MMD national secretary Katele Kalumba says the MMD already has an existing strategic management programme and has dismissed assertions that he is not concerned about the alleged declining fortunes of the ruling party.
Reacting to MMD parliamentary chief whip Vernon Mwaanga’s sentiments that he should be concerned about the declining fortunes of the MMD, Dr Kalumba said he has noted Mr Mwaanga’s reaction.
“I have great respect for Honourable Mwaanga and perhaps he has misread the intent of my statement but I do respect his opinion,” Dr Kalumba said.
He maintained that the strategic meeting held at Andrews Motel in Lusaka was not an official MMD function and that it was not sanctioned by his office.
“We have a programme on the strategic management of the party and suggestions that we are not concerned about the declining fortunes of the party because of the two losses (Kasama Central and Solwezi Central by-elections) are a bit unfortunate,” Dr Kalumba said.
But Mr Mwaanga said there are many party officials both at senior and junior levels who are concerned about the MMD.
He said MMD’s loss in the Kasama by-elections did not bother him because it was a Patriotic Front (PF) seat and not an MMD one.[quote]
He described the loss in the Solwezi Central parliamentary election as a reality check for the MMD.
“But this is not the first time the MMD has lost one of its seats.
“We have lost some in the past but we reorganised and refocused to take the seats,” Mr Mwaanga said.
And Mr Mwaanga said the Litunga of Western Province was not part of the discussion at the meeting as alleged by some sections of the media.
“No one mentioned the name of the Litunga because that workshop had nothing to do with the Litunga,” Mr Mwaanga said
He said any suggestions that the Litunga was a subject at the MMD strategic planning workshop will be the work of enemies of the MMD.
“I am happy that there is a strategic planning programme on cards. We are anxious to see it work because the party has been silent without any activity. I have been national secretary before and the respect for Dr Kalumba is mutual,” Mr Mwaanga said.
He, however, said his concern for the party overrides the respect.
“I am looking forward [to a time] when he [Dr Kalumba] will announce plans to revive and reactivate our party. It was not just Solwezi but all parts of the country because there has been disquiet among party members about the lack of party activity countrywide except when there is an election,” Mr Mwaanga said.
He said he has received a lot of messages from senior party officials supporting his sentiments.

Well there is still time. They have to tell the public of their achievements – economic growth, decline in the number of people getting infected with HIV and the availability of ARVs across the country, investment in education, increase in agricultural production to name a few. This is mid-term so it understandable that voters want to protest against the government. The opposition also have to pull their socks up and come up with tangible new ideas. It is not enought to just want to get rid of the MMD.
Looks like VJ is campaigning for SC position at their undecided convention. He lost this position to Katele last time.

As an outsider, I can only offer my 2 ngwee’s worth. Go for a convention and your fortunes will chnage. Mass events where there are party faithfuls gathered in one place to thrash out strategy with the foot soldiers do strengthen and not weaken parties. Even churches and christian organisations do this. There is some spirit at mass events that galvanises and energises people. If there is any money to spend, it will be worth spending it on the convention and not on the hated helicopter fly overs by the President and government vehicle rides by party officials and ministers during election campaigns. Thrash out a manifesto. Show where we are and where we are going. Otherwise, it will be bye bye in 2011!

Free advice to the UPND/PF Pact (Or is it PF/UPND Pact): This is the time to go flat out in the rural areas and sensitise the people. Do not wallow in the results of the two parliamentary by-elections for 2011 is far and the MMD may recover.
VIVA PF/UPND Pact for the Solwezi by-election. However, if you have to win 2011 polls, we need know by now is the leader of the pact. It is only now and not later.
Like before the MMD convened the just ended Suresh Desai Strategic Planning Workshop and after its successful ending, i unflinchingly support the initiative for reasons i have since started started articulating these leaders. As a patriotic democrat like many out there, my position has been that MMD indeed need re-electrifying its structures, reactivate its machinery and links. Thus the meet-up was a very important thing for the party and country.I have at hand minutes of the deliberations on which will build my advise on.I have always advocated for for such initiatives in all poarties. With friends we helped to pull scholars, researchers, founder members, new members, sympathizers, professional political scientists and policy analysts from the CBU,UNZA, to a headsup.
Hon.Kalumba may have been too busy with his court cases and the Katete ward bye-election in in his constituency, but the party functionaries and structures had every idea of it even as the campaigns were going on in Solwezi.Unlike the lies of Mmembe, it was not Aka that convened it but the National treasurer with many sympathisers.In the same vain, none of the people he mentioned were in attendace. As Zambians at home and in the Diaspora we drew up a list of 60 respected citizens to brainstorm the MMD past and present in order to draw the future into picture with strategies.The workshop had a lot to do with strategy and resource mobilization discourse.Its was and remains in the best democratic party and National interest. SG a respected friend of mine should appreciate the initiative.
In no way would we come up with initiatives that are meant to disturbilise the party but only strengthen it.The workshop had wider and higher level clearance.Dr.Kalumba a personal friend of mine should appreciate that MMD is a big institutional in membership and sympathizers.Initiatives to foster the party strength in a multiparty democracy will keep coming from many corners.Its a party of the old and young, founders and new members.

I am reliably informed that there are some real Intelectuals in the wings who have decided to join politics. The likes of Elias Chipimo Jr and John Sangwa. The problem is where they will start from. mmd problems require solutions. ignoring a problem is also a problem on its own. mmd has a pool of resources to assist the party come out of this bad times …. ignoring could give opposition an upper hand and consequesnces could be irreversable
There is one thing the MMD is failing to articulate. RB was flouted as presidential candidate on the basis that, we wanted the MMD to finish the LPM’s term. Change of government at that time would have been grave. That is the sense which right thinking Zambia fell for. it is barely 0ne year RB has erazed the 3 corners of Levy’s pillars remaining with one only..that of being a President.. The MMD would be digging their own grave if they floated RB, because even in by-election he was not suitable then.
