Kitwe City Council to lose over K57m in revenue

Share

Kitwe City Council says it will lose over K57 million in personal levy as a result of job losses in Mopani and Konkola Copper Mines.

Speaking during a special council meeting held in Kitwe today, Kitwe City Council Town Clerk Ali Simwinga says the local authority will lose K57, 150, 000 adding that the global crisis had negatively affected its’s ability to provide services to the public.

The Town Clerk also disclosed that the Council was also facing problems in meeting the worker’s wage bills.

Mr. Simwinga noted that revenue collections had plummeted thereby negatively affecting council’s capacity to deliver services to the resident’s satisfaction.

Mining, the town clerk observed was the economic backbone of Kitwe and that with Mopani Copper mines not mining at full capacity, it was difficulty for the local authority to collect revenue from the mine.

Mr. Simwinga said this had adversely affected the Council in terms of rates and personal levy as the mining companies were the direct payers of the income.

In view of the situation, Mr. Simwinga noted that there was need to diversify Zambia’s economy from mining to Agriculture and Tourism with a view of processing most of the raw materials including copper so that they could be expanded as finished products.

  1. Oh! My home town should not be affected to that extent, Not even all councils please! Bwana TC your council has the best brains I know can pitch good initiatives to the business community for funding. please use them!

  2. Undesirable effects not only to my home town Kitwe but countrywide.

But bwana TC your council has best brains according to my data, why not use them to come up with commercially viable initiatives and pitch them to the business community for funding please? Kitwe City Council has all the savvy leaders in economics, finance, business development, law, the list continues…. use them please and save our beautiful home Kitwe.

  3. If anything, you do not deserve that money because it would have just been misused. What have you been doing with it which you can point out as having been affected? What happens to the money you collect from bus operators and poor bana maliketi when at the same time you continue getting a GRZ grants yet there is no single improvement worth pointing to as what you use the money on?

  4. $10,000 loss for a whole city! Ask the NCC, MP, ministers from that area to help out from their payments.

  5. Let the TC tell us how much the council makes from parking levies and where they take it. Kitwe motorists are now paying K2,000, Lord knows for what purposes because traffic lights in Kitwe are now a traffic hazard. Council is failing to even buy bulbs.
