NGO accuse Michael Sata of having personal interest in Zambian Airways

Share

A civil society organization has challenged Patriotic Front leader, Michael Sata, to declare his interest in the operations of Zambian Airways.

Zambia Direct Democracy Movement (ZDDM) national coordinator, Edwin Sakala, says it is clear that Mr. Sata has personal interest in the airline.

Mr. Sakala says the nation expects Mr. Sata to be in the forefront to ensure that the government recovers the debt owed by Zambian Airways.

He says the money can be used to improve the living standards of Zambians.

Mr. Sakala said in a statement that it is disappointing that Mr. Sata has acted contrary to people’s expectations.

Meanwhile, MMD National Secretary, Katele Kalumba, has appealed to party members to desist from commenting on allegations against former finance minister, Ngandu Magande.

Mr. Magande who is also Chilanga Member of Parliament has been accused of trying to ask government to delay repayment of a debt owed by Zambian Airways, a private firm.

Dr. Kalumba said in Lusaka that MMD members and all Zambians should respect official investigations, currently under way, on the financial irregularities at Zambian Airways.

He said people who have concerns should take their information to the committee investigating the matter.

Dr. Kalumba said Mr. Magande has expressed concern over the actions of some MMD members who are petitioning the party leadership to discipline him despite the matter being under investigations.

He said there is need to respect Mr. Magande’s concerns.

  1. So what if he has an interest in ZA? Just focus on the real problem instead of wasting time with accusations.

    • He definitely is not interested in flying one of the planes Nine Chale. I also see nothing wrong with showing interest.

    • When you say you see nothing wrong with Sata having interest would you be in a position to say the same regarding Dora Siliya?coz she could also say she has interest but wait Sata is not in power but what if he was is it ok?The minute RB declared that the director or it CEO at the mobile phone company was like his son you people where on his throat double standards Zambian. First people need to be objective what is bad for others should not be good for others just because you favour those people. As someone who aspires for top office it is important that he comes clean and declare interest otherwise he will be bias. Magandes actions though you would say not corrupt one would assume interest

    • And the plot thickens. This would help explain the sudden u-turn in relations between Sata and the Post before last year’s election.

Good post C.I.A. The hypocrisy towards Sata on this board is unbelievable.

    • Sata may have interest because I know that he is or was (if he sold his shares) a shareholder in The Post newspaper. He is one of the founders of the paper. I guess many people do not know. So if The Post owns shares in Zambian Airways then Sata is an interested party. He also owns shares in Standard Bank.

    • Ba Saint please, get your facts correct, Sata dont own any share in the postnewspaper and am sure he is interested in the issue because he is a national leader with interest of zambian national at heart and i believe you also would have interest in such important matters……..
      Have a nice day bro.

    • For many of us abroad we have no idea how Zambia is run by very few individuals. Most of the time, their interests conflict. Since liberalisation of the economy by MMD, a few Zambians in the know got many fingers in the few pies. Many of them have now come unstuck.

  2. What a quack NGO! How does he make such allegations against Sata without evidence. He has been paid to make such statements.Sata and others are just keeping an eye on the case to ensure the accussed get a fair trail, because the Z.A case has been politicised and the govt want to use it as a vehicle for punishing its political enermies like the Post, even though they don’t enough evidence.

    • even dora’s case has been over politicised.so it’s all politics and these people dont have cases to answer

    • Man! you are very right. It is either this NGO has been paid just like the so called carders or it is pleading with RB to finacy it. this is MMD under RB who is very cheap to corn.

  3. This Sakala is a foolish man………………… Listen ZA will file for bankruptcy, and the government will not any money out it. The best way to recover money was to assist it; then when its starts operating the profits should be channelled to GRZ. An accountant from GRZ should be assigned to look into the affairs of ZA. When you are doing modern business, you negotiate issues. Since ZA is in problems GRZ would call the tune and ZA would do the dancing. Closing it down WILL NEVER assist the situation. Those are shareholders you are dealing with. They employed managers to look after the affairs of their company. So this ka ntemba NGO seems to be a hand of Shikapwasha.

    • You also need to look at the operations of that company what is there to gain. Since this company was formed i do not think it has reported profits. They have been raising money it seems through favours from high positions. No one has described a structure for the company apart fronm Nchito and the Post. Even if you where to bail them out with all the money they have received in the past what guarantee do you have they will be able to payback?
For starters the company should have written to the minister regarding the payments and what the company agenda was to pay it off and not speak through another ministry where you have someone who will favour you.etc

    • CIA good remarks. I dont know why people want the gov. to assist ZA which is purely a private company. Lets not confuse the bailouts in the US with our scenerio. We are very two different economies. And ZA is no different from other private companies in Zambia with financial problems. The problem at hand is fraud. These company borrowed money without proper security and incurred other debts without forceable prospects to pay back.

    • Zaza,

How I wish you understood the loans contract close in all that ZA got and indeed the bankruptcy. The Post served itself as guarantor in event of default.ZA has defaulted and the Post squarely bears the burden of legal responsibility in accordance with the loan contract underwriting. Simple business contract law there for you.

    • Thats what i know too post being a guarantor shud pay unless they simply indemnify only in that case they shud just make sure that ZA pays

  4. LT stop wasting my time okey……….. where are my postings??? Ala everyone is free to say what think is right, its not you to tell who is wrong and who is right. Just put my opinion there ala.

    • one of RB’s schemes I bet, formed to divert the attention from Dora……….coz its really getting hotter and hotter.

  5. Some NGO have no agenda hence making trivial comments, the Z:A case has become a national issue and people in the opposition are just trying to keep an eye on the happenings. Therefore, it would be unfair to say Mr Sata has some personal interest. Besides he is not even involved, the people who have interest are the President and the Siliya.

  6. Edwin Sakala is Richard Sakala’s brother. He is trying to win favours for him. Edwin, start with your brother for signing his own academic/professional certificates before you comment on other cases.

  7. This fake and corrupt family tree called NGO is a black skull and shame to what we believe in as real NGOs that have fought and spoken for ordinary people who are voiceless and not the govt. He was just given the money by one of the political party cracking for lack of leadership and driven by UNIP type of dictatorship of trying to silence those who see their leader heading a wrong way in return making Zambia off the democratic principles that have earned her name as a peaceful country. Sata has never shown interest in ZA but congratulated the Law enforcing agents for quick response to start investigations. The MMD is cracking and is using any means to silence anyone. The citizenary office

  8. CONTD: will never be silenced by those who have lost their bearing in Zambian values and principles that we all believe in. Propaganda and blackmailing of other formitable politicians from opposition parties is not the answer for MMD. MMD cadres will match in support of RB but oppositions will be denied the permit. You people who are attending the NCC don’t waste our money come up with are constitution that will withstand the test of time. 50%+1 to included and to reduce the power of the president so that any appointment of anyone in high position to be approved by the parliament. My last question is, What will Zambians do if these people attending the NCC produce the worst…

  9. Even by the poor standards of ZANI’s articles, this one takes the buscuit. How can one accuse someone of having interest in a business without providing documentary proof? In business one is said to have interest in a business if he or she is a share holder or a creditor. Can this NGO provide proof of Sata’s shareholding in ZA? This is why these morons end up being sued.

  10. Mr. Edwin Sakala,
probably Sata knows that he would be fighting a losing battle. Hence, its better keep quite than backpeddle in the case the way Harrington has done.

I am nonpartisan and not a Sata supporter by the way.

  11. What nonsense? So, if you keep quiet or you produce the supposedly incriminating letter according to RB standards, you must have interests? How about thinking that Sata is trying to vindicate an innocent person in the name of Magande? Chama mwaume, ala upuba in Zambia today starts from Plot 1. Think of a President who deserves to be a Kapyanga now is in State house. Ala Zambia yesu now fisoso fyeka filimo. How would a normal pick William Banda with his record in the KK govt be a Political Adviser? There’s no solutions but attacking anyone who seem to come out with a new or opposes the RB govt. SHAME on the current leadership, sorry, I meant RULERS.

    • brother, dont be full of malice for RB. His presidency did not happen by mircale nor magic – the Zambian people elected him. Therefore, tone down your language. All I see in you, by speaking your Bemba is JEALOUSY that an easterner cannot be president. Galamuka, ok?

    • You must be insane. So if someone uses Bemba it is bcoz they are jealousy? What kind of logic is that? How about being proud of ones language or expressing their feelings in a language that is clearer? How about making it sounds Zambian? Your immaturity in your response negates the fact that RB is Africa’s worst President who doesn’t know whether he is going or coming. Why don’t you talk about what your RB has done rather than attacking those that point at his failures? What has Bemba got to do with his failures? What has Bemba got to do with him going after Magande even when he has the letter in his face and lying to the nation that Magande influenced the decision to defer the payments?

  12. Educated for what ? William Easterly , a Development Economist , asked this important question to a number of economists and political leaders in the developing world. Has Education helped the developing countries to improve their economic standings on the globe.

  13. C.I.A Which Director and for which mobile compony did RB declare that he was like his son? In which context was he saying that?

  14. I pray Sata does not become president of this my beloved country. I do not want to bring in the pompous Fred into the discusion but his director Nchito. I hope the public shall be privy to the report on ZA. There is something that went seriously wrong at that ZA. The NM letter is a scandle. Fred thinks he is very smart to have the audecity to even ask if there is anything wrong with the letter.Mwebantu surely we don’t have Zambians that can come up with another tabloid. Ine nanaka na Fred ne nyunshi yakwe. He started well, him like KK, FTJ Levy & the rest of them all come to the same conclusion. We make them untouchable. His paper is the same as T of Z except his is about him.

    • Tusha, there is one big difference between Tof Z and The Post. The ToZ is subsidised by the state and uses tax payers money to peddle MMD propaganda. The Post is a private newspaper which solely relies on the good will of paying customers. Like ZA, It will collapse when people stop buying it. Therefore no one has the moral right to shut it down, except market forces. Bashing Zambian owned businesses by government is what has held us back as a nation. Kaunda used to do the same in the seventies. Powerful Zambian businessmen used to live in fear of being picked up on tramped up charges. You people complain about how the Chinese treat Zambian and yet you are jelous of any successful Zambian.

    • Chita, walasa. Its petty jelousy on Tusha’s part. Truth is not a yellow line cutting through the forest green as government wants to portray itself over ZA. truth is a yellow line cutting across the yellow of the desert.

    • I catch you drift. My point being the manner of reporting is not different ,am sure you understand me. In pursing the support that we need to give to Zedians in business, we shall not relax the need for good corporate governace. For this amount of space, I may not be able to show why I think there is something wrong with the way they did busines at ZA, except to ask to you to take a closer look at all the facts in business terms.Relook at that NM letter, look at the basis of borrowing money, look at how DBZ operates.look @ closure timing & Levy passing, look @ when USD5m is borrowed Fred supporting NM in the adoption .Stretch you imagination to these & many more.I look 4ward to the report.

    • By closing the ZA how many are jobless? The best they could have done was to rehearse with ZA on ways to pay back the loans. Should they succeed in shutting the post then more job losses. The problem is that govt is fighting individuals.

    • I know a few but very senior and influencial people in government i run a big farm employ about 400 people i am in a position not to continue operations due to the current economic situation and yeah i have a mountain of back dated credit which i have not been able to pay off. In you opinion i should get direct help from government though i have managed to use my relation we influencial ppl to borrow befor because a number of ppl will loose jobs. Lets be serious its a private company and there is more out there.

    • Just indivuals should not fight goverments. Don’t misunderstand me I do not mean we will begin to idolise govts NO. I just think Fred for Nchito is getting all of us to fight for their serious business boobs.I don’t think GRZ has capacity to get involved in such mess ups.The country has so many troubles to get involved especially in the manner NM for Lvey wanted to go about things. I only urge Bwezani & his team not to be excited but to carry out investigations above board.

  15. Every Zambian should be interested in the welfare of Zambian especially our leaders. Sata’s stance helps to keep the checks and balances in place. Much more we must differentiate between financial profit and economical profit. The Zambian airways was of economical profit and for that reason the government should have found a way of supporting Zambian enterprise than victimisation. If as a country we had invested in the coming FIFA World Cup in South Africa Zambian airways would have recovered. We supported Smart Centre, Supreme furnitures, the mines and why not Zambian Airways. Obama is supporting his why not us. We need visionary politician and government advisers and not jeolousy people.

    • Ba Patriot dont mislead people. All we want to know is how this private company obtained finance with bad books. Well its good to support local companies but they should also do thier part by following correct/honest channels in running business. And Obama is supporting his companies because they are not fraudsters and US is a developed country with enough resources. Is ZA the only company which needs such support in Zambia? I dont how ZA would have recovered if the gov invested in 2010 coz by that time they would have accumulated $100m debt. They dont know how to manage such kind of business period.

    • And how do you expect Zambia to develop if not by helping limping companies? So you think by attacking Sata that is development? Or by importing everything even sex behaviors is development? How about being Zambians and growing our own economy by promoting those that seem to be working towards that? Zambia does not have an airline and when ZA was having problems, govt should have invested and be part of the stakeholders in that airline and if possible become a major investor in that airline and have voting powers. Letting go down is a lose lose scenario. Poor judgment on the part of govt and seems like they were obsessed to bring done Mmembe forgetting Mmembe is not ZA, but a mere investor.

  16. Nothing wrong with Sata declaring interest in Q3, but GRZ and organisations should help revive Zed as we are going to the worst moments

  17. SATA seems has much interests the very old old man is too vocal for nothing,he is just creating more pressure risking his palling healthy.Lubinda must take over PF top position…kwasila

  18. Sata has been cought wrong footed on this one, during 2006 elections he called ZA planes kites and that he will sort them out when he wins, this year he says nothing wrong with ZA, just like he has switched sides on Chinese investment.Harrington took siliya to the trbunal and Sata rushed to the Media in suport and organised cadres hoping to claim victory at the end, after reading the tribunal verbatims in the Post he has kept quiet knowing there is no evidence. This is the man who surpoted the third term and later abandoned it,After william Banda took charge of lsk MMD cadres to comfront those from PF,Sata has restrained his and is now preaching peace while preaching violence on the copperbelt

    • The Master Thug (william Banda)is back and Sata Knows he can’t Match him so he has resorted to terrorising the CB. Ifima party fya ba UNIP tule bashila.Come 2011 New breed

    • Ifima party fya ba UNIP he he he he! you are a sharp guy, so you also know that currently, MMD and PF are both behaving like UNIP…Thats no suprise since they are both headed by UNIPists. Viva young turks and new blood!

  19. SATA is part of people who made Zambia so poor now that wecant have sense of coming up with well qualified and knowledgeble responsible leaders to properly change our economy for the benifit of all Zambians.

  20. Zambia Direct Democracy Movement (ZDDM) national coordinator, Edwin Sakala??? These are a bunch of criminals who just emerge to side with politicians in readiness for 2011.

The moment their houses are built, they graduate and start trying to normalize their lives
