MMCI establishes itself in addressing issues of the vulnerable

Share

The Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative (MMCI) says it has in the past five years implemented community driven programmes with special focus on education, women, youth empowerment, water and sanitation among others essential in the country.

The MMCI also says it has established itself as an organization that has well developed competence in addressing issues that affect the vulnerable in society.

This is contained in a report made available in Lusaka today by MMCI programme officer Mildred Chumbwe.

Ms Chumbwe stated that access to drinking water and safe sanitary facilities remain major challenges in most parts of the country adding that existing water and sanitation facilities can not cope with the rapid urban population.

She added that MMCI has built an ablution and sanitation facility at Soweto Market adding that the organization unblocked sewer pipes at the Kapiri-Mposhi Market in order for the people to enjoy health facilities.

Ms Chumbwe said MMCI is doing well in activities such as Goat project with an initial capital of eight million five hundred thousand Kwacha adding that this can purchase about 425 goats at a time.

She added that this was donated to the Choma Environmental Conservation Center to distribute to 17 women’s club in Southern Province with each club getting 25 goats on condition that they transfer the first 25 goats born to another club.

Ms Chumbwe stated that education is considered as a basic right in the country despite its decline over the past two decades.

She however said the MMCI has structured its education component to education sponsorships and support to education in institutions and early childhood care.

  1. No doubt they have done great work but I think it would have been better if a third party (e.g. a donor) had presented this report. That way, it wouldn’t have sounded like self-praise. Just an innocuous hint.

  2. I seek clarification people of my beloved Zambeziland. MMCI was the first lady’s club to supplement the efforts of her husband, like was HOPE Foundation. Has it become a Company now that it has programme Managers etc? Mwabombeni alright, but nalubamo what your role who are you and what are about and who is sustaining you.

  3. Chanda
they are not a company but an NGO. yes its inception was to supplement the Late Levy’s efforts but it doesn’t mean if one dies then everything else associated with him should go too. MCCI just shows that they can survive without relying on GRZ networking. i also think this goes to show that Maureen was not doing this during that time to make a good name of her family but a genuine gesture to help the less privileged.

  4. Whatever the motives behind these nice programmes, I am happy that “Ms Chumbwe stated that education is considered as a basic right in the country despite its decline over the past two decades.

She however said the MMCI has structured its education component to education sponsorships and support to education in institutions and early childhood care” is meant to aknowledge our shortcomings in the Chiluba MMD including the Mwanawasa one. Indeed education is the answer to most of our problems as a county and the earlier we take this matter seriously the better for us. Therefore, let us vote for the educated people who can meet the 21st Century challenges head-on nicely in the 2011 elections.
