The identity of the Zambia’s opposition political party leader Hakainde Hichilema has been questioned.
A civil society leader today told QFM that the United Party for National Development UPND president Hakainde Hichilema is not his real name.
QFM news has been told that Hichilema was known as Sunny Hichilema until later in his life and that he acquired his middle name Hakainde well into his adulthood.
It has also been disclosed that Hichilema’s father is Chitombwa and that Hichilema comes from his maternal grandfather in whose household he grew up.

People are still giving children names as they wish as surnames. One friend of mine, he only changed his surname to his fathers in the final year at UNZA. The Committee of Citizens has challenged the PF/UPND pact to tell the nation who its candidate will be in the 2011 tripartite elections.Executive Director Gregory Chifire tells Q fm in an interview that Zambians are anxious to know the who will lead the PF/UPND pact into the 2011 elections.Mr. Chifire says both the PF and the UPND should explain to Zambians the way forward on pact’s presidential candidate since time is running out.

The identity scheme is not new in presidential politics – it was tried on Obama when some people claimed that he was a moslem and even on Mandela when some said he originated from the Khoi-Saans of the Kalahari desert.
The best HH can do is to ignore this Cifire and stay focused on his leadership role. By now, he must have noticed the kind of malicious talk that surrounds an aspiring presidential candidate. It may be easy to win an internal election within UPND but it will definately be harder to seal victory as a pact on a national level, much less to run a government with such polarisation.

HH had the right to delete or uphold any of his childhood names it does not matter. I too deleted my childhood name after noticing there was conflict between mum and dad on which side I must have been named from. Mum complained that dad had dominated the naming process in a family of 10 children, so I opted for my mother-side name and this happened when I was already 15 years old. My children are free to delete any of the names they do not prefer and I will not object to it as long as the law so permits.
