FRA completes maize imports

The Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has completed the importation of non GMO maize from South Africa.

FRA Board chairperson Costain Chilala says the agency has imported a total of 35 thousand metric tonnes of maize from South Africa.

Mr. Chilala said the figure represents 97 percent of the contract quantity demanded by government.

He said the successful completion of the exercise shows the capability of the FRA in detecting GMO maize.

The FRA last February detected GMO maize which was imported into the country by GIA International and was subsequently sent back to South Africa under military escort.

The FRA Board chairperson announced this in Lusaka, Friday.

  1. I thought the country just had a bumper harvest? So the govt is comfortable buying maize from South African farmers at K100 000 per 50Kg bag and only K65 000 per 50Kg bag from Zambian farmers. Arent we enriching South African at the expense of Zambian farmers?

  2. for sure our country is run by criminals. I mean why do we have to import when we have a surplus?

  3. Let the Zambian farmers export their produce to destinations of their choice. This will enable them have a profitable price for their produce.

  4. There is something wrong with our govt. I thought we were giving Zimbabwe our maize and yet we are happy to import maize to give away to Zimbabwe. I wished we still militant students who understood issues. This needs to be challended and students would be better placed as a unit because they are facing hardship and yet our govt is happy to feed Zimbabaweans on our imported maize.

  5. RB is Zimbabwean thats why he has the heart for zambabweans than Zambians. We are paying the price for electing a foreigner. Many zambians are facing starvation in cities and rural areas but RB and his corrupt govt decided to start feeding Zims on expense of Zambians. This govt is brainless, lacks vision and contigent plans. Today they buy fikatenga malilo when many hospitals have no Ambulances, medication, shortage plus demoralised workforce. RB has wrong advisors like Teta, Mupo, Shikapwasha the list is endless. It is now Mobile hospitals what a classic example of a failed brainless and toothless govt. Zambia needs men and women with a desire to develop Zambia and save the people. Any failure by this govt Teta has to blame someone who is not in the govt or the late LPM. RB =Teta

  6. RB, You should pray to god to take your life before you live office like late LPM because you risk ending up in courts like Chiluba.

  7. The biggest problem we have is FRA. That institution is a monolithic entreprise which has no horizontal link whatsoever with institutions like NCZ, ZACCI, ZDA and ZNFU. What FRA is doing is promoting outside businesses when we could have our own farmers producing maize which we could export just as the SA farmers are doing. By farmers, I am not referring to peasant farmers as those can be taken care of by theMinistry of Social Welfare since by nature their sort of business thrives on free free things.
