Science Technology and Vocational Training Minister Gabriel Namulambe says scientists in the country should ensure that scientific knowledge is used properly to find solutions for the country’s challenges.

Mr. Namulambe said though scientific and technological advances have opened up many opportunities much more is needed to ensure national development. He noted that there is need for the science community to help find appropriate solutions to the many problems the country is currently facing especially in the fight against poverty, energy sector, housing and management of the environment that are encountered in all societies in different forms and degrees.

The Minister said this in Lusaka yesterday when he officially closed the 7th National Science and Technology Forum.

And speaking earlier, Zambia Open University Deputy Chancellor Dr Henry Kaluba said the biggest challenge the country is facing is the transformation of the current education system to meet the needs of science and technology development.

Dr. Kaluba said there is need for the nation to take critical examination of the philosophy, vision and strategy of science and technology in the education system of the country as it is going to be the basis of knowledge for the future.

This years Science and Technology theme was “Science, Technology and Innovation: Knowledge for the Future.

  1. Did someone mention to you that costs money? I bet you guys will be willing to spend looking at what the head of state said about TF. You have to be prepared to spend but I doubt you will from what I heard. Sometimes you have to spend more than you reap but that`s the way it goes I am afraid.

  2. The challenge we are facing is the transformation of our education system in Zambia as mentioned by the scientist. Our education system is not only outdated but has alot of irrelevancies in it. South Africa have had to change education system 3 times now. And mind you standards in South Africa are set by the manufacturing industries through bodies such as MERSITA, etc and not the government. The government should pump in adequate finance and set this as priority 1. Aimless travelling is not a priority for this nation. At tertially level, modullar type of training is emphasised as opposed to to conventional type. It carries alot of impact and is beneficial to both the learner and the employer.

  3. Are they saying this just for the sake of having said something? Like #1 has said, scientific projects, technology investments and Innovation cost huge ammounts of money and require professional expertise: this is what we need to acquire first before we can start talking about the furher issues.

  4. I disagree with shi Chale. What you need first workable blue print that will spell out what you need to achieve, by what period of time, what sort of tools you require. Then you can look at your deficience and address it.
