Italian Dario Bonetti appointed Zambia coach

Dario Bonetti

Zambia have named former Juventus defender Dario Bonetti as coach to steer their bid to reach the next African Nations Cup finals for the 11th time in their last 12 attempts.

The Italian has signed a two-year deal and will take charge of the team for the first time in September when they start their qualifiers for the 2012 finals, Football Association of Zambia president Kalusha Bwalya told Reuters on Wednesday.

“We had a lot of applicants for the job but we think we have found the right guy. We want experience from the top level but also a youthful hunger,” he said.

The 48-year-old Bonetti, who also played for Roma and AC Milan and won two caps, has limited credentials having worked with brother Ivano at Dundee and coached several lower league Italian sides plus Dinamo,t Bucharest for three months last year.

Bonetti replaces Frenchman Herve Renard, who left the Zambia job to take over as Angola coach in April.

Zambia begin their Nations Cup campaign at home to the Comoros Islands in September and also face Mozambique and Libya in qualifying Group Three.

  1. He will bring the italian mindset of safety first boring football with no adventure at all

  2. Inexperienced coach agai? Wow! it’s clear these guys in FAZ don’t give a damn about Zambian football. I hope this guy is not connected to Kalusha’s wife. Such irresponsibilty is so annoying. Can’t we afford a real time and experience tested coach?

  3. LET US NOT NICK THIS GUY IN A BAD WAY. WE SHOULD GIVE HIM A CHANCE. SINCE WE HAVE A LIMITED BUDGET HE IS NOT SO BAD. I THINK THAT WITH THE TALENT AND SKILLS WE HAVE IN OUR BOYS IT WILL SERVE HIM MORE GOOD THAN HARM WITH HIS CV. HIS CV IS NOT SO EXPLOSIVE INTERNATIONALLY BUT IN THE MODERN WORLD MONEY COUNTS AND WE JUST CANT NICK IT. LETS SUPPORT OUR BOYS WHEN THE QUALIFICATION STARTS. ZAMBIA HERE WE GO COME DRY SEASON AND COME RAIN WE ARE CHIPOLOPOLO BOYS- ARSENAL – PICCADLLY LINE-LONDON-UK

  4. This coach has been appointed by State House through Rupiahs sons, Andrew ( based in Italy ) and Nenani (based in South Africa), in other countries this is a big scandal but in Zambia its a normal proceedure…. kaya mwandini!!.

  5. #6. You sound like a UNIP chap ! Think man. Pa Zed Fimo Fine. Hire European coach + same players + lose matches = fIre coach. What a joke !

  6. This is really useless. I wish we just tried a local coach. Ubupuba nakabili wasting money on unknown coach. Ati foleni coach! Kalusha and the group are too corrupt. That is why kalusha can not live in zambia- ukui temwa.

  7. THIS IS WHY ZAMBIA NEVER DEVELOPS. I THOUGHT DANN’Y KAYA’S SONG NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY COVER WAS SANG FOR YOUTHS ONLY BUT IT SEEMS ITS FOR EVERYONE IN ZAMBIA. WHY WOULD YOU JUDGE THIS GUY BY HIS HISTORY, WHY NOT THINK ABOUT THE GOOD THINGS THIS GUY CAN BRING TO ZAMBIA. HE IS WEALTH FOR THE JOB THATS WHY HE WAS HIRED. THEY SAY “DIE TRYIN OR NEVER AT ALL” SO GIVE HIM A CHANCE TO DO HIS WORK AND JUDGE HIS RESULTS AFTER MAYBE HIS IS THE PERSON GOD HAS SENT FOR ZAMIBA. IDOITS.

  8. After 2 years he will sign up with another African country, by then his resume would have improved by adding on Zambia.

  9. ubu sushi bweka bweka indeed..#11 how many of these inexperienced coaches are we going to give a chance? we’ve seen it happen over and over again..this story has 2 possible endings : 1 – he’ll get fired for not qualifying for the CAF quarter finals 2 – he’ll leave for a better job if zambia qulify for the CAF quarter fnals

  10. i agree with ur damn point # 17 but who hire’s those inexperienced coaches? why not an experienced coach because we all saw the # of coaches that applied to coach zambia and some of the where very experienced from what ba LT said. and i think when a coach fails to make the team qualify to the caf they deserve another chance look at fegurson from machester. how many times has he failed to make man-u to win the FA or EPL or UEFA and how many times did they warn to fire him for failing to win the league or FA or UEFA? the longer the coach stays with the team, the more he finds it easy to know the mistakes the team are making. so if this guy stay very long, he will grow with the team and learn their mistakes and as well as know whats missing from the team to resolve those mistakes.

  11. # 17: on the other hand, i don’t coaches that go looking for other high leveled teams in africa they want to, in this case we are talking about renard because he is the only coach that so. This had differences with the FAZ wgich made him leave the team. As far as i know renard once said “i would have loved to continue with the team but it sems we can’t settle our difference with FAZ” of which to me thats good reason to leave the team. Our zambia has in matured leaders, we need to change some people and put new and young guys that care about football in zambia not just money. i hear people are say this guy is here coz kalu. whatever the case kalu know what zambia need and its great honour that kalu is doing everything to help. some people like him have they own clubs and don’t bother…

  12. #11. The idoit is u. How many times r u goung to engange foring coaches and get the same results. The mony being spent on this bum should go to youth development programs. With a sound youth program we will nature good players. Actuall uli chipuba sana .

  13. #11. The idoit is u. How many times r u going to engange foriegn coaches and get the same results. The money being spent on this bum should go to youth development programs. With a sound youth program we will nature good players. Actually uli c.h.i.p.u.b.a sana .to continue supporting the same nonsense when the best results where achieved by a Zambian Zoom with the national team.

  14. number 23 ,
You are very id!otic together with kalusha bwalya.what hope is there in picking
someone from the street as coach?these guys are just after syphoning money!
kalusha bwalya loves money too much, his friends George weah,Abedi Pele and
the likes surported their national temas financialy when they were playing but
kalusha zero not even salaula pants or bambas..

  15. We may express all sorts of anger towards the new coach’s appointment and come up with all sorts of opinions etc. The fact is Zambia is a nonentity in terms of soccer. We have poor infrastructure, poor local league and therefore can not expect high calibre coaches. Local coaches have been tried and have lamentably failed. We have infact done better under an foreign coach than local, 1974 and 1994 Africa Cup Finals are the examples.

  16. I for one have little hope for improvement. Its like you simply change the shop-keeper but same products.Indescipline among players alsi contributes to failure.Lets find a way to instill sense in these chaps.Already some of the players are intangled in a bunch of uncountable scandles and yet they are not even that famous.

  17. I dont see Zambia going to 2012 AFCON finals. Libya and Mozambique are gonna whip Zed’s a.s.s. FAZ should have as well engaged a Zambian coach instead of hiring a coach who wants to improve his CV.

  18. Ninaitambapo iyi yaso, to start with the qualifiers are starting in September and we haven’t even got friendlies lined up as of today, our players are busy drinking there heads off ( Kalaba in Ndola), FAZ is runed by Kalu and RB, Pa zed nikaya che!!!!!!!!!!

  19. ba Kalusha at it again, single sourcing like RB and his ministers. Remember, the POST ran a story that this guy thru state house involvement has been given the top job. As usual State house and FAZ refutted he story, now it’s out in the open , the POST was right. Will Zambia qualify to the 2014 world cup. I doubt it. Will Zambia win the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012 or 2014? I doubt it, no way.

  20. Interesting. I agree with the point #11 makes about investing the money on youth programs. I have always wondered, how many of the companies that sponsor coaches’ salaries would agree to send Zambian coaches for further training out of the country at a cost similar to or equal to the amounts being paid to foreign coaches?… Youth soccer is kind of skewed at the moment because corruption rules and reigns when it comes to picking players that represent the national teams. I guess this is the price we pay for not having an active youth league structure. At the moment selectors get away with a lot of nonsense because we don’t always know what level these kids are at.Mr Bonnetti however, is a big gamble! It would have been easier to accept him if there were no strings attached to Plot 1!

  21. # 27 Remy are you an interested party, coz yo english doesn,t sount Zambia or English English.

  22. when i say that Rupia is very hopeless people blame me, im sure now u see that this JOKE of a president has nothing for this country apart from traveling and CORRUPTION ! rupia is such a hopeless and worthless old useless man.

  23. and when zambia plays good soccer and surprises a few more people again like we went through with HR…then what will most of you guys going to say at that time..??

  24. kalu and cronies dont give a damn about zed soccer. any deal undertaken. has to benefit them first. the rest is secondary.after they are done there is nothing for anyone including the very sport they milk together they are administators, scouts, coaches, referees, players and politicians. despite our abundant talent, this coach will not take us beyond the ‘so near yet so far’ scenarior we have always been stuck in because he has no credentials. like all the other bogus coaches we’ve hired since ziese it will appear as though he has tried really good but was just unlucky. then he will use this expposure and experience and apply for a job with ghana, angola or nigeria and off he goes living us feeling really s.tu.pid.

  25. Winning the COSAFA, qualifying to the so called AFCON and even coming out second best, will not be an achievement any more for Zambia. So if FAZ or RB have any planz for this football-lovin nation, their thinking should start beyond those three.

  26. #6 Baphicala- What chance? Why not give a chance to a Zambian? We had my uncle Samuel Zoom Ndhlovu when we beat Italy 4-0. With him we won the East and Central Africa Cup. With Bamfuchile it was not a question of winning the COSAFA Cup but by how many goals. What the Nation needs is to summon all old adminstrators to discuss what has gone wrong and the way forward.

  27. As long as Kalusha is at FAZ there will always be problems with runing of football in Zambia he is too self centred the basthard how do you some one with no proper Cv for a national team?

  28. Well can someone go through this CV and employ this so-called coach without a backbone? What is wrong with this Kalusha Bwalya? Kabole can even do far much better than him, but look at the monies we’re talking about here. Abash Kalu.

  29. jj, #11, #19 and #20, why are you calling others *****s, there is no need for such language. By the way, if you are in Canada I hope you use French to communicate, if it is English then I do not know how you manage.

  30. Why hire a coach in a hurry. Those guys at FAZ should have done serious consultation with their counterparts from Ghana. Let’s learn from Ghana right now.

  31. this coach has been chosen solely for one reason – HE IS ITALIAN!..and just because he is italian, ba kalu thinks zambians we’ll sing him praises for choosing an italian coach..this is a new generation that are well educated you fools! we analyse

  32. Kalu’s backdoor methods of hiring coaches is really destroying Zambian football! How i wish Hanif Adams had gotten the FAZ presidency! Everthing Kalu does is now a circus! Can’t we learn from the Renard mistake? Abash Kalu! Bonetti my FOOT!!!!

  33. For our national team to make progress we need a total shake up at the FAZ, get rid of Kalusha and his puppets and bring in people who have the love of the team at heart. I also believe it is about time to give chance to a local coach and forget about these foreign tourists.

  34. Zambia a training field. After some experience, He will go to South.

Why not employ local people please? Our couch from Italy, Our president from Zimbabwe. Local is laka.

  35. Give the man a chance and measure him on his results. What we should be screaming about is the “exit clause” on his contract. If he does not perform, how do we separate? Granted we would like Chipolopolo to be coached by a Zambian, but who cares if a non – zambian performs?
Looks like it is a thin line between being patriotic and exhibiting “xenorphobic” tendencies.

  36. What is the target for this same man? We what to see the terms of his contarct not just the great Galu saying we have the right man. Let Galu swallow his pride and engage a local coach. Wedson and patrick can do great if supported!!!
