Striking Ndola workers reject 15% hike, demand resignation of union leaders

Share

Striking Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education workers in Ndola have asked for the immediate resignation of their National Union leaders who are part of the salary negotiation bargaining team.

ZANIS Ndola reports that the decision was reached at a joint meeting between the Health workers and their Education counterparts at Ndola Basic School this morning.

In a joint resolution read by Zambia National Union of Teachers (ZNUT) Ndola District Chairperson Nibbu Nyasulu and Civil Servant and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (CSAWUZ) Joy Beene, the workers said the leaders in the bargaining team had failed to represent the wishes of grass root members.

Mr. Nyasulu said teachers were passing a vote of no confidence in their representatives at national level.

“As teachers we have resolved to pass a vote of no confidence in our national Union Leaders and we have even resolved that the contributions we make to the unions be withheld immediately,” he said.

He further said the teachers have resolved that government and the bargaining team that had prematurely signed the agreement should immediately re-open the negotiations because teachers in the district would not go back for work unless their demands were met.

And the Nurses who earlier in the day had a meeting at Ndola Central Hospital (NCH) resolved to continue their strike until government awarded them a K1.5m salary increment across the board.

Mr. Beene said the nurses had resolved that their national union leaders should not agree to sign the 15% salary increment because the grass root membership had totally rejected it.

Meanwhile, Mr. Beene has appealed to President Rupiah Banda to have a fatherly heart towards the people who were unnecessarily dying, by awarding nurses their genuine demands so that they could go back to work.

A check at Ndola Central Hospital this morning revealed that management had decided to close down all wards on the Fifth, Fourth and Second floors inlcuding the Gynaecology wards.

  1. Just go back to work. It`s time Zambians learnt to live within their pockets.

  2. #3 Aha! If you are not careful you will find that you go back to Zambia without money! A Phiri anabwela!

  3. The crux of the matter is that if the Goverment were to give the teachers and nurses their genuine demand of an increase of K1.5m across the board plus housing allowance and then we hit an inflation rate of 500% , what will all that money be worth, after a month? We Zambians have painful experience of our currency losing its value. That is why both sides to the negotiations must act responsibly. We have only pain and tears to gain from becoming another Zimbabwe.

  4. I agree with #1 they should go back to work there is no such thing as indefinate strike they need to know that and pic proper meaniful days on which to strike ie labour day, independence celebration because then the government will have no one to parade the street. As things stand it will always look like there is some political motives behind it all. These strikes should have a time frame and possibly properly structure not just mwauka ati am on strike atase

You seem to have some information on this matter the question is how has this been explained to the people involved because i see a situation where knowing zambians its ndefwayafye ndalama nshandi dont cre how you get it mentality. Even with a logicl explanation.
I also have an idea why not give them the 15% then make an agreement that based on economic factore in the country they will have another 15% increament say spread over 3-5 years.

  6. VIVA STRIKE . THEY HAVE TAKEN YOU FOR GRANTED. Raping our money at their will. Dont relent …continue these D.U.L.L. Gonvt should not be spared.

  7. But if the government knows there is no money, then why are the MPs going to be paid their so-called mid-term gratuity and also have this indefinite NCC indaba?
Come on bane, lets be serious.
The government and unions should be negotiating with the “basket of goods” for a family of six in mind.
This cannot be met in full, but salaries should be near to reality.

  8. @Peter Wakulubemba Uko Tucindika Abakalamba and C.I.A
the reason why u are outside is because of the pathetic conditions your friends are fighting for…Do u know how much these MPs and ministers are getting for farting and shitting in these offices whilst doing work grade 1 work?U such silly cows and hypocrites u shud go back and work in Z and see whether u will last a day there, these people have families and need to survive its simple as that,if u read animal farm u will understand my point of view..

  9. Recently MP were given increaments with the reason that the money they used to get was not enough, so what is wrong with Nurses and Teachers getting their share? Give them what they want you thieves. 27 billion lost squandered by few people and when geniune workers demand for their wages you treat them like *****s. Zambia will never develop ever.

  10. How can they go back to work when Govt is not serious and the use of underhand methods is unacceptable. Govt needs to come up with a better offer, and negotiate fairly and genuinely. We zambians workers are not fools. Viva strike.

  11. Pliz all civil servants conitune our strike coz u ve been taken for ride so many times. Govment has money & these guys want it saved for their mid term gratuity of 480million as mps even wen others have just been sleeping with no meaningful work. VIVA STRIKE

  12. How do you resolve a dispute without good faith from the parties involved? Govt is not sincere and is using underhand methods and crookery. Govt need to understand that the zambian worker is not a fool and cannot be taken for a ride. 15% unacceptable, and the union leaders should all resign, after mfuwe, a little corcion and they bulk. Forward with the strike. If the country shall be paralised its the govt leaders call. Workers soliderity. VIVA strike. Infact govt should scrap off the midterm gratuity for MPs, as a good faith measure before before we hear whatever offer they have. VIVA strike!!!!!!

  13. LT what problem are you having, that we are failing to post comments, or is someone moderating? this is iritating!

  14. Countrymen and women as president of Zambia I call upon all striking workers to start operations as my government has decide to scrap all form of taxes to your monthly dues with effect from tonight.

  15. Civil Servants are very right to claim for such an increament un Mr Ruphia Banda and his Parliament also suspend their 100% increament and paying thems huge allowances to show us that there is no money. It is clear that this Financial crisis is real but they increased their allowances. That,s why ,come 2011 All current MPs should,nt be voted back including the MMD. Our country needs a new start,Government and all politicians we need are those who would consider poor people first not who want to enrich thems. Civil servants keep on fighting

  16. Surely, K1.5 million ya fulisha. They’d have to increase PAYE and transfer the cost to everyone else while we’d have career nurses out of hospital driving around and running their little businesses of flying to Dubai. I know for a few nurses that would be close to THE 27bn/pa. But why hold Zambia to ransom? So you can save money to fly to Europe?

  17. VIVA STRIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! VIVA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Civil servants please continue with the strike

  18. What did RB do in his first few days in office? Approve new increased salaries for MP’s! Its now time to take care of our civil servants, they are the back bone of our beloved Zambia. Infact ifima MP and RB should take salary cuts and give that money to the civil servants. That way they will get off their lazy bums and work extra hard to improve living conditions in Zambia. And what can we as a country do to stop these *****s from using public funds to go seek medical care in SA? RB needs to show a little faith in Zambia’s health system, but clearly he knows its all in the toilet! Shame on you ba Rupiah!

  19. Some comments can make one to throw up, for they display an epitome of a true sadist devoid of human face . They would qualify to come from the one cast from heaven with his group.

  20. RB was quick to award politicians and himself huge increment and now is quiet. Why do they want to misuse the civil servant by just giving them a useless 15% pay rise that translates to 150 pin? continue with the strike guys we are behind you. In order to treat us better you need to be paid well

  21. Awe kwena calyafya pa zed.I’m very cynical about Rupiah Banda’s leadership,i would not trust him with my dog.All said all done, eventually the poor are becoming poorer and rich are becoming richer so here we go…….!!!
