Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) President Stanley Mhango has condemned in the strongest term the hooliganism exhibited by the Patriotic Front (PF) cadres towards their fellow and founder members of the party.
Mr. Mhango said the behaviour by the PF cadres is not in line with democratic principles.
Mr. Mhango stressed that the PF being the largest opposition party in he country, should exhibit exceptional levels of tolerance and promote intra party democratic principles.
He observed that such behaviour may jeopardize the newly formed PF and UPND electoral pact as members of the pact may be suspicious of each for fear of harassment from cadres.
Mr. Mhango expressed disappointment that PF senior leadership has not condemned the violence and harassment against the two founder members, a conduct he said is a sign that the party tolerated such unruly behavior.
He has since challenges the leadership of PF to help police bring to book the perpetrators of hooliganism and violence in their party if the party does not support such behaviour from its cadres.
In a press statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka yesterday Mr. Mhango urged parties to desist from promoting acts of violence and hooliganism in the country.[quote]
He stated that the only crime the victims are alleged to have committed was to call for the long awaited PF convention and observance of the party’s constituent which their right is.
“FODEP is concerned with the rate of political intolerance and undemocratic tendencies practiced by most political parties in the country,’ he stated.
Meanwhile FODEP is however happy that the victims have reported the matter to the police, whose investigations in the matter has commenced.
On Friday a group of PF cadres severely beat up two founder members of the party who called a press briefing to demand for among other things speaking against violence being perpetuated on some members in the party.

No party should get away with the use of violence whether it is in govt or opposition. The opposition should make sure that any act of violence by MMD is recorded and highlighted. Cops arrest 2 PF cadres, hunt for 5 others. POLICE in Lusaka have arrested two Patriotic Front (PF) cadres as PF members of Parliament (MPs) and councillors attending the National Constitutional Conference (NCC) supported calls by some members for the party to hold a national convention.Police arrested the two PF cadres and also launched a manhunt for five others for allegedly assaulting and abducting two founder members on Friday.
Police spokesperson, Bonny Kapeso, who confirmed the arrest of the duo, said in an interview yesterday that the suspects were still detained in police custody pending further investigations.
Mr Kapeso appealed to the five who were on the run to present themselves to Lusaka Central police station or any nearest police station.

I really wonder how PF with the ideology of violence and UPND with one of “Progressive intellectualism” can work together. I want them to pull in one direction, because that is the only way to wrestle power from MMD, but to harmonise these two beliefs is a sure challenge for Sata and HH. I find your reasoning too biased that I can rightly predict that you are on the payroll of the Tetamalilo and Shikapwasha. To all analytical minds, its very clear who sponsored those so called PF cadres. How much money do they have to waste at that plush hotel just to air their grievances? The Post has been complaining of violence being perpetrated against its reporters and newspaper vendors by MMD thugs for a couple of weeks now. Where was FODEP? This lopsided behaviour is not inspiring at all. We should all be worried about the state of our nation as we approach 2011.
