title” is coming from.

  62. #12

I agree with you. This woman is very intelligent compared to the cadre men who are polluting the govt. Can those who are against her leave her alone. The honour she has is just the favour from God. Go Mama Doctor GO!

  63. Im now forthwith dropping My “Dr”which was confered to me by LT.I thank them all the same.I have reverted to my first degree that I so tirelesly worked for. hey, I have just researched, Mandela was confered with a Dr but never used it. In zambia these Political Leaders get messed up in the head. LPM was given Honourary Doctarate, Chiluba had his dubiously done in Malawi. K.K and his friends used to give themselves such honours in their time. Well Africa is a circus, land of vernomous snakes, crocs, lions & rigged elections.

  64. Just another one. It will be disappointing for RB to come back bear handed, i.e without a PhD from his former University College in Ethiopia and he may be the only unlucky President to leave Plot 1 without title of Ndotolu (Dr)PhD in continuity of good governance.
May some University in Kenya may consider him for one in Globe trotting.
