The National Initiative for Citizen’s Awareness (NICA) has strongly condemned the beating up of two women by a mob of Kitwe residents on suspicion that the duo were witches.
NICA president Kelvin Sampa described the actions of the mob as barbaric and unacceptable.
Mr. Sampa has since appealed to the National Constitutional Conference (NCC) to include laws that would punish witch doctors that prescribe unorthodox means to their clients.
He said there is also need to spearhead sexual and gender based violence campaigns by local communities in order for them to understand the importance of laws and human rights.
Mr. Sampa urged relevant authorities to arrest and charge the culprits for murdering one of the woman and attempting to burn her body.
The NICA president has since warned citizens in the country to desist from taking the law into their own hands as doing so will equally result in their prosecution.
An unidentified woman in Kitwe was on Thursday beaten to death by an angry mob who also attempted to burn her body on allegations that she was practicing witchcraft.

This was on 19hrs news. For those of you who watched it would agree with me, it was inhuman. Even if someone is a witchcraft really shouldn’t given such a punishment. Judgement/vengeance is for the Almight.
If witchcraft does exist, can it be proved in court using our conventional justice system? While people taking the law in their own hands is not acceptable, we need to find a formula to diagnose witchcraft and outline punitive measures as a form of redress.
There is no witchcraft, its all just primitivity!
i believe witchcraft do exists. but such mob justice isn’t the best solution.
Witchcraft exists. The only person I know to have done some reasonable research on the subject was an artist called Henry Tayali (sp). He once held an exhibition at UNZA library displaying all sorts of tools of the witchcraft world with detailed explanations. Unfortunately he died suddenly – witchcraft?!??
Witches and wizards are made in Luapula. Be careful if you visit the province! The other place is Petauke in Eastern and followed by Senanga in Western. Be careful!
Very sad indeed it is like mob justice is still happening pa Z with people taking the law into their hands over some cheap suspicion, after all even if those women were”witches” they could still come handy in promoting african science, too bad amake harry potter bapaya
#6 I am from petauke. There is no witchcraft. Many people talk about it and fear it; That does not make it existant. No can ever prove witchcraft. You will never meet a person who has been confronted first hand; It is always I heard. And by the way, the chewa in katete are supposed to be the masters and not the nsenga.
Its unbelievable in this age and era.
The culprits should face the law.
This headline….what else can a witch be but FEMALE? If it were a man he would have been a wizard.
All should be arrested and set an example of period.
#8.agnostic. Good to hear your view, but I am speaking from personal experience and what I have heard from people I worked with. We had some work at Nyampande village, we sent a guy there with his wife. He was told (by the locals) to send his wife away and marry from within or else his wife will die. He held on, his daughter died within the first month, in the nite he will hear people beating drums, but could not see the drumers. The following month his wife became sick, he had to leave…same true stories in Luapula and Senanga. Good weekend to you all.
# 10 is right!!!!!!! ba LT pliz chisungu!!!!!! who edits da articles?????????????
Back to da issue, since witchcraft can’t be proven in da courts of law will form a commission (as we always do) comprising of 9 witchdoctors (i.e 1 from each province,2 lawyers and also a judge).
Very sad indeed. I watched it on the 19hrs bulletin couldnt believe such kind of babaric act by fellow human beings.
i don’t believe in witchcraft .those people should face the law to kill innocent women.how come Africa is still poor ?if we had magic to develop we would have used witchcraft..people who believe in witchcraft are uneducated.
What do you make of the numerous incidences of individuals who have crash landed stark naked in the wee hours of the morning on people’s rooftops on account of having ran out of ‘fuel’?
For you who still doubt witchcraft, its real.Jesus once asked,”you foolish Galatians, who witched you?”. In Zambia we have several “schools of natural sciences” in different parts of the country.these include among others Mununga in Luapula, Kalabo and Lukulu in Western province, one in petauke in Eastern province and one in Mwinilunga in N/Western province. Southerners in Mapanza also have one. Since the witchcraft Act seems to protect the practice, personally i do not completely condemn mob justice. My granddad was a wizard who used the science on development purposes such as enhancing agric productivity, rain making etc
Ba #16, they say seeing is beleiving. Iam yet to see one to believe. Hearsay is no good proof at all.
# 18. Mrs. Stevens. These stories have been reported through oral tradition and by the media. I am not surprised though. Who said there shall only be the biblical doubting Thomas?
Balichita fye bwino, witch craft is bad, have you heard of stories were one is bewitched for having a good A:S:S That is backwardness we need nice A:SSES in society, And here is one person who is De-assing the community for selfish motives. Those who love booties should support the mob for doing justice we need more AS;SES and less witchcraft
