Zambia Beats Senegal For CHAN Bronze

Share

Zambia shrugged off sturdy Senegal  to rally to win 2-1 and collect bronze in the two sides 3rd and 4th place playoff match at the CHAN tournament in Abidjan this evening.

It was a much improved performance by Zambia against Senegal following that 0-0 draw in the two sides first CHAN meeting in a Group A match played on February 25 at the same venue.

Star of the show on the day was Power Dynamos midfielder Kennedy Mudenda whose sparkling display was the catalyst of Zambia’s drive with an eye on the bronze on Saturday.

However, Senegal withered the early charge from Zambia and took the lead in the 22nd minute through Omar Sow who raced through the oppositions defence to crash in the ball past Zesco United goalkeeper Jacob Banda who was making his CHAN debut on the day.

Banda’s club mate Jonas Sakuwaha had a chance to level matters midway through the game after he ghosted in behind a Senegal defender only to head wide a superb far right cross from Zanaco midfielder Henry Banda.

Zambia equalized just after the restart through second half substitute Simon Bwalya of Power in the 48th minute after finishing off a Given Simguluma rebound.

Seven minutes later live-wire Mudenda raced down the middle towards the edge of the box to let-rip a sublime strike that miraculously came off the left post.

Lusaka Dynamos midfielder William Njobvu too tested Senegal with  another long effort of his own in the 58th minute.

16 minutes from time, Singuluma rounded a defender after a cheeky layoff from Sakuwaha to score his 5th CHAN tournament goal and to put him as firm favorite for the golden boot award after the final match against Ghana and DR Congo at the same venue on Sunday.

  1. A very complete perfomance. i was really impressed with with kennedy Mudenda and the substitute Simon Bwalya. The captain for the day Francis Kasonde is way much better than Tana!

  2. Mwabeleka nobalombwanama. Thank you for getting a medal for Zambia, it has been no small achievement gentlemen. Please, make sure you get to the 2010 World Cup so that Mr kalusha Bwalya can at least player one macth at such a big event in his lifetime as I believe that he is one of the greatest players that have been on the world football stage and thus he deserves an appearance at a world cup even in his old retirement age.

  3. I can now have a peaceful sleep having beaten the west African country. Renard deserves a clap guys, he has tried though it hasn’t been easy for him and the intere team. Egypt, here we come.

  4. Ba Zambeziland nalelo bawina Chipolopolo! iyeeeee chipolopolo, Ijeeeeee Jipolopolo! Hiyeeeee Hipolopolo! Kiiyeeeee Kipolopolo iyeeeee, Siyeeee Sipolopolo! Tiyee Tupolopolo! Renaaaaa chipolpolo!

  5. But why were there so many Bandas in the team?I see RB’s family tree growing in our soccer team so Govt should set up a tribunal to investigate this anormaly!!!!!

  6. I win for Zambia always brings fonder memories about football for me , though not an ardent fan of it. Not an easy task to have beaten Senegal, there are smart lads too.

  7. Great job Zambia. You made me proud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    LUITUMEZI HAHULU KUMINA MICAHA
    KOZO
    NYAMBE ANGULA AMILAME!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Some of you bloggers on this site behave like chameleons. When Zambia was beaten by Congo on wednesday, a lot of unprintable comments were written by some the bloggers. Please support the team whether win or lose. You dont expect our team to perform miracles under the current situation in the country. Our leaders havent invested in sport. No decent stadia for the national team, no preparation, lack of sponsorship for certain clubs, luck of political will by MMD govt, etc. Given the circumstances, the boys have actually done well. Congratulations.

    • #17 I do suppose you have a point. But know this, gratitude is a virtue it is not found among gross people. So don`t lose heart when bloggers become unpredictable .It really takes such to have a complete imperfect world.

    • I am with you my friend. There are a lot of terrible Zambian Citizens’ comments that I do not wish to read. This is very very sad. The insults simply show us why we still have tribal characters who can not see that Zambia needs technocrats to lead her in 2011 after the upcoming tripartite elections instead of failed recycled politicians who have failed to inspire us in the past by supporting the Third Term for Mr FTJ Chiluba (Hon. Doc., Malawi).

    • Ine when we were beaten by Congo I was accused of being a congolese becoz of commending our guys even wheh they lost.

    • Maestro for your comment.
Nine Chale, atleast I have across my point and you agree with me even if you using my identity in vain.

  9. Yes Im glad for that win too. The boys were committed this time, as if they read our complaints on LT last time. I suppose HR logged on to the internet and checked out LT. Whatever happened I think they have tried. Although in my opinion Zambia was the best team in this tournament thats why Im still not flattered by this result. More especially losing to TP Mazembe, when we were even better than them. Or and you guys who think that when we critisize, their below par performance, we are committing a crime, maybe you are not tax payers or maybe you easily get content with results even when you know we can do better. You are the reason we never improve. We simply demand better, thats all.

    • Baba, demanding better results can be done in a normal way and not using insults. Insults are not good for Zambia and Zambians PERIOD.

  10. Constructive criticism is the way forward. Yes there is a lot of work to be done post CHAN, but Zambia fans should build confidence in the team without tearing them down. That way greater feats cab be achieved.

  11. Constructive criticism for real and thats what I gave them right? You never see me insult. Insults yes, are not good for Zambia, I agree. Im a true fan but I criticise only as a friend would, I think that doesn’t mean I ve started supporting another team no. Zambian I ll be whether win or loose. But when I see something wrong I will mention it. OK.

    • Ba Phd holder

Longtime indeed Ala isukulu has neutralised me,I also want to have a Phd mudala.I really miss you guys you mean alot to me.

    • I have been busy too but i guess i will have some time from monday onwards. I really miss the crew coz most have changed their names so LT has become a bity boring, i only hope they will come back

  12. I’m afraid this is too good too late!! We should never get into the habit of being underdogs!! There was every chance that we should have won this tournament, in stead of scrapping for a lowly 3rd place. The boys must be serious. 3rd place is unacceptable!!!

    • Oops! “conglomeratary” is the right spelling ofcourse and not “conglometary” as stated above. IMO the idea of rating winners in 3 categories is simply a hoax to manipulate naïve competitors into thinking that only the first is the best. But a winner is a winner, despite the cesspool of medals!

    • I like that “IMO the idea of rating winners in 3 categories is simply a hoax to manipulate naïve competitors into thinking that only the first is the best. But a winner is a winner, despite the cesspool of medals!’ that would be very conforting to the lads as they face Egypt. We need to encourage them now. Lets forget about our failures, lets them(failures) only be lessons.

  13. Ok Thanks for this effort at the last minute. It would have been great if you did this just in the beginning guys. Dont underrate yourselves. You are great team but only when you start having confidence in yourselves.
We need winning always as this will make us happy in the midst of economic crisis we are facing in the country.
iyeee, iyeee chipololo. Well done guys.

  14. niceee am in wales nd i follo the chipolo polo boyos rememba zambia(4) vs(0) italy goooood times init glory yrs comin soon opefuly i loved the african nations 3-0 victory vs sudan cause my m8 is frm ther get in the boys nalelo ba bwina chipolo

  15. Great result guys! I know that international football is now more competitive than it was during Great Kalu’s time but I’m still confident we’ll see a Zambia player as great as him in the near future. Let’s build on this result. Does anyone know where I can watch the highlights of the games online? One Zambia!

  16. Soccer is a funny game indeed CONGO DR beating GHANA 2-0 whereby lifting the CHAN trophy after the Black Stars had outclassed the Leopards 3-0 in the group stages!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. I hear the SeneSene are trying to get a deal with HR to coach their team. What do you think, fellow country men?

  18. You dont win the Bronze, You loose the Gold medal. Period. We neede to make history proper, winning the first edition of CHAN 2009. We failed, last time we failed to win the COSAFA cup in the last edition format.. This is Zambia we fail at the last hurdle.
