ZESCO to buy underwater cameras

Share

ZESCO board has directed management to buy underwater cameras to help detect weed early in the Kafue River.

And Energy Permanent Secretary Peter Mumba, who is also board member, says Zambia is likely to experience power black-outs if the Kafue River is NOT properly managed.

Mr. Mumba said various firms discharge effluent in the Kafue River, which act as manure to the weed.

The Kafue weed recently affected equipment at Kafue Hydro-power station causing massive blackouts country-wide.

  1. Dont we have a water and sewarage department to deel with weed problems or a ministry of agriculture. You will hear tha one camera costed $20 000. Impupu

  2. But why cant they just set maintenance days? weed will always grow in kafue whether they install cameras or not.

  3. #2 Joyce, you see what the ps is talking is sophisticated equipment and not a simple camera like the one on your phone. actually that equipment can cost much more than your estimated $20,000. there is no impupu about it, you can contact potential suppliers yourself or browse through trade catalogues or the internet. this habit of ignorant individuals trashing all good ideas meant to benefit society is just nauseating.

  4. This weed must be on steriods to need camera’s to detect . What about other options of river divers, marine biologists tests, chemo tests, water testing et al. This is probably another pointless exercise to siphon money into the pockets of unscrupulous zesco management and suppliers. Choices like this should only be made once all remedies are exhausted

  5. The idea of installing underwater camera is absolutely good but let’s just hope its installation will not degenerate into successive and prolonged blackouts.Otherwise, bakatwebele limo so that tukapangile limo bakoloboyi pantu isha candle shena tashakamoneke.

  6. This is just typical crap! Ni chamba ichi. Thats the problem. They are watching too many hollywood movies. And i supose they are going to employ some people to just sit in front of the cameras the whole day and watch as the weeds are growing! Not forgetting the hefty salaries…at our expense! Ni chamba ichi!

  7. Cud someone there tell us what has happened to the power starting at 20:20 hours this evening? We seem not to be able to get through to the ZESCO National Call Centre

  8. The problem we have pa ZED is that we have thrown preventative maintenance to the dogs. Where was ZESCO management? The clearing of weeds is supposed to be done periodically to prevent them chocking the turbines. Now they want to waste money on cameras. God help us

  9. #3 I agree with you.

cameras cannot remove weeds. It will be a waste of money. Let ZESCO use its employees or contractors to clear the weeds on a daily basis. Weed is their greatest threat at the moment.
One does not need to see something before acting! They don’t need a camera to control weeds, they need dredging machine. Okay, they will install a camera and see the weed, so what next?
