Kawambwa residents starts road works

Share

Some Kawambwa residents in Luapula Province have started working on the Kawambwa – Mulwe road using hoes and machetes

This follows the poor state of the road barely 6 months since it was last worked on by Sable Construction Company.

And a check by ZANIS yesterday (Tuesday)found a group of people filling potholes with burnt bricks and charging motorists K5 000 for using the road.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Davis Kabila told ZANIS in an interview that the residents took the initiative as patriotic Zambians who wanted to complement Government’s efforts in ensuring good road networks.

Mr Kabila complained that potholes had become big forcing motorists and pedestrians to create alternative roads.

He warned that if the road was not urgently worked on it would become impassable.

He appealed to the Road Development Agency (RDA) to consider renegotiating with Sable and claimed that the company did absolutely nothing.

He said though they were unqualified, they were in a position to see how deplorable the road had become and called for immediate Government intervention.

Mr. Kabila said they took the initiative as patriotic Zambians who wanted to complement government’s efforts to ensure good road networks.

Asked if they were not worsening the state of the road, Mr. Kabila said his group was doing a perfect work although they lacked bigger equipment.

And Mr. Kabila expressed fear that unless Government worked on the feeder roads in Kawambwa, the distribution and marketing of agricultural products this farming season would suffer a serious setback.

Efforts to get a comment from district director of works proved futile as he was reported to have travelled to Lusaka.

  1. I’m not happy how can a road that was worked on 6 months ago start deteriorating. pa Zed what is this? so Sable given full pay with promise of other projects. Atase. The govt should be serious, we need to get back the tax payers money and jail the culprits. The MMD full of rhetorics but no action. This is a test case of a banana case!!!!!!

  2. Shame.. the road must definitely been in an appalling state. Shame that the citizens have to go through such.. shame that our government cant do better!

  3. This is a good example of grassroot development. The residents have made one step to progress already so the government should help the out without any excuses.

  4. #7 Nine Chale I am with you.

Putting criticism aside, the effort our friends in Kawambwa have made is
a step forward towards independence. As people, for certain things
we should not wait for the government to act since it is a known fact
that there is too much beaurocracy when it comes to decision making.
The people who are spearheading the project must in fact be voted into
authoritative positions that will enable them do what is right for mankind.

  5. Businesses or companies with machinery must render assistance to this group
of citizens. I am positive that if more actions of this nature materialize
in Zambia, the country will be well off in a few years to come. Think about
it for a moment, roads in Rome built in the ancient times are still being used today
and they look just good. We should not cry about potholes year in and year out if
we can do something about it. I call upon those those that have Civil Engineering
knowledge to render advice to our friends in Kawambwa on how to properly patch
or maintain the road. The idea for a toll charge is welcome since the fund raised
will be used on the road(s). What a bright idea!

  6. Please note that LT is very discriminative. If your comment includes a link to a web site, they will not display your comment. Just be aware. I have pictures to show you if you are interested. Send me an e-mail [email protected]

  7. This is my continuation on the subject.Lusaka City Council must collect a
TOLL fee from motorists to drive on the roads in the city center. This way, there
will be less congestion on Cairo Road, Freedom Way and Lumumba Road.

  8. Sable Construction Company has been known to perfom shoddy services. I really wonder why govt continues awarding this company any contracts.

    Govt look for reputable contractors…:o:-t:-t

  9. Please Editor Check the HEADLINES before they are posted. Today we have
“Kawambwa residents starts” instead of “KAWAMBWA RESIDENTS START.” Again we have

“TWO PEOPLE GETS” instead of “TWO PEOPLE GET”

    Wake up EDITOR

  10. My sentiments exactly, #17. BaZambia!! Not only on that report, also look at their report headlined “Two people GETS prison sentence for flouting fish ban” This is pathetic!

  11. “And a check by ZANIS yesterday (Tuesday)found a group of people filling potholes with burnt bricks and charging motorists K5 000 for using the road.”

Good move Kawambwa residents but I have a feeling that your are charging too much. Also what happens when the same motorist uses that road more than one time, say in the morning on going for work, a two-way trip at lunch hour to home and back for work and lastly back home in the late afternoon?

How about motorists who use the use the road at night?

Whatever the case, this is the way to go and be patriotic Zambians not necessarily patriot front Zambians in Northern and Luapula provinces.

  12. Hai pipo. just having Full Breakfast (at home) which is rare in Zambia. will join u later. thanks for understanding.

  13. fwabupuba sana, those same people being charged ama 5000k are the tax payers who are also paying fuel levy meant to help with road maintainance there must be some politician connected with this fake sable co. who will save this country from these mmd thieves!

  14. Reporting should also be more helpful to us. In this case why not provide a brief paragraph on who under normal circumstances is responsible for accepting/approving the work done by a contractor like Sable. There should be an attempt to expose the source of the ills we endure repeatedly.
