The planned peaceful demonstration by a consortium of 18 Civil Society Organizations against the acquittal of former president Fredrick Chiluba failed to take place in Solwezi yesterday.
The demonstration which was scheduled to commence at 09: 00 hours from Yummilicious bakery to the Provincial Administration where they were to present a petition to Provincial Minister could not take place and has since been postponed to Wednesday October 21st.
Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) Northwestern Provincial Coordinator Fredrick Nabanda told ZANIS in an interview that they could not go on with the demonstration because they were informed that some people were planning to disrupt them.
Mr Nabanda said they were compelled to postpone the demonstration to give time to the Police to put security measures in place and that the Minister Joseph Mulyata was not around to receive the petition as he was in Lusaka attending Parliament seating.
He said the demonstration should not be seen as a fight against the government or President Chiluba adding that those intending to disrupt them are not being fare.
Mr Nabanda said it is a constitutional right for any citizen to peacefully express displeasure at the way things were being done and this should not be infringed.
He said the civil society will again write to office of the Commanding Officer to notify him of the new day for the demonstration.
ZANIS
Go Go forward maybe that way GRZ will listen and put people power in front
Well,it is the right of every citizen to express displeasure to wot is seen as wrong doings by the government and certain judgments passed. But it’s also important to evaluate our motives behind the Demo’s.My heart tells me the government was right though my head still questions the integrity of our leaders together with the system at hand.RB was presented with an opportunity he could not deny and was is the fourth president of our beloved Zambia though he may be bad in his doings or not i can not personally hate him, the man had no agenda but to live on a dream he never had.history has always taught as a lot which we can lean from but be optimistic about the future.Let us work on solution rather than pointing fingers at who did wot.May GOD BLESS my beloved country and the good people.
That is the end of this particular episode of Zambian politics. This is a shameful flop and there will be no more talk of demos. Reason: it does not have the support of the people that the NGOs claim to represent.
Demos or no demos, the MMD is on its way out. Kuya bebele.
MMD is going out. Signs are on the doors of Zambia. KUYA BEBELE MMD
