Continued awarding of contracts to Sable annoys Northern PDCC members

The Provincial Development Coordinating Committee (PDCC) in Northern Province has expressed dissatisfaction with the continued awarding of contracts to Sable Construction Company when the company’s performance is allegedly below par.

The PDCC members who included about 13 Members of Parliament among them, the Deputy Speaker Mutale Nalumango wondered why the Road Development Agency (RDA) has continued to award contracts to Sable when the company has failed to perform to the expectations of the people.

The members expressed their displeasure during the combined 3rd and 4th quarter PDCC meeting held last in Kasama last Friday.

They noted that it was surprising that Sable has continued to win contracts in the province when the performance on most of the projects had not been good.

The PDCC members were reacting to a question by Mungwi District Commissioner Funwell Bwembya who wanted to know whether RDA had awarded Sable a contract to construct the long awaited Mbesuma bridge.

And RDA Regional Engineer Chapwe Tumelo said the Agency was equally not happy with the pace at which most road contracts awarded to Sable were progressing.

Mr. Tumelo, however, assured PDCC members that RDA engineers were closely monitoring the projects to ensure that quality is not compromised.

And commenting on the Mbesuma bridge project, Mr. Tumelo said RDA was trying to find a cheaper way of constructing the bridge which will provide a shorter link to Chinsali, Isoka and Nakonde.

He said Sable was one of the companies who had shown interest in the project.

Sable Construction Company has a number of road projects going on in the province among them the Kasama-Luwingu, Luwingu-Nsombo-Chaba and Lunte-Zachariah Chanda roads.

  1. Could the Road Development Agency (RDA) avail the general public of the names of the shareholders and director of Sable Construction Company.
We would like to know this information so that we make an independent judgment as to the transparency of the awarding of these road contracts.

  2. Sable contractors by Aloo seems to be a screen company for some govt top shots as they have done some good works but most of the other works, they lack expertise yet they get the contracts to the tune of billions of kwacha.
