“Don’t politicize Agrippa’s funeral,” Grey Zulu’s family appeals to politicians

Share

Veteran politician Grey Zulu’s family has appealed to politicians not to politicize the funeral of late Mr. Agrippa Zulu son to Mr. Grey Zulu.

Family Spokesperson and a cousin to the deceased, Fisho Mwale says contrary to assertions by some politicians, his family has received a lot of support from government.

He says government has supported the family by providing food and will transport the remains of the deceased back home from London where he died.

Mr. Mwale, who is also former Lusaka Mayor, said in an interview with ZANIS at the funeral house that President Rupiah Banda and government have been kind enough and taken interest in the matter.

Mr. Mwale said the President also appointed Lands Minister Peter Daka to co-ordinate and facilitate the funeral procession.

He further said the statement attributed to his uncle, Grey Zulu was and carried by the Post Newspaper in today’s edition was taken out of context.

Mr. Mwale said it was unfortunate that the reporter took advantage of his uncle’s emotions.

He stated that the late Agrippa should be mourned in dignity and respect without the involvement and influence of politicians.

“Only an insane person can celebrate and feast during mourning periods. It is very unfair to speak to a father with bereavement and take a statement that is heavily negative and misinterpreted. My Uncle did not utter such a statement. It was taken out of context taking advantage of Mr. Zulu who is emotional.

As a family, we had received a lot of assistance from the Government including from selfless Zambian citizens. As you know my uncle was actively involved in government as Vice President and secretary General of UNIP,” Mr. Mwale said.

The late Agrippa died in Britain after an illness.

Meanwhile, the body of the late Agrippa Zulu arrives in the country on Saturday.

Burial arrangements will be announced in due course.

  1. Post must apologise & Sata oloso! Let us give due respect to people in mourning. Conventional wisdom dictates that you don’t take what berieved people say literally, more so when coming from such a very old man like Grey.

  2. THE POST IS A GOOD PAPER. JUST WRITE WHAT ITS TOLD. Mr.Mwales’ statement does not deny that Mr.Zulu mentioned those things. he mentioned them while he was emotional. So the post wrote the truth

  3. We’ve had it with this Homo Meembe! Wat a disgrace to journalism. He’s so hell bent on tarnishing the image of govt at the expense of professional Journalism. And ba sata: what a discrage. trying to gain political mileage pa malilo sure. Shame old man!

  4. Lelo lelo, lelo….Ahhhh Meembe mwafaula….you picked the wrong person….Ahhh Zulu is an old, emotional he has just lost his child, and the you send another cenile old man to go do politics. I suggest that it is time we accept that there is no room for old politicians, who cant respect bereavement. Its shocking becoz such behaviour would be expected from younger people notti akulu monga a Sata…..and ahhh meembe. Shame on you Sata and Meembe for that article in that unreliable tabloid.

  5. Sata’s attempt of gaining mileage from another’s bereavement disgusting to the bone. We like you sata, but apa peve mwa faula baba! Continue like this, you’ll start exposing your dementia!

  6. Reading through the comments one will realizes that Zambians are too traditional and full does and donts which are no longer relavant in the modern society. I remember when i was a kind. We use to stand in repect of car carying a body even vehicles used to stop and cant even over take.

  7. I don’t care much about The Post and its very amateurish reporting, so I didn’t read the story. But if “Arosou” wants peace, grant him his wish. He’s one of those few from KK’s ironfisted dictatorship that have repented. Remember, aroso, that Sata is a cheap stone-thrower from the same regime as Arosou’s.

  8. Glad to see the “have fun” is up there – anytime anyone shows any kind of emotions that might be associated with “fun” people call them slackers or lazy, which is not always the case (I am not talking about the slackers who actually do nothing, I am talking about those who balance work and fun).

  9. Post is not missleading the masses, they are just telling it like it is. If you don’t like it don’t read its simple as abc.

  10. I dont understand your thinking you guys who have negative attitude towards post and sata, because without these people you could have not known anything in terms of theft that MMD has brought, you couldnt be ahead without post so in my understanding you are not greatful.Grey Zulu said like that who can deny it and the reporter picks what is true, infact its that reaction which has prompted govt to react as if they cared. If you see what post start as eye catcher govt gets it and put it as if it was not like that.I see you need papers like times?Foolish zambians wakeup!

  11. Mr. Grey Zulu former Vice president of Zed ion the KK, said the MMD treated him like a criminal.I do not thinks a reporter just made the story but got it from mr. Grey Zulu personally.
The Post i read alot and support a sa cutomer has made Zed population know what is hapening around GRZ and workers that are in control, i rember when we where growing up w eahd only times and daily mail those that where reading will agree with me, they never used to write more to make the pipo know but to inform you about what KK and UNIP has done ONLY

  12. Call a spade a spade, if you did read what was said in the post, whether it is truth or not…..the moment was inappropriate for a politician to use it as political mileage. A respectful person will wait at an appropriate time and raise such issues. what would have been more appropriate was that as a fellow old man Sata should have simply done his contributions and then raise his worries when the mourning period is over. Truth be told, so much is misinterpreted in the post…..the good thing with life is that you may be quick to condemn not knowing where your friend is coming from, you will only understand the repurcassions of been misqouted by a tabloid like the post, when you are subjected to it….the Ngoni’s say chaona muzanko mailo chilipali iwe…

  13. It is undeniable fact that the POST sometimes carry false and sensational lead stories just to stimulate sales.Amos Malupenga admitted this when he was interviewing Regina Mwanza for a lifestyle article in SUNDAY POST.The POST had pupported that regina and Chiluba were in Japan when he(Amos as the reporter) 100% knew that she is in ndola. He just laughed and apologised. This is the POST for you.I used to like the paper but I hate the dictator or is it the editor-in-chief.he always has an hidden agenda.he did the same to the late LPM until he succeeded in curving him in.

  14. The report from The Post was quite misleading – it seems the Zambian government has done a lot for the breaved family. Conolensces.

  15. Shame on desperate Sata and embattled Mmembe’s school yard ghetto journalist.Their ignorance of the Ngoni spirit is pathetic. You will never succeed in waging a Ngoni against another Ngoni because the bonds are naturally unbreakable. Who are these animals when they are the same ones calling for the blood of easterners on every twist and turn? Sata is the one that moved the motion in parliament never to have Grey Zulu get his terminal benefits but all veteran.Until today Grey Zulu is not paid his terminal benefits despite being a veteran that served this country the longest as Home Affairs minister, Defence, Agriculture, Cooperatives and Prime Minister. Failed strategy to win the Eastern solidarity.

  16. That is why I welcome the whole media self regulation issue. A newspaper has to adhere to certain ethical standards and reporting guidelines. Otherwise, we’ll just be having such unprofessional tabloid material from the Post!

  17. I am a pariot in the UK – if I died here would I aroso be taken home to Zambia for burial? I don’t think so. Is it because I am not a criminal, unlike Grey Zulu? Or is it because I have no cousen named Fisho? Or is it because I am not Ngoni? If Agrippa was a destitute in the UK, then the nation should be informed as the reason his remains are being transported home. Or if he was brought for treatment to the UK on GRZ expense, then he remains can be transported back home. Other than that, Aprippas death and transportation nd burial back home is a private matter. Or is Agrippa aroso entitled to a state funeral? How old was he, anyway. My guess is Agrippa was at least 60 years old! So he should be able to fund his own funeral.

  18. ThePatriot,

That is your under 5 age opinion you are entitled to but without an audience.Grey Zulu deserves these privileges from the Zambian taxpayers.Just like you have vested all your time in blogging insults and reading the tabloid sensational ghetto reporting, your harvest will come from there. Grey Zulu was # 2 to KK and sacrificed his life for this country. He is not a Chintu wamba like you an armchair critic.

  19. It seems people are just still used to reading ” IMBILA and ICENGELO for sure. How can anybody blame the post `s imformation in this gerneration? The paper that even politicians themselves depend on?

  20. Their ignorance of the Ngoni spirit is pathetic and self damaging. Ngonis are the most cultured people who respect the elders give a special place to those who gave their best to the country.
These desperadoes must know by now that they will never succeed in waging a Ngoni against another Ngoni because the bonds are naturally unbreakable. Who are these animals when they are the same ones calling for the blood of easterners on every twist and turn? Sata is the one that moved the motion in parliament never to have Grey Zulu get his terminal benefits but all veterans just because himself was just a vigilante in UNIP. Until today, Honorable Grey Zulu is not paid his terminal benefits despite being a veteran that served this country the longest as Home Affairs Minister, Defense, Agriculture,…

  21. #2 SHARP SHOOTER
Is the Russian winter taking a toll on you dear? what are going to say when the Post publishes verbatim statement from comrade Zulu? I dont not think Post would write what wa Zulu did not say, they have been the business for a long time. wait for their response tomorrow. As for Fisho he’s been waiting for an opportunity to get back into the papers. By the way who appointed you to be a spokesman and why only for the famous? shameless opportunist.

  22. Mr Zulu, you have learnt a lesson, do NOT speak to Sata when he comes to you again, especially if he comes under the auspices of the post newspaper.

  23. Its about time that we built strong institutions and not personalities, its the only way our democracy will be entrenched. we can’t allow the whims of leaders to rob people of what’s legally theirs. Mr Sata, Banda, whoever becomes next president will do their legacies good by entrenching democracy through strong independent institutions, then great men like Mr Zulu would be receiving their pensions. Mr Zulu, a humble, loyal, patriotic fighter for the indepence from racial colonialism that we enjoy deserves better. he is a national hero. let this remind our leaders to correct the course of our democracy

  24. #26(Mala msana wandalama)
In fact here in Russian,we would say its still VIESINO(Automn).Tell me what Elias Mpondela complained of ,together with Sebastian Kopulande regarding the statements they made on Radio Phoenix.Verbatims were there and proved the opposite but the damage was already done.Where are the ethics then?

  25. The Real World (No. 23):

What exactly is it that Grey Zulu sacfriced for Zambia? Oh, sorry I forgot, he did so much that people like you can be illegal in America, mopping floors at McDonalds or cleaning some old people. Grown ups should fund their own funerals. It’s different if it Grey who had died – he is entitled to a state funeral for merely being SG. What wbout you – can you afford your own funeral of you aroso have a famous father and hope to be brought home when you die because you cannot afford to bury yourself? What exactly do you do in America – you seem to love handouts! I was in America for school

  26. Rupiah Banda hope for Zambia

The conduct of former Defence minister George Mpombo is disappointing to say the least.

When he resigned from government Mr Mpombo told the nation that he wanted to concentrate on environmental issues in his constituency.

But even before he stepped foot there, he started attacking President Rupiah Banda in newspapers and on radio.

Now what makes this whole affair very funny is that on one hand Mr Mpombo is blaming Mr Banda’s advisors and on the other, he is blaming Mr Banda over the holding of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) convention.

So we fail to understand what his problem is.

  27. Govt knows that Zulu’s son does not deserve a state funeral and they have not offered one. Now our i.m.b.e.c.i.l.e.s in the opposition are trying to make points by mourning that he needs special treatment. What a wasteful govt it will be if they get in power

  28. And the media instead of reminding or confronting Mr Mpombo on his inconsistent statements he has become their darling.

Mr Mpombo was not fired. Neither was he forced to resign from Cabinet. He did so on his own with a hidden agenda to cause confusion in the MMD.

In fact he planned his movements a long time ago and probably the aim was to embarrass the president through acts of subversion.

Mr Mpombo knows very well that Mr Banda has not said the convention will be postponed and neither is he afraid of standing against anyone who may wish to contest but each day he keeps insulting Mr Banda and the MMD membrs.

  29. Mr Banda should be praised because he has proved to be very resilient even in the face of a dirty campaign.Late president Levy Mwanawasa like President Chiluba listened to God and exactly did a good job to allow Mr Banda to serve in a senior office.

Whoever is behind Mr Mpombo is an enemy of democracy and development. You cannot have a situation where a former minister who has sworn an oath of allegiance is persistently insulting those in authority.

And opposition political parties that are getting excited with Mr Mpombo’s utterances should be careful. They may end up embracing bad eggs.

  30. After reading the story in post newspaper about Mr Zulu’s complaint, i think the post just reported exactly what Mr Zulu talk about, he personally said that the government treat him as a criminal. So dont run away from the truth by condenming mr Sata and the post for publishing the story. The truth hates anyway.

  31. ‘Zambia expects over K70 trillion in GDP’

ECONOMICS Association of Zambia (EAZ) former national secretary Chibamba Kanyama has said Zambia will expect more than K70 trillion in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) with the 6.3 per cent growth rate.

The Central Statistical Office (CSO) had last week announced that the country’s economy was expected to grow by 6.3 per cent mainly due to the growth in agriculture, mining and quarrying and fishing and forestry sectors.

  32. According to Kanyama, the growth of the economy was welcome news not only to the government but the private sector as well given the background of the economic global crisis that hit the country.

“The coming on board of Lumwana Mine may have compensated for losses incurred by mining companies early this year,” he said. “This also means we will expect more than K70 trillion in GDP next year as the growth rate for 2009 should have an impact on the growth rate for 2010.”

  33. Kanyama explained that a sustainable and meaningful growth rate should reflect a diversified economy and biased towards value adding sectors such as manufacturing.

“It should also reflect growth in sectors with a huge impact to business linkages, government revenue, foreign exchange earnings and employment,” said Kanyaama.

  34. Zambian minister sees bright future of Zambia-China economic zone (Excerpted)

Zambian Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Felix Mutati is confident that the Zambia-China Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone (ZCCZ), the country’s first ofits kind, is being constructed well with a bright future.

The ZCCZ, which Zambians call Chambishi Multi-Facility Economic Zone (CMFEZ), is the first overseas economic and trade cooperation zone set up by China. It marks the fulfilment of one of the commitments by China at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in 2006.

  35. “Although Multi-Facility Economic Zone is a new kind of concept to Zambia, we believe we can benefit from China’s achievement and its experience in developing Multi-Facility Economic Zones, ” Mutati told Xinhua in an recent exclusive interview.

Mutati said CMFEZ was launched in February 2007, and that it has attracted 13 companies to set up base in the zone with an investment of more than 800 million U. S. dollars in the past two years, creating more than 4,000 jobs for Zambia people.

“I went to China to have a visit of the Multi-Facility Economic Zones in China this July. Their achievements shocked me, and made me become more confident that the CMFEZ in Zambia will surely be a success, ” Mutati said.

  36. The minister told Xinhua that the Zambian government has put the plan of the construction of the road linking the Lusaka International Airport with CMFEZ Lusaka Sub-Zone into the suggestion of the 2011 budget, which shows the Zambian government’s firm support to the development of CMFEZ.

Mutati also promised that the Zambian government will consider revising the relevant regulations and laws to facilitate the development of CMFEZ.

  37. Grey was responding to Sata’s irrational questions like ‘can George Kunda be vice president without you?’ The man had to say something and without knowing Sata’s plan, he said what he said as an expression. He is mourning his son and it is normal to feel helpless and utter such desperate words, in psychology the phenomena is called ‘catastrophising’.

  38. #18 – There was nothing misleading in the post. Everything said by Mr. Sata was in the presence of Mr. Grey Zulu and was recorded. All the decent help and attention from the Government was the aftermath following Sata’s complaints. Mr Zulu did say the current govt does treat him like a criminal and now that they are showing respect Sata should be thanked.

  39. There is clearly something very wrong about African politics, most people, including well educated ones, would rather flow with the tide of tribal bigotry than than of intellectual reasoning. We all know what the Post wrote were direct quotes from the good old Gile and to claim that they are trying to distort facts is forked thinking that in my opinion amounts to S.T.U.P.I.D.I.T.Y. The government is in damage control mode and all with any semblence of a reasonable sane mind can see this. Besides, why should the govt. pay for shipping Agripa’s remains back home? I also did not know the Mwales Zulus, Bandas, Kaundas etc are all related. Now this is a family baobad tree we are talking here.

  40. It is sometimes disheartening to listen to Kabamba Chinyama rave about economics that he clearly has very little understanding about. With economics like these, no wonder Zambia shall always dwell in the economic doldrums. Any economist worth his salt will tell you that for an underdeveloped economy like ours with a chronic shortage of expert labour, it will be a mission in futility to embark on reserving all energy on value adding sectors such as manufacturing where developed countries and the likes of South Africa have massive economies of scale to produce the same goods much cheaply. We have areas of strength such as farming and mining we ought to concentrate on before value adding sectors this boys is dreaming about.

  41. So abena Fisho Mwale are still alive ka? I thought I did hear year back that he kicked the bucket! I once met him in Boston where he was cleaning plates in a restaurant after he lost his governorship of Lusaka. Now he is a family spokesman for Agripa trying to do some damage control between Kanitundila and Mzee Gile Alroso Zulu, good luck. I hope the next I will hear is that Kansundila has appointed you damage control induna.

  42. #47, Interesting that you finally open enough to let the Zambians know what line of business you are in. The only way a person can mingle with kitchen staff is if he is one as well, guests dont usuallly mingle with such people…my conclusion is that, you must have been right next to him either mopping the floors or doing dishes too! A man will do whatever he can to survive!

I think people here are simply saying, a right minded person would see the politicising of that funeral in the post, fact is post does sensationalise stories, and it was wrong for the future president to utter such remarks during this period. The truth usually is a hard pill to swallow, sometimes its best to take some criticism and accept you are wrong, no matter how much you love meembe and his tabloid, and the…

  43. If the POST published false hoods this time it could have been liquidated through litigations. But because it reports the truth(sometimes verbatim) it has survived and continues to expose acts which otherwise the GRZ press would not dare even hint on. The oldman should not be afraid of being victmised, but should just stand by what he had previously said. By the way can any explain how and why 10s of billions were spent on LPMs funeral?

  44. #47 Fisho Mwale was never Governor, he was the 1st Mayor of LUSAKA under MMD. Get your facts right. Idont support his statement, but I cannot let you write lies about him.

  45. Ba Sata …Gile is regarded as criminal for what? You fool you mean the govt is suppose to buy firewood for Gele oloso!!!my foot. Govt has nothing to do with the funeral of Gile’s son. As our tradition demands Kanitundila and a few Ministers will visit the funeral home. full stop. when GILE passes on . yes then we can have a State Funeral. I think this Sata type of politics of stone throwing and hacking people and is too Bembaish……

  46. What is Fisho Mwale talking about. GRZ has acted after the “POST” brought this matter to the attention of the public. The have recated to save face. The statement that the reporter took advantage of olf Gillies’ emotions does not hold water. Let us mourn Agripa, yes in dignity but the truth still stands.

  47. Emotional or not the fact stil remains those words came out of Mr. Zulu’s mouth and the post did its job and we read it period . Now that Mr. Mwale has received a brown evelop from gov he wants to hide the true………..

  48. This h.o.m.o.s.e.x.u.a.l fred mmembe has no heart. Sata, grey zulu is your age mate yet you think like your time won’t come. The PF is full of all the kaponyas from MMD. Gbm,nsanda, sata, mumbi phiri, wats the diference. Might as well vote for an independent from angola.
You people in the diaspora, are newspapers there as pathetic as ours? To they attack isues, events or people. Im of the opinion that they maybe biased but not petty. And they dont have perverts posing as photographers.

  49. attach a cost of transporting agrippa’s body, allowances and other logistics. we need to know as a nation. The other day we were given a figure of 19 billion kwacha.

  50. There you go again #55 so called UNZA. Was Mmembe your homo boy friend who spurned you? It appears you are also homo to know another homo.

  51. The POST have lost it.there mode of reporting nowadays leaves a lot to be desired.they are now story tellers “utushimi”.there agenda of proping up one michael sata whom they had scorned all along as a villain all along is terrible shit.they only solace is that no matter how they prop him up for him to win an election ni mwala.

  52. SEBULONI KAMUTANDA,
You are probably talking about another FISHO MWALE. not the son of ambassador SITEKE MWALE and former mayor of lusaka.the FISHO MWALE we know is the gentle man who unlike you is well off and has invested a lot in property around lusaka. You might have met him in boston for sure since he has travelled widely but him washing plates is an exergeration.unlike your father mr siteke mwale eked a noble honesty living in early kaunda days when corruption was abhored.and he invested a lot in his childrens education.that’s why unlike you fisho mwale is a red carpet gentleman who doesn’t even have time to waste gossiping on this ka blog.landeniko fimbi batata.

  53. #51RB Its unfortunate that the only Bemba’s you know are stone throwers, clearly you have not met well meaning hard working dignified Bembas.

  54. Leave ba Sata out, he wasn’t the one interviewing Gile, they Post just captured the pic and the reporter interviewed Gile

  55. I wish the Post could stop publication for a month so that you i d i o t s could see what would become of Zambia. Your Times and Daily is always in a reacting mode. Tell your friends Times and Daily to also originate and not always react.

  56. What the post printed was a quote of what Grey Zulu said. If you notice Fisho Mwale’s statement, he does not disagree, but attributes it to his Uncle being emotional at the time. Well and good, that is a well thought out response from Fisho. It shows that he learnt the art of diplomacy from his father well. However, for people to say the post should not print what is said at a funeral is total nonsense. Lets not hide behind tradition for refusing to reform. Should the government pay for Aggripas’ evacuation? If him and his family cannot afford it, then a BIG yes! But this should be done for every Zambia dying abroad, and co-ordinated by embassies (and not politicised!)

  57. # 64 that is the best comment. Many Zambians have died closer to home in Botswana, South Africa, etc the GRZ has not produced even a ngwee to help. Some have ended up being buried in those countries. But in this particular case the GRZ has to foot the bill of transporting the body to Zambia. Double standards indeed. Those who are against the Post are either unreasonable or mad. The Post is the ONLY paper that unearths scandals in Zambia. Apparently Zambians do not know what is good for their country, no wonder it is one of the lousiest countries to live in in the SADC region.
