Poaching increases in Kasanka Trust National Park

Share

Poaching in Kasanka Trust National Park in Serenje district is on the increase despite intervention programmes that the park management has devised to reduce the act.

Park Manager, Edmond Farmer, told ZANIS in an interview yesterday that communities within and outside the park have continued poaching despite the park management putting in place measures to discourage the vice.

Mr. Farmer said poachers were entering the park from all areas, a situation that has made conservation difficult.
He said although tourists visiting the park have increased, it has been difficult to prevent poaching.

He however said the park management would not relent in patrolling the park to protect the animals in the area from extinction.

Mr. Farmer explained that there were a lot of programmes being carried out in communities around the park, which included the construction of a clinic at Chalilo.

He said the park had also allowed pupils in the area to go and view animals.
Among the animals found in the park are elephants, pukus, hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes, baboons and sitatungas.

Mr. Farmer commended the judiciary in Serenje for having played a major role in punishing the people who were arrested for poaching offences.

He however called for a stiffer punishment to be given to poachers to deter others considering illegal hunting in the park.

  1. Some are smearing themselves with human excrates, someone busy touring the continent and the other one busy killing animals illegally, why Zambians?

  2. Please refrain from poaching!! These people are not only killing wildlife but also killing the economy. The government as a whole should come up with effective measures to bring order.
Zambia’s resources must be defended diligently and without compromise if we are to develop our tourism industry.

  3. If the Gov does not give Man enough Money to buy Meat, Man get meat by any measures necessary. , this includes poaching, etc.

  4. # 3 Jamaco, you are wrong man, Govt must give man more money to buy meat. refrain form what ? noti eyo, let them eat Nyama.

  5. There is something wrong the Park Management whilst other palces are recoding reduced poarching activities. It apears Mr. Farmer and his management have not done enough to sensetize the locals on the subject matter. Advocating for stiffer penalties in culprits is not a long tern solution. Perhaps the benefits are not reaching the intended stakeholders i.e the locals.

  6. One of the hard truth is that Mr Farmer himself does not have good rappour with the locals. The relationship between him and the local people is not conducive for conservation efforts.

  7. LET THEM PORCH!!!.. GOVERNMENT AINT GIVING THEM FOOD.. RUPIAH IS EATING GOOD AT STATE HOUSE WHILE INNOCENT ZAMBIANS DIE OF HUNGER SO U CANT KNOCK THE HUSTLE PORCH GUYS PORCH FREE NYAMA!

  8. Have some of you forgotten your social studies in grade 7 to what happens when poaching is not curbed? May i remind you that if a species is wiped out or reduced in number that will affect the ecosystem leading to the death of other animals. If you kill elephants the lions will have nothing to eat and will probably become PF cadres or on serious note die out as well.

  9. Let them porch when your national parks disappear in turn starving humans you will be crying for elections. Just because people are doing wrong you want to fix them by doing more wrong , typical attitude that lands people in even deeper crap. Don’t forget once those animals and national parks disappear not even SATA or whatever election you have in mind cannot be reversed

  10. No# 13 those words are true to the bone. Poaching is like corruption, once you erode rule of law and encourage stealing the ecosystem degenerates inshort the capital funds sustaining industry, salaries, intelligent personal to take flight to green pastures, no wilderbeast to poop loamy enviroments, get the picture.
